First off the announcers know nothing about umpiring. Jeff Nelson did not run down the line to change the call, he ran down the line because that's what the home plate umpire is SUPPOSED to do when no runners are on. He trails the runner down the line to watch FOR A TAG OR A MISSED TAG as well as a running lane violation. He did exactly what he was supposed to do. The camera shifted and we can NOT tell if the fist base umpire asked for help from the HP ump coming up the line... which is correct!
Actually the umpire who made the call can absolutely change the call if he gets information from his other crew members who may have been in a better position to see the play. Fact.
The Nationals broadcaster should have looked at the replay on his monater and it would clearly show that Michael Morse never made the tag on Paul Konerko.
That has got to be extremely embarrassing especially if the ump is a rookie. Not sure why they called a conference without being asked. Makes the 1st base ump look insignificant.
I love the way McLaren reacts to this not because he's right or wrong but because his reaction is for his players so they don't get thrown out of this game and possibly get a suspension. He took the hit which is what every good manager would do.
jc720725 Washington would have had a valid protest based on the OBR rule you quoted. If the protest would have been upheld, the out would have stood, and the rest of the game would have been replayed. Everyone: OBR is the rulebook that MLB uses.
Oh lord...of all the shitty ass things to do. You NEVER show up members of your umpires' team. If that umpire calls for help, then you go help. However, if an umpire doesn't ask for help, don't take the play away from him because he's a rookie! I think the plate umpire should be suspended and fined for taking the authority away from the first base umpire. Now, every game in which this guy has a controversial call, the managers are going to be on his ass to get help from other umpires cause he obviously can't make calls on his own.@Portcityman1: True, but ONLY IF the manager asks for help and help is required or if the umpire did not clearly see the play. In this instance, this was a bad idea for the plate umpire.
I'm going to disagree. On a tag play like this the HP umpire usually has the call up to the 45 foot line. After that u1 should make the call. On a fair/foul call you would be correct. HPU has fair/foul up to the bag. U1 has fair/foul after the ball reaches the bag.
The plate umpire is responsible for seeing exactly what he got involved in there. Watch the plate ump the next time there's no runner going home and a runner headed to first. He's responsible to watch the running chute and to see if a foot comes off a bag, or any other odd occurrence at first. He did exactly what he's supposed to do. Remember, the most important thing is that the correct call is made, not that "a rookie umpire" or any other umpire for that matter might be a little embarrassed. Well handled by the crew,...McLaren however needs counselling for all that rage!
Kirk Wood I think under those circumstances, the manager acted appropriately. He needs to stick up for his players and make sure they don't get ejected. Sometimes the umpires bring it on themselves the rage of the manager.
I work HS, college and minor league ball. I belong to 6 associations and 2 more assignors. And NO ONE in those organizations would EVER let an umpire over rule another ump - unless asked if a "tag was made/foot on base/etc". Someone should have been punished for this.
and while its may not be a mechanic ill give a quick look at the plate umpire. o good one while give you a quick head nod and you dont even have to break stride to make the rite call.
Ok now what u said is kinda wrong, it all depends...In this situation, the call should not have changed for one and one reason only, the 1st base ump did not REQUEST the other umps opinion, tha home plate ump pretty much overruled his call...if a umpire thinks he did not get a good look at the play, he can request what the other umps think and than make a final call...but if he wasn't sure he should have called safe and than ask...but he called out..u don't usually do that
The MLB rule 9.02c says "no umpire shall seek to reverse or interfere with another umpires decision unless asked to do so by the umpire making the call." End of story. The 1st base ump did not ask for help, the home plate ump came down the line, grabbed the 1st base umpire and then signalled for a umpire's conference. Against the rules without the 1st base umpire first requesting assistance!!
@@g00gleminus96 What part of "....unless asked to do so by the umpire making the call." don't you understand? If the first base umpire is asked to get help, he can do so. The plate umpire did not overrule the first base ump, he merely added information when he was asked.
