I am so grateful for this post. I was distraught my car was starting maybe 2 days and then it wouldn't start. I took it to the dealership that I bought the car from and they told me unless a problem shows as a code they could not fix anything and my car was on warranty. . Thank God it was also on their Service Bulletin it is being fixed now I had the car towed 3 times I was at my wits end.
Approximately 1month ago the inhibitor switch was replaced on my 2011 Elantra for the very same problem. Worked without issue until about 1 week ago. Now doing the same thing. Took it back to the dealer today and it was a waste of time. They couldn’t duplicate the problem. I was on my way to the dealer this morning for the service check and it took me 9 tries to get the car started. I almost wish I had asked AAA to tow it to the dealer. Guess I live with it but will try this as a solution. Thanks for posting the video.
Sitting in my car with the exact same issue and started messing with the gear and it started working! Thanks man, life saver. Thought it was the starter
I just had the same problem, it won’t start on P but when I moved it to N it started, now when I move it back to P it starts fine 🤷♂️, hope this helps someone
Ha! I did wiggled the shift gear and start pulling out my keys and then putting them in all the way to start point. Should do this like 3 times. Saw the "p" sign like he said. I pulled out and put in again all the way to start point until it started. Thanks to this video! Will go to the dealership tomorrow
I had this happen to my 2011 Elantra Limited. I was just under 100k miles and was told it was not covered by the 100k, 10 year warranty. When I asked for a quote the wanted over $100 to diagnose the problem. I told them I knew it was what I called a "neutral safety switch" or some switch that told the computer the car was in park. Since it was not covered by warranty, I specifically told them to replace that switch. Parts and labor cost me under $200.
Thanks so much for posting this. I had exact same problem and the dealership told me it was the battery. I told them about this video and they replaced inhibitor switch. Sadly they could not figure that out.

I had my 2011 Elantra inhibitor switch replaced at about 32k km in Mar 2013. But it happened again today 01 May 16! Apparently the problem was not solved but a temp fix!!
Had the same problem. 2014 Elantra. Dealer first replaced starter. Then I got stuck in a parking lot. Could not get it started at all. Towed to Hyundai. This time they replaced battery. Some time went by, then I got stranded again. Towed once again to Hyundai. This time they replaced the switch inhibitor. That was covered under warranty. What's fked up is, when they replaced the battery, I was on the hook for that $94.00.......when that was not the problem. Pissed off I'am.
They did the same thing to me even when I showed them this video,and my own. Still have not gotten them to replace inhibitor switch. I still have the problem today

Just had this happen on my 2012 elantra. After getting it started (with AAA tow in sight!) Drove to the dealer and he mentioned this. Symptoms exactly! , I have had previous starting problems, but don't recall what the Gear indicator was showing. Those times; I did NOT mess with the gear shift.
My car is brand new. Just one year old now. And this issue started three weeks ago. Did they charge you anything at all for it even though it is covered??
dude.....this just happened to me today. except NOTHING would come on. I was about to call up 3A and hand over my light bill money....cause I was an hour away from home. but I sat a good 15 minutes and waited. tried a 5th time and it cranked right on up.
Mya Doll Mine showed it was in Park too when it wouldn't start. But, I did exactly what this video said to do (even though it already showed it was in Park) and my car started right up after not being able to start it throughout a 6 hr time frame today.
lovetotrav what the hell is going on with these cars man? It’s ridiculous that my battery, starter and alternator are all in good condition (they’ve been tested) and I’m having off and on issues with my Hyundai starting I don’t get it :(
ive been having this problem. i change the inhibitor switch a yaer ago car was working. 2 months ago got into an accident. today it happened again car wont crank.battery is new . do you think the switch is bad after the accident?
My 2009 Elantra is having the same issue. It's either the ignition or neutral safety switch. Can't figure it out. I replaced the alternator and my care moves fast again but the car is not starting unless I turn the key in ignition 3 or so times.
I am having the exact issue got the starter replaced ( $400) problem still exists. This is critical failure what you cannot start car middle of snow storm ? you would think Hyundai would issue recall urgently . I never had issues like this with any of my Honda cars . The starter I can understand will fail but neutral safety switch? My mechanic who has been business long time told me he used to see this type of issues 15 years ago and never has seen this issue on any toyota / Honda. he said the part is low quality cheap
Exact same problem as mine...I told them this the first time and they just didn't listen to me and changed a recall on the starter clip and checked the grounds...a month later it was as bad as yours and I recorded it showed them and it did the same thing at the shop...and they said what I said the first time...replaced the inhibitor. Hopefully this is the end of that.
Had identical problem, although I have push button start so I had even fewer lights. I also had a problem where when the car was running, and put in park, it sometimes had a hard clunk in the transmission, followed by the screen going blank and unable to shift out of park...which eventually threw a CEL. Dealer diagnosed the CEL as Code P0705 - Trans Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Their flow chart went: "check wiring, Use GDS - found trans range switch no reading what gear is selected. Internal failure in trans range switch. Replaced inhibitor switch assembly". Part number is 42700-26700. Was replaced under warranty, but I would have done it myself if it wasn't...not a hard part to get to or replace and about $30.
I had this replaced and also the starter and problem still exists. Took it to dealer they say no codes cannot determine issue. Just heads up before getting this work done
I've had this problem for the first time since this past Wednesday on/off with my 2012 Elantra Limited push button start on/off not starting however after reading this posting and others it could be a "range switch" inhibitor switch or shift interlock. I pressed the start/stop button all the way in it could be a possible start/stop button replacement issue or loose connection. After I started it a few times I have not had in issue. Wait and see what tomorrow brings.
I had the same problem on my 2014 Elantra GT. Unfortunately it wasn't covered by my warranty since I was over on milage. Now the car won't start again and I suspect the starter has now died. I've never had this many problems with a car before.
This happened and I called AAA for a jump start. I'm on original 5 yr old battery and was about to buy a battery. The car started with a jump so maybe the jump bypassed the inhibitor switch or the signal to the computer? Also, while the key was in the ignition the door/seatbelt alarm would not turn off and when I took the key out the alarm was still on and then finally quit. The AAA guy was trying to check the battery when this was happening. I'm not an electrical systems auto mechanic and don't know why this would happen so before I dump money into it does anyone have any idea before I take it in to the dealer?
Same problem was with me last night....Then I just leave it for the entire night in park.....Then I started in the morning and it started right way....Best way is to leave it for some time...
