Ford 3 Bolt Starter Replacement: Mobile Mechanic replaces F-150 4x4 starter, from start to finish.
Just a bit after 11am on a cold March morning. a friend calls me and says he has a friend who needs a starter...(turned out to be his brother) "He's got a red 2005 4 wheel drive F-150 with the small V-8. The starter doesn't work. He wants to know if you can go to his house and replace it for him there. He already has the starter..."
I can confirm that this starter is NOT an easy starter replace! A quick initial inspection may look like an easy job, that one hidden bolt on the top is a real challenge. Watch all the way through to pick up some tips to make the job a bit easier, and enjoy a few bloopers at the end...
You've got no more excuses... Pick up those wrenches!"

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

Thank you. I really don't think i could've gotten that thing off without this video. I know you said it in the video but i wanted to add my experience here that its not too bad(relatively speaking) to get at that top bolt with a flex head ratchet, a medium sized(4 inch i think) wobble extension, and a deep socket. Still takes 1000 tries to get it lined up with that bolt, but it didn't seem too bad all things considered.

I couldn't agree more! Until you get to know how to approach that bolt.... it can be super frustrating, or even seem impossible!

Hats off to you for doing that job in the cold, I just changed mine. Not sure if the 5.4 is any different but that is just a miserable job no doubt about it. Hopefully the new starter lasts the life of the truck.

Make sure the mating surfaces are very clean, and that the bolts are not over torqued (incase you might need to remove them again, someday)

Great job! Ford and their 3 bolt starters. Not an easy task working on your back especially in chilly and damp conditions. Those 1" extensions are a lifesaver at times. I've had success with the magnetic inserts for sockets to hold tricky bolts in place but the old paper towel trick works in a pinch.

Thanks 👍 Magnetic sockets would DEFINITELY be a plus!

vice grip pliers have a grip direction and a slip direction the way you were connecting the pliers was the slip direction the way you tell is it pushed off pliers if turned correctly will pull pliers tighter for more holding power you can also tell by the way the teeth are kinda cut like a pipe wrench they will grip more and more if installed correctly
