In this video we show how to identify ONE possible source of annoying ticking noises from the GM Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine, which is due to a dying EVAP canister purge solenoid valve assembly. This engine is found in the Chevrolet Cruze and Chevrolet Sonic, among other GM models. Once identified, we go over how to replace this particular part with the latest genuine GM version of the part. The solenoid starts this louder abnormal ticking sound as it approaches end of life (they are never whisper quiet as there is some light sound that is normal though). If you let it go to long, eventually you will get a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) of P0496 when it fails altogether. Now some ticking sound on these GM 1.4L engines is normal too, and from the fuel injector design. So pay careful attention to the sound in the video during the unplug/plug wiring harness test, which is distinct from the "normal" ticking of a GM Ecotec 1.4L engine.
The vehicle shown is a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze ECO, but the procedure is applicable to any Chevrolet or Buick from 2012 thru 2020 with the Ecotec 1.4L turbocharged engine including the following models:
Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Cruze, Chevrolet Trax, and Buick Encore
Chevrolet Sonic replace EVAP Purge Solenoid ticking noise
Chevrolet Cruze replace EVAP Purge Solenoid ticking noise
Chevrolet Trax replace EVAP Purge Solenoid ticking noise
Buick Encore replace EVAP Purge Solenoid ticking noise

Just some advice folks, don't just load up the parts cannon on this type of issue. You have to do diag, and perform the wiring harness test I go over in the video. The GM Ecotec 1.4L has a *normal* ticking sound simply due to its fuel injector design. What you're looking for is an _additional_ abnormal sound, in this videos case, specifically from a failing purge solenoid assembly. If you do not get the results shown in the video, your sound source is elsewhere. These solenoids are not whisper quiet to begin with, but they are also not supposed to be audible from a distance while the engine is idling either. That's what this repair vid is about addressing.

I did the test like you and the noise stopped so I put a new part in and it makes the same noise. It is loud and like I said stopped when I disconnected the power. So why would it still make this noise?
@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
Tough to say, as you can read thru the comments for the vast majority of us this is what to do to repair this noise issue. If you can hear the noise inside the car with the doors closed and the windows up, only then is this a problem. It's _normal_ for this GM engine to make a ticking noise you can hear with the hood up. What you're listening for is not no noise, but _less_ noise. I can suggest two considerations if you still have the _hear it inside the car_ problem: Did you use a genuine GM ACDelco part? Aftermarket ones are typically of inferior quality and construction. Is there a check engine light, or a stored history diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the computers memory? The noise may be related to another component in the same EVAP system.

No. That is the effect of over pressurization. That is not the cause. You have a bad timing chain tensioner. The timeing is off just so slightly that it causes back pressure. It will just break again until you tear apart the front of the engine and replace the time chain tensioner. 1:37

I'm working on a 2002 Buick LeSabre 3.8L and the problem I'm having is with the purge solenoid. My long term fuel trim is pegged out at -25% and my short term is around -5%. The solenoid is ticking meaning it's being energized. When I disconnect it the long term fuel trim goes back to 0. With the connector unplugged I connected a test light to battery power and the other end to the negative terminal. My test light pulsates continuously. The ground is controlled by the ECU. Does that mean the ECU has a bad driver or can a faulty fuel pressure sensor cause the computer to continuously run the Evap integrity test? I haven't checked the fuel pressure sensor voltage yet but I will once I jack up the car. Please Help!

Aftermarket parts tend to have this problem the most, vs using a genuine GM ACDelco part. In the beginning, it's just cosmetic - an annoying noise. But in the long run, the noisy part will fail and trigger a check engine light on the dash.

@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
That code is unlikely to be related to the purge solenoid, it's more likely coming from the intake manifold pcv bypass valve or a vacuum line in that component area. More diagnosis would be required to confirm, too many possibilities for a comment forum diag. You could check for th pcv bypass with this check though - ru-vid.comqGBt5skZWLI

Can this cause a startup problem due to excessive negative tank pressure ? I'm definetly getting the noise and the vehicle acted like it was starving for gas at startup(it would run for a few seconds and then die). Thanks for the video.
@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
Usually what happens here is, if you ignore the noise and do not replace it proactively, the solenoid eventually fails enough where you get a check engine lamp on the dash lit with a code you can pull with a scan tool. This part completely failing can cause the start symptoms you describe, but you may have multiple failures going on. I'd start with pulling the codes with a scan tool (not all of them will trigger the check engine lamp), and work that list first.

Post a time index from the vid to be sure, but I _think_ what you are referring to is just a safety lock on the electrical harness connector. It's a small piece of plastic that helps make sure that the electrical connector does not accidentally get depressed and come loose. If so, its not a big deal. You could procure one at some point from a wreck at a you pull your own parts type salvage yard. Like an LKQ PYP site. If instead you mean the retainer for the vacuum line that connects into the solenoid, well if that broke you may have to replace that whole plastic line or the line won't stay connected.

@DrShock
@DrShock Год назад
Thanks. No, this noise problem causes no damage if ignored. Eventually the solenoid will fail to operate properly and cause a check engine light in the instrument cluster to come on. The solenoid is part of the emissions system, to reduce pollution of the air we all breath. Once the check engine light is on, it is a repair that you will have to do at that point to pass state inspection, if your state checks the vehicle for emissions compliance.

Nah, not on this GM engine. Only emissions. Of course if the vacuum hoses going into and out of this part are damaged/open, that could lead to driveability issues but that's unrelated to the EVAP solenoid function itself.

