Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium www.scannerdanner.com/join-sc... There is a 14 day free trial.
On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!

Paul, I've been watching your videos for years now. I just wanted to thank you for all that you teach. I have your book and I'm a premium member on your site. You've made me a better diagnostic tech and I continue to learn something after every video you post. The circuit designs don't always apply to me as I only work on Porsche vehicles (for 6 years now). But the diagnostic process you teach helped me immensely. I can now confidently tackle almost any electrical issue I come across. For any younger techs out there, LEARN FROM THIS MAN! We need more electrically competent techs in the field.

It does matter if kids attend school. I also recognize that parents can make decisions to permit absences, but I will not go along with the notion that it does not matter.
@ScannerDanner

I think there is a max of 10 unexcused absences before you'd have to go to court. Stupid rules Years ago I pickup my kid up early from school to go snowboarding and I had to sign a form that required me to put a reason. I wrote "because I want to" on it lol. I said, it's my kid and I'm taking him snowboarding. They were like "that's not excused", I was like "I don't care"

I'm so glad I found this video. Distributor pickup coil fixed all of my problems. Bought a 96 1500 for 2800, and it kept shutting off once warmed up. Your knowledge of the engine phases and the fact that the PCM is not looking at the cam position sensor until in the warmed up phase made me figure it out. Turns out all 3 wires on the distributor pickup coil were exposed from the 90 degree turn the wires make. Didn't even change the crank position sensor, but gave new cap, ignition coil, plugs, and wires, and the issue is gone, as well as the cam/crank error code.

I had a crank sensor fail in a similar manner last year on an old Volvo. You could start it, drive around all day, but once you shut it off it wouldn’t restart unless you waited a while. It’s an OBD1 vehicle and I do not own a scope, so i did not properly diagnose it like you. However, it’s a $14 part an takes about 2-3 minutes to change, and the wiring was very degraded..so I replaced it anyway. No more problems! Very common failure on these cars as well. Great video as usual.

I’m currently working on a 98’ ford windstar with a no start when hot condition. I tried out the proof of concept on disconnecting the Cam Sensor and replicating the issue. But this thing starts without it plugged in! This threw me for a loop when I thought I was close to my diag.

Thanks Dan', I had a 'crank but no start' on my 1989 ford e150 van 4.9 inline 6. it was running and just Quit. It has two simultaneous problems; the coil tested bad; put new coil in still no start. Watched a cupule of your vid's decided it was the engine control module; so I went to Pick$Pull and got a used distributor complete with module for $40. put it in runs great! Thanks Dan', I could not have done it with out you.

Im a heavy equipment field tech but I have taken your principles to my field and applied them. In the last two years I have progressed immensely in electrical and engine electrical troubleshooting. I love a good challenge. I had a dozer with some crazy CAN issues last week. Two techs had spent countless hours on it. By looking at schematic and keeping it simple I was able to diag and repair the issue. It feels really damn good being able to figure out somethi g after multiple people have given up on.

I guess I can't bash the engineers too much - at least it didn't kill the engine the minute it failed ... because you know that would be in the middle of a 4 lane expressway, at rush hour, in the middle of the beltway of some major city. They could have engineered the thing to run WITHOUT the sensor, though ... How frustrating that you pay all that money for Snap-On products, and they give you the same glitches as the cheap stuff. With all the money that company pulls in, you'd think their R&D would be second to NONE. The 21st Century is surely a baffling time ... Always great lessons, Paul! I appreciate you guys freezing your rears off for us - I now know how much of an effort filming is! I have a newfound appreciation for all you guys now. I swear the camera adds double the time, and more to the job, if your teaching the way you do! THANKS, Paul & Caleb! 🍻

In low ambient temperatures I had communication issues with Chrysler and Jeep on a Mt2500 . I bought an MTG2500 and had the same issue with that one also despite swapping cartridges between them. As soon as the temperature warmed, both scanners communicated just fine. Not sure if the operating temperature range of the scanners are more sensitive to to perform diagnostics on some makes of cars than others makes when very cold, but appears so with Chrysler using Snap On.

Hi Paul not relevant to this video but like you I've been frustrated by snap on's scan data cursors however I discovered by accident that if you put your finger on the graph your interested in at the point you want your cursor to go it will move to where your finger is you may have to use your scroll keys to place it exactly where you want it but it's much easier than using the scroll function all the way it also works with a mouse even easier than a finger hope this is of use to you.

I used to skip school and go out riding in my truck. Caleb no worries we won't tell mom. Always good visiting with the good Professor and the great Steven Spielberg no no I mean George Lucas no no I mean Caleb. I see you're wearing your Snap Off jacket. Surely I jest. Had an old 258 jeep and if you grounded the cam sensor it would start up and run but the next time it would not you had to ground the sensor again to get it to start. Now that I'm thinking about it I'm not sure if I had to ground it or disconnect the sensor and reconnect it. Really good lesson guys. Thanks much. Happy Motoring.
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 лет назад
It would have been a pull down circuit too so grounding it would have definitely pulled the signal low and created a voltage change, and so would unplugging it if the sensor was shorted, that would have pulled the signal back high.

2001 Ram 1500 5.9 L 4X4 exact same problems. Additionally ODB2 connector dead, that's the reason I got it 8 years ago with 75,000 miles for $750. But is does make it difficult to troubleshoot. Thanks for video.

It's all tiny surface mount components soldered with brittle low lead solder, and when it gets hot the crack opens, and when it cools it closes. If you can get to the sensor and spray it with freeze spray, it could temporally get it to work. The freezing/heat method is what they use in electronic repair, ie TV,s, and can locate faults on boards.
