Not really an install video but couldn't find many deep explanations on this, questioned whether it worked or not, what to do with certain things. Figured I would go over some things about it
There were so many small questions I had that I either really deeply researched or just winged it and did it so I figured I'd give as many tips as I could. Wish I videoed the install but I'm just starting to video things. I'm really glad it at least helped someone out and if you have any other questions definitely let me know
@markbuildstx If you have a 15+ F150 you will need to drill a hole for the new sensor location. There are two good places to choose from. Upper left corner of the back or upper left corner on the right side of the manifold. I went with the rear mounted option and did not need a harness extension.
Finally got mine installed this week. Your video was very helpful. I went with OZ omega tune. This motor flies! Had to figure out the CAI due to different angles.
Thanks, very informative. I have a 2016 with a S & B intake , Hipertech tune , full 3 in exhaust with 3.73 with 33 in tires . It surprises a lot of diesels . Especially from 100 mph to 125 mph they fall way back !……
I purchased the kit from stage 3 motorsports. Bought the extra hose just watching your video! Thanks for putting it out there! The only thing changed is the intake manifold came from 5 star tuning already had sensor installed on it. And yes got tuner with 2 tunes!
It seems that Stage 3 wants something like $1600, but comes with an intake and tunes with a tuner. I already have an intake and a SCT tuner. So, I think all I would need is the intake ($300) and tunes for $100 or $150. Does that sound about right?
Thx for the Tips! As you say the other vids didn’t mention maps sensor. Installing mine today do to a IMRC issue, no need to monkey with the stock manifold anymore. Got the manifold and tuner today, exhaust will be here tomorrow and cold air is on the way. Cheers!
I think when I said PCV, you meant the EVAP Purge....the part that's usually 2-bolts with plug and vacc hose behind the Throttle body is EVAP. PCV is in the cam cover and has a tube to the intake.
Finally! Have this intake sitting here for couple months with a sct tuner couldn’t find all the info on install… I think I’m ready to go now. Thanks a lot for video. I have roush intake as well. That was holding me back to
I'm really glad it's helped people so far. I couldn't find anything about it really on the newer ones, but it's really a great add on. I did the 0- I guess you can say 90s with a ton of stuff in the bed and on an economy tune. I couldn't find my original video I took a while back on the performance tune, but it pushed me back in my seat
I have 2019 roushe I didn't know the intake sucked . They sure make these trucks hard to work on I'm 6 foot I can barely check the oil with out a step. Stool
Great video. I’m getting ready to put this intake on a Gen 2 F150 5.0 and install into a 89 Notch Mustang. Did you change your injectors or stay stock?
I've got a question if you don't mind answering. The throttle body electrical connector has another connector in line with it. I assume I need that. Take part off old manifold and bolt it where on the boss manifold?
I had a roush Cai that I've had for a while. I did have to wrestle a bit at the throttle but it worked. Some people trim it a little to get the flatter curve but I didn't wanna do that. Without the box it fits fine though. There is an aem one that 5star has on their site in a kit, if you just search that one separate from the kit it would fit fine with the new angle of the intake
@@joerobbins3581 it's really tight to do it. It will slide in though. Just a little wrestling with it and angles. Def not meant for this offset. Without the box it should fit fine though. I had to squeeze it in to put the box back. You could also pop the throttle body off to just install the thing together temporarily. But if you want it very flush you may just need to trim the curve to be flatter than how it went into the original. Reason I didn't is because I may decide to upgrade to the gt350 or 18gt intake down the line and they have the same angle
I did 87 eco, 87 performance and 93 performance. You build the tune to what you have, i chose cold air intake, boss 302 monifold, catback exhaust. I had to use a computer to download the tunes to the brain of the tuner then loaded them into the truck
This may stupid, but the "5 Star Tune" that you mention @ 3:46. Do I take it somewhere to be tuned or is that a tuner that i buy? Sorry if it's obvious. Thanks!
I bought a tuner. Then bought the 5 star tune when I did this. I'm not positive if you could just get it tuned by a shop that maybe uses hp tuners, don't know if ford allows that brand at all. I know on my camaro I was able to tune it without needing a tuner, just a single use ticket type system through the website. Fords I've only really ever seen people use computers. I'll try and look up if it's possible without a tuner but I did buy a tuner for this, and they're on sale in some places like American trucks for 4th of july
@@sKoutzyy I ended up going with the tuner you suggested from AT. Was on sale. I will let you know how it goes. Also, for the hose you extended with the clamps, what size tubing is it?
