2015 CRV starter R & R. Non-Professor mechanic. Vehicle had intermittent yet very persistent no crank, no Start symptoms consistent with a starter solenoid type of issue - “click” no start. 56000 miles. Battery replaced (4 yrs old), primary starter relay replaced, secondary starter relay swapped to known operable, all appropriate fuses examined, power to control lead on starter tested for good power on all start attempts. Purchased remanufactured OEM Honda part 31200-5A2-A52RM online for $266. Seems to have cleared the issue.

Experienced same symptoms with my 2016 at 90k miles. Replaced battery. I could hear a click each failed start when windows were down. If windows were up no sound could be heard from in cabin. Replaced with car quest remanufactured model. Took about 3 hours. Big hands small spaces takes time. Definitely recommend assistant to hold in place for starting bolts. Getting boot back on properly was tricky. Probably didn’t have good technique. Thank you for the tutorial.

Thanks for the video. Just did this on 2016 crv. Worked from outside and on back under vehicle on jack stands. Removal not so bad. Removed top bolt and power nut through wheel well bottom bolt from under car. Replaced same way just incredibly difficult to start all 3 especially working blind around the boot and power connector. However repair cost was $60 for tools and 100$ for amazon supplied starter compared to 850$ at dealer. Has worked perfectly for about 50 starts so far. Thanks again.

Great video!!!! The CR-V that you’re working on is an all wheel drive model. With the front wheel drive only CR-V you can easily change the starter with short sockets reaching over the crossmember beside the exhaust. Takes about 20 minutes on the front wheel drive model.

My experience replacing the starter on my 2015 Honda CRV was quite different. Getting the two starter attaching bolts using long extensions was relatively easy . But I simply could not get at the small connecter to pull it off. I decided to take off the "A" exhaust as Honda recommends. The three rear attaching nuts were, of course, badly corroded and I needed heat from an inductor coil to get them off. The front three came off with an impact tool. After threading the pipe out over the frame cross member with difficulty (a tight fit), I had more but still quite limited room to disconnect the two electrical connections. I disconnected the main connection from the top bolt, not the one facing the wheel well. This was a mistake. I should have removed the front main connector nut from the wheel well using extensions. In my case, even with the new starter tilted toward me, I still did not have room to start the large top connecter nut. I finally resorted to hanging the starter with a zip tie temporarily so I could get the connector nut on. The small connector attachment was next and required the starter to be nearly in the mounting position to get enough slack to get the connector snapped into place. I was able to get the starter attaching bolts started fairly easy because of the extre room obtained by removing the exhaust pipe. I am very impressed busboy4 that you were able to get the starter replaced without removal of the "A" exhaust pipe. I have been doing auto and truck repair for many years but still my time for this job was about 6 hours although one and a half hours were waisted trying to get the connectors off without removing the exhaust pipe. For this vehicle, I would definitely recommend exhaust pipe removal and a ton of light. I did not have a lift and that makes the work more time consuming.

THANK YOU!! The visuals are fantastic. I was apprehensive to try this myself but now feel very confident.

I just replaced the starter on a 2016 at 83k miles (same symptoms with the click and the battery was just a year old). It took me about 3 hours as well (did not remove the exhaust or “L” manifold bracket). There are two connectors that you remove by pinching a plastic “lever” and pulling. The top nut for the electrical connector is tough to get to with the weather boot constantly in the way. One note if you do not remove the intake “L” bracket is that I used a wobble extension to get to the top bolt since you don’t have a direct path with a standard straight extension. I ended up getting the bottom bolt on first hand tight (used painters tape to hold the bolt to the socket) so that I could get the top bolt hole lined up (which you can barely see let alone touch) and I taped that top bolt to the socket as well. Very helpful video! Thank you.

Great vid! Have to change the starter on my wife’s car tomorrow. This video is super helpful for to decide if I want to take the job on myself or have a mechanic do it.

Some have commented that removal of the exhaust pipe, as recommended by Honda, makes the starter replacement easier. Having tried both methods, I agree 100%. Removal of the exhaust pipe makes it so much easier to remove the starter and attaché the wires. Pick-up a couple of exhaust seal gaskets for about $12 and soak the attachment nuts with penetrating oil 12 hours before beginning the job.

Thank you for the video. Saved me a ton of time and was able to replace the starter by myself in less than 2 hours.

Thank you so much for making the 'from-underneath-the-car' view available! I love that lift!!!! I am jealous!!!!!! But even then the starter appears to be quite well hidden... ...but what about my 2002 Honda CRV? Is the starter just as well hidden on that year? ...I heard that hitting the starter with a wrench may help it start and since I'm ready to go on a vacation, I really don't have much time to deal with replacing the starter right now. Looking for the best access to hit it with a wrench!!! Any advice from anyone of the techs and mechanics out there would be appreciated!! :)
