( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2015 Lincoln Navigator and the 2015 GMC Yukon Denali are two 7 to 8 passenger luxury SUV's are are built on their pickup truck siblings. In this TFLtruck towing test video we load both of these trucks to their max and floor it up the extreme and grueling Ike Gauntlet torture test review.
It is a 3.5L ecoBoost V6 vs a 6.2L V8. Next up in part 2 is the GMC. How does it tow at extreme elevations. Watch this video to find out.
The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado.

This just proves how the ecoboost isn't anymore efficient then a V8. I mean a motor that is half the size got worst mpg lol. Lots of people are saying the future is here but not so sure about that. From a reliability standpoint the big 6.2l will most likely last forever lol. Great video guys really love your reviews and Mr.truck in the trailer was hilarious :)

when ford gets the 10 speed from the new raptor it will be better .7 mpg is not much 3.6 vs 4.2 he got 4.3 after they hit tunnel he let of
@coureurdebois
@coureurdebois 9 лет назад
Kubeanie Gaming that 6.2L in the GMC is smaller, lighter, more efficient (when towing), and more compact than that 3.5l ecoboost. just because the liter size is larger does not mean its a larger engine. like i said its smaller then the ecoboost in this review :)

Seems to show that the Ecoboost works harder under load, which kind of makes sense doesn't it?
@notasolution
@notasolution 9 лет назад
Just the fact that an engine half the size could even keep up with let alone out perform this big v8 is insane. One mpg less... I think I could live with that. Yes the future is here, a 3.5 liter will easily outperform a massive brand new v8.
@arbiter1
@arbiter1 9 лет назад
1guyin10 Most to do the air, they test in the mountains where the air is thinner. Ecoboost engine being turbo charged, has less effect on those cause the air being compressed and forced in to the engine. Where as the v8 well loses more of its power the higher they go yet it still keeping well .

Everyone needs to understand that with an 8 speed transmission, the vehicle will gear "hunt" or shift more. Think about it...8 gears is a lot of gears to move between considering most vehicles only have 4 to 6 gears. Anyway awesome video as always! That GMC looks beautiful.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 5 лет назад
In the real world you'd have it down in manual 6th going up grades like that in the first place...given the way they test the vehicles the Yukon did great.

Its funny how that 6.2L in the GMC is smaller, lighter, more efficient, and more compact than that 3.5l ecoboost even when the gmc is in its XL trim... looks like a clear winner here.

06RedfireGT the current version of the Chevy 6.2 is newer than the ecoboost. All new technology can have minor risks and problems along the way. Chevy had problems with the lifters and oil consumption when AMF first came. Ford had the intercooler condensation problem. Both sucked for early adopters but eventually got fixed. Who's to say one technology is inherently more risk than another. Both manufactures engines are way different then what they were using 10 yrs ago so neither is proven.

The Fast Lane Truck Politics are inescapable; they're part of every facet of our lives, being that they are the underlying way to describe man's relationship with himself and with one another. There are certainly politics involved between American and non-American makes, gas engines, diesel engines, and hybrids, big cars and small cars, and their respective manufacturing policies/locations, unions/non-unions, taxes, safety standards, corporate fiscal health, and efficiency standards. I think we can safely say this, however: At TFL we all share something in common: Despite the 'political' stereotypes attached to many things automotive, we all agree that we a) want car companies to do well/succeed in the marketplace, continually wowing us with their beauty, technology, capability, and value, and b) love our freedom and opportunity in the USA to drive and own all the types of vehicles featured on this channel, new and old, big and small, fast and slow, efficient and inefficient. It is truly in this diversity where all types of vehicles are welcome to come out and play that we thrive as a RU-vid community. If only as humanity we were able to unite in the same way. But hey, maybe down the road (pun intended) that will be possible again.... Until then, I'm glad to be here where we can all at least unite on our love for all things automotive.

so the Yukon cost less (this is the XL does not compete), has a interior is nicer and more premium than the navigators (as they stated), the yukon offers magnetic ride, and it offers a more fuel efficient N/A V8 under load even at altitude that sounds badass, need i say more?

I'm fascinated that the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade do not include integrated brake controller, when their lower-end stablemates (Ford Expedition and Yukon/Tahoe/Suburban) can be equipped with the integrated brake controller. Very odd spec decision.
@coureurdebois
@coureurdebois 8 лет назад
1st off the Escalade does not compete with the Lincoln, the cadillac is a level above the Lincoln, 2nd most people tend not to take their 80K - 90K towing, something like 15% of people tow with luxury SUV's, so i assume GM and Ford focus their towing options are SUV's and Trucks that people tend to tow more with (like the more pleb versions)

I had 3 Expeditions and I finally got a GMC Yukon Denali 2016. And lemme tell u, only 2 complaints. But huge ones. The seats are like rocks and ur head doesn't even hit the head rest cuz it's too far back. And the third row is for 9 year old. U aren't getting adults in there for anything more than a 15 minute ride. Expedition had some serious comfort and the third row was the most comfortable seat in the truck.

