All-wheel-drive, good crashworthiness, favorable Quality ratings, and improving scores for Performance make the 2005 to 2009 Subaru Legacy sedans a strong consideration for buyers looking for five-passenger transportation with all-weather readiness.

Just bought a 2004 2.5ltr leggy with 141,000 miles on it. Auto transmission hadn't had new oil in at least 100,000 miles and plugs had never been out. Diff oil was like gloop. Amazingly it ran for so long. Gave it a massive home service and it runs factory fresh!! No gasket failure. It's soooo smooth to drive. Proper quality motor.

Thank you. This video was very helpful. I'm looking at a 2009 Subaru Legacy Special Edition with 125k miles on it. The owner says it's in great condition but I'm nervous about the gasket problem you mentioned. I don't want the gaskets to have a problem 100 miles after I buy it.

I have a 2008 legacy I replaced the head gasket at 100k when doing belts because they were leaking and creating a burning oil smell when driving. I have the legacy for 3 years got in with 84k other then that it has been reliable.

I had a 2006 Legacy, just sold it this week, it's been a fun car to drive, it has a nice road feel and I've mostly enjoyed it, but it's had more maintenance issues than previous cars I've owned and it had only 103,000 miles on it. The steering has been the main problem, with me ultimately having to replace the rack and pinion. I've never had to do that with any other car. Other issues were dashboard rattles (I had to pop out the vent grill and stuff in a shop rag to firm up the duct), front end bearings, power steering pump, seat upholstery that wore out at 30,000 miles, and CV boots leaking grease onto the catalytic converter resulting in a burning smell that lasted over a year. I took it in the shop a couple of weeks ago and they said the (manual) transmission was making a funny noise and that we'd need to watch it, it might need a rebuild. That's when I decided to trade it in for a Mazda.

The achilles heel is the boxer engines with head gasket failures stretching over many many years. It's debatable if they've ever actually solved it. Almost considered a standard maintenance issue between 150,000 and 200,000 miles.

The Subaru head gasket thing has apparently become a standard ploy with some mechanics looking for excuses to pad the repair bill. I was told by three mechanics at three different times I needed a new head gasket, and told "yeah, Subaru's had a lot of trouble with head gaskets." I was subsequently told by two others at two other times that the gasket was fine.

The head gasket issues is with the 4 cylinder variant with a boosted turbo. The 6 cylinder used in the legacy doesn't have these issues. Unless you're implying all boxer engines have gasket issues including the entire Porsche 911 lineup.

Just in case anyone reads this comment in the future and gets scared, the 'notorious' head gasket issues were primarily attributed to naturally aspirated EJ25 series engines from 99 to 04, and from 05-11 (4cyl 2.5i models etc). The turbo models used a different MLS gasket, and between that and a completely different long block have a much lower failure rate. That being said, all gaskets and seals can and will eventually fail. Additionally, any vehicle that is approaching 12-20 years and 200,000 miles should probably have gaskets/seals/hoses inspected and replaced anyways. Totally unrelated, but brittle plastic and rubber are the death knell for far too many unloved vehicles that end up abandoned.

If you want more power without the complexity of the turbo model the H6 is the way to go.
