Part 2 of the 2013 Mazda 3, original code was P0456 (very small leak), after finding and replacing a bad "gas tank breather hose" I assumed that was the only leak because of the description of being a "very small leak". some simple tests to diagnose the system for a leak and to prove out the final repair. Lesson learned... Don't assume, varify!

Cool video! I have the same code. My mechanic thinks it's the purge valve and just wants to replace it. Is the vent valve you mention the same as the purge valve?

No, purge valve is under the hood, mounted to the engine

@@madmike214 Thanks! And by bad valve you meant the vapor canister purge solenoid valve was bad right?

No the canister VENT valve was bad in this situation not the purge

If they don't have a smoke machine he can use the second method I used to identify a leak using the scan tool and grounding the solenoid control circuit to manually shut the vent valve, just be sure to block off the purge valve hose as I did in the video

What causes this vent valve to leak?

Hard to say without knowing the complete vehicle history, the environment and what the life cycle of the part is... We're in the rust belt so any number of things could cause it to fail... Could have been simply it's life cycle was over

Possible, really know way to know on this vehicle, the owner recently purchased so no service history available
