Just purchased my dream car. I had my heart set on a 911 but all things considered I went with a 2014 Cayman S and I couldn't be happier. Absolutely LOVE IT!
Me too! Got mine last August. Love it. Basically GTS spec with manual. Just washed the bugs off it after hoofing it through epic roads in Sonoma and Mendocino Counties yesterday. Bliss.
Just drove a 718 gt4 yesterday and I can’t believe a machine like this stays so planted on the road even when you try hard to break it loose, it’s like a magnet on the road no matter how tight the turn is, keep moving! Well done Porsche, I see why everyone needs one in their life
Facts. The 718 is an amazing machine. Just got out of the mountains with about 20 911s and 718s. The 718s ate those roads up and never broke traction. And stayed completely flat.
I’ve got a 987s ... I went to Silverstone and one of the Porsche guys took me on a couple of laps with him driving.. it was unbelievable, I had no idea what the car was capable of until a proper driver drove it... What a car.. manual ..
calling the cayman a coxster is the most ignorant comment ever. Less weight, more power, stiffer suspension, completly different car. Agree with you all the way matey
Chris Harris does an awesome job driving cars to their limit. If you love the exterior styling of the Porsche Cayman, listen to the man who designed it in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yyc1UsnDqYU.html
Whilst I respect Chris Harris, I find him dull as a person. When Clarkson is on point and focusing on delivering solid content, there’s no one better.... There’s no way Chris could deliver that Rally history piece as well as Clarkson did on the Grand Tour. No way.
Abram Koucheki - they're not expensive used. Bought mine 6 years ago for $32k but now you can get them for $25. Maybe even $20k. Very inexpensive. Get yourself one!
I really wanted to buy a Corvette and walked into not one, but three dealerships. In one of them I was quite literally shown a Camaro and then shown the door. On another I was allowed to look at a brochure, at the salesmans desk. I walked into a Porsche dealership with two weeks of beard, old jeans and a t-shirt and drove half a dozen cars. Bought one. It was so easy and the service has been great. GM just does not have the infrastructure to sell or service their awesome Corvette. Sad but true.
Recently I was browsing around a Porsche dealership in a dreamstate where I saw 5 Caymans in 5 different colours. The 3 that stood out the most to me were the Sapphire Blue, Agate Grey and Rhodium Silver, with light Pebble Grey interiors. Out of those 3 it would be between the Sapphire Blue and Rhodium Silver which both show the Cayman's lines really well without being too in yer face, but they're way too expensive. A new, (almost fully loaded), Cayman is £65-£70K ($109-$117K.) Lovely looking car though, and if I was in the market for a small 2 seater sportscar it would be a very tough choice between the Cayman S and the Jaguar F Type Coupe, which is as equally gorgeous in the metal.
Honestly, I was never a big Porsche fan, but I rented a standard Boxster with manual transmission (mainly because it was the only sporty car to rent nearby) for a weekend and I my only complain was indeed the steering feel. It was precise and everything but somehow the steering in my good old 323i feels more alive. Yes, I would love to buy something more hardcore one day, but then I probably wouldn't want to take a car like an Elise on a long trip to the alps, where I had to use motorways and drive in bad weather conditions. So, as I favour coupés over convertibles, I really can't think of anything that would compare to a Cayman on the current market. Especially since the looks are just right.
This is the best car that Porsche have ever built. Period. Not the fastest, most expensive or greatest revered. But undoubtedly the best pure drivers car they've ever made IMHO. A great video, well shot, and excellent driving skills. Thank you for posting it.
@@cayman9815 For various reasons I've sold the car so I can't talk about long-term reliability. What I can say with certainty though, is that it's an absolute joy to drive and the 6 cylinder engine sits real close to you while driving and sounds glorious.
It's a really great car, all the sportscar you will ever need. I especially like how you can sense the frontend compressing and griping through the steering. It's so great.
