I had a bad bearing, so I assume the axle shafts were the soft recall ones, so I bought repair bearings to save myself a head ache.

Really great video. I like how you show the mistakes you learned from along the way. That always happens and it's super helpful to see someone figure out all the unknown crap you're gonna experience before you have to do it yourself. I'm working on this same repair next weekend. Great video dude . Believe it or not , though it is long winded , this is probably one of the better rear bearing videos . Love that rust reformer too, use it all the time on corroded suspension and brake components

Thank you very much ! What the experts ( three I had went to because of damage to axle housing bearing sister damage) couldn't solve here you basic mechanic helped me solve issue ! For your info the repair bearing I bought came with 1/8 to 1/4 to stick out of axle housing instruction. Thank you again !

I think I did something wrong installing this. or maybe I smashed it too hard lol. also beware!! Dont force that C back into place in the differential. because all the force used to get it in is exponential getting it out again lol. one of these videos I forced it in and man did I struggle to get it back out later

@@bobspurloc the C clip went in with out a force I also made Shure not to go out side of 1/8"-1/4". Used to hammer in axle before this repair bearing. try using your bearing puller the rivers with nut locker. Thank you

some of my videos are way longer than others. its because I want to show as many steps as possible for a DIY perspective. I make mistakes for the same reason. and I probably make comments how someone is probably watching what im now doing and about to whine about it lol. in the end there will still be people who wanted to see xyz and complain. or insist their way is better and make u wonder why they are watching, make your own video. i'll never try to appease whiners but instead 100% feed them... they are gluttons

rebuilding the differential? or just swapping rear end lol. make sure you have that bearing puller! they arent fun if you arent prepared to pull them lol. man does differential oil stink!

i try to show everything, but truthfully it's just better to replace the axle also. you just never know the quality of the bearing you are getting. amazon has because a very bad place to get any car parts they are either junk from asia or replicas from asia.

that repair bearing exploded a week later... redid with dorman axle/bearing... funny story noise still was there... turns out the noise was the front right bearing... which was replaced years back so really threw a wench in the diagnosis... left front bearing has 250k on it... but may have to do with the front right coil had a lower portion missing... but anyway... its all a simple job except for the differential part being annoying.

Oh ooops! looks like all my new vids I forgot to put the year its an 03 Sport with a PI PCM. That right repair bearing exploded though so I just replaced the whole thing with dorman axel and bearing it comes with. I returned the exploded repair bearing to amazon lol... It exploded after like a week. not sure why.

When doing a how to video make sure to skip all the steps to install the bearing and make sure to shut the camera off! That way everybody will go WTF how in the hell you install the bearing ? Thanks man learned so much keep up the good work !

sarcasm is a must in life. so I assume I did this! lol. however I dont believe there is anything learned seeing me slam the bearing with a sledge while trying to film it. I showed what I used to protect the bearing and hit it. at least I think I did. I have another video on this same topic. installing the bearing is the hard part. removing the old is the problem which I think I clearly showed how vital a puller is. however that can easily been seen as useless info until you trying to do it your self with the wrong puller and you accidentally tear the bearing apart.

@@bobspurloc Most how to or DIY videos go step by step. Alot of people have no knowledge of this or the procedure and or tools involved to do a complete job. That is why they go on youtube. I had to go through the dif on my Crown a shop over tighten the pinion nut I had to go to Utah and pick up another diff and haul it back to make a good one. I tried like hell to pull the bearings out and replace them for the axle bearings I have a bunch of pullers and slide hammers no matter what I did I couldnt budge the bearings I had to leave them I replaced the seals and put it back together . Well two years later pass bearing went bam . I put it in the shop and tore it down and it ground a groove in the axle and its toast . I still have the NOS bearings I ordered from Ford and Motor craft seals that I had gotten for extras I didnt know I had the seals. I also didnt know you could rent the special puller for the bearings from Advanced until yesterday. I wish I would of known back then . At the time I was pulling apart two diffs changing out parts been on the job over a week and I was burned out and tired and pissed off so wasnt thinking clearly. I need an axle now and I got the puller from Advanced yesterday but now I am down until I can get an axle .I got one ordered from Oriely it wont be here until Tuesday but its almost $200.00 you cant buy just the axle you have to buy the whole kit , I hope and can find one used some place so I can still use my Motor craft bearings and seals I have . Never fails you try and take care of your car and it explodes in your face you beat the shit out of it and they run forever just amazes me how people beat their rides and they just keep going and going

