Went a little batty on our effort to back that passenger side parking brake off when we did my 08 Taurus. It hit a point and would not back off one more mm. Rather than break something, I started digging for answers and found your video about tweaking the bleeder to vent the reservoir in the brake caliper. This was a very important piece of information that should be linked to this video. It would have saved us many headaches that day, for sure! But at least I found the video, all went quickly after finding out what we were doing wrong. Got some crap out of the reservoir, too, and all seems to be fine after we put it back together. Thanks!

Fantastic tips & step by step instructions. Added 2 cents; Unscrewing brake fluid cap helps a bit retracting piston. Also take out excess topped up fluid to avoid spillover in case it was added by Sunday mechanic as brake pads wore.

GREAT video! I do have a question though. If you have to turn in the piston to have room for the new pad which is wider than the old worn out pad. Then if you put the brake pad nub in the notch how can the piston rotate outward to take up the gap as the pad wears? Won't the nub keep the piston from turning outward?? When you removed the outer pad you can clearly see the nub which does nothing . We could not see the inner pad back. There should not be a nub on the piston side. The piston will never be able to back out as the pad wears.

Brake pad 101...awesome Some of them calipers are very tight to start and if the pads are excesively worn you cant get that tool in to wind the piston back.. Also the other problem is knowing which wayvto turn it...often i struggled to get it to turn only to find its going out not in...but your right with the extra leverage..makes it a bit easier on your hands. Thanks for sharing

Good video. I've never run across the pistons that need to be rotated back in bit I'm sure I will in the future. For those without air tools, a wire wheel on a drill works wonders to get rid of the caliper rust. Make sure all rust is gone and everything bake to bare metal in the spots he cleaned up or things will bind and/or squeal.

Great video Brian. I have a 2005 Five Hundred and I concur those pistons were a bear to press in. By coincidence I bought the exact same piston tool off of Amazon just because it had the left-hand screw handle for Fords! BTW - I kept a wrench on the tightening nut and used it on every other turn of the screw handle. After a while you develop a rhythm and they zip right in. Keep up the great content!

I wish everyone would watch this video of how to do a proper brake job. As a mechanic myself I hate when I get vehicles in the shop that previously were not done properly, Frozen caliper pins, torn boots, and excessive rust. Too many people just remove and replace the pads without cleaning and lubing everything you have pointed out that needs to be done.

Sir. Your video was so super helpful I have had Chevrolets, Jeeps, Subarus in the past and all are just your a C-clamp and pressure the piston in. I have never ever encountered something like this. I thought something horrible wrong happened since I could't get the caliper piston to retard. I learned through your video out the brake caliper wrench and that made the rest of the rear brake job so much easier. Thank you.

So I have a 2011 Expedition with little to no brakes. Pedal basically goes to the floor when truck is running. When I turn it off the pedal gets hard as it should. I've rulled out the booster because the pedal isn't stiff when running. I don't think it's the master cylinder because it was just replaced and year ago and when I turn the truck off the pedal gets stiff and if I keep the pressure on the pedal it stays in place, does not gradually sink so I don't think I have a leak, plus I don't see any brake fluid anywhere. Not on rims either. Is there some sort of test I can do for process of elimination? What about the ABS control Module? Any ideas? Can really use some help on this one

Hey Brian, love the videos. I have a question. I've been told that on rear brakes, you should never push fluid backwards through an anti-lock system as it can do damage. I was told the proper procedure is to clamp off the brake hose and open the bleeder and then reset the caliper. Is this true? Can we do damage by pushing brake fluid backwards on anti-lock brake systems?

Second those rotor hex screws, grind those screws flat on the backside of the axle hub, mine were an inch. too long and rusted lumps. Third use only motorcraft parts, no crap from napper or autowhat-a-call-it.

Other professional repair shop video's say that if you have a car with anti-lock brakes you should have the bleed screw cracked while you reset the piston so brake fluid does not travel backwards from the cylinder up the brake line, which can damage the sensor. Do you have experience with this?

They use the same system on the Transit vans, couterclockwise on one side and clocxkwise on the other. I had to buy a tool for that, because my old one only went clockwise. Incidentally, from what I can see, the tool I got is the exact same one you're using...

Question. Have 2010 sel 150 000 miles.had break job year ago And master cylinder replaced 3 years Ago .brakes are mushy. My mechanic whom I trust said he put through every test and said only the dealer would be able to find problem. What say you?what could it be.he checked abs brakes But nothing showed up on the computer.

Did you ever find out what was causing the mushy brakes? I've heard that mushy brakes after brake replacement is from air in the brake lines...?

How about using the caliper bracket files. I would say most people don't have an air compressor available. Great video! specifically the description of the piston compression.

There are electric die grinders too, real ones, not just the "Dremel" ones.