@@sKoutzyy What tune did you get? I did the 87 Octane, but now i'm gettng 5 codes thrown and a CEL every time I start the truck. Getting U0422, P2019, P2014, P2011, P2008.
Were you able to drive it without the tune, for a bit. I'm looking into buying the Boss 302 to replace my intake due to failed sensors in my 2017 F150. I've always done my own modifications, but this im slightly worried about. Mostly the tuning.
Yes you can. I did for months. Power wasn't gone but it definitely felt better after the tune finally but it still drives fine without it. It'll show a check engine light though until you tune that out. What I've been seeing that I seem to now recommend is if you can afford the 2018 gt intake, it's apparently better. I may switch over one day. But this is definitely pretty powerful in a performance tune too. It has really good acceleration and definitely feels like there's added power
There’s little to no point in installing anything that increases airflow without a tune. Even on a MAP car. Yes you need to bite the bullet and get it tuned from a reputable tuner like Lund racing, or VMP performance. They have the fastest coyote vehicles. If you can’t afford it yet then you need to save up. Have the laptop and tuning software ready before you even purchase the manifold, throttlebody, and intake. It’s not cheap to do things the right way, but the right way is the only way you should do it.
So could you explain how you moved the pcv valve down to the bottom of the intake manifold because that’s what’s confusing me about this install right now
I'll have to look to be sure but I believe I just hooked some coolant hose to where the hard line normally connects, let it hang under the throttle body and hooked the other end of the coolant hose where the hard line would go normally on the intake
For the newer trucks I would go for the gt manifold. Gonna fit better and I think youll be able to hook up the imrc, plus advancements in the manifold over the years seem to outperform the older performance ones. But issue is the more expensive they are and I'm sure a few more things needing to be done. But plus side is with the 18 gt, the throttle body will sit the same direction and all
I just started this today I had to Google like every single clip and how to use it lol. Unfortunately I can't find anything on these IMRCs. I'm sitting in the engine bay of the truck like you are but I still can't seem to get these clips off the back
Oh man it was a royal pain. But they did. I think I just focused on ripping or somehow cutting the tape they have on them. They're taped together and if you can find them they're also I think partially plastic clipped
@@sKoutzyy yeah I finally got the tape off like you were talking about it looks like they electrical taped like the cable to the clip for some reason I got all those off but now the clip itself is just clipped in there's a little red tab but I can't seem to get past it
@@D3lphie those stupid red tabs are a pull back and then it releases. They suck and are very hard the first time to unclip. If you have something angled, even like an angled pick and can get it to lock onto it and pull back, it might work. That's how I did mine, there was no room really to get my fingers on it or if there was it was just that much of a pain. Pushing the connector forward a little if you can while pulling back on the red clip seems to sometimes work on those too
I bought the complete kit from stage 3 motorsports and I’m hoping to install it soon. My question is will the truck pass smog with the kit on and the truck tuned? My initial reason for buying the kit was that I’ve got the imrc code on my truck currently so I figured I should upgrade and hopefully fix the engine code in the process.
