CTS-V gets my pick !

Awesome job on the review. To answer your last question: I live in SoCal. I'd take the CTS-V. Reasons: 1. I feel like performance wise the 3rd generation V is in a league above the M5 and the E63. It's now sitting at the big boy's table with the Panamera... and maybe even better than that since it's a smaller car. 2. The V interior and the CUE updates settled any concerns I had about those parts of the car. 3. Living in So Cal there are way too many Bimmers and Mercedes cars on the road. They are like the Camries of the W. Coast. Even M5s and E63s are not rare. The V will actually feel more special and different because it's rarer. 4. MURICA! Nuff said.

I'd take the CTS-V because: 1. It's cheaper... which doesn't seem to sacrifice anything when compared to the E63 and M5. 2. It sounds better than the M5 and perhaps the E63 as well. 3. It has more presence, especially with that grille and front fascia. 4. I live in Northern California where AWD is not a necessity. 5. It just seems like it was built more for driving enthusiasts than the other two. It seems CLOSER to a sports car. The original M5 was very raw but now the Bimmer and the Benz both seem kinda soft. Their designs, their weight, their incommunicative steering, the Benz's all wheel drive, the muffled, not-so-good sounding exhaust note in the M5. The Caddy just seems like a more raw, engaging, passionate driving experience. Again, this is all just based off impressions and reviews because I haven't driven any of these cars. What do you think MotoManTV ? Are my impressions at least partly correct?
@lucasf588
@lucasf588 9 лет назад
Lucas Fanning-Haag MotoManTV oh and of course also because, as TeaSipper mentioned, I also see too many bimmers and benzs (guess that applies to norcal as well). I doubt that even when these CTS-Vs start popping up on the road that they will be as common as the other two. I'd rather drive the car that I don't see as many of on the road.

Lucas Fanning-Haag I am totally agree with you
@ThirdLife86
@ThirdLife86 9 лет назад
Lucas Fanning-Haag So you buy a car to show how cool and underdog you are instead of the features it has ? Does not sound like a fun life :P Its cheaper but it still sacrifices. In terms of choices mostly. Interior variations, Gadgets, AWD, Ceramic Brakes. It sounds better than the M5, but i think thats not difficult as the Bimmer sounds like shit. Better than an AMG ? Hardly. Although it has the potential to sound better after some modifications thanks to no turbos. Presence ? If its about the looks i'd much rather get an RS7 or CLS AMG instead of your average sedan. But as always - tastes differ. :)
@lucasf588
@lucasf588 9 лет назад
+ThirdLife86 i just said, i dont need AWD. i like the interior as is, and carbon ceramics are always unnecessary unless you're constantly thrashing this thing on the track which I wouldn't be doing. And it has great presence without being so compromised like the gran coupes you mentioned that have horrible backseat comfort. have you ever sat in the back of a new cls? its awful. The caddy's got great looks and a nice interior with ROOM and imo a better sounding engine than the M5 and even the E63 which doesnt sound quite as good as it used to since MB ditched the 6.2 NA V8 for the smaller displacement turbocharged one theyve got now. and E63 and M5 both have high quality interiors but the design of both are actually pretty dated. In the case of the E class it and the CLS have the most dated interiors in the MB lineup
@ThirdLife86
@ThirdLife86 9 лет назад
Lucas Fanning-Haag It doesn't matter if you need it. Its about having the option. You also don't NEED 650hp except if you live in Germany where you can actually use it. I own an S5 Sportback and i think the backseats are fine up to 1.85m ish. How can you say the E63 does not sound as good ? Ever heard both live ? Doubt it. The 5.5 still is one of the best sounding modern V8s on the market. Sorry, but nothing in the Video here makes me believe the CTS will sound better. The last one was almost quiet in comparison. The Design of the M5 looks nice, clean and modern. The Design of the CTS could also be used in a Ford Mondeo. So much plastic...ouch. Doesn't fit the styling of the rest of the car. That is modern for you ? Ok. For the E and CLS yes, they do look dated in terms of interior, sadly.

