2007 Silverado 4L60E Transmission Oil Pump Rebuild (Ep.4)

With the transmission apart, we will start the rebuild process by completely disassembling, examining, cleaning, and then reassembling the transmission oil pump with new seals and bushings. This is a very crucial part of any automatic transmission, and we will cover the entire rebuild process.
Timeline of filming: June 13th, 2018 - June 14th, 2018
Song List (Order of First Appearance):

Here is a list of resources that can help when rebuilding one of these transmissions (none of these are sponsors, just handy resources!):
Rebuild manual I used to follow-along with (though I wouldn't rely on it 100%):

Many special tips and tricks, as well as tools for this rebuild:

Exploded view diagrams for MANY different transmissions:

Some pretty specific information (though some is biased) and a good chart to diagnose transmission issues):

And here are Wholesale GM Parts Online links to several pages for this specific 2007 model transmission. This website has saved me several times and is the single best free resource I know for hi-res diagrams specific to your vehicle and cooresponding part numbers and information.

I worked for GM dealerships rebuilding these units (and others, like it's earlier variant the 700r4) from '87 to 2007. I would estimate I've worked on thousands of them. I could probably show you a few tricks, but only because of the sheer volume of problems and repairs I've been involved in (including self-induced problems!). You are a very smart guy, extremely resourceful, and your videos are very interesting and entertaining, thanks so much!

I had a question for you. Mine is having delayed engagement when warmed up in first gear. When at a stop or shifting into first, it will go into an almost neutral state, and then w a slight tap on the gas, engage into first and drive like normal. My suspicion is the pumps booster valve (I have the model where I can't get to the boost without removing the transmission and pump, turbine speed sensor in the way on an '08). Does this sound like the problem possibly? Chances the pump cover is bad as well? Maybe because the booster has bored the hole out over time (175k, was rebuilt 50k ago by previous owners local trans shop). I'm going to do a line pressure test tomorrow, obvious see how that goes.

I can’t really fault you for using the zip ties to resize the Teflon seals as that is what I used on my first rebuild and I have little need to troll others. However you need to been carful as the zip ties (especially on the input drum) can cause a small high spot on the ring that can actually end up cutting a wear pattern inside the stator which eventually allows an oil/pressure leak. This is stated for information only. Thanks for making your video!

That said, dozens of bearing replacements in engines & wheels, I've never seen or used myself, any type of Thread lock or similar on Bearings. I've never had a Bearing break loose & spin. That's why Bearings are "Pressed" in. Weather by hand tool or Press. But Good video. Not criticism just I've never done thread lock for bearings.

Pretty darn complete. It would be nice to have spare teflon seals on hand though, and most people replace the plastic accumulator pistons with aluminum ones, but those are not included. Really isn't anything off the top of my head that is missing from a "master" kit like that, though.

@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
For the exact one I used, search "4L60E Transmisson Heavy Duty HEG Master Kit With 3-4 PowerPack Stage 4 2004-UP" on eBay. Honestly, you'd probably be better off with fewer clutches and thicker steels in the 3-4 pack for heat reasons, but I'm sure using the whole kit will be fine. Some people will swear against ALTO in general, some against ALTO Red Eagle bands, but I have seen at least least some complaining about every brand/material out there. Bands are cheap enough that getting a wide one and just putting the Red Eagle in the kit on the shelf wouldn't be a big deal. For a drag car, a street rod with a shift kit, or an HD truck a different clutch material and specialty bearings might be worth it but I think these basic parts will get the job done in an average application just fine.

Your videos are great. You are very knowledgeable. I do have one question on the use of the Red Threadlocker. I know that you can use a torch if you ever have to remove the bushings, although loctite does have a green threadlocker for bearings and races, which might make disassembly a little easier, if the transmission is ever rebuilt again. What brand torque wrench are you using?
@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
High strength threadlocker will only really work the way it is designed to when used on threads, it helps hold a bushing in place but is actually less strong than a green retaining compound in that application. Next episode we actually have to knock a bushing back out when things end up not fitting quite right, it isn't terribly difficult. The small torque wrenches (1/4", 3/8") are just Harbor Freight specials. Their 1/4" wrenches are actually pretty good, especially when having an exact torque number is less important than just having even torque. I have had issues with several of the 3/8" wrenches though so I wouldn't recommend them. The Amazon brand Tekton wrenches I have used (and I have a 250 ft/lbs model from them) have all been quite nice for the price.
@justincrasi4638
@justincrasi4638 4 года назад
Perhaps the loctite helps slide the bushing in, but considering how much force is required to press them in, I question its actual locking function. I could see using them in an engine, but transmission aren’t combustion systems. Maybe loctite is an industry standard?

It is definitely useful for a couple of steps, like checkballs and the plastic pump thrust bearing, but I haven't really found it necessary for many of these steps. I know a lot of people use assembly grease extensively for rebuilds but I haven't had issues with not using it.

Aren’t Teflon seals supposed to be installed dry?
@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
To be honest, that is something I'm not too knowledgeable about. The ATRA rebuild manuals have you using assembly grease to install them, but some teflon seals are pretty specific that they are to be installed dry. Something about the outer layer of teflon sticking to the surfaces it is sealing against on the first startup and oil might interfere with that. I haven't had any issues, but I haven't run a transmission I have rebuilt for 100k+ miles and it probably isn't anything that would make a difference in the short-term. Might be something worth some further research.

@FuzzyDiceProjects
@FuzzyDiceProjects 5 лет назад
Scotchbrite is a great tool for refinishing a surface and perfectly acceptable to use even inside of a transmission, as long as everything is cleaned very thoroughly. The issue with using it for head gasket cleaning is that it is quite often done with the short block still assembled, and it is difficult to keep dust from the pads from working its way into the bearings. If everything is apart and cleaned after the use of Scotchbrite, it is a good tool, even recommended in ATRA manuals.
