Thanks for the info I changed those parts yesterday 11/12/22 with OEM parts on my 05 f150 5.4 it took me 30 minutes both sides.after months with this annoying knocking. My engine purr’s like a cat again No more knocking 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Seriously guys before you go dropping thousands on new parts get yourself FORScan and diagnose the phasers and timing first then go from there. More often then not the ticking is just loud injectors or could just be a loose spark plug(s), improper ignition pigtail connection or exhaust leak(s). Use 5w30 full synthetic and change oil+filter at LEAST every ten thousand kilometres. Instead of blindly tossing parts at the problem(s) you guys need to work your way through diagnosing all the systems and it will be a lot more rewarding 😉
This is probably the most 'common sense' comment I have read. I do not have time nor money to just blindly be throwing new parts on my truck. Is FORScan a phone or a computer app that gives me the meaning of the codes my truck throws? I recently purchased a VEEPEAK a friend recommended. Have not chosen a program for it to communicate with. Thanks for your comment and your help to us all. I am very green in the mechanics arena and try to get educated here on the internet. Just like school used to be---some great teachers and some not as great. :) Jesus bless.
Honestly will be doing this. I’ve seen way too many videos of replacing parts left and right to fix the sound. No check engine light but am hoping to get a code or two that can point me in the right direction.
Yup. I've got a want to be diesel too..Went out and bought a super 40 Flowmaster. My triton seems to have much quicker throttle response. Much better noise!!😎
I've heard 100 ways to fix ticking noise. Call Ford. There's only one way. Change timing chains and phasers. I did mine at 150 thousand and now I have 250 thousand miles. Cam phasers guys. Don't let anyone bullshit you.
About every 6 years I try to do some maintenance type jobs on my truck. This time I am looking at these as well as the rocker followers. Have no background in mechanic work but depend heavily on you guys to lead the way. Thank you for good instructions and good camera work. Do you know if the rocker replacement is really hard? Looks like folks are saying this particular make and model NEEDS these to be changed....gulp. Thanks for any comments, suggestions and advise on the rockers....or the VCT. Jesus bless.
If you have scoring on your cams/aluminum motor is pretty much done. It will run as is but will have constant problems. Even if oil pressure at the filter housing shows good oil pressure is lost and week at the cams and phasers lifters and tentioners. Truck will run but you will face all kinds of codes popping up/or not lol . This motor is great when it is in good shape but there are just to many little things that make it self destroy eventually.
The only correct way to fix this problem is replacing cam phaser as well. May have to replace whole timing set as well. I replace whole timing set and oil pump as well and this fixed the problem. Timing chain tensioner seal has failed on mine and broke chain guides as well. No more noise form the cam pahsor or chain. I still have some tapping noise from driver side wheel well area. Not sure what it is. I replaced roller followers and lash adjusters as well although all of the ones I removed turned out to be good. Now I'm suspecting exhaust leak, but could not find any obvious signs of leak yet.
A short screwdriver with a brass hammer and your vise grips would make it easier to remove that seal and if real careful with patience it can be removed without damage to the seal. I would have used a 1/4 drive ratchet with a long 6 inch Torx 27 extension one piece to get that bolt out with a magnet handy just in case to keep it from failing into the engine. Grip the solenoid and pull up at the same time when unloosing the bolt so they come out together, be gentle. When installing the seal I would have put a thin coat of oil around the seal and inside the excess hole with a socket for tapping it in gently, and evenly, not the end of the screwdriver you could have damaged the seal or cracked it the way you were installing it you lucked out.
Those VCT solenoids you got are knock offs or a newer design if you look at the original ones that came on the truck you'll see a difference, there's a foil placed in the middle of the valve look closely and you'll see it, this collapse on the so called OEM ones I bought and caused my issue,I wound up cleaning the original ones that came on the truck removed the cotter pin on the end clean it out put it back together and put the back in the truck and good as new....
Do a timing job, with new Melling High Volume oil pump(M340HV or M360HV) and OEM everything else. The oil pump is the weak spot and causes many problems. They even came out with new improved roller followers with a smaller lube hole to increase oil pressure. Just got done with mine.
I had a shop put a small oil plug at the bottom of the hole where the solenoid goes. They said it aslo increases oil pressure now I have p0022 timing retarded code I swapped out the solenoids runs good until I step on it. I think the oil isn't draining & causing the solenoids to not function properly. Have you seen or heard of anyone putting oil plugs in the solenoid manifolds?