I would definitely go for the CTS V out of the three, because I love the design, the performance, and the Cadillac heritage, not to mention the raw appeal of it being the sort of "wildly talented underdog" of the segment with a cheaper price tag than the competition. I live in the Northeast US and would definitely track this car as a weekend ritual, time and money permitting. By the way, with videos like these, I can envision MotoMan being America's favorite auto-journalist years down the road. I will be able to say that I started watching his videos before every car enthusiast knew about him! Keep up the great work!

im actually the son of a current owner of the new cts v and i have to say it is one hell of a monster. i adore the fact that so much engineering went into this car, and they are truly appealing to people that dont just want to show off, but to people that want to exploit the technical marvel that it is. out of all the technical things that dave has mentioned about the car, im most impressed with the way they managed airflow. it is amazing how much cooling that is required for this car and its powertrain. im from a suburb outside los angeles, and i pick the CTS v over the rs7 e63 and m5. thanks motoman for the great episode!

I was looking forward to this episode & boy ooh boy, you & Dave went above & beyond on this one! We live in an incredible time, despite all those laws & regulations we got a 640hp & 707hp sedans that do 0-60 in less than 4 seconds, dominate the track (one of em), run with the best of them & cost less than a $ 100k! .... Dave & Ralph done lost their minds lol The amount of engineering, time & effort that went into making sure it can deliver 200mph & mind blowing performance all day everyday is just .... Much respect to Dave & the V team If they can do this with limited budgets, can you imagine the possibilities if they had someone like Doctor Z backing them up or they were allowed to go buck wild .... Ooooofff! Ouch ... jk jk, I agree tough, it seems like CarPlay & Auto are the future of infotainment systems... OEMs won't have to devote more resources to them & focus on other things... But apparently the German 3 are holding their grounds with the recent HERE acquisition & I can't imagine BMW ditching iDrive anytime soon. I like the new Gauges... Dave wasn't kidding when he said they updated the fonts & graphics.... Much better looking than the ones in the regular CTS & the rings are a nice touch too ... Not the best execution but still very very cool I agree regarding the knobs... Well, anything to tone down the piano black surfaces as much as possible ... Luckily, they are listening... First the CT6's interior & now the upgraded CUE ... I'll always pick the CTS V over the M5 ... I know i have my weakness towards BMWs... But unless a 7-Series is involved, I'll always definitely most likely probably pick the Cadillac, even though the 6er Gran Coupe is sexy as hell ... Will I take it to a track? Hmmm with my current skills : That's a Big No, but I'll take as much professional driving lessons (in Nürburg, Laguna Seca ... Anywhere I can) as I can & then ... only then, I'd go for it ... Which leads me to the Carbon Ceramics thing, given I mastered track driving... Probably No ... Unless I moved to Germany ;) As much as I love the new CTS V, I still really hate that grille ... They need to talk to Ralph about grilles. Did you get to reach 200mph? I saw 150 on tape, don't worry we won't tell ;) Glad to see you had fun & enjoyed your time in Road America... :)

What an outstanding video. PERFECT mix of facts, personal excitement ( you cant hide the grins even with the full face on) and tech knowledge. Having had a stable of cars in the last 40 years that were fun, but none on performance equal to this i now have officially tattooed CTS-V on my frontal lobe. My new DD is a perfect 2013 CTS coupe performance ed in tint red that is the most exciting car I have ever owned and makes me grin every time I start it. But after watching several of these videos I realized I've got to acquire one of these with that capital V on the trunk and under the hood. I will stop at nothing until i piss off my neighbors when they hear me pull out of my driveway insanely laughing over the Glorious Roar of that engine. Thank you for the great video

I am actively shopping for the new generation CTS-V. They seem to be phenomenal sedans as seen in this video. Thank you!

what's being over looked is the added 80-100rwhp from a simple upper pulley change, cai, tune, & exhaust mods for under $1500.00. now we're talking best bang for the buck on the planet once again. caddy is the new standard for all things this segment could ever offer. I have a cts-v 2nd gen and with close to 700rwhp it doesn't disappoint.

