Really tough to communicate how amazing games 4 and 5 were. The country, everything going, the feelings at the time…it was amazing. Just a great series start to finish

2:13 - 2:25 SORIANO and Spencer with two huge defensive plays in game 3 4:17 Buck Showalter doing analyst work. Thats gotta be a surprise, since he was the manager that took Arizona and Yankees to success but fired just before both won it all 6:11 - 6:25 Spencer with a great throw in game 4 and another great tag by Posada in this 2001 postseason 7:07 Posada should have been bunting in game 4 in that situation, and then call Mariano for another 2 innings save 13:54 Another great defensive play by Soriano in game 5 Posada, Soriano, and Spencer were playing gold-glove baseball these 3 middle games

These three games were perhaps the biggest pick-me-up ever for Yankees fans and the City of New York.

This series could have easily been over in five if it weren't for three insanely clutch Home Runs by Tino Martinez, Derek Jeter, and Scott Brosius off Byung Hyun-Kim and the Walk Off by Alfonso Soriano. The Yankees go from 0-2, to needing just one in Arizona for the four-peet. After suffering two devastating losses, will it be too tough for the Diamondbacks to come back from or will the eccentric energy by their home fans at Bank One Ballpark help carry them to a Championship.

If the Yankees were able to hold on for the 2-1 win in game 7 they would've done something less likely than Mariano Rivera blowing a save in the playoffs. New York would've won the series 4-3 while being outscored over the 7 games by a combined total of 35-14. That negative 21 run differential would've been the second worst for any team that actually won the World Series. The 1960 Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the New York Yankees in 7 games with arguably the most famous home run of all time. Bill Mazeroski's walk off dinger won the game 10-9 and the Series 4-3. HOWEVER, the Pirates were outscored over the 7 games by 28 runs. (55-27) Pittsburgh won their games by 2, 1, 3, and 1 run respectively. New York, on the other hand, won by 10, 12, and 13 runs. Forty-one years later it was the Yankees turn to try and win a World Series while being dominated at the same time. Going into game 7 New York had 3 wins all by 1 run a piece. Arizona had won their games by 8, 4, and 13 runs. Alas, it was not meant to be as the Diamondbacks pulled off the impossible by scoring twice off of the greatest closer in history to finish the comeback victory in game 7 of a World Series that they outscored their opponent by 23 runs.

Watch game 7. The Yankees made so many mistakes. They should have had minimum two more runs.

On October 30, the World Series would be in NYC. The Diamondbacks paid a visit to Ground Zero the day before the game and paid homage to all of NYC's finest. After the fans went through heavy security checkpoints to get into the stadium, they saw something not seen since 1956: a guest from the White House throw out the first pitch. President George W. Bush took the mound, stuck his thumb up in the air as a symbol of "we're not afraid of terrorists or anything else", then fired a perfect strike. After President Bush threw out the first ball, it was Roger Clemens' job to get the Yankees back in the series. Through seven innings, Clemens allowed only one run. But Arizona's starter, Brian Anderson (despite a 4-9 record and a 5.24 ERA) nearly matched him pitch-for-pitch. Jorge Posada homered in the 2th. Then in the 6th, the Yankees got a run to go ahead. Mariano Rivera pitched two shutout innings to preserve the 2-1 win and get the Yankees back in the series. Game 4 occurred on Halloween night. Curt Schilling toed the rubber on three days' rest for AZ while the Yankees countered with El Duque, he of a 4-7 record on the year and three months on the Disabled List. But his 9-2 playoff record led to Torre's trust in Orlando Hernandez. El Duque allowed just one run in 6 1/3 innings. Schilling, meanwhile, allowed just a Shane Spencer home run in the second as he allowed only three hits in 7 innings on 88 pitches. Then, in the 8th, the D'backs scored twice to take the lead. Then, Bob Brenly pulled Schilling for Byung-Hyun Kim. Kim fanned the side in the 8th. Then, in the 9th, Kim allowed a one out single. One strikeout later, the D'backs were an out away from going up 3-1 in games. But Tino Martinez swung at Kim's first pitch and hit it over the wall for a game-tying home run. After Rivera pitched a perfect 1-2-3 top of the 10th, eyebrows were raised when Kim returned to the mound in the bottom half. He got two quick outs, then Jeter stepped up. The clocked turned Midnight, and thus, baseball was played in November for the first time. On a 3-and-2 pitch, Jeter went opposite field for a game winning home run and a 4-3 Yankees' win to tie the series at 2 apiece, and earn a new nickname: "Mr. November." The Game 5 pitching matchup favored the Yankees with Mike Mussina on the mound. But during the game, a pattern was taking place: the Yanks simply struggled to score regardless of who started. And Arizona got a pair of 5th inning blasts from Steve Finley and reserve catcher Rod Barajas for a 2-0 lead. Miguel Batista, 11-8 on the year, pitched the game of his life, going 7 2/3 innings and allowing only 5 hits and no runs. It was still 2-0 D'backs going into the 9th. But then Bob Brenly gave rise to second guessing. He brought back Byung-Hyun Kim for the 9th. WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!! A double and two outs later, Kim was an out away from getting redemption. But Scott Brosius, who faced Kim twice the night before, sat on a slider.......and he hit it out. WTF??!!!! The Yankees did it..AGAIN!! Nobody believed what they saw. Unbelievable. The game went to extra innings. Mariano pitched two more scoreless frames. Then, in the 12th, a single and a bunt moved a runner to second. Alfonso Soriano singled to right, and Knoblauch scored for a 3-2 Yankees' win and lead the series 3 games to two. At this point, you have to wonder if the Yankees have some mythical powers and that they will always win regardless of whether they're outplayed or not. After all, they're hitting .177 as a team and scored just 10 runs over 5 games, and yet are STILL a win away from winning it all again. It's on to Phoenix.

Bush with probably the most famous first pitch in baseball history in game 3 thats the thing that made the Yankee dynasty = Great starting pitching, the best closer in baseball history, and clutch homeruns You have to remember, in September, Kim was giving up alot of home runs. So its no surprise that he gave up that many in the WS. And Craig Counsell has just been everywhere this postseason, both offensively and defensively Miguel Batista once again sensational for Arizona in this postseason, in his game 5 start at Yankee Stadium. He was sensational this 2001 postseason in the 3 games he started. And Brian Anderson pitched pretty well for Arizona in game 3.

Back to Back walkoff wins for the Yanks in Games 4 and 5. Arizona has to feel atleast a little deflated could of won it in New York or go back to Arizona up 3-2 only needing to win game 6. Now they have to win both 6 and 7 seems like a tall task against the Bronx Bombers.

@@Surfer041I'm a huge Yankee fan and they could have been swept. They were always so clutch during this eta . After Soriano hit the hame run in game 7 I thought that's 4 in a row now. I think they made 2 errors in the bottom of the 9th. Riveras throwing error was a huge cuz I think it could have been a double play. That was the end of there Dynasty. Well maybe 03 cuz they were up 2-1 and blew game 4 and game 5 wells back went out and Contreras pitched horrible. Game 6 Beckett shut us out. Then 04 was the only way the red sox would break the curse. Something crazy had 2 happen and I still can't believe they blew games 4 and 5 and had chances in game 6 but they didn't have a capable SP on game 7 . First and only 3-0 comeback in baseball and Boston deserved it. This year they really suck. Have no pitching and are old. They need 2 get younger, faster, and more SP other then Cole.Buillpen is the only strong suit.
