2003 Mitsubishi Magna TL (third gen, facelift) - another Aussie oddity!

Yeah, I skipped a generation! Before the Mk1 Magna (see • Australian Mitsubishi ... ) I tried a Mk3. The 3.5-litre V6 engine sounds amazing! But what's the rest of it like? Plasticky. But frameless doors! And odd French styling tweaks.

The central locking is not broken, the 1st press of the button opens drivers door only. A 2nd press opens the rest, it’s a security feature many Aussie cars have. I love these cars, they’re refined and have a charming engine, very torquey too.

The Magna was quicker than the 380. Look at the Ralliart Magna for example. Some of the model's put out 210kw while weighing 1450kg. The 380 had 175kw & weighed 1650kg in comparison. Plus the Magna offered AWD model's. I did love the TMR 380 mind, still can't believe the size of the brakes.

This facelift caused great controversy when released, the designer was forced to publicly defend it. The previous model Magna was much loved and very popular and the impression was that this Frenchman had come in a ruined it. People can get very parochial about such things. Thanks for the test, I don't know how you managed so many. Cheers.

I remember to this day being at the 2006 Melbourne motor show and visiting the Mitsubishi stand with the new Magna replacement, the 380. I looked the car over thoroughly and one of Mitsubishi Australia's executives came up to me and eagerly asked what I thought of it. I tersely replied that 'You're going to go out of business, I was that underwhelmed with it' little did I know I would be so prophetic. By the end of 2008 the once proud Tonsley Park factory was shuttered and the 380 had come to an early, but necessary end.

@@markgriffiths3804 One of the reasons why Mitsubishi went out of business was, petrol prices were going sky-high and people werent buying 6 cylinder cars. Holden, Ford & Toyota were able to weather the storm because they had sufficient other models to see them by, but Mtisu didnt. And to make things worse, GFC struck mid-2007. And to rub salt into the wound for Mitsu, petrol prices came down 2008. But by then, they had already made the decision. Pity.

@@wizzard5442 yes, the 380 was the wrong car at the wrong time. Personally I think they should have done what they did the first generation Magna and taken the smaller Galant, widened it and used the 2.4 4 banger and the 3.0 V6 instead of the frankly pointless bloated 380. The Toyota Avalon was a similar attempt (and dismal fail) to introduce Australians to large front wheel drive cars. The Magna and Camry proved that their size was a handy niche that had plenty of buyers

@@markgriffiths3804 You're so right re first gen Magna. That was the whole idea of it - roomy inside but short on length for better road dynamics & easier driving. And also with the 2.4 litre. Ah no, I’m pretty sure the 380 was transverse FWD like the Magnas. I remember because the various Australian police forces were not enamoured with FWD cars, but when Mitsubishi came out with AWD Magnas they were more than happy to buy the higher powered versions of them; but when the 380 came out the AWD option was dropped, so the policed stopped buying then due to their bias against FWD. I suggest you go do a search.
@froggy0162
@froggy0162 10 месяцев назад
@@mickvonbornemann3824 lol. Yes, it was also transverse FWD - like a million other cars! It’s a different platform though. It shares the Magna engine, but that’s about it. It was also available with a 4 cylinder in the US, and the platform was able to be made in AWD. It was never AWD in the Galant (or 380), but there was an SUV version called the Endeavour that was AWD. Research is good huh ;)

Yes, you have to love the 6G7 series engine! I have the 3.8 6G75 motor in my Mitsubishi Endeavor SUV here in the US. Quite a heavy vehicle, but even at that, the 3.8 gets her movin’! 😁 I’m not sure how torquey the Magna 6G74 engine is, I’m imagining it is very flexible, but the 75 motor has bags of low end torque which is very useful indeed. It certainly doesn’t need to be revved that much, but can easily deliver there too when asked. It’s funny you point out that the 3.5’s power tapers off just before 6 grand... mine does the same too! Thanks for that, I thought there was something a miss with my engine! One thing I enjoy with my Endeavor, is that I can bury the right foot from standstill in a way so that both front tyres don’t initially wheelspin and still the tyres are FIGHTING for grip! Torque steer at that point can be rather disconcerting if I’m not paying complete attention! 😎

In Australia for the second and third generation, the low- to mid-spec models were Magnas and the upper spec-models were Veradas. The Veradas also (mostly) got unique (bigger) bumpers to meet US design regulations but they also provided differentiation locally. Diamantes were pretty much Veradas, but sometimes parts that were Magna only in Australia (especially sports bits) became Diamante parts in the US. The first-generation Elite that Ian uploaded earlier was before the Verada name was introduced so the Magna name covered all specifications.

Another factor was that Mitsubishi essentially launched the 380 by saying "here's the new car, if it doesn't sell we're closing our Australian factory". I suspect a fair few potential customers were scared off by that and ended up looking elsewhere, even if they were in the market for a sedan.

I working for Mitsubishi in the US in 2003, we sold the Diamante and it's quite a shock to see how much lower spec the Magna was inside in comparison, particularly the instrument cluster. The Diamante had a rather nice 'invisible when off' set of gauges and all manner of other nice little gizmos, had one as a company car for a while and quite enjoyed the experience, it was definitely my favourite in the Mitsi lineup at the time, but it was a hard thing to sell on the US market as there were so many more appealing options for the money.