I'm already a big Cadillac fan, I currently have two newer models in my Garage. I love my ATS Performance Model with the 3.6L engine, but I have been eyeing the latest Z06 for the third bay of my garage. The Z06 Stingray is a fantastic vehicle, but at 61 years old, I'm not sure if I want to go that far out on the edge, meaning I grown accustomed to being coddled in luxury. This new CTS-V has given us the perfect option, this is a car that can follow or lead the Z06 around the track (depending who's driving) and can also pull up out front of a very important function and really make a Hollywood Red Carpet showing. I think the BMW M5 was superior than the previous generation CTS-V, but it's now just a competitor and not actually capable of besting the new king of the mid-size performance luxury cars.

Firstly MotoMan, I really love your videos. Now I am traditionally an M5 man. Never been much of a fan of the E63 or the previous V-Series. I just thought the M5 seemed purer of purpose although the current model is a bit lost in the wilderness to me now. When that was first released I watched a lot of technical videos on it and was not too impressed. Since watching this video and the technical review, along with other reviews and articles, this new CTS-V would be my car hands down. Something about the supercharger whine, the clean yet aggressive look and all of the passion that Dave Leone obviously has for his craft, this machine is for me the class leader. Never thought a day would come that I considered Cadillac as a serious sports car but wow. Just so you know, I am from Barbados. Well done on all fronts. From a certified Honda and BMW lover, this car is just epic.

I always liked the v series Cadillacs. I dreamed of an sts v years ago. I am excited about this new one as well,I think it's an excellent offering for a super sedan. with that being said, living in western pa I'd take the rs7 (big vag fan I am) as the awd would be a must where I live with poor winter road maintenance. if I lived elsewhere, I'd grab the caddy followed closely by the amg.

Oh how I love the CTS-V for 2016! Since I am a fan of American Muscle, of course I'd take it over M5 or C63. Since utilizing "track day" isn't in my league, I couldn't say that I'd take it to the track. I've never been on "the track" (other than dragstrips of yore). Loved the review, MM.

Budget being no option I'd have to go E63 Wagon. Love this thing but I don't think I could live with the que system. Powertrain and chassis seems to be truly state of the art but you still have to live with the tech. Granted I haven't had a chance to use it first hand yet but like you said, its not a very popular set up. Awesome video! We gotta catch up soon!

MotoMan, you are one lucky dog! I would be inclined to pick the Cadillac. For me, there is definitely something to be said for NOT picking the obvious choice, plus I really like the styling on this "V". Other than that, I am more attracted to the supercharger than the turbo choice. I live in the Southeast U.S. and I would love to see it on Road Atlanta. Although, I don't think my first track day experience should be with 640 HP! I love to hear the engineer's input. I wonder how much weight savings a carbon ceramic brake option would be? Otherwise, if he says the steel ones are up to stopping from 200mph, I believe him!

I have been a CTS-V fan from the beginning. I love everything about the car better then the M5!!! especially the way it sounds and looks. However, having sat in a fully optioned Cadillac and a well optioned M5 and M6, the interior just feels soooo special in the BMW. I like the way it all looks and feels. It's much better then the Cadillac inside which is where you spend all your time!!! so I would have to go with the BMW.

Its interesting how much these steal brakes weight compared to its rivals. One of the big advantages of carbon ceramics is reduced weight by as much as 20-25kg compared to regular ones. This impact on unsprung masses has significant on ride comfort and driving dynamics.

No question, I would choose the Cadillac. Better looking, better price and, yes, CUE. It's (now) a very good system. Would be fun to drive it over our German streets, in the Alps (and Autobahn, of course). Greetings from Munich. By the way, MotorMan. Thank you for your films! They are always fantastic. MotoManTV In its current iteration I would take the Cadillac. I am from the US and am usually a Mercedes fan in general, but the current E class is a little long in the tooth. But I think you need to run a fair ocmparison when the W213 E63 Amg comes to market. THat car looks like it will give the M5 and Leone's machine a good run for their money. I also do prefer the AWD setup of the E63 AMG, b ut Cadillac looks like it knows how to buiold a better RWD hypersedan when compared to BMW

lets see... the V3 is to what mid-sized luxury super sedans, what the z06 is to super sports cars.... a performance bargain that the latest renditions now offer with no compromise.... the dynamics and chassis is superior with a world class drive train that can compete with anything.... thats why i took delivery of my 2018 V3, and it was a steal .... came with grey metallic edition, a very rare celebratory spec by cadillac with only 115 ever made

