Great game, but I believe #1 USC vs #2 UT 2005 Championship game cannot be dismissed in a conversation of the best game in the history of college football. The winning streaks on the line, the Heisman trophy back story, the trash talking, the media coverage, the come from behind win..... am I right?!
Unfortunately, I have to agree. I've only seen that game one time, as I was rooting hard for USC to win that. But from what I remember, I can't help but recall it being an epic game. Certainly UT's best game ever, no doubt.
While everyone remembers the ending of this game, most have forgotten what a great game it was from beginning to end. Leading up to the game all the talk was whether Boise State could even keep up with Oklahoma. From the opening drive, Boise State stood toe to toe with Oklahoma and had the lead for most of the game until just before these highlights began. Hands down the greatest football game of all time.
I'm forever proud my school knocked down the door, and punched the Sooners/media in the mouth for the rest of the landscape to follow.. Go Orange! Go big blue! Fight! Fight! B-S-U!
The announcers were rooting for BSU themselves tho lol. Everyone wants to see the big program knocked off. I think a lot of media felt the same as normal people; that BSU didn’t stand s chance, but that’s why the games are played and during the game everyone but OU fans wanted this upset. Even as a lifelong fan of OU, I can look back and feel happy for this team and what they accomplished.
4:44 well we got our playoffs.... yet the undefeated non power conference teams still dont get a shot at the title... what did we accomplish.... I guess its a step but still not perfect.
Me too. I’ve never been that into football but I can still remember how this made us all feel in Boise. I was in elementary school back then, am now going to college at BSU and so proud!
+Joshua Day Yup, same here. I was sitting around at the relatives place on New Years, flipping channels looking for something to watch. Okay, here is the Fiesta Bowl about to start. Out comes Boise State. I grew up in the Northwest, I was like "What? How is Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl? Aren't they in the Big Sky Conference? This should be interesting." I was glued to it for the whole game. A classic game, made me a Bronco fan.
The annoyance ptsd of this game is relived as an OU fan living in Oklahoma. I was only 13 at the time but yelled at tv, it was bullshit lol. OU always chokes at the end of every season on every big game since 2000. We have as many heiseman winners as Alabama but can’t do that
Watched this game with my Dad who has since passed on. He actually called a Boise State win before the game. I have watched football since 1967 and this is definitely the greatest game I have ever seen without question.
A game that is immortalized in college football history - and Oklahoma Sooner infamy. It should’ve changed the face of college football, but even though we have a so-called “playoff”, the little guys like Boise State and Central Florida are still shut out even after undefeated seasons. Doesn’t seem right.
It became a business. Over time, the NCAA realized this is how you make the money... watching only the big systems destroying small boys. One day, it's gonna get punched in the face when URI beats a ranked opponent.
Well, Cinncy got the chance this last year, ranked 4th and undefeated. And Bama kicked the crap out of them. It’s easy to play cupcake teams all year long and win them all. Another entirely to go up against actual championship caliber teams. Remember undefeated Hawaii whining about not getting a fair ranking in 2007? Georgia destroyed them in the bowl game.
Boodaviking Boo u must be joking the 2011-2012 season what make the playoffs bc Oklahoma State should have been in the national championship game over Alabama so since Alabama won then Oklahoma State actually WIN.
@@benl9325 Yep it's still broken. "Playoffs" should include the divisional winners of every conference, regardless of rankings or prestige. Why don't they just copy what the nfl does? Makes no sense to do otherwise. To he'll with who can fill up a larger stadium, I want the best each year to play each other.
Some of the most creative and gutsiest play calling in bowl history. I had no dog in this fight but what a perfect ending. A freaking Statue of Liberty play to get 2 points and win it and then a marriage proposal?? WT actual F?! Amazing.
I love how he threw the game ball. Then realized what he did, and tried to retrieve it. lol.. This is one of the greatest games I've watched in my life, and I didn't even have a "dog in the fight".
Don't know who gave this thumbs down except maybe some OK idiots - this is easily a top five bowl game, if not the best. Not a fan of either of these schools and I will never forget where I was when I watched it or talking about it for weeks after. Spectacular game!
+GrandeRed Mine 1.Alabama vs Auburn 2013 it hurt bad 2.Michigan state vs Michigan 2015 3.Stanford vs Cal 1982 4.Boise state vs Oklahoma 5.Texas vs USC 2006
Alabama vs Auburn 2013 Iron Bowl. Alabama vs Clemson 2016 CFP National Championship. Alabama vs Clemson 2017 CFP National Championship. Alabama vs Georgia 2018 CFP National Championship. Georgia vs Oklahoma 2018 Rose Bowl. USC vs Penn State 2016 Rose Bowl. Texas vs USC 2005 BCS National Championship. Alabama vs Auburn 2011 Iron Bowl. Ohio State vs Michigan 2015 The Game. UCLA vs Texas A&M 2017. Oklahoma State vs Iowa State 2011. There are many more I can name but I’m not gonna bother. This was a very good game and it’s in the Top 50 games of all time but the BEST? Hell no!