FYI, you can rent a proper bearing installer also I just use sockets. I think I duct taped the socket to the bearing to make it stay in place blah. another video I trying to get the bearing our with the dumb scissor type and ripped the bearing apart. I then rented the puller and I think I was experiencing what you say. It appered with just the bearing sleeve in that the proper pulled wasnt working. it kept slipping off and pulling out. however I persisted and eventually it pulled the sleeve out. I had the sawzall ready lol... I have 3 videos on doing the damn axles on this car. at least 1 of the videos I show closely how to take apart the differential and to be very careful with the spider gears! u dont want those falling out! also I mention that pinion nut I caution that you better make sure your socket is tight. a shop probably used red loctite on yours which is insane. also not to force the C-clip in because your are going to have a nightmare getting it back out! if inserting the C-clip takes effort then one of your bearings isnt in all the way or one axle isnt pushed in. one video I show just reaching over with leg to push the axle in as I insert the C-clip lol. my repair bearings I installed here the right side imploded a few weeks later. Im not sure if it was defective or I ruined it trying to get it to go slightly farther in. I ended up just getting axle and bearing from amazon because it was like $120. after doing all that work.... the scraping noise was still there... turns out the scraping was my front right hub bearing which I then replaced LOL. again with the hubs in this car 100% rent a puller it will save your sanity. I was 100% it wasnt that bearing because it was replaced around 5 years ago. so I made my self think it was the damn rear bearing as these axles have issues. I was pretty sure when the front right hub was replaced my shop put a used right rear axle in which meant it may have been the soft metal ones.

@@bobspurloc When trouble like this happens my Mom used to call it the Shit Fairy damn Shit Fairy landed at your place. No I went yesterday to Advanced and rented the puller I am no f ing around. I do marine repair for a living and used to be a Ford Tech . I got a bunch of pullers on a board old school American Made Proto and some of them are Snap On . Non of those two years ago would budge the bearings I could get a good bite on it with the jaws and set up a slide hammer but they would not budge. I really pissed me off to leave those old bearings in there. I hate doing things half assed . But it was the end of the week of pulling the old ruined diff out and making a good diff from the two I got in Utah . Plus I am an old fart and fat and dont crawl around the floor like I used to, That makes it worse, Trying to get this weight off. I call it the Grunt N Fart Auto Shop ! By the end of the week I was done body hurt like hell pissed off and burnt out. I wish I would of know then you could rent the right puller. I am going to try and call a wrecking yard in Battle Mountain tomorrow I just need the axle I dont want to toss the motor craft bearings and seals I have . I would like to use them. If I can get one in BM and they give me a good price I will jam tomorrow and go get it . Otherwise the other one will be here Tuesday. I hear ya on the sawz all I was thinking the same thing hahahahah. Something to consider on the 8.8 and its very important when you do the pinion seal before you take off the pinion nut always count the threads from the top of the nut to the end of the pinion . If you take and impact and zip the nut down you will burn up the bearings . And Old 12 bolt out of a GTO hell yeah zip er down but not on a 8.8 . I dont have to mess with the pinion this is one of the diffs I got from Utah and swapped out parts from each one. I went motor craft on all the seals . It sounds like you have the same luck I do with cars they are worse than women 😂

LOL... for weight try a keto type diet, not really to abide by it but doing it for a few weeks u realize the garbage u been eating is why the weight stays. Im basically limiting my carbs to well under 100 a day. which means no bread! limit the candy! lol. after losing 15lbs u can occasionally eat a burger with a bun but stay away from bread the next few days. all really depends on ones body. but anyway lol... this car is pretty simple to work on. ive even dropped the valve body on the transmission to repair a broken c-clip made a long video on that. first time i ever took apart a valve body on a tranny lol. I did the J-mod. then had to open it again a month or 2 later to put springs back in as it just seemed wrong even though it was suggested. this car will die like my daughter envoy from frame rot although not anytime soon. hers was used for boat launching so rear frame took a hit but still it was good for 270k. hope all goes well LOL... check the rear control arms too. I had one of those go bad. but really most of my issues were because the car got T-Boned right center lower area. thats what messed up front right bearing. prob rear bearing. rear lower control arm. broke front right spring which I took me 5+ years to notice lol. the other stuff happened years after the t-bone, but obviously it was the cause as the left side has no issues all original still lol.

