2014 Subaru Legacy 2.5i Limited Review and Road Test

Need a mid-sized sedan under $30,000 with AWD? Right now there's only one option right now. That's because Ford's AWD Fusion is available only in expensive Titanium trim, Suzuki left America and the Chrysler 200 AWD isn't available yet. Even when that 200 AWD does land it will be in a high end 3.6L V6 trim only and is expected to cross the $30,000 mark as well. Since I wasn't able to get one fro Subaru I flew to Denver to rent a brand-new Legacy 2.5 Limited.

This Subaru will kick ass in the snow while the Fusion is still stuck in the driveway.

Yeah and in five years that Ford Fusion will be worthless, whereas that subaru would still be worth about 60% of the original price. Domestic cars lose value as soon as you drive off the lot. Toyota, Honda, Subaru cars are like domestic trucks. They keep their value

ALG's residual values for both the Ford Fusion and Subaru Legacy are about the same. After 60 months, a 2014 Ford Fusion will hold 34% of its original value and a 2014 Subaru legacy will hold 36% of its original value. Ford has improved over the years when it comes to residual values ever since they started to cut down on fleet sales. Yes, The subaru has a marginal advantage over the Ford but differences are not nearly as drastic as you made it out to be. It's among top 5 best selling sedans so that says something. I love subarus for boxer engines and symmetrical awd but don't let fanboyism get in the way.

EPR098 I am talking about the real world, not bs statistics. Right now I can buy as many 2010 Ford Fusions for about $8500 or less from people around here selling them. Actually thats their asking prices. There are 3 now selling for between $7500 and 8500, and all of those are in the 70k-100k mile range I have seen them as low as $6500 for a 120k mile unit, in perfect working order. 2010 Subaru most samples are in the 11.5 to $13k, and thats for high mileage. I saw one for $9800 and it had 192k miles on it up in the salt country. Down in Florida they are in the $16k range. On ebay same thing, and I am talking about the sold prices, not just the asking
@EPR098
@EPR098 9 лет назад
Y10Q You have to understand that many factors are factored in when calculating residual values. Have those vehicle been through a crash? number of owners? heck even the region you live affects residual values. Dealerships actually use these "bs statistics" to determine the price on a lease. You gave some rather petty examples of how a Subaru holds its value better but by that logic I can also bring up some instances in which I've found subarus selling for dirt cheap around my area, it won't matter. Residual values will always be based off the original mrsp, not some negotiated price and at the of day, residual values are nothing more than an educated guess; however, it's nice to see an industry standard as ALG to give you a basis on how a car will hold their value overtime.
@Y10Q
@Y10Q 9 лет назад
EPR098 Like where? Find me a 2010 Legacy with under 100k miles for $8500, which is what Fusions sell for every day of the week. I will fly out there and buy it. Cause I am actually in the market for an upgrade. The last Subaru I bought, 15 years ago, it was 6 years old and it had 86k miles and I got it for $3900 cash tax included. I drove 480 miles to pay for it and bring it home. Nowadays thats damned near impossible to find something like it. These days it's like $7 or $8k for a 6 year old Subaru. And that means it's almost not worth it. I would rather buy 2 Fords and take my chances.

I just bought a '14 2.5i Limited the other day, & I LOVE it! It drives like a dream, the Lineartronic doesn't have that rubber band feel that some other brand's CVTs have, the 2.5L H4 has plenty of power for a commuter, &, most importantly, it's a beautiful car inside & out!

I'm amazed with your car knowledge, and significant tech info, so far they have all been very helpful in my car search. Chrysler 200 V6 AWD will be available this spring so not that far off (around 29K). The Regal AWD would be another option but just over 30K. But if you don't want to spend that much I'd wait for the redesign.

Great review as usual Alex. The legacy/outback does seem to be a very good value to me. The closing credits answered my question of whether this was a rental. The bar codes in the rear quarter windows gave it away. The Legacy is a pretty rare car at rental lots. Did you have to specifically request it?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
I couldn't specify it, it actually turned out to be a happy coincidence. I needed to be in Denver anyway so I prowled around the Hertz lot to find something I have been unable to get my hands on to review and this was my second choice after a Forester but that was already spoken for.