I totally agree. Mitsubishi started losing traction around the time the Diamonte cancelled, and the Galant took over. Then, because I believe Mitsubishi was having financial problems (the NUUMI plant where they manufactured the Galant closed, or partnership with Ford end, confused on the dynamics, my memory is hazy on this subject), that even the Galant started to look cheap, and sales dropped off precipitously at Mitsubishi, to the point where it is now part of Renault. And remember the commercials at the time? Dirty Vegas was featured, Days Gone By playing during the commercial, to which they took off. So advertisers played a role in that to remember Mitsubishi by.

@@johnd8892 Not sure. Perhaps Fuzzdog can answer, but my recollection from this side of the Pacific was that it was pitched as a premium offering in NA. Even if the exports were cost-neutral, the additional volumes would drive part and build costs down at the plant. For a long time, Australia had schemes in place for Australian automotive manufacturers and suppliers to give tax relief and subsidies apart from the occasional bail-outs.

The Mitsubishi V6s always did make nice noises, but the fuel economy absolutely tanks if you make use of all of the growl. I did a long, cross-country trip in a Mitsubishi Galant V6 and made lots of use of the growl as it had a lovely auto box that was super willing to kick down. It was a lot of fun. The issue was, at the end of the journey I filled it up and did a quick MPG calculation and discovered that it had turned in less than 20 mpg. Oh well, you pay for your fun one way or another, but that seemed pretty horrible for a mid-size saloon, even with a V6...

I had a TF Magna station wagon back in the early 00’s it was also a base model but had in my view the sweeter 3.0 litre V6 engine, we travelled just over 300,000 Kim’s when it was sold to a friend who did another 100,000 K’s in it & l have to say it was probably the most reliable car that l have owned, never had an ounce of trouble whatsoever & did a lot of interstate trips, they may not be the most desirable car to a lot of people but l tell you what l genuinely miss my old Magna, as an aside they were extremely popular as a rep’s car as they were priced well, l think their was a ralliart version with body kit & l remember the all wheel drive version used the evo transfer case, unfortunately a lot of the earlier Magnas have disappeared as they were cheap on the used car market & just driven into the ground, yes they were good cars if you looked after them.

I actually thought the 4 cylinder was "enough" engine for the car, although it certainly wasn't quick. It was economical and could cope with a full load of passengers and luggage without any bother. It did many years of good family-car service without any fuss and never let us down.

Basically, Diamante was the global name adopted *after* the Magna. The Verada was the 'lux' version (in Oz, in other markets it was the Diamante), And then Australia got the 380, which was itself a reworking of the US developed 9th gen Galant. The styling was aimed at the US market, not the Oz market.
@tedburnard841
@tedburnard841 4 года назад
iatsd That is why it looked so bland! I think the 380 was the death of MMA, no wagon, no AWD. Geez if they had made an AWD wagon with a 3.0 turbo diesel (straight out of the Mitsubishi Japan engine list) in upmarket spec, they could have marketed it around 50 grand. Nothing on the market like that, except a VW Passat 4motion or an Audi Quattro (at around 70 to 80 grand!). Holden (the Adventra was a disaster) and Ford had nothing near it (Territory was Falcon petrol six only).
@iatsd
@iatsd 4 года назад
@@tedburnard841 Bear in mind that Mitsubishi was flat skint at the time. It had pissed away all it's money developing the 9th gen platform for the US market that was supposed to be a new global platform too (& it *was* a damn good platform), but then had no money to develop cars for anything other than the US and Japanese markets. Mitsubishi Australia wasted $500 *million* making changes to the US Galant just for the Australian market. It was never going to recoup that amount, and they never should have spent it. It forced them to close the Australian operation (among others) and try to survive for almost a decade on face lifts only in most markets. The only place getting genuinely new cars was the Japanese domestic market.

Mitsubishi didn't do very well in the US. We had a Colt Vista which had a great interior but questionable drivetrain. It was full time 4wd and did well in snow but it had an enormous turning circle. The transmissions were known for having a lot of internal drag and the one on ours was also known for having a pin come loose internally allowing it to go into 2 gears at the same time with explosive results - literally, the 5 speed transmission blew apart. Usually when you get rid of a busted car you get some cash for the parts potential of the vehicle but since they were all having transmission failures there was a surplus of engines and a shortage of transmissions making it the only car I have ever gotten rid of where I had to pay a disposal fee. The whole vehicle seemed to be designed to fall apart at 100,000 miles - exhaust, transmission, and a lot of other smaller items like door latches etc. As a brand they developed a reputation for burning oil and other mechanical issues and have announced that they are pulling out of the US.

I had a 98 model Magna. Forget what model maybe TF. Bloody good car. Pretty heavy on fuel but I didn't muck around with dawdling. Absolutely kicked the pants off Fords and Holdens up to about 60kph. Possibly due to being about 200kg lighter and FWD. The ride was absolutely fantastic. Barely felt a bump. Nice and comfortable to drive for a tallish guy like me. Lots of boot space. Only being a 3L it did rev quite high compared to larger competitors on the highway speeds though. 9:13 call me weird but I like the sound of a 6 over an 8 Just a hunch on my part but I guess the reason they stayed with FWD was for cost reason. No need to for a heavy and costly driveshaft to the rear wheels. Yes, it is odd having a V6 with an East West engine needed for a front wheel drive though.
