What can be said about Game Seven of the 2006 NLCS that hasn't already been said?
The game was tied at one in the top of the 6th, when Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer to left that put the Cardinals up by two with 12 outs to go... except that he didn't, because Endy Chavez made one of the most ridiculous catches in Postseason history.
In the bottom of the inning, Rolen added insult to injury by throwing a ball that should have been the second out of the inning into the seats, giving the Mets a 2nd and 3rd, one out situation. In a move that you probably would not see in the baseball of today, the Cardinals then chose to intentionally walk Shawn Green to load the bases, and left starter Jeff Suppan in to face the lefthanded batting Jose Valentine. Valentine struck out, to bring up Chavez, who had made that ridiculous catch just moments earlier. Suppan induced a pop fly to center.
Crisis Averted. Suppan's eventual NLCS MVP secured.
The game stayed at 1-1 until the 9th. With one-out, Rolen singled to left. On the very next pitch, .216 hitter (during the regular season) Yadier Molina hit a ball to left field that did what Rolen's blast in the 6th couldn't - get over the wall to give the Cardinals a two-run lead.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Cardinals called on rookie closer Adam Wainwright to secure the pennant. As if this series needed any more drama, the Mets loaded the bases with two outs, with Cardinals Killer Carlos Beltran coming to the plate. Needing a single to tie, and a double to (probably) win the pennant, Beltran took a first-pitch changeup for a strike, then fouled off a pitch away, before taking a nasty curveball for strike three. Just like that, it was over. Goliath went down hard, and the Cardinals had the National League crown.
For the Mets, it was bitter disappointment. For the Cardinals, it was on to Detroit.

We all remember where we were during this game. I was in my room at my fraternity house at Illinois State. Only 2 other Cardinal fans in that room besides me, rest were Cubs fans. (I have to give credit to couple guys who were class all the way through it)When the bases were loaded and Beltran came to the plate, my heart was about to blow out of my chest. I couldn't sit down, I was pacing out of the room, down the hall and back. I was shaking, nervous, everything you can imagine (as I am sure everyone here was too) after the 0-2 pitch I just hung my head down, I couldn't watch. As the final strike hit the zone, I literally fell over on the ground. Couldn't believe it. 13 years later, still can't believe it. What a night. (side note that week at school I had 2 exams, a paper due and 1 quiz nailed them all!)

Before wainwright threw that first pitch to Beltran Yadi had told him to throw a fast ball down and away but when Yadi got back to home plate he had second thoughts and called change up at the last second. Because he was afraid of leaving a fast ball up and out with Beltran and his power

@MikeJones-cs8gi
@MikeJones-cs8gi Год назад
@MSUHitman 83mph fastballs thrown in big moments of playoff games isn't done that often. Pedro Martinez did it once that I can think of, throwing curves and change-ups in the low 70's. Jamie Moyer, off the top of my head cannot remember if he pitched playoff games later in his career? (I'm not saying he was throwing gas in his early career). Yohan Santana post injury, any playoff games? Oh oh Tom Glavine?? He probably did it maybe even more than once. Then of course my Team Chicago White Sox and our ACE was Mark Buherle but his fastball was like 88-89 could touch 90. But his fastball was consistently 84-85. Oh there was a couple closers who used to run it up there effing fast! Who then figured out how to get batters out by becoming better pitchers. Billy Wagner started he could hit triple digits. Trevor Hoffman closer without super gas. I think there was a guy Rodriguez or Santana/Santiago who threw 99mph type ish then figured it out when he lost 10-12mph off the heater

Was waiting for a long time for the whole game to be posted, walking out of Shea after this game was the most depressing moment in my life as a fan, all year long the Mets were in holes and always came back. We had who we wanted up in Beltran but Wainwright broke off the nastiest curveball I have seen with my own eyes in person. Another reason I wanted this entire game posted was I that I caught a foul ball and for 13 years I was sure it was off of Eckstein bat with Heilman pitching but my memory was wrong.

I was just a kid during this season but I was obsessed with cardinal baseball. I watched every single pitch of every single game in the 2006 season. My mom took me to Busch stadium that year for my birthday to watch 3 games. We live in Florida but my grandparents were always cardinal fans and I just grew to love them. When we went to at Louis in September for my birthday pujols hit 3 bombs in one game against the pirates and it was crazy as hell. During this game 7 my mom let me stay up and finish watching the game but she put a piece of computer paper over my tv screen because she said I could only listen to it because I had school the next day. I tried to leave that paper on the tv and do as she wished but that shit got way to intense and I ripped that paper off the tv the watch the final out of this game. This season was a roller coaster but it was all worth it in the end.