Hi, Alex! Great channel! Before I ask you a question, you should know that I show your videos to my 5th grade class. You're a good example of how to deliver a message--direct, concise, and most importantly, without saying "ehhh...hmmm...ahhh..." So, thanks for that! Question: Do you know if Subaru will be using gasoline direct engines in their new models? Thanks! Also, please, do a Kia Optima review. Have a great day!
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
Thanks for the message! Speaking without linguistic fillers is certainly something that takes a great deal of practice. However as you end up noticing in the editing process it is easy to end up substituting something else instead! Subaru's 2.0L turbo is a DI engine as is the 2.0L engine in the FRS/BRZ. The BRZ uses Toyota's D4S injection system while the new 2.0L turbo uses an in house developed DI system that lacks the port injectors found in D4S. I suspect that this will eventually migrate into the 2.5L and H6 engines but since the benefit is slightly lower in a non-turbo it may take a few years before Subaru makes the change.
@pedrito77

Alex on Autos I had no idea GDI had a lower in a regular engine. Good to know. Thanks for your informative reply!

Bought the 2013 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited new back in October 2013. Car now has 100,600 miles on it and it has never needed a repair until now - and it is minor. Rear shocks need replacement, that is it. So for reliability this is hard to beat. Since I have the 5 speed auto I don't have to deal with the problems the CVT has with the torque converter. My car was just over $30,000 as it is the end of the year and I got a sizeable discount. This was a loaded car including Eyesight and every option. Since we live on a snowy mountain in CT during the winter, it is great to get home with 6 inches of ice/snow on the road. Our older FWD car (Honda Accord/Saab 9-3) got stuck even with snow tires. Great car for our needs.
@Buc_Stops_Here

Update: Now close to 11 years old, it has 145,000 miles. We had to replace the master brake cylinder, front and rear wheel bearings and front shocks. That is it. Still relatively trouble-free and we still love this car.

@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
Tough question. I would suggest going to a reliability research site like TrueDelta.com for more details but in general Subaru has been fairly good. The Legacy and other models have had head gasket issues in the past but this 2.5L engine is a new design that they claim will solve those issues but it is too early to tell.

We currently own a Ford Fusion and one thing that bugs me is the soft touch plastic and chrome plated door handles, etc. I realize this is merely cosmetic, but when the soft touch dashboard buckles under extreme heat (we live where it gets pretty warm) and the door handles crack, etc..that's one more thing that decreases the value and it just looks bad. We are switching to a SUBARU Legacy.

An intrusive center console robbing tall drivers of the knee room. Bummer. The stiff suspension might be good for folks living in areas with great roads, but here in California roads are lousy, and your spine will thank you for a Camry-style suspension. @AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
Speaking from my memory as a teen, I don't think I was careful enough with a car for a lease, but that's just me. In general Subarus make great cars for young folks, the fuel economy is good, they score well in crash tests and if you need AWD in the area you live in it is hard to beat them. A few friends of mine have bought Subaru Imprezas for their kids and they have faired well.

3-Series is not a direct competitor to Legacy. Its smaller than most midsize sedans (Camry, Accord, Fusion, Malibu, Legacy, etc.), costs more to maintain. 3-Series competes with C-Class, A4. The 3-Series is a bad buy. It's very unreliable and above all it has a bad image. It screams someone who desperately wants to drive a BMW but doesn't have the money to do so. It draws attention, which can be a bad thing. The rear seat is dismal, and that's bad for any family sedan. Plus depreciation is a huge downside.
@bokkey45
@bokkey45 8 лет назад
+spacegreycoralred Yeah...the 320i is a throw-away car. I agree, it's for people who want to drive a BMW but don't have the money to do so. It's not nearly as good as the 328i and you can easily tell a 320 from the 328 from the halogen headlights. It makes the same power as an Accord or a Camry but it costs so much extra money. At least in a $30,000 Accord or Camry you can get real leather seats, seat heaters, projector beam headlights, smart key access, etc. In the 320i for $32,000 they don't even give you real leather nor do they give you heated seats or the smart key access system. I don't even think they give you a sunroof. The reviews for that car have all been negative and if you're going to buy a BMW it should at least be the 328i. 320i is a complete waste of money and carries a negative image.

So I work for Ford because I said the Legacy was a great value, got good fuel economy and you could buy the Legacy and another car for the same price you'd pay for the Ford? I mean the Fusion is terribly attractive, but if you're after AWD and don't care about the luxury features, the Subie is $10,000 cheaper. Yes I like the Fusion, but is it worth the difference?
