Michael Miller I replaced the dash because of the cracks in hooked the hfl. Just replaced the pad on the center arm rest was a $100 worth every penny. Original transmission replaced the switches for it once might need to do it again before next winter. I need to replace the right front axel and will do that on my next set of tires which I will get also befor next winter I think I can get two more years out of it that will put me at 340,000 and in need of a 3rd timing belt. I will see how it’s holding up at that point and decide if I’m keeping it or moving on.

TL is reliable IF you dont modify it. Lol Things to look for that go bad on it if you are buying used TL: (from my personal experiences) Transmission (auto, you will be safer off with a manual) Paint (fading) Dash (cracking) Leather seats (tearing) Oil pan drain plug hole (Aluminum strips) Power steering pump (bad o-rings causes noise) A/C (stator went out) Thats pretty much it, if its a stock TL you are trying to buy.

I bought an acura tl 2004 with all the problems you mentioned above smh.. except for the oil pan thing.. everything else was a problem my tl had, I bought it a year ago and thought all I had to fix were the seats and the exterior paint and that was not the case. bought it at 3k, repair cost so far 2.5k

Thanks for the review. My '07 TL (base w/ navigation) is about to turn 125k, had it for 2 and a half years, not a daily driver. It runs about like new, love the shiftable automatic and dropped fog lights in the front with beautiful black paint and very dark tint windows. This generation seems to be everyone's favorite design. I stick with the mid-priced tires but I'm sure if you go with the Acura recommendation, probably a noticeable difference. The only thing that seems expensive is the 93 octane fuel, maintenance costs are relatively low. I think Acura is the most competitive in that area.

I'm not sure if it was intentional or unintentional on Acura's part but the cup holders are also sort of heated and cooled. The air flow to the back seat vent runs right under the cup holder so when you have the AC on it cools the drinks and when the heat is on it keeps them hot. I always forget about this little feature but it's pretty neat.

You can add an aftermarket transmission cooler. This is why the 07-08 Acura tls have more reliable transmissions.

Love the color and great review ! I have an 06 redondo red TL. Unfortunately my transmission was slipping too and I replaced the fluid like you but the symptoms came back even worse 2 months later ! I would get a shudder when I kept accelerating even just merging . Got it rebuilt for 2400 bucks . This happened at 140,000 miles . I hope it’s ok now . Still doesn’t idle as well as it used too maybe will change the spark plugs too .

Thanks! Yeah the transmissions are an issue. That's unfortunately why I sold my first TL. Mine doesn't need replacement yet. Hoping it'll stay that way for a while longer!

I've had a 2006 for 2 yrs now. Got it with 85,000 and it now has 101,000. Changed the trans fluid 2 times but occasionally still has a small slip going into 2nd gear. The timing belt tensioner now needs to be changed and plan on getting the entire belt kit and water pump. It's advised to change them around 100,000. also, the front valve cover has a slight oil leak and it runs onto the exhaust manifold, under hard acceleration.

@@colenkas44 Not long after my comment, my mechanic replaced the tensioner and such. After picking up the around 10pm, and driving home, this dude ran a STEADY red light and T-boned my car. Totaled. Anyway, that's what happened to my transmission. LOL. I now have a '07' but the issue I now have is a delay from park to drive. Which I have determined is the pressure switches (which I bought and will replace). Also, this car was also leaking from both valve covers and I replaced them,

Very nice TL! I had an 04 ABP, with camel interior, but unfortunately I totaled it in the rain. I loved the car so much I bought an 07 NBP TL. I already did some exhaust work, and exterior work to freshen it up even more and it definitely turns heads. I agree these cars are one of the best designs to ever come out of the Honda design studio, and seems to provoke other drivers to race you quite often ;-). I'd suggest you create an account on Acurazine..its a wealth of knowledge and will save you tons of money down the road. Good luck

Adam Reveal Yes, however I have a 2007 and it has been extremely reliable. I'm a college student and take my car to Crown Acura dealership to get all of the maintenance done. The dealership many be a little expensive, but it saves you money in the long run. This was my first car when I turned 17 years old back in 2013. Over the 4 years that I have obtained the car, I have had to perform timing belt service, transmission fluid every 30,000 miles, oil change every 4,000 miles. I did have to replace the motor mounts, because it was a factory recall. I would definitely recommend the 2007-2008 TL and you checking out www.consumerreports.com for more information. Hope this helped and if you have any more questions, please let me know.