So with the EVAP solenoid assembly removed a 3:31, the connector at the intake manifold that the assembly snaps onto is in the right hand view. That connection is part of the plastic engine intake manifold. Everything removed is all one unit, if using genuine GM parts. If yours has something missing or different about that assembly itself, it could be an aftermarket design or damaged in some way.

There are at least eight different possible causes for that code on the ecotec 1.4L, but the evap solenoid is not one of them. More likely a vacuum hose leak, or an obstruction/leak in the crankcase ventilation flow.

@DrShock
@DrShock 2 года назад
The overall sound would yes. But different engines can have different sounds for both normal and abnormal, especially across manufacturers. So I wouldn't compare a GM engine to a Nissan engine alone, for this sort of problem. The GM Ecotec 1.4L, for example, has a perfectly normal ticking to it. That's kinda unusual to begin with engine sounds wise. It's only when you have this added noise with the purge solenoid failing that we cover in this vid, that you get an additional clue about something truly amiss. Most folks would never notice it, until the check engine light came on further down the calendar.

This particular GM engine has a _normal_ ticking to it. When the purge solenoid ages it adds to the melody. The unplug/plug test I showed in the video is how you determine if you have an _abnormal_ ticking noise issue relating to the purge solenoid. The solenoid obviously makes _some_ sound when it's functioning, but as it ages the sound becomes much louder, pending a failure. If during the unplug test you are still hearing what you're commenting on, it's not related to the purge solenoid. It could be _normal_ or something else, like an exhaust manifold leak (that also makes a _ticca ticca ticca_ sound. Or an internal engine component from low oil, wear etc. Many things.

@@MatallicA35dozer It won't _harm_ anything per say. You'll eventually get a check engine light and in some states you can't pass inspection with that condition. And depending on how the unit eventually fails, it can fail in a state making for hard starting conditions. But it won't damage anything, you just need to get it fixed when the time comes. Most folks don't even notice the sound, and only realize there's a problem when the check engine light pops and they get the code.

@DrShock

This part would be one of the _least_ likely to be involved with a misfire condition. Diagnosing a misfire can take some time as there can be many many causes for such an engine problem. Definitely not a parts cannon fired into the dark candidate, can get expensive real fast just throwing parts at it. Start with the diagnostic codes being recorded for the misfire, and run thru the troubleshooting associated with each code stored in the engine computer.

You should expect an ACDelco OEM unit to go for many years. Remember there is supposed to be _some_ sound, it's a solenoid afterall. It's just when the sound becomes excessively noticeable with the hood closed that you can proactively address it.

@@DrShockIf it works, I don't replace it. They are loud inherent to their design. Most companies surround them with rubber along with the rubber mounting them to the metal bracket. Helps to bring the noise down. Placement of this valve also makes a difference. A lot of them are under the intake or somewhere tucked away. The Cruze is an econo box, so they cheeped out on the purge valve.

@DrShock 2 года назад
The before/after test I show is to help determine if _this_ is what you're hearing. The part is not silent, even when operating correctly. But you shouldn't be able to hear the genuine GM/ACdelco solenoid with the hood closed when operating normally. There's a basket of other things that can cause a ticking (besides the fact this particular GM engine has a _normal_ ticking to it to begin with). Exhaust manifold leaks or lifters are other possible _tickers_ that can be heard over the engine noise.

Just ran out of time with the cars owner needing it back, as mentioned at 4:55. It's a pretty cut and dry diagnosis here as shown with the harness disconnect/reconnect test. Just remember that there's always ticking with an Ecotec 1.4L. And there is some sound that _normally_ comes from an operating purge solenoid. It's just a question of _abnormal_ ticking that you might notice that was *not* there before. There are several sources for such new sounds, this is only _one_ of the possibilities.

When you did the unplug/plug electrical test I showed, before replacing the part, did the sound change? That's an important diagnostic confirmation step, because there are other things that can sound similar. So you have to confirm the purge solenoid is the source of the sound, or at least one of the sounds, before you change the part. Like I mentioned in this video, we had actually had two failures to remedy before we got rid of all the ticking. This is one of them though.

Like with some of the earlier comments, those new to the Sonic and GM's Ecotec 1.4L turbo may not be used to the ticking sound it makes _normally_ by design. You have to go thru the diagnosis I do in the video to see if what you have is an _additional_ ticking noise caused by this solenoid on its way out. A failing solenoid would not be covered by warranty usually anyway, as this is a wear item like a brake pad. They are relatively inexpensive, and easy to replace yourself if proven to have been the source. Only use genuine GM/ACDelco though (part info in the description), the aftermarket import parts will fail very quickly.

GM engines can each have their own unique acoustic signatures, but it will have a similar design. The EVAP purge solenoid for the 1.5L looks very similar to the one I'm showing for this 1.4L. You might give it the same simple electrical harness disconnect and se if the noise changes. Always familiarize yourself with how the connector unlocks and disconnects with the engine off, before trying such a test to avoid damaging any parts or connectors.

@@BruceLayR8 The temperature of the part under the hood, rather than what the outside weather is, may affect the sound. The ticking may not be as noticeable until things warm up, for example. But once it starts making the noise, it should be fairly reproducible from there on out.

They are not totally _silent_ when operating, but should not be loud enough for you to notice with the hood closed. At least the genuine GM / ACDelco ones are like that.