@@hecreg151 cost me about 2500 in parts but I replaced a lot of stuff, roller followers, lash adjusters, intake manifold, water pump, power steering pump etc
For those with the "ticking" noise DO NOT listen to (most of) these youtube "techs" in the comments. You will hear nonsense like "I guarantee you", "it's a cracked manifold", "it's _ - - - 99% of the time" etc. Your ticking can be caused by several issues such as, loose spark plug, lifters, roller followers, vct solenoid and phaser issues. Like most things in life, the "easy" fix is not the reality.
I assumed this will be the same for my 08 because 04-08 is very similar but not in this case! There is 0 room for the screw driver to fit. Need to take apart the engine to get to it for the 08 5.4L
My 5.4 with a 170K and after changing everything $3500.oo later, ended up being the main and rod bearings another $2800.oo, I really think this should be ford recall, Should've have listen to the Ford mechanic and got a new motor.
@@Xmech-id6ol Yup . I am in the same boat. Only have 83,000 and my cams have deep scoring on journals and aluminum heads. Probably looks the same on crank bearings . Had a slight chain slap on my valve cover with finest of the shavings got in and it will never run right again. Truck runs but due to throwing codes and misfires l can't pass inspection in my area. New phasers chains tentioners and vct soleniids along with plug and coils and HV 360 oil pump. Total waste of around 2000 in parts.
I had a p0316 code come up turned out spark plug and ignition coil on cylinder 4 was bad. Truck is quite in drive thru/along walls but still ticks when pressing gas. Doesnt tick visously in idle anymore and no longer shakes on standstill. Guess its better but still kinda worried
The trucks still running strong so I'm just going to live with the ticking until it dies. It now also has an exhaust leak on the manifold which combined with the cost of timing chain replacement almost totals the truck since you can buy them for 5k nowadays. Thanks for watching.
@@striker1211 No I did not see other video, but not surprised. I am fighting my 4.6, 16 valve from intake manifold to now chain rattle. I am just going to run it till it drops.
I would have used a 1/4 drive 6 inch extension and ratchet with a T27 socket, this would have made it a lot easier. With the seals I would have used two pics extra long handle for prying them out one on each side. When replacing I would only use GENUINE FORD parts. Nice video though, thanks for sharing it.
Well now Bob how bout you come over and show me how to fix mine it sounds like you know what your doin and i wont get in your way!!! Lol just kiddin I going to fix mine up this weekend my buddy has a grease pit he said i could use but im gonna use my fire pit after my neighbors leave for the day!
Hey how you doing my name's Brian I replaced my vcts both of them couple months ago and the truck have been doing somewhat okay but it started doing it again we're shutting off taking I tried your trick and I unplugged them and took it for a drive and is not doing the issue does that mean those ones that I put in there they're already messed up and should I try flushing the system and try and get some new ones or what should I do
Keep in mind you should only use Ford brand vct solenoids and phasers. I ordered an inexpensive eBay kit and it looked great. Paid good money to have it installed and within 24 hours one solenoid went bad. Replaced it with oem and a week later the other went bad also. Now I'm getting ready to replace it as well and hoping the phasers don't need replaced again as well. I hate to pay to do the job again within 1k miles.
My truck it's working perfectly but I feel a lil vibration when I'm on a stop thanks I will replace my selenoids since my truck has 250000 miles so it's Time thanks bro
Exhaust manifolds and gaskets will fix the clicking sound. The clicking sound is the exhaust valves... because your exhaust manifold is either cracked or warped. Usually, on a cold day and the truck hasn't been run, it will be louder than after you've run it for a while. Usually goes away as the exhaust manifold gets heated enough for the metal casting to expand. That will fix the clicking sound. The end.
GB Fallen I have a 2006 ford f150 super crew 4x4, around 60k to 90k you'll start to get a tick, a slight knock, its the timing components, the vct valves can cause the tick, but generally, the guides and the tensioners are going bad, the vvt phasers go bad too, ford over engineered the fuck out of the 4.6L and 5.4L triton motors to save a few dollars in fuel, (more passes by the pump) if you replace all the timing components you might as well replace the oil pump with a high Flo pump while you're in there. Youll have to drop the pan to do it, which means youll have to drop the front axles too. And never Ever run a thicker oil in those motors. All the timing components are oil fed to operate, I don't care what anyone says don't run heavy oil, PERIOD
I had this same issue with a 04 F150 FX4 5.4L. I checked all of the cam rollers and they were all good. I swapped out all of the lifters since they all had some play. I changed all of the timing components except for the cam phasers. I still have this ticking problem. VCT solenoids are next since now the truck tends to rough idle at low RPMs and even stalls sometimes. Hopefully this solves the issue for me.
