If this mechanical thing doesn't work out for you, I see camera work in your future! I've never seen anyone get better, clearer shots of your work any where. It really helps us out. Thank you for your efforts!
Great video. After watching it, I was able to help my son repair his truck. This saved me so much time and I was much more prepared for the job. Thanks for the great advice.
Dude, I’m so glad I found your channel. I have a bunch of Fords with my Car Service business. All your videos are spot on them and fantastic. And coincidentally I just ordered that titan ratchet yesterday, swear to God lol thanks again, brother.
Same issue yesterday on 2015 5.0. It stranded me and 88 year old mother in law. Was fine on the way to her house 8 miles; turned off to walk her to truck. Didn’t want to start. Started on second try. AC wasn’t working right (90 degrees outside). Started watching temperature gauges nothing showing on coolant gauge, transmission temperature was fine. Didn’t make it home. Now I am worried about mother in-law seating in the heat and of course my broken down truck. I waited for ten minutes between attempts to crank truck and drive the approximately 1 mile to my house. It would not crank. I found this video after family picked up mother in law. I saw where clear codes to operate correctly. I happen to have something to clear the codes with. It was like a miracle. Everything was operating like perfectly. Today I changed the sensor. Without this video I would have been screwed. Thank you so so much! I had 2 iPhones; FaceTimed myself to get a good view of the sensor. Your video put me on it but seeing it while working it was good for me.
🤔one of Fords not so bright ideas? I enjoy watching you & Rainman Ray’s videos, they’re helpful & educational keep up the good work. With all of the computer controlled items on newer vehicles, I’ll stick to my ole faithful’93 Chevy Silverado 1500 two wheel drive with the 5.7L v-8🙂🙂
Yup. Had this same issue. I was leaving Walmart and out of nowhere my truck said it’s overheating. Throws codes. Then puts the fans on high the whole drive home. Told my mechanic the next day, googled the issue and found it’s one sensor on the backside of the block. Good video though bud 🤟
A Ford Senior Master Tech had me remove the negative battery terminal for 10 minutes and I was able to get off the highway. Saved me an expensive towing bill! It kept working fine but still changed the sensor. It is on the third one over 120,000 miles. The lift sure helps replace it!
Had this exact alert and problem happen on my 2016 5.0 158,000 miles this week. Alert showed on dash, Temp gauge went to 0, CEL on, and Trans temp showed normal like you mentioned. Before I saw your video I dropped my truck by a local non-dealer shop. They did a disposable block test and told me that test showed coolant present in the cylinders and exhaust present in the coolant system. They say bad head gasket. Recommended engine replacement. I did have them clear the CEL for me, I paid for 30 mins of labor and brought my truck home “ran perfect coming home a few miles”. Oil looks perfect, no smoke, no sweet smell exhaust. Coolant reservoir shows about 1/2 inch low below the Max fill line. I picked up this sensor at Ford this morning for $28; going to throw it on and see what happens.
Any update? I have the same truck w the exact same problem. I’m waiting on the sensor from Amazon, but when I dig in under the wheel well for the sensor, my undercarriage looks a bit different, and I CANNOT for the life of me find where the damn thing is. Any insights?
thanks to your video I was able to do this job on a friends truck. I didn’t have to remove the fender trim, I removed the two screws that were hidden for the fender liner, also the harness I didn’t have to move it out the way. But I did it blindly just by touch. Very easy. Thanks 🔧🪛🧰😎
Have not had overheating for many many years. Last time the fan belt broke and the engine burned up most of the oil and boiled out the coolant. A new belt and top up coolant and oil and was on my way. Big old cast iron V8, 472. Can’t keep driving to a garage today with modern engines.
I’m currently experiencing this on my 17’ ecoboost mustang. It was my fault for not checking the coolant before going to work. When I filled it with coolant, I had autozone check my engine light. It came back as my cylinder overheating protection is active. The car runs, idles, accelerates just fine and doesn’t give the notion that it wants to stall while driving….
Same thing happened to my 2002 f150 but completely opposite. Coolant temp sensor was dead throwing a p0128. I verified that the thermostat was not hung open and when I hooked my scanner up to it the reference voltage was five but the sensor was only 300 ish ohms when the engine was stone cold
This happened to me today same symptoms, read 100 comments. 2015 with a 5.0 bought it in’18 and foolishly got a service contract. I’d almost rather change the sensor myself than deal with those DB’s trying to convince me that it’s not covered after the work is done just cuz the service manager needs to make his bonus. Ahhhh corporate America 🇺🇸
My 06 F250 does the same thing. Temperature gauge goes to full hot but the engine is not hot. I’ve had it in the shop twice, replaced sensor and harness twice. Once in awhile it will do it again. I simply turn the engine off, wait a few minutes, restart the engine and it’s all good until the next time.
Just read your comment. I assume you have the 6.2L. Have you replaced the sensor. My truck did the same thing a month or so ago and I could not figure out the problem. Haven't had any issue since and it runs perfectly.
