This is a prime example of why Varitek is so great. He knew having Beckett in the game was much more valuable than having him in the game and he sacrificed himself to protect his pitcher.
This is still my favorite ejection of all time. I don't like Beckett but if I were pitching I'm sure I'd have similar moments in my career. Edit: Although my second favorite ejection is AJ Pieryzynski asking the ump for a new ball, preferably one he can see.
I must've watched this 1000 times. I tried making out what they said exactly and I think it's: Ump: Ball B: GOD DAMMIT Ump: That ball was outside! B: NO IT WAS FUCKING NOT
I really think these ejections depend on how the umpire is feeling in the heat of the moment. I've seen pitchers get tossed for looking at the umpire funny and yet Beckett is cussing at him but stays in the game. Bizarre.
Joseph Pretorius Yeah Tek was always great at stuff like that. My dad always told me to watch how he behaved on the field as a model for how I should play as catcher. Edit: I love the way you phrased that, Ive Got Bees
Let alone swearing. How can someone say what Beckett exactly said without being ejected? That was arguing balls and strikes, which is against the rules.
Interesting aside, Francona was dealing with a racing heartbeat when this happened, and had to go to the hospital after the game to get checked out. You can see at 0:23, he nearly passed out.
@@riff2072 Not really actually. The call was correct. It looks incorrect based on the broadcast camera placement, but computers and data had it as a strike.
if an umpire calling a ball when its a strike is such an issue then they need to just setup cameras at different angles around the plate and let the umpire sit in a room with all the camera shots of each pitch and then call it.
When the old timers get hurt or go on vacation, then AAA guys come up and want to make the most of it. It becomes all about them and trouble starts. If they used the old adage of looking for strikes, outs, rewarding great defensive plays and walking away instead of being confrontational it would make a better impression on the supervisors and managers grading them to move the ump up or there not ready yet. Some guys quit when the list comes out for the playoffs and their name isn't on the list.
I’m sure the crew chief, Jerry Layne, told Todd to lose the pirouette thing next time he ejects someone. Tichenor was a new umpire at the time, and that stuff was ugly looking.
Beckett wasn't happy with the umpire's strike zone for most of the game. A 2 run lead in baseball is a lead but it isn't a safe lead. He could have walked that batter and then made one mistake to the next hitter and the game could have been tied. All because he didn't get a strike called on a close pitch to the previous batter.
Apparently he was missing calls all game and they were sick of it sometimes you cant help let your emotions get the best of you when the umpire has been so bad all day
IDC if were the most hated franchise. One mediocre year big deal. We are hated because were the best franchise ever. And if you knew a thing about the Yankees you would know that A-Rod only won one ring with the Yankees, and that postseason in 09 he didn't do that well so he was a non factor