The play by pull and push in on the axle is normal, but if you hear noise by turning or if the play is excessive it will be the bearing.

sadly, I cant recall if this video or another.... but the grinding I was hearing while driving was actually the front right bearing... which really made no sense as that was replaced around 8 years ago. where the left one is still original. I made a video for that also.

Hey nice video thanks for all the details. So on my crown vic the rear right wheel sticks out about a few millimeters more than the left one which is actually noticeable if you look closely. I think it has something to do with what you are saying at the 23 minute mark

are you sure you have the correct shaft? there is another shaft that is slightly longer. the bearing wont make a shaft stick farther out it can just not allow it to push all the way in. you will realize that when putting the C clip back in at the differential as it wont fit or be tight. u shouldnt force that c clip in lol or u will not like trying to get it back out lol...

My 01 Grand marquis Lse has been making a scraping noise,I thought it was dust sheild,nope. RIGHT axle bearing is screwed. It took me over 4 days of taking wheels on and off and finally jacked it up and ran it in gear to find out the bearings are screwed. Not sure if I will need over sized bearings or not. Thanks.

its not oversized bearing. its offset repair bearing. if u watched my video the bearing is the hard part here. ASSUMING you rented/own a bearing puller thats the difference between 2min removal and 2+ hours. the hard part is the differential. if u endure my ramblings at any point make sure is the differential part. the bearing must sit properly in... dont dare force the differential pin in to hold the axle because the bearing wasnt all the way in... because understand that force u use to get the pin in will require the equal and opposite to get it out.... and well its not a simple task to apply that kind of force getting it out.

nice! there was a recall on certain year axles due to ford didnt harden the area the oem bearing is at causing early wear. dont quote me but I think it was 02-03

I replaced my bearing/seal and now my ABS sensor is engaging. Can I disable my ABS and drive the car until I can fix it later? I live in the south, no ice or snow conditions. I know you're supposed to say no, but is it possible to drive without it?

@@bobspurloc The ABS ring on the inside of the hub. The ABS pin keeps getting stuck and clicking on that ring

well that shouldnt be hitting the ring. that is odd. is the ring wider than the one you pulled out?? you can pull out the sensor a little bit and put a washer between sensor and screw hole. that will pull the sensor away from the ring. I did that on one side because I the idiots who I let replace the rear end once put one in that was too long. note the sensor can be extremely hard to pull out if not touched in awhile lol. dont break it! I think I gently loosened mine with vice grips

u have to push he axle in after removing the PIN. did u watch the video or just choosing to ask? I show in the video im reaching over with my leg and pushing it in with my foot. or one of the videos I do lol

S10 has same setup where you need to open the differential? I think my daughters Envoy had that for the rear.

there is no hub in a crown vic rear axle. that is the Axle and the point of the video. u either replace the axle and bearing or use a repair bearing

yeah. there is only 1 way a repair bearing can go in. I put on in on both sides. the driver side is still good. the passenger side imploded in a few days. It is possible I damaged it while installing it. I'de suggest avoiding using these unless you are 100% sure the shaft is eaten or you cant afford $120 for a dorman replacement at amazon. they are very difficult to get in compared to a normal bearing and even harder to get out.

sounds maybe like a worn rear bushing in a control arm upper or lower. well that wouldnt make noise while driving. that can be a few things. a blown out bearing would make noise and possibly bang when you put car in reverse. could also be differential worn. but most likely bearing left or right side. you can know easily if its a bearing by lifting rear tire off ground and see if you can move it. probably take tire off

Yeah I got it at the shop now have gotten to it in time it's coming from my differential a screw had drop in his hand he said it's no the u joint it's gotta be a piston ring or spider joint or sumn

spider gear. well the only screw I know of is that holds the pin in place. well are they going to rebuild the diff or get a junkyard one? a lot of shops are scared to rebuilt difterentials. its easier to get a junkyard one. then u have to deal with are they swapping your rotors ebrake etc or using the junkyard ones lol...

I assume you mean the axle shaft? the shaft itself isnt likely to unless something else fails. when the bearings fail they eat into the shaft. also there is a recall on bad shafts that werent hardened where the bearings touch and those fail also.

Quick question, how the hell did you get that repair bearing in? I hammered it and couldn't get it in to the oring know the new repair bearing.

I think I show I taped old one to new one.but if you cant get it to the oring that's like the easy part. getting it all the way it is the hard part as the clip in the differential isn't going to fit and u shouldn't force it in lol... or you are going to have a nightmare getting it out.