Similar situation for myself on my 2017 3.5 ecoboost. 3 years ago radiator & new water pump. 6 months ago hauling a load with ac on truck overheated and blew coolant out the relief. Shop replaced the tstat. Was good over the winter but then about a week ago when I hauled again with cruise on ac running air temps around 55 and it progressively warms up quickly and throws the overheat. However no check engine lights. Pulled over and turned ac off and temps went back to normal fairly quick. Finished my remaining 10 minute drive. Fished the day and went to drive back home. Got 20 minutes down the road and it did it again. Still no check engine. Any recommendations on quick things to check before I bring it back in? I got a warranty so they can fix it up but just curious if you have anything I can tell them in advance
Have a 2014 F150 3.5L... temp guage after an hour would climb without trans temp climbing. Switched CHT sensor oem and still doing it. Thinking thermostat ,but its only 2 years old and NO CEL or warnings even when its just below the "red"?!? Thinking could be bad CHT wiring maybe.
Thanks for the video, just arrived at work and had this happen. Will have to get back home to confirm the code but seems like should be okay and then place an order for the sensor.
Watch my video on engineering mode and put your truck in engineering mode and you can monitor your trans temperature to verify whether or not it's actually overheating
@@FordBossMe thanks yeah, I have an OBD-II reader and was looking at it. Temps never went above 204F. Funny thing was the gauge in the dash had the coolant needle at completely cold when the error came back. I cleared the 1289 code and the fans immediately turned off and the gauge went right back to the center. Sounds like that all but confirmed just the sensor. Thanks again for the informative video.
I have an older 2007 expedition with the cylinder shut off cool down feature. When I first got the vehicle on warmer days and in reverse the cylinder shut off would engage and I thought it was a reverse problem and then it started doing it while slow rolling after driving and I thought the vehicle was breaking down from being old and then I learned about the cool down feature. It does it all the time now and I think I'm having the issue you are showing. There is no dash warning for it on a 2007 but everything with the truck is running fine as you've stated.
@@FordBossMe It glugs like a diesel when it does it and I used to think it was stalling out so I would quickly drive to increase RPM's but I know now that as soon as it seems to putter out it re-corrects itself and then idles normally but its still annoying, it will do it when driving slow now and it slightly changes the performance and when you are by people they think your truck is in the process of breaking down.
We just had a lil feeeze here in Texas under 32 degrees for over 50 hours that light came on after driving it the first day of the freeze. And went to go to the store the next morning and that light came on before even starting the car seems to be running fine we have a 2015 explorer Xlt so can’t see any other gauges which kinda sucks but seems to be alright
What if that doesnt show up but the fan runs like crazy and the coolant temp is like going up and down and if i slow down i goes down still the fan ran like crazy is the sensor is starting to be broken? Its a 3.5 ecoboost is it located same as the 5.0? Thanks!
Ok, I give up after 2.5hrs of frustration, how does the clip for the wires come apart? I’ve tried a little screwdriver and can’t seem to get the clip to release. Wish there was enough room to have filmed that part. The way this presented for my daughter on her 2016 F150 5.0 is pretty much as described, she got about 3 miles from the house, the temp gauge pegged at max, over temp warning message popped up, and the engine started shaking and barely ran. She shut it down and called dad. I pulled it home, pulled the therm and tested it on the stove, working perfectly. Went searching on good ol utube and found this vid. Thanks for posting, really helped us out in figuring out what was happening. Now about that clip…
Clip for wires? I have no clue what clip you are talking about There is a connector for the sensor - it pulls back and you push the end of the lock down like it's the release and pull the connector off I don't know what else to say If you want to video chat me later and show me what you are trying to do here is my email Poissorichard.rp@gmail.com
I bought 2016 f150 2.7 echo to this day only 16k miles . I got it brand new off lot first owner . 4 weeks later turbo on left goes out . and high temp light on and fan is racing . took it to ford and they refuse to fix it . I was never ruff with the truck I hardly drove it because I m a otr driver. So basically i got screwed on that truck . I still have truck but it just sits. there was a really good reason it sit long to . to be honest i feel like washing my hands of it. lets say i got a free truck after taking 3 years waiting for legal action to rule in my favor.
Hey Rich. Great video once again. Hearing thise fans kick to high and a big red warning message will make a person pucker! Happened to me just yesterday out of the blue. My question is this - is it possible to get to the sensor from the top? It is about 25* here and I am sure to break about every clip on the molding if I try it that way. Thanks!
Unless you are a contortionist I don't know how you're going to get your hand all the way back down in there but I'm not going to say it's not possible I really think that you honestly have to remove the fender well
Great Info. Question if I may 16 PIU 3.7 Weak Trans Mounts caused L/S Inner CV Damage PTU Coolant Lines. Common ? Saw my First Today 120,000 miles. Parts on Intergalactic Back Order. Thanks for your Time.
Confirmed weak motor and trans mount on PIU let's trans drop low enough for l/s inner CV to contact PTO Cooler lines , causing coolant leak. New Mounts make a big difference.
Hi rich, love your videos. Is there any chance I could send you a short video of my 2014 f150 eco boost and let me know if this high pitch tick is normal or a concern?
Coyote? 20+ years ago, Mexico Hermosillo Ford factory made a pickup with a particular trim level for the Mexican market. They called it the Lobo (wolf).
