Drew A Rockwell Secretariat probably the greatest racehorse that ever lived. Makes me proud to be Virginian. American Pharoah is my personal favorite. As a young black man I don't think many others my age and race probably care about horse racing but I love it. I'll never forget the BCC. Everyone in my house watched and saw how brilliant Pharoah was and they don't even follow the sport. This horse was magical. I'll never forget him.

Shame on any enthusiast who has a single negative thing to say about Pharoah. He won the TC, then backed that up by winning the Haskell, finishing a close second at the Travers, then destroying the field and the track record at the Breeder's Cup. In a sport that has been in a tailspin for decades, AP brought six months' worth of wonderful positive attention. What more could a racing fan ask for?

It's hard to take anyone over a Triple Crown/Grand Slam winner. For 37 years (including just the year before) it seemed almost impossible that we'd ever see a TC again. As far as other horses, we tend to focus on the ones who lost the TC bid at the Belmont. But Afleet Alex also won 2/3 legs and his final stretch performances at the Preakness and Belmont were phenomenal

@JayB2
@JayB2 8 лет назад
+SkyPantherr too bad they cant just stud him for a few months, let him rest, and then bring him back to racing. Most of the time a horse peaks out at about 4 years old. Im sure he could dominate until he is about 5. But i also heard the insurance would be too much to ever afford. Thats one of the main reason they cant do it.
@EQWranglers
@EQWranglers 8 лет назад
+Jay B The insurance premiums for next year would be more than he could make if he won every race he started in. No matter how successful he is, they're losing money, and you can't argue it would raise his stud fee as he's already at $200,000 per foal for his first crop. He is that very rare breed where essentially no matter how much more he does, he cannot become more valuable, and therefore there is no monetary value in racing him longer. Many people were arguing to retire him after the Belmont, because he's done enough; we are blessed that the Zayats ran him 3 more times and allowed him to cement his legacy. One of the greatest 3YO seasons we have ever seen a horse run.
@ALittleParanormal

Yea, racehorses usually retire pretty earlier but at-least 5 y.o. stallion, California Chrome, is still racing for this year and maybe some portion of next year (per owner(s) statement i've seen from an article somewhere).. Horse racing needed something like this to pick it back up. It's a pleasure to watch such a great athlete finally emerge after all these years of waiting. Yes, there are horses who are better than others, however, every Triple Crown winner has done an amazing feat. I see Secretariat has come up a lot here in the topics naturally; Bold Ruler's line produced some really nice foals. Ruffian was also from that line.

I have long enjoyed watching Secretariat's last race (Toronto, October 1973) out here on RU-vid and it always makes me tear up a bit. Like American Pharoah, Secretariat won the famed Triple Crown in 1973 and was entered in some key races after his tremendous victory at Belmont. Also like Secretariat, American Pharoah was coming into his last race after having suffered a narrow loss in his previous race. (Hollywood can't write this any better!) I felt in my heart that American Pharoah would follow the way of Secretariat with a very comfortable win in the Breeders' Cup. Who for second then? That was harder for me to figure - there were several wonderful horses in the field. In the end I "wheeled" an exacta (4/all) with $10.00 on each horse (hoping for a long-shot in second, of course). My $70.00 bet paid something close to $400.00 (the exacta times five) which was greatly boosted by the 33-1 (#6 horse) which came in for second. I wish all my bets were this easy. P.S. Much credit should forever go to Mr. Zayat (owner of AP) and Miss Penny Chenery (Secretariat's owner, now 93 and still going strong!) for not retiring their beautiful horses directly after their Triple Crown win at Belmont. That would have been the "easy and sensible" thing to do - instead, these classy owners wanted to better promote the sport they so love by showcasing their champions in selected events which gave many thousands of (current and future) fans a chance to glimpse horse racing history. Forever thanks for wholly giving back in the way you both did!

Can we not compare Secretariat and AP all the time? Jesus, all the TC winners are special in their own way, there's no sense even debating who would win because Secretariat is long gone!!

I agree. I just watching this punctuation mark on a great career. Sure, I would have loved to have seen him in the 2016 Classic with Arrogate and Chrome, but more for the spectacle. I don't need to compare AP with Big Red.

I think the fact that people feel such a need to defend Secretariat against him now speaks for itself actually.

Well, Secretariat did set a new record in 2012, becoming the first horse to do so 23 years after he had been gone.

I think it's because AP is Secretariat's great-great-geat grandson is why they keep getting compared. Being attached to such a famous horse in pedigree, expectations naturally rose up when AP began to perform and perform well.

saw this horse win the Belmont 20 feet from the railing, standing on a bench above everyone's head. when he hit the stretch i've never seen a crowd collectively lose their fucking minds like that, everyone knew they were catching this one. hit the trifecta too, $1 paid out $55, wish i dropped $10 -_- there might not be another horse of this quality for a generation. and if one does come along, surely it'll be from the same bloodlines as Secretariat the greatest thoroughbred that ever lived

I'm a European race fan who knows the American scene less well but for me this is the best US horse since the incomparable Secretariat and he is comparable to Frankel and all the greats.....a truly great race horse.

Just so impressive. The best horses in the world are targeted for the BC Classic and AP just obliterates the field. The discussion can now be had where American Pharoah fits among the great horses of all time. It's probably a tough case to put him over Secretariat or Man O' War, but any other horse? 3rd greatest horse of all time?
@reiningmoney

+Randy Bailin sure he is great horse, didn't beat much in the classic and he was beaten in the Travers..... don't even mention him in the same sentence as the great Secretariat... Citation was better then AP

+reiningmoney I have one way of seeing this. When phenomenal horses run, they make great horses look like donkeys running against them. People say AP got away with easy fractions, nobody went with him early, they gave it away to him....let me tell you, did they not see Tonalist and Frosted making those big middle moves at the far turn to try to take it to AP? Did they not see Ortiz swatting Keen Ice before the last turn to try to stay in contention? Did they not see Honor Code not even make up any ground the last 1/8th as AP was pulling away after setting the pace and still put around 10 lengths on him? These are all good horses, American Pharoah just makes them look like regular horses. Give this horse the credit that is due. Whom has he beaten? Pretty much everything that has shown up!

+Randy Bailin No. He's the greatest horse in decades and he is wonderful to watch, but I'd say it's a stretch for him to make it in the top 15. There have been many, many amazing horses throughout history, most of them unknown to the general public because they haven't had movies made about them. :) Of course, it's all speculation. Times and wins and losses mean little when generations separate horses of high caliber.

+reiningmoney Even the great Secretariat lost races in his time. His loss to Onion in the Whitney is still considered one of the greatest upsets of all-time. Every athlete has the potential to have a bad outing, no matter how dominant they are. That said, I agree that AP isn't Secretariat's caliber. But few horses, no matter how great, ever were or will be.

Pharaoh had a great stride and mind and the travers loss showed a champions heart even in defeat. I don't like to rank horses all time but he surely must be on the top 15 of all time.

Every great champion should go out this way, by absolutely burying the competition. I remember the pre-race hype when everyone was talking about Shared Belief and Beholder and Honor Code, and how well those horses were running. Then Pharaoh got beat at the Travers, and everyone was jumping on Belief or Beholder's bandwagon to take down AP. I remember my last comment about the race online was saying- Let's keep it real here. AP is going to win this race. Sure, Shared Belief and Beholder both, unfortunately, dropped out, but AP ran a race that showed it wouldn't have mattered. Certainly the greatest horse since Cigar, and probably the greatest horse since Seattle Slew.