@foolongtea

Things to remeber folks, this is the XL denali not the short one like the Navigator. You also have to remeber altitude. The 6.2 turns into a 5.0 engine whilst dealing with these high altitudes, the 3.5 (7.2L at full boost) doesn't experience the same affect and maintains it's efficiency. The 8 speed has also proven itself to only aid in driveability and doesn't increase fuel economy.

Larry Smith my ecoboost runs great. The dealer recommends bringing them in every 30k to have a cleaning service done on the intake valves, which is a minor annoyance, but not a big deal at all.
@larrysmith6797
@larrysmith6797 7 лет назад
89Hols I think your dealer is full of shit. Ford Motor Company hasn't come up with an official way to clean those intake manifolds. That last official FoMoCo ecoboost intake manifold fouling solution was a replacement (fine until the warranty runs out). Unless your dealer can show you a Ford Technical Service Bulletin outlining the procedure, you're getting SCAMMED. Have the dealer change your blinker fluid, too.
@89Hols
@89Hols 7 лет назад
Larry Smith actually they did show me the Ford TSB. They have a machine that hooks to the intake and cycles a detergent throughout the engine as it runs for 1 hour. Then they fill the fuel tank, and put in a bottle of BG carbon cleaner. Good try attempting to sound like you know what your talking about though.

justin bouche Just to be clear according to the TFL write up the Navi is 60 pounds heavier than the GMC. The slower traffic did slow him down but on the flip side he was speeding at the start of the hill. The built in trailer brake means they know you are not going to tow with it. I don't think ford figures anyone is going to pull with the navi and thats why they didn't put a trailer brake in it.

I've owned both of these SUV's as well as Ford Super Duty's and full size GM trucks. The fact of the matter is I've always had a far more enjoyable & dependable longterm experience from GM trucks versus Ford. This is not a biased opinion, but, rather a fact based on actual ownership. Don't get me wrong, I'm very impressed by the EcoBoost's performance; in all of it's various varieties. But I'll be even more impressed if they're able to sustain the rigors of long haul use and ownership; without becoming too costly to keep and maintain. That has not been my experience with Ford & Lincoln products thus far.

All that they would need to do is update the interior and slightly change the exterior to compete with today's full sized suv's. From all the reviews I've read, it was an extremely reliable truck and was a great bang for your buck. I really liked the old aspens and I think they would sell like crazy if Chrysler brought them back... and kept the hemi of course lol.

Ok guys, the reason you don't want an 8 speed with the turbo engine is simply because of the nature of a turbo engine. A wider powerband with longer pull is what you would want on the Lincoln. The 6 speed is the right choice for the engine style. The 8 speed is probably necessary with a large N/A V8 and a narrower powerband.

Yep. I saw the news on it. Probably for fuel economy purposes. I was referring directly to pulling power alone. It makes sense for OEM's to want to maximize both, but if you'll note, most tow/haul modes hold gears for longer periods of time, when economy is not the major factor. I was simply saying that it's strictly "not needed" for pulling power. That's all.

Only way big truck SUVs like the Denali get better gas mileage is to add more gears to the transmission, thus the new 2015i models (Escalade and Yukon Denali) come standard with 8 speed.
@tomsmythe4903
@tomsmythe4903 4 года назад
There are a few comments in part 1 and part 2 that tell us the Navigator did better than the Denali in time up the hill, engine braking down the hill, was quieter inside, and rode much smoother than the Denali. Yet, even after winning in every category, the Denali is declared winner based on a fuel computer reading? I know GM products fuel economy computers are "generous". IF we actually want to know real MPG up/down the gauntlet, then we should be starting with full tanks and filling them to full again when done to compute fuel economy. Based on other tests over longer runs (up to 100 miles), the simple math calculation using real gallons reveals it's all a matter of physics. A vehicle of X size climbing Y distance at Z speed will require a certain horsepower. How that vehicle develops horsepower (3.5l vs 6.2l) is not really relevant so long as the efficiency of each power plant is the same. GM & Ford have put great efforts into efficiency so, we should expect them to be near the peak available from gas engines performing heavy workloads. I would not be surprised were the same test run today using the 10 speed transmissions available in each model that we see less hunting (Denali) and slightly better MPG figures shown in the GM. But, actual MPG is only going to be known if we replace physical fuel in each vehicle when the test is over. I'd suggest we run the test once again, using current model year counterparts, and physically replace the fuel when done to get real MPG vs computer-based guestimates from each vehicle. Oh, and leave prejudice behind and let the data declare the winner.

