I have the XE S for 6 weeks now and it is the most beautiful car I have ever owned. Its handling and performance is sublime and you just get the feeling you are in a 2 seat purely the way the cockpit is built. Its weird because it is also very comfortable too no back aches like the BMW 320 I used to own. It is different league
Yes it is the version with the F-Type engine 338bhp . My running costs riding sensibly are 35-38mpg motorway. 22-26mpg town and mixed is around 27-28 mpg. Sensibly with the XES model is still going around on normal mode and it is very quick. If you pop it into S and adaptive then its like a rocket which wants to take off. To give you a better idea on wet surface you cannot drive it in normal because it will just doughnut on you. It's an amazing car.
+Nick De Martino I am considering purchasing EITHER this car which I have tested in wet road conditions and as you say it slips from the back alot. OR the 3 litre s4 Audi quatro which will not slip in such a manner. The xe has 8000 miles on clock fully specked priced £42ooo 6 months old. The Audi has 80 miles on clock registered 6 months very good spec priced £35500. Aftre owning the jag faced with this choice which would you choose? Advice appreciated
+fizywig I love everything about my car and my decision would always be the XE S purely because the car is everything a driver wants from a sports sedan . However you cannot ignore the fact that the S4 is also an amazing car and comes at 6.5K cheaper and with 7920 miles less on the clock. The truth is that they are two amazing cars and ultimately the decision comes down to the individual and what are there priorities in terms of spec vs money plus what done it for me is that it is a new model on the road not another face lift. So here are my pro`s and cons after owning it for 6 months: Pro`s Great Ride and very direct steering Seating position is fantastic its like being in a two seater. PowerfulSupercharged engine which delivers some great performance Amazing sounds when the Supercharged kicks in.Amazing looks (trust me I park next to great cars every day and people look at mine) Good overall mpg. Negative Sat Nav not great in fact I feel very let down by this. Not very spacious sitting in the back seats.Meridian Stereo not the best. Noisy ride because of its wheels and engine sound.
Had one for 3 months with my job and it is fantastic. I got it brand new and once the engine wears in after around 1500 miles it got much better. Lovely machine and they are very good on diesel.
Great to hear that the Jag can cut it and beat the best of the competition. Well done to all at JLR for producing such a fantastic product. What with the diesel scandal at the moment, it's great to see that this British designed and built car could give our German friends a bit of a run for their money. keep up the good work JLR!!!
Just Brought an XE R Sports 2.0 Litre Turbo Petrol 2016 with 23,375 miles on clock I’m looking forward to experiencing the Jaguar 🐆🇬🇧 XE Driving Experience 😉😊😊👍🏻
I have a petrol 2017 XE R Sport AWD 25T. It's an excellent car and competes very well with my 3 litre XF which I will soon have to reluctantly part with. The XE has 19" black alloys and black side badges along with two tone red/black leather seats. I have only driven it for a 1000 miles or so but already know it's a keeper! Previous owner wisely bought an emergency spare wheel pack and replaced the boot carpet as was necessary. Far better than the rubbish squirty bottle of foam stuff they have as standard!
Well done Patricia, it's good to know that your supporting British industry. I dumped my Merc and brought an F TYPE, would never buy another German car as long as I live. 😊
I just had one for a loaner car from Jaguar. I have 201 XJ Super Sports . I can't compare 510hp with 340hp but its a great little car. I noticed it right away. That's way I am here, checking on the XE. I am not looking to trade in but Jaguar has a big hit here.
Hi guy Your review is very good and for a change an English guy who doesn’t prefer the German cars compare to Jaguar.... very good! I am French and I just bought an xe 2.0 D 180 cv AWD 8 auto gears... I will get it on Saturday and will enjoy a lot cheers
Nice review, this car has just appeared on our new company car list. Always gone 3 Series before but seriously tempted by this car now. Will certainly be test driving one.
***** I've read of issues on forums. Specifically, the pop-up gear selector was stuck in park on a XF, so in order to put it in neutral so it could be towed, the owner had to find some complicated mechanism located under the arm rest. I don't think it's a wide-spread issue, but it happened. I don't like when manufacturers do gimmicky things like pop-up speakers, etc. It will break and it will be expensive to fix. CarandDriver magazine did a long-term test with the F-type, and the stupid pop-up vent stopped popping up. It cost almost a thousand to fix. It's unnecessary. They should have used the joy-stick looking gear selector from the F-type. I've never liked the pop-up gear selector.
+chigasaki06 I read on forums about BMW diesel engines suffering from timing chains breaking reducing the engine to scrap. All cars have some faults the latest Jags very few.
Im awaiting delivery of my used 2016 XE (180) r-sport, which is loaded with extras. After 3 used Xf`s this will be a refreshing change. I'm smitten with Jaguars.
Fantastic review, I am getting a 2017 XE R Sport next week from the company car pool, as soon as I saw it i grabbed it as i didn't want to end up with a mini clubman! The positives far out weight the negatives as the vast majority of the time I am in the car alone. The rear view can't be any worse than the Range Rover Evoque I have at the moment. I have to keep it for a year before i can choose a new company car. My only concern will be its build quality as the Range Rover has been a shocker!