The reason why the Mets lost this game 7 is that bottom of the 6th inning when Valentin struck out with a man on third and one out. Another reason why they lost this game (and the other games) is because the Mets offense was very inconsistent this series. game 1 , just 2 runs (but they won thanks to Glavine's pitching a gem and Beltran's two run home run) game 2, this is the game that got away. The best thing that could happen to the Mets in 2019 would be for them to reach the postseason, win the NLDS, reach the NLCS against the Cardinals, have the series reach a Game 7 with a Jacob deGrom vs. Adam Wainwright matchup, have the Mets score 5 runs against Wainwright in the first inning, and deGrom pitches a complete game shutout for the Mets.
@cardinalsbaseballclassics
@cardinalsbaseballclassics 5 лет назад
As a Cardinals fan, I can assure you ... if Wainwright is an option to start Game Seven of the NLCS, the Mets would have no trouble steamrolling the Cardinals. Although, if you'll recall, the Cardinals DID have Wainwright start a winner-take-all playoff game, give up Six runs in three innings ... and the Cardinals still won, so ya never know.

@@cardinalsbaseballclassics The Nationals actually should have won that game. If you look back at Gameday, you'll see that Storen's 2-1 pitch to David Freese caught the bottom of the strike zone, but it was ruled a ball. www.mlb.com/gameday/cardinals-vs-nationals/2012/10/12/345615#game_state=final,game_tab=play-by-play,game=345615

@@jamieweiner7252 It was a borderline pitch that could have gone either way. It's not like it was an egregious miss. He'd walked the batter before hand, and hadn't exactly been pinpoint with his control, so it's understandable why the umpire didn't give him a borderline pitch. Plus you cannot blame that one borderline call for the Nationals failing to win a game they led by six in the 3rd, and by two in the 9th.

@@cardinalsbaseballclassics True, I guess I didn't think about all the other things that happened in that game. Sort of like how Mets fans shouldn't blame Carlos Beltran for failing to get to the World Series in 2006. There were a million things throughout the series that made it end this way. What if Glavine hadn't pitched a gem in Game 1, what if Wagner hadn't blown the save in Game 2, what if Chavez hadn't caught the ball at the wall, etc. You could go on forever about it. All that being said, I'm really looking forward to the start of the regular season :)

Bottom of the 9th and I get why Floyd hit but this isn't a movie. Gotta bunt the runners over and force STL to load the bases with 1 out.
@cardinalsbaseballclassics
@cardinalsbaseballclassics 5 лет назад
Completely disagree. It's the bottom of the 9th inning of Game Seven, and you're down by two. You do not intentionally give up an out to move runners up 90 feet when you only have three of said outs remaining in that situation. The Mets had a runner in scoring position. Floyd swinging the bat gave them a MUCH better chance of scoring than him bunting. A single scores a run. A double probably ties the game. An out that isn't a double play, and you still have a runner at second with one out. If he had bunted, I highly doubt the Cardinals would have loaded the bases and put the winning run on first, but even if they had, then the double play is in order, and a ground ball sends them to the Series. It is a much better bet to take three chances with guys swinging the bat than it is to give up an out, move the runners up 90 feet, and have only two chances remaining.
@thedreadedmarco
@thedreadedmarco 4 года назад
@@cardinalsbaseballclassics Sorry but the numbers disagree with you. If Floyd had bunted, LaRussa would almost certainly have walked Reyes (116 wRC+ in '06) to pitch to the inferior Lo Duca (105 wRC+) to keep the double play in order. Per fangraphs, run expectancy of runners on first and second no outs is 1.373, while run expectancy of bases loaded one out is 1.520. Bunting was statistically the right move.

@@cardinalsbaseballclassics Floyd was hurt. He wasn't the same with the injury. He couldn't drive the ball. Mets actually got lucky he didn't ground into a double play or worse at that point a triple play. Floyd had no leg power.

@fantasticvoyage262 4 года назад
@@thedreadedmarco But Floyd was a middle of the lineup hitter his whole career. Which means he was never asked to bunt. I'd rather take my chances Floyd would get a ball to drive than bunt runners over when he's not an accomplished bunter. @@fantasticvoyage262 Fair enough. Those numbers assume that Floyd would have executed the sac bunt flawlessly, which is probably a stretch. But my point remains that it's not ALWAYS the case that a no-out state is better for the offense than a one-out state.

This was the yr that during the WS the Tigers were caught using pine tar for the pitcher Rodgers to get a better grip my wife spotted it before me. The saddest thing Tigers fans had to deal with their pitchers made 6 errors everyone lead to a lose. Everyone in the crowd had signs hit it to the pitcher. I really did feel a little sorry when a pitcher throws one down into rf , and the other times were the same it cost them so many runs, We had just come from a headline in N york's 100 Million dollar statue Carlos Beltran who during the Playoffs hit like 360 and had 7 hr We were much more worried because we had seen him take a game away from us.If you have watched the Birds on the bat for a while Steve Carlton who 2 yrs before had carried the Cards to the WS. BoB Gibson took a line drive off his leg that fracture it but still pitched to three more hitters. After we traded him but a guess he want 25-5 with a 1.45 era wouldn't befare off he kicked our asses about as much as Jim Thome who hit like 500 against us with 25 hr and 70 RBI. I worried more about him .

I remember my dad telling me that the starter for the Cards (Reyes) was a bum and that we were gonna smoke him. After the first inning the crowd was in a frenzy when Guillen doubled home Monroe and my dad kept screaming, "See, what'd I tell ya?!". Then Reyes somehow shut us down the rest of the game 😭 Still, it's fun watching those games over again just to remember how good those times were.
