( www.TFLtruck.com ) The 2013 Toyota Tundra Pickup is built to tow. But is it better than the Ford F-150 and the brand new Chevy Silverado? We decided to find out by putting all three pickups up against each other in a Mega Mashup by having them tow the old Lincoln Continental Mark V Diamond in the Rough up one of the steepest and highest American Highways. From Dillion, Colorado to the Eisenhower Tunnel U.S. I-70 climbs 8 miles to a maximum elevation of 11,158 feet or 3,401 meters. That's enough elevation and grade to test the most powerful of pickups. Is the Toyota Tundra up to the task of towing a over 7,000 pounds up to the top of the tunnel?
In fact according to Toyota this pickup can tow up to 9,000 pounds. That's enough weight to need a commercial truckers license in most states. In this first TFLtruck Ike Gauntlet video review we test the truck up the Ike Gauntlet see how fast it will tow over 7,000 pounds of old American Luxury car 8 miles up a 7 percent grade to the Eisenhower tunnel with the help of our friend Kent from ( www.MrTruck.com ).

1-800-beatdown .....we got our first tundra 2 years ago. We own and operate a construction business. Today, we now have 3 tundras in our family. We have gotten rid of every other vehicle. I drive a 2013 crewmax 5.7, my son drive a 2012 extended cab 5.7, wife drives a 2017 crewmax 5.7. Fantastic trucks. And we have literally owned every other brand....gmc, chevy, ford, nissan, ram. My second favorite after tundra was the ram

Most people that talk shit about Toyota have either never driven one or just assume because the logo is from Japan. Chevy is very much overrated. Ford is decent compared to Chevy. Through my experience, Toyota has it all the way. The fuel efficiency isn't the greatest but most people who buy a truck wouldn't really care. It has a perfect balance of horsepower and a surprising amount of torque with a beautiful ride. If ya want something real... Get a Toyota.

My dad owns a 2008 Tundra and my truck is his old F-150 and it's only got about 200 HP. First time I drove the Tundra, with 381 HP, I thought I was gonna die from that enormous torque. Almost literally scared the shit out of me.

FMChimera Well I think you should run for office somewhere and you have done it all, no disrespect. My experience in engineering and construction for half ton work the toyota has personally done better then chevy and ford, which I owned. By dollars of maintenance and repair (other then my fault) has been extremely lower then both previous. The 4x4 and towing feel/power is extremely better. My company leases fords because they are cheap and like you said much bigger trucks. They do the job yes, would I ever personally own on again? maybe but my tundra has been the "best" by trial so far. My father was a ford man, no matter what, I learned how to work on motors and trucks because of ford. I have nothing against them all they are all getting very nice. I do have 113,000 k miles on a 2009 and am not looking into a new truck like previous

funny thing is the tundra is more american then the other trucks and the only truck that actually meets its standards. yet it still get all the hate. people need to educate themselves before they attack just because its a foreign vehicle. who gives a fuck if its "foreign" id rather spend my money on something thats going to last other then "stimulating" the economy. fuck the economy, I'm not going to make a shitty purchase with my hard earned money just to help the government that already takes most of it.

Look at the wiring that chevy uses, then look at the wiring toyota uses. The quality is on another level. I lost all faith in american vehicles and trucks after my 2004 trailblazer which was a good truck but it got totaled so we got the money and bought a 2004 toyota 4runner....the trailblazer had a slipping transmission, back windows didnt work, the left turn signal would go out every other week (would carry spares) Headlights would go out for no apparent reason, keyless entry would stop working because the security unit would short out, and most of the buttons on the stereo and hvac were falling off or wouldnt work. The 4runner on the other hand had 0 issues everything worked and it worked flawlessly. Also had 50k more miles and ran like it was new. I say GM, and Chrysler need to go under for making such shit vehicles, fords are decent but no where near the toyotas. Im in the market for a used tundra and hopefully I buy one in the next few weeks. TOYOTA all the way.

just today i tested 3 2014/15 Toyota Tundras one base model 5.7, base 4.6 and a 4.6 with a cat back exhaust and cone filter from K&N, there trucks weigh in at 12500 pounds because they are armored, breaks wise they preform alot better than the 2015 Ford F550 armored as well i can give the 0-60 average time that i got from doing 6 runs on each truck and the numbers are alot better than we got with the ford but the ford is 4000 pounds heavier but its a 550 and this is a tundra.... so 5.7 did 13.76 the stock 4.6 17.98 and 4.6 with mods 16.68 the ford is around 21 seconds and the breaks start showing major fatigue after the 3 run where the Toyota did show any even after the 6th, also keep in mind the toyota right now is 4500 pounds over GVWR and the ford is 3000 pounds under..... so yes the Toyota is a better truck.....