I love at 0:40 those 4 naive OU "fan girls" after that hook-and-lateral score by Boise State acting like *it's fine, we're OU and we'll win this in overtime*. They acted like because their OU they're entitled to win this game. Nothing made me happier than all the looks on all those self-entitled OU fan faces after it all went horribly wrong for them in overtime. Shows just how spoiled of brats Sooners' fans are, they think national titles and bowl game victories are their entitlements for being OU!
Many people in the Sooner state would say that "a great season for OU isn't measured with a Big XII title or Bowl Game victory, but rather with a national title." The Sooners are ranked 3rd, only behind Alabama and Notre Dame for the most National titles. Since their last title in 2000, OU played in four other title games (from 2000-2010). The Sooners have more 11+ win seasons (22 seasons) than any other school. They also are tied with having more 10+ wins (36 seasons) tied with Alabama. Oklahoma has won 45 Conference titles, 154 All-Americans and 5 Heisman Trophy winners. What gives OU a bad reputation are some of their fans on various message boards are bad sports, lacking sportsmanship, and won't give other teams credit. I wouldn't go as far as labeling OU fans as self-entitled, because there a lot of OU fans that would admit to saying that the AP polls over rank the Sooner team. For instance, this year I would say that we were just an average team, having lost to Houston and Ohio State. I would've rather seen OU play Florida State in a bowl game to measure how much better they were at the end of the season. After all, the Big XII had a dismal conference this year, in my opinion. Boise State was up for the challenge, plus since Chris Peterson took over this program they were an awesome team. Just look at the Washington team he took over in 2014. Two years after he took over the program, he led them to the College Playoffs. And in an era in college football, where a lot of head coaching positions is like a revolving door, OU coach Bob Stoops has been the head coach since 1999 (17 seasons).
This is yet another reason I can't stand Oklahoma University and it's cocky AF fans! They act every year as if a winning a National Title is an entitlement and also act as if a season is a failure if they don't win all the marbles! Oh, plus if you live in OK and want to watch a Sooners' home game not televised on FOX, NBC, ABC, CBS, or ESPN you have to order it on Pay-Per-View (or pay a cover at a local bar if they'll PPV it). The icing on the OU hatred for me came very recently when they kept Joe Mixon on the team after he assaulted a woman and the tape was just released! I'm sorry, but OU is a trash university for condoning a culture of assaulting women! Boomer Losers!
Mike Ellington Boise State won, who cares about the past. This game is going down in history as one of the best games ever played, and OU lost. Deal with it.
Oh please, Oklahoma was nothing until 1946. What happened? They purchased all these great players returning from World War II. The entire program was built on fraud. But then again, your team's nickname is in honor of land rush cheaters.
FlynnRider4 excuse me? Bennie Owen, OU's coach in the 1920s and one of the pioneers of the game was nothing? What're you smoking? If calling ourselves the sooners triggers you so much do you have the same complaints of teams that call themselves the outlaws, devil's, raiders, pirates, etc?
I remember waking my 14 year old son to watch the overtime with me. Wife comes down stairs after we woke her up from yelling at us to get turn the tv off since it was a school night for my son after Boise St. won. Greatest football game ever.
Miami vs OSU(2002) Florida vs OSU, Utah State vs Alabama, Alabama vs Auburn (2010, 2013) Alabama vs Oklahoma, Nebraska vs Miami (1983) Texas Tech vs Texas (2008), OSU vs Alabama, OSU vs Oregon and finally this game. What these games taught me is that the underdog always bite the hardest no matter what.
Keep this in mind as Chris Petersen, now coach of the Washington Huskies, goes in as a heavy underdog against Alabama. Will he pull from his bag of tricks again? Can he give Alabama a game? How can you NOT watch them play???
It's funny that they use this as the exam of why there needed to be a playoff. And then you had Hawaii, northern Illinois, ucf, and after all that the solution is they still don't let small schools into the playoff.
Michigan and Michigan St game made it one of the best game because a mistake was made. this game is the best game ever because it shows an underdog beating a big team with trick plays in the last moments.
I imagine those announcers has so much fun with that game. They sure didn't have to make small talk in the 4th quarter waiting for it to end, that's for sure!
Whether we remember it or not, this set in motion the College Playoff we now have. Never again could you argue a smaller program couldn’t hang with the blue bloods.
This still gives me goosebumps! I cant believe it's been 11 years! I still remember hugging my brother after he scored the winning 2 point conversion. Gosh what a game!
Jared Zabransky is from my home town, he and my nephew were good friends, I help coach when he was a kid, my nephew died and at his funeral Jared took his jersey from the Honolulu bowl and put it on the table where my nephews ashes sat. He picked up his ashes and put them on the jersey. He then said “ I got you bro “. He’s such a great kid.
This is to college football ( cough , cough PLAYOFF anyone ) what the Vilanova / North Carolina championship game is to basketball #DONOTUNDERESTIMATETHEUNDERDOG
