2001 Nissan XTerra Misfire problem and the dreaded 300 fault code 

I know this is out of my normal subject content, but I thought this would help someone.

Mr. Donnie, any vehicle built after the early 80s is way over engineered. I hope you get the thing rolling good.👍🙏Your Mrs and family is blessed to have a handy gentleman such as yourself.

My husband was a diesel mechanic for nearly 30years. We grew up and lived most our life just north of you in the coalfields along the VA/KY stateline. He run a wrecker hauling coaltrucks and Haliburton gas trucks back to the shop. You could always tell when he had been working on a regular vehicle, his knuckles would look like he had been in a fight.

We've owned an Auto Repair and Tire Service for 42 years. One thing I've learned is preventative maintenance. If you have fuel injection, add cleaner to your fuel tank every time you change the oil. Change the oil and filter per your owner manual. Check the oil and transmission levels periodically depending on the age of your vehicle. And ladies, this isn't hard to do, and you should also get someone to teach you how to change a flat tire. I've started to change mine many times, but a nice gentleman always stops to help when you ask the Lord to send you one 😊.

My late husband and I had a XTerra 2001. It finally gave up this year with over 280,000 miles on her. She was a great vehicle. Made countless trips across the mountain from NC to Tennessee 5 to 8 times a year, countless school trips hauled kids to and from school and work,countless other trips but due to my being disabled I couldn't work on her anymore. Hated saying goodbye to an old friend. See you on the next one.

Thanks for sharing, Donnie. Your video is actually good information for lots of people who drive older vehicles. Many car builders were putting the ignition modules inside the distributors back in those days, and they were all a problem after 20 years. When they started using coil packs instead of distributors, the problem went there. The fancy new code readers ($$$) can tell you which coil pack is bad.

This is why I love the older vehicles you can raise the hood and say damn there's my motor. I do own a 2001 S 10 only because I haven't been able to find any good Chevy truck truck bodies. I've got everything to build the the drivetrain but finding a 67-72 body is what's the hold up. Good tips. Scotty Kilmer has a good channel and helpful tips.

When you buy a new cap and rotor make sure they are both from the same company. Otherwise they might hit each other and break. Also, they make a set of ratchet extensions that have a little wobble in each joint. Use a couple of the short ones, they won't flop over and bind up like the universal joints will. Tips you learn from years of experience. Y'all are welcome, cause you're going to say thanks after you use the tips.

These computerised engines can reallly give you a hard time diagnosing their problems. But, are much better. Back in the the 60's and 70's you'd never get 270,xxx .miles without doing a motor swap. I had an early 80s model Chevy with over 300,000 miles but I had to replace the engine with a new one. Good video Donnie.

This is something different than the usual. That looks like it's in nice shape for the year. Most of them have rotted away up here. This is what I do for a living and I work on all kinds of vehicles. One of them yesterday was a '69, 396 Chevelle. Misfires can be a pain, but higher level scanners will let you look at individual cylinders in a graph. Multiple misfires usually indicate ignition or fuel pressure issues. Or the customer overheated the hell out of it.

That sure was a different looking distrubutor Donnie...but looks like your code 300 is gone and you are ready to run ....i had to do my coil packs on my Mercury Grand Marquis a few months back ...it was the first time i did a coil pack system , it wasnt too bad a job...though i upgraded them with msd units...runs sweet now....but...it still is much easier to tinker on my old 62 Finger mashin Ford Galaxie.... Weren't these on the recall list, my dad was a awesome mechanic was a few of his many talents it amazed me that he could do so much with his massive size hands he wore a size 13 wedding ring. I don't have a clue about mechanical issues but I know when a vehicle is not firing right thanks to dad and I miss him everyday 24/7 he wasn't a fan of Ford because of the engine space no room for his giant hand's to work on, being a kid of a guy such as his I rode in Detroit's best or worse according to the critics being his kid we got to ride in some of the vehicles that he fixed for others and wouldn't change it for nothing.

Definitely going to try this. I just replaced my distributor a few weeks ago now I got PO300, I’ve changed plugs, wires already…. I did notice the little dot in the shaft didn’t quite line up but I was told not to worry about that

We got a 2002 MDX and love it. It may need repairs once in a while, but I feel safer in it than some of the new cars.

good video and job on the old chevy you can replace that part just make sure you put the jell under it. i have replaced a few they use to not cost much. take care, be safe and well.

Ha ha ha, I had the same issue about two years ago and I went down the rabbit hole trying to chase down the problem and don't get me wrong. I ended up finding issues that needed fixin but the distributor was my main issue like you showed in this video. My Xterra is a 2000! Also, I forgot to mention that the inner bushing for my distributor wore out causing the CAM signals to be affected and therefore causing the issues when it got hot.

I ran into this on an older Ford truck, except it was a hard stall after warmup whenever I stopped. It was a cracked ignition module. $15 and a pain in the rear was gone.

I currently run my own shop part time because i also work my fulltime job too. I have made this same repair. But i need to know your trick on the lack of band aids. I can just raise the hood on anything and i see blood and have no idea where it came from lol. My son and daughter tell me I can get a nick and start bleeding just putting gas in something. Nissan make some fine vehicles. Bunch of co-workers had them & they was very dependable. I never own 1 yet.

Why on earth doesn't socket manufacturers put magnets inside of them? I know it would increase the cost, but most of us who work with tools would gladly pay a few dollars more for tools that will both hold onto the nuts as you put them on or as you take them out. I've dropped screws going both ways at a job like this. Digging out dropped bolts and screws sucks.

I used to time the old Ford motors take number 1 plug out stick a screwdriver in the cylinder easy like a turn the motor by hand till the piston came to the top and move the rotor button to point to the cylinder.

I replace the sparks plugs rotor and cap after that gave me a p0300 it was the catalyst 2002 Nissan quest after that a code p3002 came all the spark plugs were loose I tight them no more code

I have a 2004 xtrerra silver just like yours

1999 Nissan pathfinder with 96,xxx original miles, always maintained. p0300 code and rough idle and hard to start. new parts replaced: plugs,(denso), wires (denso), completely brand new distributor (cap rotor, shaft coil etc), new manifold gaskets, cant find problem after thousands $$. Please help! someone suggested the crank position sensor could cause the problem...any advice? thanks!

Wouldn’t no problem to figure out a old 300 6 cylinder or 302. I can take a older ford motor apart and put it back together in the dark. GOD BLESS you sir Amen 🙏

I just changed my distributor on a 1990 F150 6cyl yesterday, mine would completely shut down the ignition. I had to turn the key off and back on while driving (manual trans) to get the computer to reset. No codes for this problem. It was very frustrating to decide where to look. Thank the Lord for RU-vid University.

Those kind of problems can be a pain to isolate and repair.
