Was it Vin Scully who did the "stages" of a Jim Tracy argument? 1. Hands up, defensive, pleading his case. 2. Excessive motion, gestures, etc. (moving side to side, pointing, the "scoop") 3. There goes the hat! 4. Crossing arms with hands under armpits, and/or hands up defensively again, starting to scream.
2:44 gives the best look. It hits the LIP of the webbing, hits the ground, then bounces up into the glove. That is a trapped ball. Safe. Umpires made the right correction here.
People commenting on this video aren't seeing the main point. The point is it was so close in slow motion how can they overturn the call after it has been made without even having a video to review. You can't do that.
Of course Jim Tracy is heated, they over turned a call that what appears to be correct, even after a super slow-mo reply its not definitive. Hes pissed because how can you overturn a call in this scenario.
The leather was resting on the ground, and the ball dropped partially on top of that (but center of the ball was on the grass), then bounced deeper into the glove. It WOULD have been a catch, but before the ball fully landed the ball pushed the glove AWAY, hitting the grass.
When its that close, you just respect the Ump, no matter if you agree with the strategic cost/benefits of the call or not. Simple rule to good sportsmanship, which seems to be largely unknown among both fans and athletes.
Wrong, it got some grass, it was not a complete catch with the web underneath...it got some grass as you can see it when up close at 5:14...It was not a catch..it was very close, but its a base hit
Bad umpiring. If you make a call and there's no clear evidence for overturning it, you don't overturn it!!! That's the first thing they teach you in umpire school.
It is impossible to tell because it is clear the ball bounced but it could have bounced on the tip of the glove and into the glove. The call should not have been overturned just because it is impossible to call, especially from the distances the umpires were at!!
This is the version from the Dodgers broadcast with Vin Scully's translation of Jim Tracy's rant: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MVGJGclmpvU.html
The guy is safe, but I don't blame the coach for arguing because the umpire shouldn't have to overturn his call, but at the same time it was a tough call to make.
at 2:50, there is a good angle which i believe shows the ball hits the dirt...it is impossible to me that the ball was not at least partially trapped against the grass...either way, i agree with mick J that overturning it wasn't right given the circumstances.
agreed, it barely touches, but it's obvious after a couple times watching it. barely is enough in my mind. MLB needs to make it a requirement to go to the video recording if a cal is disputed, ending any arguments the umpires or the coaches have.
Ridiculously tough call...as close a play as you'll ever see. I still don't know after all those replays...I can see arguments for both catch and no catch.
The thing is, they got the call right. That was not a catch. However, the fact that they overruled the call was pretty ridiculous. The 1st base ump made the call while the 2nd base ump, who had the best view, deferred to him. So either the 1B ump overruled himself or he was overruled by someone with a further away view. I don't see how that call could be been overturned but also proves why we need replay.
Just bring in a real instant replay for plays like this. Look how much time was wasted anyway discussing and arguing it. Go to the multiple angle replay to the booth and end this stupid crap.
baseball needs to start using video whenever a call is disputed or is unsure before making a final call, looking at the video at 2:40 is perfect for showing what happened, the ball DID touch the ground, it bounced off the webbing and fell out and tapped the ground before being swiped up. this is ridiculous. also, the circumstances justifying ejections needs to be looked at too, the game is being destroyed before our eyes. learn how to use technology and some decency.
I could be commentating this game. No he didn't catch that, nahh he didn't catch that... ohhhhh he did catch that. It's either one or the other. duhh lol
Understanding physics is also taking into account the shape of the glove. The edge of the webbing that you're convinced is under the ball has actually been pushed back by the initial contact with the ball and the ground. Based on the shape change of the glove the moment before the ball bounces and how far back the edge of the glove is when he pulls it up, you can clearly tell its a trap.
Its simple really, IF you use some common logic. If the ball touches the ground, its not a catch, cos ya cant have it both ways. Its called common logic.
It's a catch. I play outfield and know sometimes the ball hits the end of the glove and bounces giving it the illusion of a trap even when the glove is completely under the ball.
James Flatt Look at 5:04. The ball is clearly touching grass. At 5:03 his glove was in a horizontal position. If he would have kept it that way, he would have gotten under the ball completely. But at 5:04 his glove came up at an angel and therefore part of the ball was on the grass.
I could give two shits less whether it hit the grass or his webbing... I care that the umps made a call, then reversed it without anyone having a good enough angle on it to actually make the reversing call.
people who say arguments between coaches and umpires are destroying the game are idiots. Arguments over judgment calls is what makes baseball great. Its the only sport left that actually needs referees on the field because every other sport can just use video to officiate it
I'm sorry but too many of you are depending on the technology to save you. The replay isn't definitive. So now the argument becomes " they made the call already so it should stand". So now the umpires in the position of "damned if you do; damned if you don't" Even in the NFL if the replay is inconclusive the call on the field will stand anyway. Ask the NFL if replay has made a significant difference. Even with it, the fans still bitch and moan about calls.
This call is just too close. It comes to a time where MLB needs to have something to review that. Or, just even just get a beeper and it says "safe or out?"
