When I was 7 years old on October 17, 1989, the Bay Area was ready to see Game 3 of the World Series in San Francisco when the 6.8 earthquake hit at 5:04pm. As word began to filter in on how bad the damage was, MLB postponed Game 3 until the Bay Area could cope and recover. It took 10 days before Game 3 was played. It would take more than 10 YEARS for the next Game 3 to return to San Francisco. Over 40,000+ jammed Pac Bell Park to see if Bonds could hit McCovey Cove and the Giants taking the lead in the series. After all, the Angels' starter, Ramon Ortiz, allowed an ML leading 40 home runs in 2002 while the Giants countered with Livan Hernandez, 6-0 in his playoff career. The Giants scored a run in the first to jump in front. But in both the third and fourth innings, the Angels batted around both times and scored four runs in each frame. The key was Scott Spiezio's two run triple in the third. Bonds DID, though, hit a two-run shot in the fifth for his third home run of the series and 7th of the postseason. But it was far from enough, as the Halos regained home-field advantage with a 10-4 win. Come Game 4, the Angels against jumped early. Troy Glaus' two-run shot in the 3rd put Anaheim up 3-0. John Lackey kept the Giants' bat cold through four innings. Come the 5th, a pair of 20-foot infield hits by Kirk Rueter and Lofton got the Giants going. A single, a sacrifice fly, an intentional walk and another single later, the game was tied at 3. It stayed that way until the 8th, when JT Snow singled off K-Rod, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on David Bell's single to put SF ahead 4-3. Three outs from Robb Nen later, the series became a best-of-three. The Giants' bats took a page out of the Angels' playbook as they jumped on Washburn for six runs in the first three innings. Anaheim did close to within 6-4, but in the bottom of the 6th, Jeff Kent hit a two-run blast to put the game away. The Giants would add eight more runs to blow away the Angels, 16-4. Kent would hit two home runs while Aurilia added a three-run shot. With their 12 home runs in 5 games, the Giants tied the record for most HRs by one team in a World Series. More importantly, SF needed just one more win to capture their first title since they played in the Polo Grounds in 1954. The most talked about play of Game 5 came in the 7th, when Kenny Lofton's triple scored two runs, but there was a little Giants' batboy at the plate: Dusty Baker's three-year old son Darren. Darren was at the plate when JT Snow was about to cross it, and thankfully, Snow grabbed Darren to get him out of the way. Dusty knew he was going to hear it from his wife, mother and many others. "After the game was over, the first call I got was from my mother. It was one of those "I told you so" calls," said Dusty. The Giants' skipper also heard from the league office and they asked him to be very careful about Darren. The near incident led to a minimum age for batboys being implemented for the 2003 season.
J.T. Snow knew how to handle children. "I have a 4 1/2 year old son of my own, so I know how to grab ahold of one every now and then," replied J.T. during the post-game press conference.
If there is a game 7, Sciossia cannot start Ramon Ortiz or John Lackey. THey got hit around If there is a game 7, then Livan will pitch for the Giants. Dusty cannot make Livan the game 7 starter, since the Angels offense loves hitting against sinker ball pitchers, and Livan got hit around in game 3. Wow, Ramon Ortiz struck out Barry Bonds on 3 pitches, in game 3 , WOW That was a blast by Bonds in game 3 Troy Glaus has been sensational. Another home run (game 4)
@@chrisuncleahmad By Ortiz, I meant Ramon Ortiz of the Angels (not Russ Ortiz of the Giants). But I guess either way, for game 7, the Angels have to start either Ramon Ortiz on full rest or rookie John Lackey on 3-days-rest As for the Giants, for game 7, they gotta go with Rueter for game 7 on short rest. But Livan has pitched well in postseason games in his career, so he does have that experience.
