THIS IS A MAXXFORCE DT466. IT WILL START FINE EVERY MORNING BUT ONCE IT WARMS UP, IT WONT RESTART. I SHOW HOW I RETRIEVE THE CODES WITHOUT A SCANNER AND FIND THE PROBLEM.
Will watch all your videos no matter what as it never hurts to have just a little more knowledge on everything and I'm a Chevrolet guy...Have a great day...
This video is awesome I am sure there is very useful information in this for diesel guys and anyone who is willing to pay attention . That is a nice truck. Keep it up you have my interest.
Shoot yea! I like anything with an engine and tires, keep up the good work, I'll watch you work on gas, diesel, lawn mower, 4wheelers, whatever you got to work on I'll be here! Great job sir, another successful fix!
Hi JC & Mrs JC been watching for a while now here in the UK and as regards to the contents of the video im just quit happy as long as your fixing stuff and I'd like to say Mrs JC sure does a great job of the inside, makes them like new so both keep up the great work loving all the videos here in the UK, mark UK
I have a 2001 DT466E short 35 passenger school bus with only 63,000 miles with 1815 hours on and all maintenance records kept indoors it's whole life. I love this video. More please.
I’m interested more International information. Mine is a DD Series 40, 1999. It needs an overhaul because I let it overheat. It will eventually move from a Gillig bus to my ‘92 Silverado Crew Cab Dually. The Allison will also make the move. It may be a B 400. I don’t remember. Anything I can learn about DT engines will be helpful. This is an excellent video. I love the fact that you do not have some narcissistic compulsion to fill the screen with your face. Well done!
I'm having this same issue with my truck replaced, fuel filter, relays, cleaned canister, had a diagnostic and mechanic could not figure out the issue summed it up to being an oil pump which is super expensive to fix so I was hoping it was not. After seeing this video I'm convinced this is my issue and will have him take a look at this tomorrow for sure.
Thank you so much for your video!! Our truck had the exact same problem. Couldn’t find any mechanics in our area to work on it, but you provided the perfect solution. Many Thanks Again. God Bless.
This is solid info, JC. The Ford stuff will probably continue to be your most watched videos but there are things to be learned in your non-Ford videos too. The only real downside to these are the time you need to put in making them. Time being a finite resource. The DT466 . MaxxForce DT, "The legend," as Navistar now calls it is an excellent mid range diesel. You, sir, have fine taste in trucks.
i have no training so the videos are just for enjoyment. there are many people out there who can do this far better, more accurate and faster than me for sure.
Thats the point. You aren't a pro and neither are your subscribers. I hope to be as good as you are at working on trucks. I do it because I enjoy it. Not because my schooling and job or business rely on it. When I've gathered all the stuff to do so I'll swap a front axle under my F250. A pro would tell me to get one thats already a 4X4. You showed how relatively easy it actually is. Thats the kind of info you show guys like me how to do. Thank you, J C!
J.C., I like your common sense approach. I'm a 60 year old guy.. ole school mechanic that has always done all my own repairs.. I am a also union certified pipe welder for over 40 years now, and I have a small pipeline and oil field construction company, with mostly old trucks and equipment.. My main welding rig is a 1996 International 4700LP DT 466, with over 650,000 miles, that I've been running over 20 years relatively trouble free.. I have done an in-frame at 400,000, a new 7 speed Spicer trans at 450,000, and new rear end bearings, seals, 4 new dicsc brake calipers, hoses, and all the normal things a truck needs.. but so far I have never replaced the the turbo or injector pump.. which I am about to do soon, due to the mileage and a small diesel fuel leak from the injector pump, that I have yet to pin point.. It runs like new and I am still running it daily til I swap out the pump and turbo with some new ones... I just wondered if you had a video on the injector pump replacement of old 96 mechanical type DT 466..? I also am running a 93 Peterbilt 379 with 3406b, 13 spd , with only 400,000 miles, that has a few issues, like with the trans shifting, and air bag suspension levels.. also a 1986 GMC General with a Cummins 400 big cam and a 10 speed trans.. and six other trucks that are all military tractors, and dump trucks, crane ...which all run the Cummins with Allison auto trans.. and a 59 International R190 truck crane with only 700 actual milles , that I bought from the Air Force museum..that was retired in 79.. I plan on a using it after a complete refurb of all the hydraulic seals and what ever else it may need.. I'm also running a 68 Cat D7E dozer, a 86 Cat D4E dozer, a 76 Cat 225 excavator, a small komatsu trackhoe , and five farm and industrial Ford and case , and Swaraj tractors, a 2002 Bobcat 753G, JLG 40 4wd manlift, and a JLG scissor lift... My son and I enjoy working together and being self employed.. Keep up the good work and thanks for your videos.
my dealer keeps the pucks in stock and has to order the o rings! took me longer to get the shifter and dog box out of the way than it did to repair the engine.
Dog house is not that bad. Now the shifter is something else. On my side, there's a few other things in the way. A/c hoses were added after unit were built. School buses.
Great video! The injection oil pressure needs to be around 800 psi to start. Not sure what year your diesel is in this video. Before you pull the high pressure oil manifold pull the main feed hose from the high pressure oil pump and use compressed air (usually 120 psi) to pressurize the manifold. Any leak down will show up. Just because it's a ton of work to re and re the manifold.
i have done that with other high pressure oil systems but i never even considered doing it to this one. i have no idea why i didnt think of that for this problem....thanks for pointing that out!
