When the regular season ended, two teams won 100 games in the AL: the powerhouse Yankees and the Moneyball Athletics. As it turned out, neither one playing in the ALCS. Thus, the Cinderella ALCS between the upstart Angels and the Minnesota Twins (Rally Monkey vs. Homer Hankies). Which slipper will fit the best? Well, in Game 1, the Angels' offense, which hit .378 against the Yankees, were done in by Joe Mays and two relievers at the Metrodome. The Twins held Anaheim to four hits and one run in a 2-1 Minnesota victory. Three more wins, and the Twins will go from the MLB obituaries to the World Series. But Darin Erstad's 1st inning blast got the Halos back on track in Game 2. Brad Fullmer also went yard as Ramon Ortiz and three relievers combined to win the game for the Angels, 6-3, and head to Orange County tied at 1 apiece. In Anaheim for Game 3, Jarrod Washburn went opposite Eric Milton (the latter 5-2 lifetime against Anaheim, and pitched a no-hitter against them in 1999). Both allowed just one run in their outings. Tied at 1 in the 8th, Troy Glaus circled the bases via the long ball. Troy Percival and two defensive gems in the 9th sealed the 2-1 win and a 2-1 lead in games for the Rally Monkeys. John Lackey and Brad Radke both pitched shutout ball through 6 innings of Game 4. Come the bottom half of the 7th, the Angels broke through for 2 runs, then broke it open with 5 in the 8th to win, 7-1, and now Anaheim needed only one win for the AL flag. Anaheim led 3-2 of Game 5 after 6 innings. But when the Twins scored three in the top of the 7th, the fans had to wonder if the franchise was going to let the pennant slip away again. After all, they blew a 3-1 lead in the 1986 ALCS, blew a 2-0 lead in '82. And if the Angels lost, the Homer Hankies would be ready in Minnesota. But with two on in the bottom half, up stepped Adam Kennedy, who had already homered twice in the game. After failing to bunt the runners over, he swung at one off Johan Santana, into the seats in right for a three-run blast and a 6-5 Angels lead. That hat trick will earn Kennedy ALCS MVP honors. And just to make sure, Anaheim would add 7 more runs in the 7th for a 10-run inning (tying a playoff record for any team) and a 13-5 Anaheim win. Bud Selig couldn't stop the Twins. Neither would the AL Central competition. Not the Oakland A's. Leave it to the Rally Monkey and an Halos' team that could and did. Edison International Field became Fantasyland as the Angels were going to their first World Series in the teams' 41 year history. All they need now is an opponent.
- Even though this ALCS was only 5 games, the games were close. Even most of the regular season games between Twins-Angels were close as well. - Angels become the first AL Wild Card team ever to reach the World Series. - As for the Twins, they will soon release David Ortiz. And Boston will then sign him. Twins GM thought that they could do better at DH. And Ortiz also had knee surgery at the beginning of the 2002 season, so there were some concerns. -Johan Santana sure struggled for the Twins this series. - ohhh, so rookie Chone Figgings was on the Angels 2002 postseason roster. And of course the other Angels rookies contributing in a big way = KROD and Lackey
