THANK YOU GM for NOT putting a turbo in the Z28. I could have lived with a supercharger but I am SICK of the turbo lovers. People fail to understand how amazing a naturally aspirated engine is. Turbos get hot and break down over time. Not to mention the bank draining you will experience if you were to blow a turbo. Give me a NA Engine any day. 500HP is plenty for me :)

matthew clouser on top of what he said, its a Camaro. Its no fancy car, and give me a list of what they changed on the GTR since 2007 performance wise. They did jack shit. The car is amazing, but it was versing a Camaro. The Camaro is not even in its class and it keeps up with car triple the price. People like you dont get the fact that it is a heavy car and its a Camaro. Not enough respect in the world for a car costing 75k that can keep up with supercars

Nice car.. I have a funny feeling Ford has something up their sleeves with the new Mustang and they are keeping it hush hush as much as possible.. But thats my opinion.. But either way I like both vehicles. Now if Dodge can do something with the Challenger and stop making it a straight line car then all 3 would be nice to see on a track.
@ChuiStrong

Whatever it is, it's not a Boss 302. Ford tends to keep their limited production cars, well, limited. Maybe an SVT Cobra? If not, hopefully a Mach 1. Not sure if Ford can pull off 500hp with their 5.0L without force induction, but if they do...Bravo. Given the Ford and Chevy rivalry, I think Ford will give Chevy a run for its money.

My (swiss) opinion; That's the best American legend that was ever built in United Stat...... , sorry, in Canada (Sad,what's happend America?)! A real extraordinary one! Prepared to be a great classic car in future (motorsport historie/ small edition/ splendid technical parts/ very good manufacturing). The Z28 has every detail which I would have in a car for daily, for cruising with my lovely wife, to drive fast over mountain roads and to go for Germanys Nürburgring! I was driving my powerful EVO IX the last 9 years and I love my EVO really hardly but suddenly there comes a car which could change my 4x4 relationship. I just can tell: "Thank you GM, and especially thanks to Canada (good work), that car is amazing!!!" Many greetings from Switzerland :)))

@kara88bg 10 лет назад
Wouldn't a smaller engine, like 4, or 4.2 L V8 possibly turbo charged or normally aspirated but with more HP make more sense for a track car, it would be much lighter and lower?
@anthony6151
@anthony6151 10 лет назад
Naturally aspirated is better for throttle response, which is what most track drivers prefer. The short answer to your question is that they're not going to spend the money on R&D to build a completely new engine for a car that has a limited production run. They chose to expand on the LS7 because it has a proven race pedigree in the ALMS and is one of GM's best performance engines. It's relatively light as well, especially considering how powerful it is. If you want the long answer, here's the link where I got my information from: www.camarohomepage.com/ls7/ It's long, and I skimmed through a good amount, but hopefully I was able to answer your question. I wouldn't be surprised to see a smaller displacement, turbocharged engine as a replacement for the next generation.
@kara88bg
@kara88bg 10 лет назад
anthony6151 Thanks for your answer, I always look at performance cars from European stand point where ramming the most power in smallest engine is usually the way manufacturers go.
@wrexicate
@wrexicate 10 лет назад
While a 7.0L V8 sounds big and heavy, the LS7 ( like all ls engines ) is actually very light and compact. Some people consider pushrod engines to be low tech, and GM receives some criticism for continuing to make pushrod engines; but it is not well deserved. A pushrod V8 has a lower center of gravity than a DOHC V8 due to having a single camshaft in the block vs. 4 camshafts on top of the cylinder heads. This also means the cylinder heads are much smaller, which again saves weight and make the physical size of the engine smaller, which makes it more versatile for multiple applications. For example: Compared to Gm's 3.6L V6, the LS engine is actually a little skinnier, but also a little longer, there really isn't much of a size difference. Also, pushrod engines also have as many as 150 less parts, which means less rotational mass, which equates to better efficiency, and makes it less expensive to produce.
@ihatecrackhead
@ihatecrackhead 10 лет назад
wrexicate LS3 weighs 400lbs and is smaller than a 5.0L Ford weighing 444lbs You can swap in a LS3 Hotcam and make 525hp, but without heat soak like a boosted engine. Low end torque with a huge powerband is good too
@kara88bg
@kara88bg 10 лет назад
chewbaccathedog Bro you just answered pretty much every car engine volume/power related question I could ever think of. I thought that point of smaller displacement engines was that they have less spinning and moving mass inside them, and that bigger bore but shorter stroke combined with higher RPM could replace engines with bigger displacements. Newer actually thought about their outer dimensions. Thanks for your reply, it was very informative.

@stigmsr1

I'm sure it's a blast to drive if they fixed the blind spots from the SS. For a track day car I wish they'd give you a deduction for non-carbon (aftermarket) brakes. If you did track that car replacing the carbon discs will really add up quick. It would also most likely be cheaper to replace the stock tires with dedicated track slicks. Sure you'd add a little more of the dreaded unsprung weight but you'd have a more affordable track day car.
@MrMikeDao
@MrMikeDao 10 лет назад
Then again, if you can afford a 75k car then replacing the brakes and tires won't be that big of a deal.
@stigmsr1
@stigmsr1 10 лет назад
If you can afford $75K for a track car there are much better options with cheaper wear items which equals more track time. Most people have no idea how expensive carbon brakes are especially if you track the car. My point is GM is marketing it as a track car but its really going to be a collector car.
@MrMikeDao
@MrMikeDao 10 лет назад
You forget those who already occasionally track and for 75k it's not a bad bargain compared to super cars.
@mak450
@mak450 10 лет назад
Stig Msr Seems to me like cheaper wear items equals wear items that wear faster, which definitely doesn't mean more track time unless you're gonna run out to the local pep boys for parts for your serious track car. Sounds like an awful idea to me, but what do I know. They're marketing it as a track car because it *_is_* a track car. GM can't control what owners do with the cars they spend their money on, and not using something for its intended purpose doesn't change that purpose.
@stigmsr1
@stigmsr1 10 лет назад
There's a reason only the top tier race disciplines use carbon brakes. Depending on the track they still wear out like any other brake disc. They dissipate heat better so they are less likely to fade. If they went with AP Racing or Brembo racing brakes not that weak stuff most car manufactures put on for the name Brembo. Most track days seasons last about 20+/- min. its cool to say you have carbon brakes until you have to replace carbon brakes. Even the brake package from the standard C6 Z06 would be good for the car.