Lovely car. Though tad worried on reliability. Im in a D5 volvo at moment arguably one if the finest oil burners going! Do i swap solid reliability, durability/safety!? For looks and drive .
Why would you say this? You don't even know this kid or his situation. There are many wealthy young people in the World these days who could easily buy a $45K car. Maybe he insherited money, maybe he's a business owner, maybe he his dad is rich, maybe he won a law suit. I see young kids out cruising in $100K cars. You just never know about people. I do find it funny when someone has to tell you their age in the same sentence as they tell you what kind of car they drive. It does lend less credibility to the story.
Hmmm the Americans say the Cadillac ATS is best in class, but the British say the Jaguar XE is best in class. Would love to see a comparison of the two from an unbiased source.
We don't say that...a small minority who are very loud say that....our most popular magazines (caranddriver and motorweek) still choose the bmw over the caddy...it's good but not perfect tranny (gearbox) is very sloppy
Sorry to say this (or maybe not) but American cars are just crap on weels. A comparison to German cars is like putting the English Premier League or German Bundesliga at the same Level as a local small town football team. Just look at the sales figures of American cars in Germany. Nobody buys that Gringo shit. I have driven BMW and Audi during the last 10 years but must admit that the XE is a great car. I tried it several times and decided to buy one. Will get it tomorrow at Berlin... (Diesel, 163 PS, manual gear).
It may be an idea when reviewing cars like this to show yourself sat in the back, with the drivers seat positioned where you would normally have it. Apart from that, it was a good review. Thanks.
Does it have CD player. My friend gear would not rise one day he took to Jaguar to get it fixed the cost was crazy. It is beautiful car but it’s very expensive to repair.
+Lewis Harley You can buy a 316d in M-guise... R-Sport is just one of the trims and it gives the XE a more sporty look + sports seats, sports steering wheel and sports suspension.
My issue is that it's clone of the XF almost inside and out....this should've been a standout car, considering what's at stake....I'm confused about its weight though. It's almost 200lbs heavier than the 3 series but use all this expensive aluminum, which I'm sure will be very expensive to insure and repair, in fact some shops won't even touch it
Well Audi is more reliable than BMW in my opinion because they share the same genes as VW, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche...so if there is a technical improvement in those 3 brands Audi will also do well.
When I'm able, my mg3 will be swapped for a jaguar XE- they have deappreciated well making some bargain pcp deals. I'll always pick a jag over any German car..theres always somthing special owning a jag that you dont get elsewhere.
Have you seen the thing that lets the back seats fold down? It's like something in hospital if you press if you want to let a bit more meds into your drip! It's ridiculous.
Trust me Ryan when you see it in flesh and drive it this car will put a huge smile on your face and the passenger next to you. I hope you enjoy it just as I am.
Oh ddear and no one bought one! They're gonna go bust unless they get bought. I know Top Gear and Clarkson are cruel but he think he hit the nail on the proverbial when he said "The new Jaguar XF, it reminds everyone so much of a BMW that they went out and bought... a BMW!" Sorry, mate but that's about the size of it...
no doubt it is handsome car and a nice alternative luxury brand if you don't want to go to a Toyota with carpet and leather (Lexus - I know it's a lot better than Toyota - never the less to my eyes it's just a Toyota) however here in Canada the reliability of Jaguars and Land Rovers are horrible... so still no thanks
This is all well and good, ...BUT is this going to be as good as the New MUSTANG ???? I think not. The Stang will be more fun to drive. The American cars are going to be a very viable option too. What do other people think.
+littlehenham What? The Mustang isn't even in the same segment as this car. Mustang = Coupe. XE = Saloon. Those looking at a Mustang are not the same customers who are looking at the Jag.
+littlehenham Jaguar is a luxury brand, the new XE is a luxury sport sedan competing with BMW 3/Audi A4, mustang is a affordable sport car unless you get to the higher trim(GT350/500). You are talking about the wrong class lol, a more comparable american car would be like a Cadillac ATS.
+Graeme Heydenrych I do agree that sometimes it seems a bit false. Those sorts of cars are aimed at those who want the styling but would rather have something they could use everyday. Think Mercedes one is called AMG-Line?
my neybor has one and I've seen it for a week now and I'm already bored with the looks. I'm sure it's a great car to drive, but i still prefer the 3 series. I see it like that : the moment that jaguar made it to make a good normal car BMW already sels cars like the i8 witch is 10 years ahead jaguar. And in like a few months BMW will start selling the 330e and then ? what jaguar will do ? cry ?
+Andrei Arama The 3 series is just a bland 3 box saloon. The Jag is miles more stylish. BMW have the i8 & Jag have the F type. Not cars competing in the the XE sector. The 330e is a nice try but no use for most with only a 25mile range on electric and it is still bland. Lexus already make better Hybrids than BMW.
Too right !!!! it's about time the people of the UK brought British and stopped buying German box's. All you Audi, BMW and Merc drivers should hang your heads in shame as you are killing off a great British brand. Rule Britannia !!! ☺
Rubbish. BMW still wins especially with the new engines fitted. You cannot say that a car that weights more, costs more, worse economy, has a smaller boot & smaller rear seats can win.