NOTE. I think I destroyed this repair bearing trying to get it to seat in properly as it imploded a week later so I replaced the whole axle shaft which came with bearing and seal.

posi? may be the differential. you would easily hear bearings at the axle ends. if its a diff like mine maybe the Cross pin as that stops getting lubed when you spin the wheels. I noticed mine was badly scored from doing that lol. I would think you would hear roaring from the differential if those bearings went bad.

I cleaned the metal out. the diff area didnt have metal there that I saw or recall, I dont have the knowledge to properly replace those anyway to get lash etc correct

knocking or tapping from the same location??? driving calmly straight? only taking turns? only putting car in reverse? a bad bearing will roar not knock or tap.

Did you ever find out the issue? I just got one and i think you described what my car is doing, and I can’t figure it out. Sounds like a slight knock when you get up to speed (60-70 mph) and also you can feel a slight bump. Also feels like it’s coming from the rear of the car, maybe the diff? I have no clue. At first I thought it could’ve been the transmission mounts but I have no clue at this point. (It could still be the trans mounts, I haven’t looked into it)

@@singularity528hz No I never did, the engine blew up not too long after this comment lol. I don’t think the sound and bump had anything to do with it, I still think it had something to do with the rear end, something with the rear drivetrain.

that brake spring? nah, when its installed properly it doesn't go anywhere near the abs ring teeth. but you really need to question how anyone can test drive a car after installing those backwards and not hear that. This particular rear axle was from a different car so those springs had already chewed thru before I got it.

However that is a good observation! Other source of scraping is the ABS Ring hitting the ABS Sensor, I think the idiots who put this rear end on put the wrong sensor in. I didn't mention it in the video but I added a washer so it didn't stick as far in. but either way, I corrected that spring and still heard the scraping.

Well... I drove the car with all the ebrake stuff removed and still heard the scraping. truthfully the bearings were worn and are cheap to replace. the diff fluid is the biggest slap. but the scraping noise remained. I had brand new rotors brakes all around, and am pretty sure the carrier bearing is fine. I had no metal in the diff. I could not find the source of the scraping. I just ignored it and it's barely heard anymore. I can only hear it taking sharp right turns. but its hard to reproduce now. I mean metal on metal rubbing in the rear of this car can be very limited things. I never put my studs on this year so that was when I was going to recheck that ABS Sensor. I know for a fact the shop replaced it and I show its eaten into. I have a replacement one but never checked how deep it is. I should go check that now lol...

Repair bearing exploded. gasket isn't worth it. even at the dealer they do not put gaskets on diff covers. just rtv

doing it yourself? If you just replace the bearing with a repair bearing which will move the bearing area to another part of the axle shaft meaning you shouldn't need another axle shaft. then costs are like $20 for repair bearing, around $40 for axle fluid. $3 a seal $3 RTV sealer. If you want to replace the axle, then the dorman replacement comes with a bearing, bearing seal and lug nuts for $125. so $125 + $40 fluid + $6 seal/rtv. oh you want to Loctite BLUE the spider gear pin, do not Loctite red that! If you pay a shop to do it, they will insist on changing the axle, they will get a dorman axle $125 charge you $250 for it, declare the bearing in the kit is junk and charge you $30 for a $10 bear. charge you $50 for axle fluid and RTV sealer(gasket calling the sealer the gasket then charge you $10 for "sealer") so $400-$500

I may have crushed that side bearing. same one is in the left side. but truthfully that was most likely nothing wrong with the bearing I took out. I can't find the source of the scraping on the right side. The noise was there when the rear end blew up. I didnt feel like replacing it, so a shop replaced the whole rear end with a junk yard one. noise was still there... ive replaced the axle the bearings, noise there. I removed the parking brake shows and wires, noise there, I replaces pads rotors. noise is there. I just decided to ignore it. I dont see any metal rub areas. I was thinking carrier bearing, BUT again that whole area was replaced differential axle tube etc. so there is nothing left to check, probably something stupid that doesnt matter so ignore ignore until it shows itself. this idiot here put the brake springs in backward also. went for the first drive and heard a scraping sound. wasn't what it was at first. i took the drums off and saw the grove worn into the tone rings. i then realized my mistake.

not sure what yor talking aboot. I didnt skimp any parts. are you talking about the differential cover gasket? yeah it seems they didnt use one, but its not really needed. unless you want to struggle to get the cover off LOL... I could barely get the chisel in there man. this is why I work on my own cars. I've taken the cover off a few times after this and totally used a gasket after seeing the importance of it...