Purchased my 06 TL 4yrs ago with 90k. I am 18 and still using it every day for school/work/going out. It's 170k today and I agree with everything said. It's all about maintenance with these cars. Have done timing belt/water pump, motor mounts, spark plugs every 60-80k, transmission fluid every 30k, oil change every 3k, rotor/brake pads, ball joints, battery. I rebuilt my transmission after it went out on me twice. Another issue I would like to bring up is the HFL module, these systems are 10+ years old and outdated. In my experience, most of the HFL in 2004-2008 TL's don't even work. If you leave these units plugged in, they can drain the battery. Once I unplugged mine, my car stopped dying after sitting for a day.

Very true - it is all about the maintenance. I've heard about the HFL module draining the battery. I don't think it's been an issue for me but would like to know how to unplug it anyway. Is there an easy way of doing this?

Michael Miller very easy to remove. The HFL is a BIG issue especially in the base models. Just remove the dome light assembly and the HFL unit is plugged in and unplug it, it’s all you need to do. I notice once I removed the HFL my car started up much faster and easier, car doesn’t die from sitting anymore. Not a matter of if HFL will fail, just a matter of when it will fail.

You have taken very good care of the interior...looks brand new. I have a 2007 TL, and the seats are lightly cracking, and the dash is cracked bad. couple of questions= You don't mention changing the timing belt/water pump cost....did you not do it? And the O2 sensor, did it go bad( check eng light?) and if so at what mileage? Oh, and you don't mention the Hands Free Link....everyone including mine had issues.....did you luck out and not have issues with this.?

Timing belt and water pumped were both replaced by previous owner shortly before they sold. The dealer I bought from confirmed. The O2 sensor started having issues around 127k miles. I had put maybe 2k miles on the car by then. It set off a check engine light. As far as the hands free link, I haven't even tried lol. I couldn't ever get it working in my last TL, so I didn't even bother with this one 😂

@@mikemillermph Thanks, the Hands free link is a common problem almost everyone has this this generation of Acuras. The thing keeps running after you cut the car engine off and will drain the battery over time. Most people just disconnect it...and that may be why your's won't work. Seeing one of these with no dash cracks makes me jealous.

I saw some pretty bad dashboards when looking for this car. I almost decided on one with a cracked dash but only 55,000 miles. It looked like it had a lot of other issues though, so I ultimately went with this one instead.

Adam, I wouldn't hesitate recommending the 2004 TL as a first car for someone in high school. The only thing I would say is shop around and research thoroughly. When I was shopping for this one, I looked for TL's with only one previous owner, relatively low mileage, and no accidents. This way you minimize the chances of the car being in bad shape. If the potential transmission problems make you nervous, you can always look for an '07 or '08 model. With the TL I owned previous to this one, I was quoted $1400 to replace the transmission completely.

Sounds like a good price for the miles! I'd make sure everything is in good working condition before buying though. Last thing you'd want is to drive it for a couple weeks and have the trans or something else go out

Great video. I just bought an 06 with 125,000. In great condition with great service records. I paid 6,900. Just noticed an oil leak. What should I do? I have a 97 integra gsr with an oil leak and it has 225,000 so I’m not too scared but am a little worried.

