This reminds me of those classic informational shows from the 20s, 30s and 40s that are floating around here on RU-vid in the sense that everything is laid out simply and straightforward. Well done, I really want a V now
what a car! I cannot express how dam desirable that cts V is to me! It not only steps clearly into amg /M territory, it obliterated them with bang for the buck. It makes the sentiment "Buy American" feel proud and powerful! I hope they sell more than they can make by a lot..!
About the most fun car I have driven or owned. Never thought I would like owning a car more than the Porsche Turbo. This thing kicks ass and handles awesome. The stock Michelins just do burnouts. You want Michelin Pilot Sport Cup II tires and it will beat Hellcats all day long. The car really hooks up and 90% of the crazy wheel spin is eliminated with Cup tires. Take it from someone who always drives with the traction control off. The Pilot Sport Cup II tires make the car a lot more fun, faster and safe.
😎I remember years ago looking at this video when searching for my CTS-V3 and im still watching this video today even after owning my own CTS-V3. Gotta love Cadillac💯
Thank you Cadillac i have had the 05 CTS V and am now the proud owner of a 2018 CTS V and let me tell you the difference between 05 and the 2018 is night and day. God bless these clever engineers.
I've driven the CST V on the track at a Cadillac event. The car is awesome. However, why no automatic folding outside mirrors? This feature is on many Cadillac competitors. A car great shouldn't skimp on this feature.
As Doctor No (not that one) & The Chemical Bro so eloquently put it: "Time To Drop Some Knowledge On That Ass" Honest, Informative & Always straight to the point... The Mad Scientist never disappoints! Got to learn a lot about the V's mechanical bits & looking forward to the Q&A episode.... Thanks M! Hope Dave comes back for a Part IV with the CT6 later this year ... New engine, AWS, incredible amount of weight reduction (for its size), its gonna be a juicy one
My car has what I call The Staccato Affect i.e a shuddering and rough gear changes and its under ten grand in miles, am aware of the SB and the fix. Is this going to be a recurring issue or will the fix rectify the issue, the car is fantastic by the way and thank you for your help.
E63 does not have the DCT transmission. It has the MCT, which is the transmission without torque converter replaced by the wet clutch. In S+/M this transmission has shifting times of 100 ms. The fastest DCT's today have shifting times as fast as 60ms, so Caddy's transmission can not be compared with them.
Great presentation. I have to admit, you have encompassed this in a way that spotlights the refinements of this vehicle. To trim some fat.. carbon fiber sounds great to the ears but doesn’t appeal to our wallets. The particular pieces involved can easily be customized to visually appear to be “real” for a fraction of the price. Innovation now a days let us change, motify and personalize like never before. I’d hate to foot the cost of the fuel over..great looking vehicle.. esp with the white. I guess this is how we’re trying to make.American Great again.👍🏻
The view car on it's side does not have the Splitter, but standard spoiler. My question is: Will the Splitter hinder the air flow Dave is referring too? I drove the ATS-V first but having driven the CTS-V I feel it's more comfortable, therfore, I am leaning towards the CTS-V and really love the look of that front splitter, hince my concern of air flow. Thanks
Amazing technical information. If not, every car make should be doing these types of reviews to give potential buyers the reasons behind the decisions. Thank you MotoMan and Dave Leone!
STI555 Yes, it is very fast. CTS-V was the fastest sedan in the world, and it may very well still be. The Tesla can't exceed 145mph whereas the Cadillac will hit 200
If they're not going to offer it with a manual transmission, they should offer a manual transmission swap kit through GM performance parts. If they made a kit that contained everything needed for the swap, I guarantee they would sell some. Plus people doing a manual swap in other similar cars or custom cars could also use some, if not all, parts of the swap kit.
Wet sump has 10 quarts though, what would a comparable dry sump require? Sounds like he had an internal battle with someone that wanted a dry sump and he won and wanted to prove it. There is a reason real race cars use a dry sump. However, there are trade-offs, it is okay to admit that you didn't need or want to go to that extreme. There are always trade-offs and and there isn't one right or wrong answer.
Articulately explained: 1. Why no manual (not enough people buy manual to justify the development cost) 2. Why no DCT (auto is smoother and can achieve similar shift times) 3. Why no AWD (an extra 200 lbs on the front wheels will affect handling in a negative way) There's hope for AWD when they build a wagon because the added weight in the back will allow for the inclusion of AWD to bring the car back to a 50/50 weigh distribution. By that time the 8-speed auto will be even better. RIP manual.
NIAtoolkit But at one point he says "Every gram matters." Then they go with the biggest STEEL brake rotors in the business. Doesn't he know that that adds 50-60 pounds to the car? Not to mention 12-15 pounds of unsprung weight at each corner. Another thing... Which would you think is heavier. Having to haul around a 19" spare wheel and tire or Run Flats all around?
+NIAtoolkit The handling excuse is complete 100% bullshit, regarding AWD. Go through the list of ultra high performance cars using AWD and then come back and tell me AWD causes handling issues. I mean seriously, has anybody at GM ever heard of an Aventador?
