2001 Toyota Corolla LE
1.8L Dohc 4 Cyl which 125 HP. It's paired to a 5 speed manual
Probably the last Corolla where the interior wasn't a complete clip-on puzzle where things are easily detachable. But it was in this generation that quality somewhat began to slide

Same here! I got a 00 with 98,000 for 500 with great interior, no accidents, from original owner! Power everything, mt, new tires/exhaust/plugs, and it's my first Toyota. Weird thing is no tachometer though. Clear coat is gone but, primer will be fine.

Fuckin right Toyota's are number one my favorite is the corolla nice tint and a set of rims is all it takes to have a really nice reliable car or you could buy a Chevy cruise that will have you cruising right into the mechanic shop a few times a year

well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally have owned and/or driven several toyotas, and I have yet to find a toyota that is unreliable. I don't have much experience with the newer models, but every toyota I've been in has always had a great quality interior, and they have all been very reliable. The interiors weren't too fancy, but they were durable. they're very good cars in my opinion.

@Intechdude300 And these engines used timing chains too, while the civic used belts. The chains in these corollas are truly lifetime, and my buddy had only a quart of oil in his engine when he bought it at 350K miles too. They take abuse well for sure!

i have the 2000 4spd-auto, i can agree the interior tends to fail. the door lining as you mentioned tends to warp over time in the sun. i have actually ripped all that trim out of the driver's side front and it's fine because it's painted white beneath. also had to remove the weather stripping in the driver side front because it had warped. i actually replaced it with a memory-foamish weather stripping from home depot, not the prettiest but works great lol. I also had to replace the window regulator for the front driver, since it was becoming slow and requiring 3 attempts over 10 minutes to get it to fully close due to high friction---the factory grease tends to turn to sludge or disappear besides some corrosion. i cleaned the original and it might have worked ok for another 5 yrs but i bought a new one anyway. passenger front window will need the same thing soon. i've replaced all inside door handles. replaced 1 outside door handle because i broke it off one morning when it was cold and door iced shut. replaced both cup holders. i cleaned out the driver window/door electric control unit with WD40, because the buttons were sticking from whatever crap got in there over time. i've replaced dome light and dash lights. the headliner ceiling fabric is falling down everywhere and the door panel fabrics are coming loose so i'll need to glue something else up there soon. it tends to disintegrate in your fingers like you said. that's about it for interior. besides interior, i've performed routine maintenance under the hood, which i'm usually good about. but, a spark plug coil slowly became loose over time which i didn't realize for about 5k miles. it started causing cyl-3 misfires, but my check engine light has been on since 2007 so i didn't notice. eventually it became extremely obvious and i fixed it. my motor may have been damaged a bit because now it sounds a little more raspy than it did prior. regardless, 160k and going strong. it is pretty ugly, though... i used to drive an 01' focus 10yrs ago and i must say it was pretty damn fun to drive until i wrecked it :(

I use to have this car back in 2001 and it was a great car never gave me problems until the day i sold it in 2006 except for the trim pice on the doors. I totally forgot the map lights were on the rear view mirror. Bought a 2007 Scion tC it was a nicer car but definitely didn’t hold up as well af my corolla did after 5 years. My Aunt still has a 2002 corolla S and its still in great condition and runs great, though she doesn’t really drive it that much.

Great cars easy and cheap to fix. Look for rust ( body and brake lines before buying). These engines can be oil burners. Look for p420 code ( expensive to repair) Not fast or nice but will out last any car from same year.

@Intechdude300 Agreed, the 93-97 was a better car, but the 98-01 Corolla is still a better car than the 96-00 civic in terms of durability in my personal experience. But for economy car driving enjoyment and handling prowess, the Civic and Protege take the Corolla to the cleaners :P At any rate, this car is MUCH too tiny for me to feel secure traveling on a freeway at 80+ MPH with raised pickups driving next to me and 18 wheelers trying to run me off the road haha!

@talldude123 It's a little weird how they add dual vvti to the new one and nothing really happens. I have a Tacoma 4.0. The materials are full of plastics but not the kind of plastics found in the Corolla, Venza, Sienna, Rav4, ETC. No problems with the engine, it's so refined compared to Nissan's V6. SHIeet, I hope they don't ruin the 2014 Tacoma .Funny how most of Toyota's cars/vehicles are perfectly fine, then they're ruined by a redesign.

@Intechdude300 It depends. The corolla has a MUCH more reliable automatic transmission over the 96-2000 Civic that has excellent shift quality by comparison. The Corolla also doesn't have problems with power lock actuators going out regularly, among other minor hardware issues. I'm a Honda guy, but I will admit that this gen Corolla is a tank. I personally know someone with a 98 Corolla with over 400K miles. Yes, you read that right, over 400K! Smooth as hell, original engine and tranny.