I think the so called gear hunting was Nathan having to let up and slow down so much! I wish they would also do a test somewhere that didn't favor Turbo's so much! But then with these 2 it looked to me like the Turbo altitude advantage just barely let it sorta keep up.

Ecobeast > 6.2 Ecotec push rod slug LMAO, The 6.2 has 40 HP more and the same torque as the EB and the Yukon is lighter!! That gear hunting would get annoying after awhile, although I think the Yukon looked better and had a better interior. Also what is the gas octane requirement for the 6.2, because if I'm not mistaken the 6.2 in the Silverado calls for premium.
@Navi-eh7bs
@Navi-eh7bs 9 лет назад
Exactly the Danali is a SPORT utility vehicle and the Navigator is a sport UTILITY vehicle. Navigator is more suitable and practical for the work and family duty including long towing trips in comfort. Denali is more show than go.
@Navi-eh7bs
@Navi-eh7bs 9 лет назад
Another very good point. My owners manual for 15 Navi recommends regular gas and that's what use. U can put in premium and ecoboost will adjust (probably a good idea for towing) As far as I can tell online the GMC recommends premium but maybe it can go lower octane too ...idk.

Navi15 If the bigger, heavier GMC handled the load just as well (the slowdowns were due to traffic; they said more than once the 6.2 would accelerate at will), had the additional towing controls the Lincoln did not, and got better MPG, how is it "all show"?
@Navi-eh7bs
@Navi-eh7bs 9 лет назад
SurelyYewJest Good point on the trailer break although they said in the video for the load they were towing with the engine breaking and transmission gear holding the Navigator didn't really need one. They both do a great job towing I just think the Denali ' s overall styling favors form over function with the relative poor visibility and that Navigator does everything the Denali can do all while providing a more luxurious and Comfortable ride which makes it a better value. The GMC is more geared for gas mileage so I think the Navigator L which comes standard with 4.11 gears and load leveling rear dampers would be a better comparison size, purpose, and equipment-wise. Who cares about less than a mile per gallon difference when towing? That's a wash when you are talking less than 5 mpg for both vehicles. It's about performance, ride and utility

So the longer, heavier GMC without turbos got better MPG and a similar tow time as the shorter, (possibly) lighter Lincoln with turbos that should have helped the V6 breathe better at high altitude. I'd imagine the Navigator L would have been slightly worse on MPG than the standard wheel base model, giving that much more advantage to the GMC, on top of the fact that the Lincoln has no trailer controls. The EcoBoost claims are tending not not to work out unless you are drag racing.
@Navi-eh7bs
@Navi-eh7bs 9 лет назад
I wouldn't count on it. Fist of all the L is properly set up for towing with 4.11 gears and rear load leveling suspension. It would be a little heavier but I'll bet the gears and suspension more than make up for it. These guys tested the version of the Navigator meant for luxury (active dampers instead of load leveling ones standard on the L) that's not really. The difference is gas mileage while towing is small it's ridiculous. (They both get terrible mileage when like any other truck) Capability is what matters and the navi L would out class the Denali in all the important aspects ( comfort and quiet while pulling the load with less effort)

I loved the series, great job guys at TFL, this was a near perfect comparison! I can't decide which truck I'd rather have. I really dig that GMC interior and the 6.2 engine sound. However, I don't like how it has to hunt for gears, considering it has an 8 speed auto. What's up with that? As for the Navigator, I don't have anything really negative to say. I don't like how it squatted down with the extra tongue weight on the back, though.

Why the constant complaining about the GM integrated brake controller being on the left side? It's been that way for years because there really isn't a convenient place to have it on the right side. The 3.42 ratio with the 8-speed is almost equal to 4.10's in the old GM 4-speed if you do the math. Very good choice of gear for towing. The Suburban & Yukon Denali are not the same. The Denali trim level is much nicer than the LTZ Suburban. Only GM interior about the same is the High Country. Then you have this goofball Mr. Truck talking about the Silverado with identical engine and transmission but "wrong mapping" , WTF is he trying to say with that one? The vehicles are going to shift different based on total weight, and they do not weigh the same. Now he has the entire crew saying grade shifting! The proper term per the manufacturer is "grade braking". You may want to reread the brochure. The GM cylinder deactivation goes from 8 to 4cyl, there is no 6cyl mode on these vehicles. These reviews are getting really difficult to watch.