The problem with All wheel drive is that if you go out thte parameters of the cars suspension you are left in a loop. The aventador, 918, and other all wheel drive supercars are good for snatching out of a corner but suck when it comes to drastic switches from left to right and right to left. They are all pretty heavy. They need these complex computers to help drivers get the lap times they get and they take away driver involvement. Not to mention the oversteer. The best driving cars are rear wheel drive. Preferrably front engine rear wheel drive.
+Vernon Price Nope. The E63 understeers like crazy. RS7 understeers like crazy. M5 does not, this does not. Pretty easy to understand, and the weight issue is exactly true. Comparing an 85k sedan to a 400k+ supercar...good idea....
The way that the tires are designed with 3 different materials and patterns, am I correct in assuming that you wouldn't rotate the tires because it would mess up the patch to the ground made by the tires?
With the carbon fiber panels on the underside of the car, are there special lift attachment points so that the panels are not damaged when you put the car on a lift?
This "Chief Engineer", The only thing that's stopping me from getting the CTS-V is that shitty ass transmission that they use in the Yukon and all other trucks. The paddles feel shitty and the transmission is slow, slower than AMGs MCT and slower than BMWs DCT. Still don't know how he's praising it. Why did they use the DCT in the C8 and Camaro, full of shit
I'm enjoying reading the comments of all the "Chief Engineers" posting here that have sat in all the design meetings! Entertaining....however, when a person buys a vehicle of this magnitude I would dare to say the the HP...Torque...Comfort...Gadgets...Looks...and overall long term value is what attracts buyers...Period! Anything more than a person is simply trying to show off their automotive knowledge. Personally...I'm looking at this vehicle, the Audi S8 or RS7. Audi advantage...AWD (Quattro is a beast)....Cadillac Advantage....COST. Any opinions?
Hey Dave a little help, my 2016 V seems to have developed a problem with its belts, for some reason the car Is eating them, chewing them up is how my dealer put it and if the tech working on my cars brakes didn't notice it I'd be in a ditch somewhere's. At this point every belt they put on gets chewed up by the car and no one knows why, so I ask you Dave...WHY?
Agree. This guy is an asset for Cadillac. He is just supercool. Laughed my ass off when he explains about wet vs. dry sump. Message to Lambo and Ferrari taken. Then AMG gets it when he explains the transmission. The brakes is a statement to Porsche and he just continues. This is the kind of confidence that makes you succeed.
phillip I think options like that will come soon probably when Cadillac does the re-up of their interiors and take them to the next level as far as luxury. We will probably see additional luxurious features like soft closing doors, power folding mirrors, etc. Escalade will most likely get them first on it’s refresh which I think will be released 2020. I think Escalade already has folding mirrors. These options can be heavy though and Cadillac will NOT sacrifice the driving dynamics and performance of their cars for the sake of unnecessary bells and whistles. They’re very serious about acquiring the best driving feel/experience on the road. When they implement those type of options across their lineup they will be sure to simultaneously keep their weight down and balance as close to 50/50 as possible. They’re gonna take their time and do it right and the most efficient way so that it doesn’t take away from that Cadillac experience behind the wheel.
Okay I get it, global warming will make all seasons irrelevant but until that time can you get Michelin to make a 295 AS-3 for those of us who live on the upper east side of the country.
Doesn't need those adds. Look at my track videos and you'll see the difference in the auto V vs the manual Z06's. I wish the transmission reacted quicker to the paddles, but the shifting itself is lighting quick.
With the AWD cars like the bens E63 AMG, Audi S6, and soon awd M5, the cts-v should be offered in AWD too. For performance and practicality. Big Luxury sport sedan are made more for practicality, and that would be perfect if an AWD CTS-V is introduced.
bob roger bob roger you’re kidding yourself if you think the new E-class isn’t about performance anymore. Look up the e63 amg s lap time at Nürburgring
Dave Leone - why has Cadillac lowered the lustre of the V brand with the CT5 and CT4 entries? Nerfing the V badge really isn't fooling anyone, and it tarnishes the sensational record of the everything that has carried the V badge prior.
There is going to be a new high performance trim that is going to be the top dog in the Cadillac brand. The V-Series took the place V-Sport trim. I heard that the top performance trim is going to be called Blackwing. So, the Blackwing CT5 and CT4 is going to be crazy fast. Those Blackwings are going to be pushing well over 600 and 700 horsepower. They might be using the 755 horsepower LT5 from that ZR1 Corvette.
+Jon Car I don't think it matters how shiny internal parts look as long as the performance is there. I'd hate to have a car with shiny internal parts that can't even go around a track faster than a car with parts that look like they are from a pickup truck.
Jon Car I agree. People keep saying the CTS-V cost "X" amount less than the M5 and E63 AMG. The more you look, the more you can see where they cut corners. Where else are they cutting corners???
When you do a presentation to American audiences please use inches and feet vs mm: most Americans don't use mm for anything : if you want to be European, do your presentations for that audience
LOL "weight bias is 52.7% front and 42.3% rear"...um there is a few percent missing there. Awesome car even with the mystery weight distribution numbers.
