MY LITTLE INTERNATIONAL 4300 WITH THE DT466 HAS ALWAYS BEEN A VERY GOOD STARTING, RUNNING AND DRIVING TRUCK....UNTIL A COUPLE WEEKS AGO WHEN THE TEMPS DROPPED BELOW 50*. ONCE IT HIT 40* IT WOULDNT START BUT IF THE TEMP CAME UP JUST TO 50* IT WOULD START LIKE IT ALWAYS DID. ALL THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE POINTED ONE WAY UNTIL.......WELL, YOU WILL SEE! HOPE YOU ENJOY!

I admire your ability to diagnose and remedy tough problems. I hate electrical issues. I have seen you say you like them because they can lead to getting a good deal on an easy-to-fix truck. TRUE!

Before i begin, let me tell you that you are the MVP of the year in my book, just for showing how to shut off that aweful beeping!!!! I never knew this!!! THANK YOU!!!!! Literally just went through this on a friend's 04 international box truck, had to give it a spritz of the ole magic in a can on any cold start, no matter the temperature. I also noticed the RPM's dropping out on my scantool, so out came my DVOM, powers and grounds check, found the entire ECM system to be lower voltage than battery voltage, so i found that fuse, which had the holder replaced with crimp on female spade connectors and they disintegrated upon moving it. An inline fuse holder, some solder, self sealing heat shrink, and tape in a can later, that thing runs SO much better, starts every time, and now get 8mpg over the 5 it was getting!

Thanks for the informative video, I’ve had this issue since I bought my project truck, i just happened to check the fuses like you did they were fine, but the previous owner put the fuse back into the connector wrong I just happened to catch it. If I wouldn’t have paid extra attention to it I would still be looking for the problem. Thanks so much you saved me thousands.

Excellent explanation and fixing of a problem and bringing us along multiple days. I knew there was a fuse in the battery box that would burn out for a no start but didn’t know that fuse was for the ecm.

First step in diagnosis is understanding how it's supposed to work when it works properly. Without understanding that first any diagnosis is a uphill Battle. Iv seen that same issue on freightliners a few times battery box is a prime place for corrosion.

At the dealer, we found lots of problems with that ECM power/ground harness. We got in the habit of hardwiring the three plus connectors that international put throughout the whole length of the harness making it essentially one whole fused harness running directly from the battery box to where it needed to go. I believe there were connectors at the battery box, the flywheel housing, and the engine bay and all were prone to corrosion, poor pin fitment, general damage, and bad crimps leading to all sorts of weird issues.

A good fix that was relatively pain free. This ought to help some folks out.

I have two of these trucks. An 03 and an 05. The power you're getting from the battery to the ECM and the IDM is referred to as clean power. It is power that is distributed pre-fuse box. The connection you found is critical. Also check your ground connections. They run from the battery, to the starter and from the starter ground lug to the engine block and the frame. Corrosion will corrupt the continuity and give you the same type issue that corrode fuse connection did. A steel brush clean up goes far on those connections.

Thanks for this very educational video. Tomorrow I will check my ECM power supply connections. My truck can’t stay running. It starts but I feel the ECM keeps losing power then resets turning the engine off. Even the fuel lift pump registers 2.4v. I will check that harness nest😂