It should. I passed inspection but every state is different. The imrc codes go away when it's tuned. Just tell the tuner to delete those codes, 5star has a specific selection for tuning with it and in the comments just put delete imrc codes and once you tune it they're gone
When did you do with all the big bulky stuff on the back of the oem intake? Did you just cut it all off and cap it? Then pretty much just reinstalled the map sensor? You also put the green connector under the throttle body
The barrel looking things that were wired? Just leave them on the old intake. They're for the runner controls. You don't use them anymore. I just left the harness unattached from those 2, then drilled it for the sensor in the picture. Those other connections will set off a code but not effect it, but you can get them tuned out with the tune
@@michaelsimek913 yup exactly that. Just put in the tune request that the imrc codes need to be deleted to make sure but I'm pretty sure it's automatic for that intake anyways
Just to give an idea too, after finally cleaning my air filter, I'm getting 16.5 mpg on this with the tune in economy mode, and on a 3 inch lift on 35s with some tools and stuff in the bed. So you really don't go down in gas mileage after the tune at all, but after cleaning everything I'm impressed
@@sKoutzyy I have the AirRaid air intake, so mine is the sealed box, I also have the bbk 85mm throttle body on it. Also the Red MSD coils and 87 tune. I also have flowtech shorty hedders ceramic that I need to put on. I also have 40 series flowmaster muffler single in and dual out. I plan to tell 5 star tune all that I have done when I get my tune from them
The auto start stop? I think you can get that tuned out but if you didn't tune it out it'll still show up because the computer thinks it connected. If you're talking about the Intake manifold runner controls then yes they will show up until you get them tuned out. Once the tune is in with those deleted the check engine light goes away
Sorta, everything fit, it more pulled it further down than up, but you can't use the box because the pcv hose won't reach if it's up that high and that hose is hard plastic. I haven't tried yet but I'm thinking if you just got a filter for the pcv valve on the driver side and capped off the cold air intake port, you can probably get the box back in and just have the brake booster line move wherever you need it since it's rubber
@@sKoutzyy yea that's an idea. Or find some hose to fit over the hard pipe and make an extension after cutting the pipe I have the pass side Ford Oil/Air separator on now and also have the drivers side GT500 Oil/Air separator which isn't yet installed. Since that pipe is now 2, I may have more flexibility. My concern was ppl saying the only CAI to get to fit was the JLT and Roush was impossible to do. For that reason (I already have Roush), I was leaning towards 18+GT intake over Boss302
@@mikz86ta1 the gt350 intake is almost the same install, and I'm pretty sure you can utilize the IMRC controls still, not 100% sure on that though. I've heard good things so either would be a good upgrade. Honestly with technology advancement if you don't already have this intake I'd go gt350 intake or the 18 manifold. 18 manifold i believe still has basically the same angle coming out of the throttle body as the old truck one. But roush will work. I think most will, it's just the way it puts the angle initially and the lack of using the box without any modifications. Yeah the JLT has a kit made specifically for it, but they overdramatized that price because it's part specific for this intake, this roush still works for me so if it saves some money that's good.
It costed me 185 for 3 tunes during a holiday discount on 5 stars site. That included the little extra I had to pay for the tuning for the manifold. And tuners are iffy, I'm pretty sure they need to be unlinked to one of the cars they're tuned into in order to link to yours, but I'm pretty sure they can't be unlinked without going back to the stock tune. I don't know that for a fact but I think that's how they prevent the tuners from being passed around like that. Either that or there's a limit they have
@@D3lphie pretty much but I'd try and find out if it can just be tuned, because if I unplug my tuner it's still there, but I don't know how many cars you can marry to one tuner
You do to remove the codes and get the power out of it. Without tuning the low end torque disappears. It's still drivable but there is a drastic difference with the proper tune for that manifold. 5star has tuning specifically made for it
@@sKoutzyy mines at the dealership rn with aftermarket warranty getting phasers done at 101K but been rattling since 67K lol. Warranty took 2 months to accept the fix they kept complaining but it’s under what they cover which is engine, transmission, and differential. Should get it back in a couple weeks. I got the 18GT manifold, lost like 50 pounds of TQ but gained it up top so just depends what you like. 1/8 or 1/4 I used to gap tuned V8 Camaros and 5.0s to the 1/8 before Gt manifold lol but now it’s a little closer up top
@@carlife_710 how much were you quoted for them to do them? Contemplating just pawning my issue off on someone with a lift who won't get annoyed every 3 seconds like me lol
And you also have to take in account that the engines compression ratio and cams are much different than a mustang engine. The truck engines were made for more low end torque and you can only push it so far. It's definitely fun to drive around with this thing, but it's not a completely crazy change either
Running good. Mileage is about 16 to 17 with a 3 inch lift and 35s and an economy tune. Performance tune wasn't far off in mileage but every mile counts for me atm
It has options for all of that but I am in economy mode. In performance mode I've had it up there a bit, not 7400 though because I just don't trust my motor
@@jobbi9336 not too bad, but definitely need a timing chain very soon, 183k miles. Almost time for an actual rebuild with more performance upgrades. Just need to start piecing things together