The z28 is already upgraded to the point where any cash you spent on it would achieve minimum performance improvements. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely respect Chevy for taking a 4000lb boat and making it this fast on a race track, even if it only beat the GTR in the hands of a pro driver. Still for the overwhelming majority of Z28 owners, beating the GTR on track will be hard to do. And with regards to the GT3 - there is more to a car than specs and lap times. The Porsche is much more expensive, and honestly, I think you get what you pay for. The Z28 is a great track car and…that’s it. You’ll HATE driving this thing every day on the road. The GT3 on the other hand has equal (or better, in the hands of most drivers) track performance and it’s a great road car as well. For me, the Porsche refinement can’t be beaten.

Robert you have no understanding or appreciation for good American muscle. The car was designed to beat any GTR or Mustang on a road track, which it does easily. I own one along with a 2011 ZR1 and a 2014 Stingray and I can tell you it is worth every penny. Don't put the vehicle down because you can not appreciate it. It was made for the track and that is where it shines. I believe in America and buy American maybe you should try and be patriotic, or maybe your not American and can not truly understand the engineering required to get a rear wheel drive car to beat the lap times of a 4 wheeled car, maybe you don't care. Either way your missing the big picture. American ingenuity once again wins out.

Ok, so you are playing the Joe McCarthy card that a person is "un-merican" because he does not like rear-wheel drive mercian sports cars. The Z28 does not exist without the trofeos, period.

Robert Wolfe We both know the Pirelli's are a significant reason why this car is so good. No argument there. And no I'm no Joe McCarthy, your entitled to your opinion same as all the other beings on this planet and that doesn't make you un-American. The un-American attitude you bring comes from your lack of support for what we as a country bring to the table. Where else in the world can you buy a track ready car for the measly sum of $75K? Nowhere. We as a nation bring our energies to bear in the fact that we don't take no as an answer or the possibility of defeat dissuade us in any way. We keep plugging away until we fix the problem, find a solution, or build an inexpensive track ready vehicle that people will buy. I'm no Camaro guy, I'm a Corvette guy, but I'll throw my lot in with all the hard working engineers, designers, assembly plant workers and aficionados of track racing that Chevy accomplished a great task and I'm hopeful there is much more to come. Just because you don't agree doesn't change my view of you as a person with his own perception and God given right of personal freedom to voice his opinion. But give credit where credit is due.

Why take such a heavy car in the first place and try to make it to a track car? Even after all tries to make it light it's still heavy. And to make such a heavy car act like a sports car it needs those massively wide tires all around. 305 is worlds widest front tires on a production car. And they are only one notch above slicks and need some heat to start working. Hence no cold or wet tracks. It also needs the extreme aero package. You have to remove that front splitter if you want to drive outside tracks. Sorry but it feel like the original car was a pig that needs these extreme measures to work and then only as a track car. Why not start with a light car in the beginning? Why start with a muscle car that works fine as such and change it so much? And this car has now NOTHING in common with a muscle car. Don't even try calling it one.
@Dgannt

brian betha Not realy. It's like those deisel truck with massive turbos that gets 1500 hp and 2000 lbs. They destroy a twin turbo Viper on the 1/4 mile. But that is it. In the end it's still a heavily made up pig. It's not a usable sports car. Teh same goes for this made up muscle car. Despite all the changes it works only as a track car. If you want to use it as a daily driver you have to remove the front splitter and change the tires. Then it will be a Lt1 Camaro.

brian betha My point was this car was not even close to being a sports car from start. Not like other sports cars that manufacturers make a lighter, special sportier version of. Despite all the changes this thing needs worlds widest front tires, and semi slicks at that, to be able to turn and stop good. That is what happens when the thing was designed for something else from start. Cars with half the rubber will be better than this. This is a meaningless product. At least Corvete Z06 had a point.

Ryan Reminga Ya, and I told them why it was wrong. If the car needs race spec underpinnings and world's widest front tires to be able to turn and stop fast, then you know it was a pig to start with. But some demographics don't get it.

brian betha My opinion is the wider opinion about some US cars. If US automakers want to sell their cars around the world then they cant keep on using the same old formula. Throw in a big engine and some monster tires to make it handle. None of these cars sell anywhere but in US. The old corvette did only sell in north America, muscle cars the same. And then people accusse others for hating on US cars. Well, look at this cartoonish car and then try telling the world it's a modern sports car.

Its a blassfomy that Chevy takes a nice looking camaro and every year makes it more ugly and stupid. That idiotic chin spoiler makes it look like one of the ricer teens got a hold of it. And yeah I agree a smaller turbo V8 would probably be better but I can't be sure. The best camaro was the 1969 model, since then its been down the hill for this car.

The zeta platform is just too heavy. You can't fix a problem that's fundamental to the chassis. Next camaro will hopefully be based on alpha platform and be lighter.