Almost exact car (2014) arriving in a week, my 6th Porsche. I believe this will be my all time favorite. Same color, PDK, and higher spec, 13K miles. What a superb video and drive. CH is a monster, thanks for confirming my choice.
I've never been a huge Porsche fan but this car looks great and it's the first Porsche I've heard that actually sounds good as well. Great review on the car, one day I hope you and Matt take over Top Gear. Keep up the fantastic work.
I'm going to watch this later... Almost bought a 911 today, but can't afford a good one yet. Had to go for an e30 M3 instead... #firstworldproblems! Used to hate Porsche until I watched your vids, Chris... this is really working!
Have to agree. Been looking at the options aswell. The f type V6 S sounds lovely but it's just too heavy. GTR.. Mehh... Will hopefully switch to this in 2018 :)
SmeekPeek the F-type is a nice car but it's just not a car you buy if you want that pure driving feel and balance, it's nice and comfortable, has a lot of power, and it sounds and looks Fucking amazing.
Justin Walters wow it's been a year since I posted on here! As my picture suggests I have gone with an Audi R8 v8 and may I add it is a fantastic car with a tubi exhaust (epic) and manual gear box. The f type quickly lost ground on its competition in my eyes for reasons you mentioned. I wanted something a bit more driver focused. I decided against the Cayman s as I really wanted the gts (gt4 would be nice :D) which was out of my price range. I also couldn't deny a nice big NA V8 before I possibly join the forced induction crew (997 turbo manual transmission).
Chris as always a pleasure to watch. this Cayman s along with the GT4 will be the last NA 6 cylinder of their breed. from now on it's all 4 turbo charged.
Yup,the way the car looks. I went to a porsche dealer intending to swap my Elise for a gen 2 cayman. The money didn't add up so I decided to sell the Elise to put down on a mortgage. Anyhow I'm digressing, I saw the new cayman in the flesh and omg what a gorgeous looking car. In a couple of year time after I've been hiring cars every now and then I'll have the mortgage sorted and will be buying one of these once they start to come down in price. Gorgeous. Amazing.
No. I was kicked out of my last job in the middle east and have been unemployed for 4 months. I have a 2008 cooper S with JCW kit fitted. I went from a SLK350 to new elise to 2008 TTS and now the mini. The mini in most respects is the better car. cheap to run, practical, and relatively fast. I dont think I would have got the Porsche anyway. Its a car for £100k per year plus salary poseurs. A gorgeous looking car. That doesnt warrant its price tag. If money were no object yeah sure the car is a beaut. If you dont mind burning cash that is.....if I end up in a decent paid job then ill be looking at 350Z NISMO
ashley styles glad things still worked and u still have a pretty nice performance car and to be honest I would prefer a mini cooper JCW GP edition to this Porsche, even though it is a really cool car.
Had my Cayman s 981 for 3 yrs now and it provides so much fun. Had the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km 3.89sec.....torque available from 3000rpm, razor-sharp throttle response all add up to an exhilarating driving experience.
@@gb6281 It was done via a Cobb Accessport where a local race tuner installed their own software onto the COBB. Tweaks to the torque load tables bring it to 420Nm on the dyno. Also the limit for the 981 PDK... A great result for under AU$2000.00.
I really like how Chris explaines and tells everything he sees, feels and experiences! 99,9% of the carjournalists just ready the brochure out loud... About the Porsche: great car, and i am glad that the cayman isn't just for hairdressers anymore
fast forward 6 years, and I'd love to see you, Chris, with the BRZ on this track. I know you did a track day with the car 6 years ago, but times have changed and the car is different. same could be said for the Cayman/Boxster. Sadly, the 370Z is unchanged after 10 years in production. cheers.
Let's be honest, most people won't ever see the ring. For everyday grins and enjoyment, I don't think anything could match the 6 banger. And let's be honest, that's more than anybody could wish for.