Yeah cracked dash is a common thing with higher mileage TL's. Mine is just now starting to crack

I own a white 2006 Aspec and luv it.i also have a 2009 bmw M5 but still like to drive the tl better. Ive owned a 2008 type s and honestly didnt notice a power difference at all its all just hype and a way for dealers to rip people of with decals lol

I've always wondered if the difference between the base and Type S was a noticeable one. I test drove a bmw m240i the other day and to be honest, it felt 90% like driving my TL. I'm sure the m5 is a beast comparatively though haha

I have an '05 TL. It is an okay car. Very small interior, yet ample trunk space. Transmission issues, Yes. My 2 other cars are 2002 Altima 3.5/ 5 speed manual and a 2006 Maxima 3.5 Auto. These,..are very spacious inside. The Auto has already been serviced on the Valve Body, The Altima with the 5 speed manual, Leaves both the Maxima and the TL sitting between stoplights. The TL is better on gas, a good around town grocery getter, NEVER would I want to drive that little rascal out of town on a trip. Leave the comfort and performance to the Big Brothers. ( The TL is like pedaling a bike, once you get going, it does ok}

Ah forget about the TLX, i drove all TLX trims 4 bager to Aspec fwd and sh-awd. The biggest issue i had with the TLX is the interior material, its so dam cheap. Its shouldn’t belong in a mid $40k car. The suspension been tune toward ride comfort even on the aspec model. ELS Studio sound system on the TLX is a joke since they lost 5.1 dts capability. Even the dealer technician test drove my TL-S agree its the finest sedan Acura ever produce.

If you decide to buy TLX (especially V6) stay away from 2015-2016 model as the ZF-9 trnamission will needed replacement. In 2017 they fix the reponse time in the lower screen interface.

It unfortunately does not have aux. If I remember correctly it does have some sort of way for connecting your phone, probably Bluetooth, but it didn't work for me so I haven't bothered with it.

If you want aux buy the 2007 to 2008 model year but the 07 and 08 have their top speed governed to 135mph whereas the 04 to 06 can reach 150mph on the base 3.2 L v6

I don't really worry about it. I don't do much driving as it is, so the extra cost isn't bad

Michael, I have an 04 TL one owner, 114k, really good condition. All of a sudden last week the dash cracked. If this happens to you what would you do? There are so many complaints online but Honda won't recognize it is a problem with the 04 to 08 models.

Yeah the dash cracking is definitely a problem in the 3rd Gen models. But to be honest I haven't researched how to fix it. If it happened to me, I'm not sure what I would do other than have my local Goodyear look at it to see what they'd recommend. They have all sorts of connections in the auto industry. Maybe try the acurazine forums?

Michael Miller From my research it's the glue they used those years. My son has the same year I have and his dash looks horrible. Think you can only put a cover over it because I have had the dealership tell me forget it

The seats don't fold down. Not sure about the 2005 - 2008 models though

So I am thinking of buying a 2005 TL that has 175,000 miles is it worth the buy for $4,000?!

The price seems about right for a TL in good condition with that many miles on it (according to Kelly Blue Book). If it were me, I would ask for a carfax for the car that is up to date. If the carfax is clean and the car checks out mechanically, I'd go for it. Just make sure to have a mechanic look at it. $4,000 is fairly cheap for a vehicle but an awful lot of money to spend on something that's not working well.

Michael Miller I have the same color but my interior is a tad darker and my side mirrors have some type of liquid rusty look inside the actual mirror it won’t come out lol I have a 05

Terique Bates you must have heated winter package mirrors. I have the same glue bleed thru look to my mirrors. It’s a flaw.

Man your seats are really clean. We're you in prison and wasn't driving it for 10 years? Lol jk... Great post though as a fellow Acura TL 3rd gen owner. My mpg is erratic. I've seen 15mpg at times in the city and sometimes I reset the ecu and get 32mpg highway.

Lol! No I definitely wasn't in prison haha. Very interesting with your mpgs but I don't know what could be going on. That's odd for sure