The theory on this was easier for me to follow than trying to understand why the Dodge was holding coolant pressure overnight... this truck sounds good to me for what miles it has (this truck will take you anywhere you want to go & even made it to the shop crippled) & l think it's trying to start better/sooner...l didn't hear/notice a change for when the high pressure came on - l think you have to be in the truck for that
Now it fires up a looooooooooot easier. (Just thinking about two former coworkers who had problems starting their Maxxforce DT buses every morning...just wonder if it was this.)
How did you get the valve cover off? The wiper arm to passenger side doesn't give clearance to get over the back valves. No bolts on wiper arm. Frustration
Great video! Re the regen, have you done a video on how to or what to do? Also, re the parts used on the repair, is there a place to order or just use a local dealer? Really learning from your videos, appreciate it!
Very helpful i had the same problem with my truck for almost 6 month and I got the chance to see the o rings and replace them when I was replacing 1 injector, but still 1 injector fualty, some questions for you brother. How can I check if the injector is getting enough volts and is there an easy way to check thank you in advance.
Great video. I've been working on heavy equipment for years and now retired. Every once someone talks me into working on something. A friend of mine has a 4700 IH that will not start without a shot of start fluid but will start fine all day long. We had an issue with contamination of engine oil in the fuel to the point the fuel was really black. I called my injector and pump rebuilder and asked if there was some way the fuel could get into the return fuel. Yep he says O-rings on the injectors. Thought, could be the starting problem. I installed new injectors w/new O-rings. This did not fix the start problem. I am going to keep looking for the problem and will fix it cause it's got me pi$$td. Great videos. Thanks for your information.
maybe you are losing the fuel prime and it will hold it throughout the day until it sits over night again? possibly the high pressure oil pump is bleeding down and emptying the lines and it has to crank long enough to refill the lines before it can make pressure?
@@j.c.smithprojects Yeah. I'm going to be sniffi'n up that tree but thanks for the confirmation. I will let you know what I find. or if I decided to set the thing on fire and send it to the land of Valhalla. Thanks again.
Your videos are very informative, I have a 2006 4300 dt466, when I'm driving and come to stop light my truck shuts down and it continues to do that every time I come to a stop, do you have any input on the problem.
I have a 2000 International 4100 that does the same thing, but will start with ether. Today I found a blown fuse named "ign auto xmsn ether start". I replaced it and so far it has started fine. Is that related to the issue? It appears that it fixed it but not confident yet.
i am aware. i was addressing the starting issue in this video. the dpf issue might be addressed in another video. i recorded the dtc's and cleared them. i want to run it through a drive cycle and see what we have to work with.
Yup those DPFs are the main reason I don't buy trucks made after 2004, that garbage just doesn't make it worth owning and operating a newer truck. Dollar per mile they cost so much more. I love the HEUI fuel system, they make it possible to run some really dirty fuel. However on a hot no start situation I always start with the HPOP, *most* of the time it is the problem or maybe a oil change is all that is needed. I'd really be suspicious when it already has extended cranking time to cold start. I always hook a gauge to the HPO rail and check the pressure first, also disconnect the ICP sensor as well.
Flush the oil system with ATF auto trans fluid. Drain Crankcase, replace filter, fill crankcase with ATF. Run the truck for about an hour. Check to see if the ATF is blackened. If so, drain crankcase, and refill with ATF run truck for an hour and inspect fluid. If fluid is clean, drain crankcase replace oil filter, & fill crankcase with 15/40 conventional oil. I am extremely familiar with DT,VT, Maxxforce engines Sounds like you have a low pressure oil system leak or pump issue or a weak IPR injector pressure regulator.
The info you said in the beginning about the fuel and injectors only apply to the maxxforce 7 or the pre 2010 maxxforce...2010 and later use a 7th injector (doser) to inject fuel to the dpf which that is located after the turbo
Please dear, I need your help. My 2012 international DT466 dont start when cold but starts good when it gets hot. And also I need to know where its crankshaft position sensor. I searched for it on the flywheel housing as I saw on the interenet but I didnt find it. I search for it cause my rpm flactuating while cold crancking. Is there any advice??
i have a detroit 14l that needs in framed. i hope to get it into the shop sometime in the new year. i am so behind of my projects right now, it will be months of finishing what is already going.
I hear you! If you weren't so far from Iowa, I'd come over and intern with you to learn! Appreciate your rugged, "down-home", no nonsense content. Keep it coming!
Hello JC, Currently have an 03 Durastar doing thesame thing, do you have the part numbers for the O ring used? Also, did you check the O rings on injectors along the time youwere there? Part numbers plese if you have it. Thank you for the video
I'd say a oil change and maybe some additive might help to. Have you seen where general motors and international are doing a truck line together? International Cv series I believe they are called.
Older dt466, 436 and 404s if you start them up real fast and its running before oil pressure has built in the cold, you can hear when it builds lol itll die down and quiet down a bit.
My 01 dump truck with the dt466 does the same but it’s smokes blue white ish smoke and kinda spits a sputters for a min and acts like it’s lacking of power I might replace my hpop and see if that fixes it thanks for the good information !
white smoke could be insuffient fuel. whether it is the fuel supply to the injectors or the injectors not firing properly. some tests are worthwhile before you load up the parts cannon and start spending money.
I noticed at the end of the vlog after you made the repair, the re-gen light remained on. Will it re-set after 20-30 miles of running it or do you have to clear the code with OBD or something?