@@milchomarkov8158 Very true. But one can restore the lost horses Porsche stole from the 981 s engine. For A$1900 I remapped the ecu to 364hp, 420Nm 0-100km /h in 3.89sec.... hair trigger throttle response which pulls like the clappers from 3500rpm to redline. I now drive a beast of a Cayman s with the glorious NA engine wail. Best mod Porsche never offered! All with stock air filter and exhaust manifolds.
Loving this Cayman a lot, Porsche did a bang up job keep it up and the Cayman will drive the obsolete 911 extinct (Porsche is terrified of this reality but as long as the Cayman exists they know one day this reality will come to fruition), The Majority of Young and new generation buyers will not buy the 911 for its heritage or really care about its heritage or classic look, They will simply to buy the Porsche that looks and drives the best That car is the Cayman.
@@stu4181 Not going to argue the point as a Boxster S owner but there is a market for the more GT oriented 911 and it does have a back seat to store a few more easy to grab essentials while touring or commuting. Maybe even a pup or two. I see a market for both cars and not a pissing match between them. Porsche never wanted these cars to compete with each other. They were kind enough to build them both for us to enjoy. I'm looking to get a Cayman S because I just like the way they look. But I love the top down experience in the Boxster. I think that is the hardest decision for me.
GS Riders of Velocity Cycles. Yes re reading my comment it was a bit more flippant than my usual ones. I honestly believe Porsche has held the cayman/boxster back for years as it knows it’s the better sports car. The 911 ok is a better GT but surely there are better options for a GT car either a panamera so you have some useable rear seats or another manufacturer maybe an m5 if you can stomach the depreciation. ( a member of the car club I’m in reported getting a 6 month old m5 comp 3k miles on it for 60k which seems great value for that much car compared to a 911 c4 ? Understand the boxster vs cayman dilemma I had it recently myself, the ease of cleaning a hard top and the slightly sharper chassis won out for me. I have just come out of an original z4 though so had done the soft top thing recently. So That could be a factor.... A friend taking me out through tunnels in a 981 GTS cayman got me into Porsche’s in the first place!
great stuff u tested that Porsche in that Portimao track, glad someone is using it.... I am from that region....that track is always empty....and the only thing using the tarmac is the sun...hope u like portuguese hospitality great vid.
I have to say your right.. I drove my 350Z HR to Sonoma race way to drive the new Cayman and Cayman S on the track (as well as some 911's) and I have to say, I left amazed how well the Cayman S handled and performed. It drives like it's nailed down in the corners. Anyone who drove the new Cayman S would agree that it's an amazing car. Even though I love my Z, the Porsche felt a step above, in every way..
I feel as though the M2's interior is lacking considering it's a 2016 car. The M3 and Cayman's interiors are far nicer. I would say though that everybody I've spoken to that has an M2, says it's unbelievable and more fun than the M3!
Nick Rugh My dog loves laying down on the engine deck...he gets to stick his head out of the window without having to maintain his balance while standing up!
nice video. I'm surprised they let you go without a helmet. love the interior. I have a 16v scirocco, 88 e30 M3, 71 Alfa gtv, v70r, and my 07 cayman S is the best car I ever owned
Awesome review, great driving, perfect color! And I just slightly prefer the ability to lower the roof and hear the flat-6 music echo off the mountains in the twisties ;)
How close is the (1st gen) 986 Boxster's driving experience/feel/handling to this new Cayman? Because there is this slight chance that I can afford one soon... just what percentage of the sharpness, responsiveness and balance of this cayman might I get in the original boxster?
My dad bought one two years used with 10k miles for $50k. With a PDK it's as accelerative and quick through corners as you could possibly want. It's a bargain for the performance and the enjoyment
Man! If I could afford a Porsche a Cayman will be my first option. Also, tip my cap to drive for the great video editing and camera angles. Amazing is an understatement.
Great vid of the cayman. Halfway trough the vid I started to see very familiar roads and I went like.. Could it be that Chris Harris was in Portugal in specific Algarve.. Then pissed me of because he was there and could've seen the Porsche joining around.