I've never owned or driven a full-sized pickup truck. If I had to choose any of the three pickup trucks, I'd take either the Toyota Tundra or the Chevy Silverado. Being a Toyota owner my whole adult life, I'd take the Tundra. My only gripe with the Tundra is its lack of a turbocharged/intercooled diesel engine. You can get a Ford F250 with a diesel engine, and you can get a Chevy C2500 with a Duramax turbo diesel. But no Tundra with a diesel, not at any price.

Hi Brian, Thanks for your comment. Just to be clear only the Ford F-150 was able to maintain the 60 MPH speed limit. Pulling over 8000 pounds at over 10,0000 feet above sea level up a 7 percent grade is not easy. The other trucks struggled and took different amounts of time to finish the Ike Gauntlet. Perhaps you missed this important fact and the entire point of the series and the Gauntlet.

by the way yall are wrong on the ratio it has nothing to do with the engine, axle gear ratio is between the pinion shaft to the ring gear so basicly its the diference in rotaion of the driveshaft to the axles that go out to the wheels. Im not trying to be picky but just getting the right info out there. keep up the good work.

Oh....there was a article on Western horseman where they tested a Ford, Chevy, Dodge and a Tundra towing a 3 horse slant trailer from Death valley to the summit of the Sierra mtns. And the Tundra won the towing. The 1st to give out was the Ford. Metric motor cycles out last and out do Harley's to. Just stating facts.

It helps to know that the old Tundras that were smaller than todays Tundra and was a 1/2 ton pickup. Todays new full size tundras are actually 3/4 ton pickup. But not an HD. I am impressed by Toyotas electronics. And also glad to see Toyota got some HP out of that GM block. 350 is definitely my choose of V8 engine.

I love my Tundra, we pull a 6,000 + lbs camp-trailer setup, living in north west mountains. We've pulled in high winds, treacherous storms, ugly 4x4 dirt roads and 85 mph when passing semi trucks pulling scarey triples in the flatlands. It's been awesome small package and we goes where most people can't get a camp trailer. Yup, I'm getting to trust my Tundra Pro more more on every trip we take. But I still need's three 5 gallon gas cans in the back of the truck, lol. It's been a blast and we are thinking about getting a newer Tundra or a 3/4 ton, it's a dam hard choices to make... Should I wait until 2021 and see what Toyota is going to do....?

But I thought Dodge Rams and Ford 150s were made in Canada and Chevy/GMCs in Mexico??? Tundras are made in Texas. I'm confused. Tundras are made by Americans in America as are Titans. Do you mean buy an American based company?

El Taco So let's see, because it's aluminum that makes you think it isn't as tough, and the new 5.0 makes 385 HP. So go figure, dude...
@eltaco1959
@eltaco1959 9 лет назад
That One Ford Guy Thanks for not going off on my earlier comment. It didn't exactly come out the way I had intended it to sound like. First thing steel is stronger than aluminum and that's a fact no questions asked; in order for the aluminum to be harder they would have to heat treated but that would make no sense to the ford engineers as they want weight savings and performance gains. The most important thing to correct is the fact that what I meant to say was that Ford praise there Ecoboost engines so much that they have not given the consumer even better performance numbers than it already has for their V8 engine. This is why before this year's model Tfl Truck hasn't done an ike gauntlet for the 5.0 ; even with the weight savings if you put it against the other V8 competitors we would see the real competition. I'm not gonna be one of those people that say ford cheats with turbos ( turbos / reliability a whole other discussion ) but I will say, Ford always like to claim #1 for everything but you put their V8 against other V8' s and they won't be happy. That's what I meant by they can't build a strong " enough " V8. V8' s FTW

Mr. Truck forgot the Ford F250 and 350 can be bought with 4:30 gears with the 6.2L gas. He said only the F450 and Tundra had them. My '13 F250 6.2L CCLB 4x4 has the 3:73s with Elocker. I seems to do ok because of the 6R140 trans that is also used with the diesel, it has enough ratios that I can kick down and maintain speed on Monteagle (7% for a few miles)in TN with 7000#s on a flat hitch. I probibly would have went for 4:30s but none of the dealers even had a truck with them on the lots when it was time to buy.