Hi i have a 2005 f150 5.4 and i replaced the vct solenoid three times already reason for replacing them is because they were leaking from the gasket and i just dont know how to fix it anymore the vct solenoid gasket keep going bad anybody know why this might be?
China copied many of these parts but used bad materials poor gaskets they dumped 1.4 billion dollars worth of fake parts they been found every were even dealerships hard to see the difference
How is that funny? And, you're likely wrong, not likely a blown chain tensioner gasket, because that would quiet down after a few seconds. And, 'lol'? It's 2008 again? Is that a command to everybody else, or is that just an indication that you're trying (trying) to be funny....
Roudter they slap the cover and the oil pump constantly with a blown tensioner . Especially after the slack chain destroys the guides. 5.4s are what I do on the daily
Roudter regardless a blown tensioner 85% of the time is the cause to any issue they have . Hot idle oils thin and spewing outta the blown seal starves the entire top end of the engine. Cam journals groove out lifters collapse they spit roller followers out
@@DDescalchuk57 quick question Dustin, is it a worth just to take the frnt cover off and replace the blown tensioners, guides and upgrade the oil pump?
Does the vct come with the caps? I need to change mine.mi truck runs smooth but the scanner says otherwise. It shows this code P0012..your sounds like a diesel. Anyways did you fix the problem?
Hi I have same problem on my f150 5.4 code p0012 but truck runs perfect I replaced the the vct selenoid I use Ford parts but still got the problem sound like diesel. You fix your truck ? Please help me thanks
Check your exhaust manifolds, if they are leaking get ready for a job to get them done. And when I say a job, that's way understating the fantastic experience of doing those on these trucks. If I would have to do it again I would have just pulled the motor. I had 3 studs already broke off up inside the block before I even started. Of course two of them were the ones behind the strut tower on the passenger side. I used a welder to reach up inside and hit the broken ones quick, the heat broke them free and pretty much spun out by hand. But yeah if it's noisy in an enclosed area it's the exhaust bouncing around from under the hood and makes it very noticeable with the window down.
I have a f150 5.4L 3v it sounds like a diesel truck but new oil change new VCR solenoid but I don’t hear any nocking it just sounds like a quite diesel why?
I've read that using a heavier oil will quiet the ticking sound but you could possibly starve the top-end of the engine of oil since the pump was not designed for the thicker oil. I'd rather have ticking than scored cam journals :)
striker1211 ..... Even 5/30 oil? .... Does yours idle alittle rough??? I've gotten rid of tick but my 06 idles rough for couple of years now. Feel it in seats and doors. Changed plugs, coils, clean throttle body, MAF, no codes. no vac leaks that I know of. ...... Any suggestions??
The new fuel filter I bought a month ago is sitting in my sock drawer haven't gotten a chance to change it. But doing so next weekend. I will be excited but pissed if it was a damn $8 motorcraft fuel filter that removes the hideous idle cab vibration. I also recalibrated throttle body, idle and shift points and nothing just slightly more power.
NeewollaH * yeahh, mines doing the same. Really rough idle and I just changed my spark plugs, air filter and soon I will change my fuel filter. Let me know if it works👍🏻
@@striker1211 I had the same noise and I inspected everything when I did timing and found a roller follower (rocker arm) was no longer rolling and scored up the cam. Went to pick and pull pulled a couple followers and a cam and put her back to gether last and she runs smooth and quite. I can send videos if you’d like.
Fomoco. 5.4 4.6 junk triton. Worst engine ever hands down. Nothing good about them. Absolutely nothing. All should have been recalled trashed and whoever came up with these shipped to a deserted island with no food water or chance of making another mistake as bad as this one..
@@moparcharger8642 I have 2. One of each 05 4.6 with 273000. 04. 5.4 with 130000. Both known to blow plugs out and even just changing plugs becomes a disaster. Transmission problems with both. Huge issue for ford anymore thinking someone left dodge to work for ford. Gonna move to Toyota or Nissan.
@@moparcharger8642 the 5.0 was a great engine no issues. Not sure about the newer ones but why fix or change something that isn't broke. The ford issues with transmission have been Goin on a while. Should have been a recall. Something like ends breaking off clip then more issues. Seems like anymore every company has major issues weather it be engine blown at 90000. Good ol hemi lol. Trans issues frames body panels rotting out on something that's 3 years old. Crazy how thing become more expensive and made cheaper..