@@gabrielalvarado8959 I was there in 2005. Because of the drought the city would cut the water to the colonia every morning and not give it back till late afternoon. Do they still do that? My host told me there were 99 curves to reach Aconchi up the mountain and that there were hot and cold springs up there. I asked if he was sure it was 99 and not 100(?) He said he was sure because he drove the hill daily to go to university for several years. I still remember the hot dog man who had a stand at night at the Walmart parking lot.
@@obsoleteprofessor2034 Hi, We moved to Hermosillo in 2007, my business is in mining, the Ford assembly plant is practically our neighbor, this year I have seen lots of Maverick trucks and Broncos coming out of the factory. Yes, they still cut the water service from time to time. Now days there are lots of hot dog stands around the city specially at night. Certainly I have count the curves all the way to Aconchi.
My 2011 eco 3.5 f150 is doing the same thing but without codes or check engine light. (I do have a basic scan tool). Not loosing any coolant. Trany temp not going over 205 while doing 80 in Florida heat. Engine temp allegedly hit 245 then if I got on it it said reduced engine power due to overheating.
@@FordBossMe will do. Thanks for making all the videos you do and putting out all the great content. You are really helping us all out and l really appreciate it.
48k miles later. I have a 2015 Eco boost F150 Platinum. Just spent a ton of money on the piece of crap. Leaving it in my driveway to slowly rot away. :
Completely different engine so obviously everything is going to be different I have a standard mounted engine you have a transverse mounted engine and yes it's everything's going to be under the intake manifold I believe
hey i got a 2017 f150 5.0 with 50k on it and it shakes at idle i just got it and asked the dealership to tune it up before i got it. they couldn’t tell me exactly what they replaced but it still shakes. any ideas i think it needs spark plugs. no check engine light
@@FordBossMe i have been running it on 93 for the last two tanks and have gone on some long drives. i think it runs better but it’s not right , dropping it off this week to have the dealership take another look.
Jeeze, Gotta Dismantle the Passenger side of the Truck to change a sensor that's litterally buried. Engineers??? If they had to work on these units they'd think twice about some of these things. So much for the K I S S method.
Not all parts of a vehicle are easy to get to. That is the same for all brands and models of vehicles (and trucks). From an engineering point of view, this sensor has to pick up cylinder head temperature in a spot where it accurately reflects the engine temp (far enough away from coolant temp). In this case that position is not easy to access, though it is not impossibly difficult. I have had issues where engineers have placed/designed certain components. But most times they do a reasonable job. So give them a bit of slack. I am sure some things you have designed have given people grief. But I am sure you had your reasons. Retired mechanic in Land Down Under.
I am having the same issue after changing a cracked thermostat housing. Drives fine for 10-15 minutes then the temp gauge rises and the overtemp light comes on. No check engine light or code. Let vehicle sit for 10 mins and you can watch the gauge come back to normal. Start driving and ten minutes later it does it again. The engine does seem hot. Trans temp remains in the middle. Bad thermostat? Air in the system? Any Ideas?
I watched the video and it’s say for 3.5. Mine is a 5.0. Is there a updated thermostat for that as well? I installed a after market thermostat housing assembly probably should of stayed OEM.
@fordbossme I have a 2016 f150 5.0, stalled on highway and this message came up, didn't start after and smelt burning and fuel. Would this be the same problem?
I don't know man you you have to start looking at fluids and everything and making sure everything's full and then you have to start going through the process of elimination
If it were me I would know what was going on and I would feel safe but telling somebody else to do that without knowing they're complete situation and them not being a mechanic to be able to assess the situation like I could I couldn't give you that advice Theoretically I would say yes as long as you're monitoring your trans temperature you would be good but it's also going to make the vehicle run like crap it's going to be dumping fuel it's going to be doing all kinds of things that could damage the catalytic converters The overall answer to your question would be not a bright idea so no
I was having the same issues, fans racing and truck overheating. I replaced the CHT and it still overheats typically when I drive it at or above 60mph. My next option is to replace the thermostat. Has and anyone on here been able to fix this issue? If so, what do I need to do?
Hi, I have a 17 F150 5.0. Had a temperature fluctuation last winter so I changed the thermostat an that seem to correct the issue. A couple weeks ago it started doing that same fluctuation again so I changed the CHT sensor but it did not correct the problem. Today I noticed that when I turned the a/c on the temp dropped right back down to normal, 194-198. So that made me realize that the fans not kicking on. We hooked it up to a computer and the temperature correlated to the same as the digital readout. We could turn the fan on with the computer but still no fan when temps got a above 200. We checked the fuses and moved relays around still no fan unless the a/c was on. Do you know what may be causing the fans to not kick on when the engine heats up?
@@LowRotoris there a thermo switch for the fans??? I have a 2014 F150 3.5L new CHT and it will climb slightly for a short minute then drop, can't hear the fans .... maybe a bad thermo switch???
I’m having the same problem, doesn’t throw a engine code and coolant bubbles once it gets hot. Wait 2 minutes and it’s fine. Coolant level stays full trans temp stays normal any suggestions
