What's up everybody!
This is a DIY how-to on replacing the water pump on a 1st Gen. 2015-2021 Chevy Trax 1.4T.
Torque Specs included.
...Sorry the video got so long, but I like to be thorough as possible to eliminate any potential questions so this video can help everyone from an individual who's never wrenched before, to an individual who might be a mechanic/tech. For all my experienced individuals, you can obviously skip around to find the info you need...whether it be torque specs, part #'s, etc. etc..
*DISCLAIMER: I am NOT Master Tech, just a long time wrencher.
Vehicle in video is a 2020 Chevy Trax 1.4T.

An excellent step by step video. I am not a mechanical person, but I followed all the same steps he was explaining, and thanks God had no problems at all. It was an arduous job for me due to my lack of knowledge about cars and took me almost the entire day to get it done, but I did it thanks to this exceptional video. Before doing this, I took my car to a repair car shop, and they told me the cost would be close to $1,700. This was enough reason to do it myself. It is a job to be done with certain grade of precision, and I had to watch the video several time to not doing something wrong, but believe me, it is not the end of the world. I also changed the timing belt for a new one. In total the cost of buying the water pump and the belt plus a few tools cost me less than $ 200 bucks. Worth it to try, and something else you learn to do and challenge yourself.

Thanks so much for the details you included in this video. I was unable to find any others with information on the recommended bolt replacement, let alone the specific torquing process. You have saved many DIY'ers the cost of purchasing a factory service manual, which would otherwise be the only way to acquire this info. In addition, much of the process included here will apply to other GM models, as well. Nicely done.

Great information. After watching this and two others, I was able to replace the pump, thermostat, and belt for my neighbor. Dealer had quoted him $1600. We did it for the price of parts, a set of e-torx and an extended hose clamp tool. Thanks for all the info.

Good instructional video, if anyone is doing the 1.8L Non turbo engine it's a little different - water pump is further forward and lower down. I recommend removing the plastic splash guards underneath the car as the engine needs to be raised further up and you don't want the jack to slip. Also remember to get a new O ring for the crossover pipe as they are another known leak point and not part of the kit.

What are the part numbers for the 3 motor mount bolts that need to be replaced?
@TheOriginalBeeCee
@TheOriginalBeeCee 6 месяцев назад
I’m not sure to be honest, I didn’t replace them, and in my honest opinion they don’t need to be replaced. IMO you really don’t even need to replace the water pump bolts they recommend replacing that I outlined in the video either, but at the same time I get wanting to replace them to do it by the book. I would definitely say the MM bolts aren’t need though.

What if your truck still running hot but no leak but all antifreeze is gone, brand new water pump and thermostat, where is the antifreeze is going to, no leaks
@TheOriginalBeeCee
@TheOriginalBeeCee Год назад
Hard to say without seeing it. But there are a variety or possibilities. Could be burning/mixing coolant (head gasket), radiator, could actually be leaking and you just aren’t seeing it….i had someone bring me a car one time and they said it wasn’t leaking antifreeze and I found the leak….it really just needs be evaluated. If it was me, I would start back at the thermostat and make sure its opening, and new parts these days are definitely coming defective out of the box more than ever.

I have a Sonic 2013 Ecotec 1.4L turbo with overheating issues, I already changed the radiator, thermostat, reservoir and all the hoses and still having issues. This is the last thing I think I will need to change, hope it's works or this car goes directly to the Junkyard. 😓
@TheOriginalBeeCee
@TheOriginalBeeCee 9 месяцев назад
These things had head gasket issues as well, could even be that. Head gasket was done on the car in the video a couple weeks after this job. But you should see some leaking from the pump from the bottom if you jack it up and do some investigating. I feel like the Sonics were good for cracked thermostat housings too.
@Dahkatsmeow

While putting the new pump in bolt number three broke off. I haven't been able to get the piece out. Is it even possible to get out? And will the seal fail because of this?
@TheOriginalBeeCee
@TheOriginalBeeCee 6 месяцев назад
Ahh im sorry to hear that. that’s always a nightmare when that happens. It can be removed, there are various ways…tap & die being one of them. I would maybe watch a few videos on RU-vid of bolt extraction for reference and some insight. Its definitely something that needs to be approached carefully & cautiously. And yes, it can definitely compromise the seal and be a potential leak point at the broken bolt from not being there.
@Dahkatsmeow
@Dahkatsmeow 6 месяцев назад
@TheOriginalBeeCee Thank you so much for the video. By the way; the instructions and video are the best I've come across. Did you ever find out what the rattling sound is? I have that same sound but i have replaced all three mounts and checked the heat shield.
@TheOriginalBeeCee
@TheOriginalBeeCee 6 месяцев назад
I actually didn’t dig into this car any further after this pump job. I suggested the vehicle needed a head gasket, but it wasn’t a job I wanted to take on. So the car was taken to a shop and the head gasket was replaced…and apparently now is running a lot better.

Bro I'm elbow deep in this and I've dome all the same shit but one of the long bolts that's right under the pulley just goes all the way in with nothing to thread it too. I didn't strip it, I never got it to even start by finger. I've checked alignment and I'm in. I have 6 in and still nothing will even start to catch. Its a long bolt, I don't understand how it goes all the way in and catches nothing

..I’m sure someone will be offended by this and start crying, but as they say…the truth hurts. But from my experience with vehicles over the past 16-17 years Chevy is by far the cheapest and most unreliable manufacturer from all angles. From interior quality, to overall reliability, to part failure/defectiveness….I’ve seen the most, and worst things come from GM products. People still swear by them though like Gm is investing in them and paying them to drive their POS’s. …& just to add fuel to the fire….as I eluded to and suspected in this video, the head gasket was bad on this car and was replaced almost right after this video was recorded. So at 70k this thing had a leaking VCG, a bad & leaking water pump, and a bad head gasket.
