( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2013 Audi S8 is powered by a 4.0-liter V-8 force-fed by not one but two turbochargers. This engine is a little monster and produces 520 hp versus the previous model's 450 and get this it puts out a tire scorching torque: 479 lb-ft of torque. Nathan recently had the chance to drive this new flagship Audi in the hills above Los Angeles and he came away more than impressed by the Audi's sheer power and handling. Check out this first drive review as Nathan spends some time behind the wheel of the new 2013 Audi S8.

What's the logic of a 0-60 test with instrumentation, and the result is a gut number for a 'lousy start'? Couldn't repeat it again and do it right? Keep to reviewing minivans, will ya...

From watching other videos it seems the sub-4 second times are good (even quite reproducible), but HP and torque ratings from Audi are actually very much underestimated.

Paul, here's an interesting question for you. What's one of the most populated metropolitan areas in the world? The answer...in case you are wondering is Mexico City. Over 20 million people live in or near Mexico City. Now just for fun why not google at what elevations all these millions of people live work and drive cars at? You might be surprised to find that not everyone lives at sea level.

they are 5,000 feet above sea level...that does tend to steal power...and they do a rolling start, just as you would use in the real world..

I did the 0 to 60 mph on PCH - but I could not film it from the outside (it was hard enough to film from the inside). The edited clip is a tad off.

This car is a BOSS!!! Ultra luxury & sporty performance with style!! Not bad for a 4 ton car that can do 0-60 in 4 seconds. One of my fav euro full size luxury car!!

At first, like a lot of other people, I was put off by the real-world 0-60's, but I've grown to really appreciate it now. I feel bad about brake-torqueing or clutch-dropping my cars anyway.

He is at altitude! The air is much thinner there and that makes the car slower.

You're probably right - 4.6 is incredible for such a large luxury motor. I can't afford one unfortunately - I'll have to put up with the lexus. I'm surprised you have a BMW logo for you profile and yet you're avidly reading about an Audi - looks like you're looking to change to a premium brand rather than stick with the repmobile - good on you!

I personally don't think this engine is better than AMG's 5.5 biturbo which produces a peak power of 563 bhp and 664 lb/ft of torque. This Audi is fast only because of it's amazing Quattro system. When comparing the refinement of an S63 and and S8, I would take the Mercedes.

Lots of Audi fanboys posting around here.... just because Car and Driver gets paid to give the Audi a 3.5 0-60 time doesn't mean every other reviewer will. This is the realistic timing 0-60.

And just what evidence do you have to support that? They dynoed the motor and found that it produced 575 hp instead of the advertised 520. That being the case, 3.5/11.8 would make perfect sense with awd.

The Audi s8 does not have launch control. The best you can do off the line is brake torque take off. Left foot on brake and right foot fully depressing accelerator then releasing the brake. I do agree with you though, 4.6?

You guys need stop doing 0-60 test 1 mile above sea level. I hardly can find any review that you aren't testing those cars in high mountains. That's why you end up thinking large super fast sedan isn't good. Because it's not supposed to be good on a narrow mountain roads 1 mile above the sea level. This madness needs to stop.

i was lucky enough to drive both of them, they are not too rare here in germany. to me the 7series clearly is the better car. if you have a different opinion that´s fine, both are great.

Unreliable? I know of an Audi 90 which has done more than 700k km. Yes it is on its 7th cam belt, but still driving fine with only a loss of 10hp over 18 years. This is not uncommon with well maintained Audi's. You say overpriced, I say quality (materials) come at a price. If you're fine with a cheap hard plastic dash: that is your prerogative. The insurance is expensive because they use superior materials which cost a lot when needing replacement.

...maybe you should do two seconds worth of research. Both Audi and Chrysler use the same ZF 8speed transmission on the A8 and 300. Even the shifter looks similar.

Those times have actually been duplicated a few times on the road, and estimated on dynoes. Audi over-delivers on their HP ratings.

hey BMW 760Li and 5-series GT. The new Rolls-Royce Ghost, Bentley Mulsanne, and Audi A8 and the charger and 300c all have the same transmission THE ZF 8-speed.

hey man. as americans we get a good deal on all Audis and other euro cars. Luckily we dont have to pay ridiculous taxes like they do in Europe. i was in poland and i saw they were selling a6's with tiny diesel engines for over a hundred grand!!!! we get s8's and rs4's for that kind of money.

yea you are dead wwrong in your last portion. Ford is doing better now then they ever were with 2005 being there best year in sales (until this year) please get your facts correct, saves alot of time for you in the long run. look at all there models - best mustang ford has ever seen to date. ford focus/fiesta are leading in there class for sales - explorer went up in sales almost 4% over last month

You can probably get this time in perfect conditions, with multiple runs, on a drag strip with a sticky surface, with only 1 gallon of gas in the car, and a 120 pound driver....but never ever in the real world.