Will the 2016 CTS-V come with all wheel drive at all. I'm from Canada, and the weather we get here is brutal in the spring and winter seasons. I know by having the opinion of all wheel drive will add more weight, but we are willing to live with that. Or you can loose the extra weight from somewhere else. I love this vehicle and I ready to pay the full amount for it, but the AWD is all I ask for. I don't care what other people are saying about the car, like the delay in the gear shift, and the glossy touch pad dash. ( entertainment area, and the CUE). Over all this is a STUNNING vehicle, and amazing to drive in. I would love to drive and own one. So people, appreciate this car and have some respect. Thank you. P.S. this car has the best handling system in the automotive industry.
Well, there are new kinds of AWD, but more electronic based compared to the AWD back in the days where it was really heavy. The one you hear, 4matic, can act as RWD for total performace. When traction is lost, the power is distributed from the rears to the fronts ranging from 35%-50%. New kind of system that improved over time. I don't see much difference between that and the RWD with Stabilitrack that the V has.
It would handle about the same regardless of AWD... all it would do is slow the car down and add extra weight that isn't necessary. It's all in the tires.
I have a black ice (metallic black) CTS now, it looks great, but kind of tired of it. This crystal white frost is very appealing. He said a limited release? Does that mean it may not be available next year?
+DeanBrandon From what I've read online, it's a special color available at launch. Definitely contact a dealership to find out their allocation and if you can get a deposit in on one. That white is a very nice color!
+DeanBrandon yeah matte also needs special care when washing. Since most soaps at the store are made to make car shiny. Matte isn't suppose to be shiny and needs a special kind of soap
Jon Car You just countered your own argument, the car with the the highest top speed is the fastest car. The CTS-V is going to 200MPH over and over again and you can go "insane mode" 10 ten times but have to ease it back to the garage to be charged for hours after an hour or two of fun.
+Jon Car The P85D is not even close to being faster. The P85D only traps maybe 114 mph in the 1/4 mile, the CTS-V traps 126+ mph. Please tell me I don't need to explain that to you. You should immediately recognize the absolutely MASSIVE performance gap there.
I liked everything I heard about the car except the automatic with a torque converter trans. Come on GM leave those in the trucks. Your cars need DCT transmissions. Not every American is a drag racer worrying about up shifts. You can't honestly tell me the down shifts are as nice as a PDK. Granted most buyers won't be tracking their V's much. For the record it's a sweet car and I'd still buy one. Just trying to make it sound like a torque converter trans is better than a DCT in a performance oriented car isn't doing you any favors. Build or source a company that can build the transmission for you and work with them to program the desired feel. You sold your mag ride tech to Ferrari have them help with the transmission. Sounds like you might be in collaboration with the rear diff tech.
Stig Msr Remember though, this is a Cadillac. It has to drive and BE a certain way, otherwise you could just say its some car with 640hp. The rough upshifts of the DCT, like he said, would not suit the Caddy.
sexyitalian891 To me it sounds like a “marketing solution / calculated excuse”. I listened to the transmission part a couple times and noticed that he was very keen to compare it to the Merc with shift feel which recently made the switch to DCT from torque converter trans (I think), so it’s not as refined as others. I have not driven either the new V or Merc mentioned yet but I have tried PDK, plus many VW’s & BMW’s DCT, I didn’t think they were very aggressive in shifting in auto with the exception of the BMW that was tuned but only in the more aggressive settings yet it was smooth in the normal setting. PDK was the smoothest and that might be because of their active motor mounts dampen any shift shock. I also noticed most reviewers have left the GM’s transmission in auto but any DCT on the track they manually shift with the paddles. I don’t know if it’s because it’s just easier having an intelligent conversation while tracking a car not worrying about shifts or if they’re trying to point out how well the car knows the right gear better than the DCT’s auto setting because they never really comment about why they didn’t leave the DCT in auto. With the exception of Chris Harris in the La Ferrari video. On the road he commented how easy it shifts in auto… Yes, the two cars are on different levels but it also shows it can be done and Ferrari knows how. I’m going to drive the new CTS-V for myself at some point to really see but I have my doubts is all I was really saying.
ferrarione22 2 yeah I gave that a pass. If the pan is baffled properly and your primary use is for the street I understand GM not wanting to deal with packaging in the engine bay or consumers bitching about expensive oil changes because they didn't under stand the need for the few extra quarts of synthetic oil. I don't know why they didn't tell it straight like they did with the no manual. Is it because that's what other automaker say so it's allowed? The new CTS-V seems like a really neat car. I enjoyed driving the last generation. The excuses really aren't needed I just hope GM is working hard on a DCT or a contract with a 3rd party. They get so close to the top of their competition I wish the bean counters would just loosen the leash on the engineers just a little more.
ferrarione22 Yeah, he totally contradicts himself. They didn't want a DS system for engine oil, due to the added hoses to go from the engine to the remote sump. Then he says they run fluid from the differential clear to the front of the car, where there's a heat exchanger???? Really???