GreaterGoodConcepts The reason you wouldn't refer to their earlier models is because it's not the 1980s any more. I thought that was completely fucking obvious. It's 2015 now. Act like it. And I have a problem with the kind of blatant stupidity you're displaying, which is why you're getting the response you're getting. I had a v8 (manual) m3, then moved to the v10 (smg) m5 and now switched to a 2016 CTS-V. They are all great cars with different characters. The motor and differential make for a really nice driving experience in the CTS-V. I had the choice between lightly used AMG's or M5's or a new CTS-V for the money I was willing to spend. I picked the CTS-V, mainly because of the value, and to drive something different from what I was used to in the past. . I do about 10 to 15 track days on motorcycles in the summer but will likely replace a few bike days with car days next summer. On a 1000cc bike, I can get to 280 km/h on the back straight at Mosport. I am curious what the CTS-V will do and how the lines/braking points will differ. I live in Toronto and use it as my daily driver (except in snow storms, when I take the truck). I was tempted to get a low mileage GTR instead but once I sat in the back, I thought, I can not do that to my kid.

calen pope If I was looking for just the best car, I would take the Audi out of it. Just not competitive with this set on a track. Then looking BMW v Mercedes, I would go with the Mercedes because I find the car a bit more engaging than the BMW in terms of engine and transmission (and hell, I am baised towards that wagon). But between the E AMG and the CTS-V, I would pick the CTS-V because of the pulling power and sharper dynamics.

calen pope FIrstly i'd say you have to make a choice of what kind of car you want. Coupe, Sedan, Wagon, Coupe-ish Sedan ? If i want a coupe i'd love to get the S65 Coupe, for a Sedan...probably the CTS-V, for a Wagon...CLS Shooting Brake AMG or the RS6 Avant, Coupe-Ish Sedan i think the RS7 would be nice although the M6 GranCoupe is really nice too (if it were not for its sucky sounding engine and traction problems on wet roads). For me the CTS does so many things just right that i really would want one on the other hand a few features are missing that i even have in my S5 now (ACC for example). Not an easy choice. I guess if i had to choose i'd get the RS7, has all the features i want including night vision, ACC, CCBs, AWD. Its just awfully expensive here in Switzerland (about 200k $). Not a price i am willing to pay.

Question for you MotoMan! The CTS-V has 200mph top-speed. I'm assuming that's without the carbon fiber package? You mentioned in the video that the package actually does add downforce. Was any information provided on what the the reduced top speed would be with the carbon package?

95mushroom Very good question - which I must admit I did not pose to Dave. That said, I am going to see him this weekend so will ask and try to come back to you with this one. My guess is that it will be very technical so may hold off on this one until he is back on the show doing another Q&A. And NOTE: I say 'another' Q&A because we shot FOUR films while in Wisconsin (we literally did not sleep) and the last one will be a Q&A with Dave answering your questions from our ATS-V film (tps://ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pH7-iZTHyb4.html) as well as some questions we picked up from our social networks. In any event - thanks for the good question.

Manufacturers add Carbon Ceramics just to get a higher score in the *Options Game.*. Porsche clearly understand what's at stake, and their options game is tight. Would you like some carbon brakes with your new Cayenne? Oh, and by the way, you have to get the bigger wheels for clearance, PASM, Sport Crono package, and Sport exhaust.

I would take CTS-V because: 1. I live in Poland - that country near Germany 2. The M5 doesn't look and feel exotic here. There's a lot of BMW 5 series with slow diesel engines or small petrol engines. And M5 F10 really just is not something looking a lot more agressive and exotic than standard F10 with M styling options. Cars like CTS-V, Corvette or Viper are really rare here and we look at them as exotics. 3. It's cheaper, it sounds better, it is probably much cheaper in mantain costs.

out in AZ, We have a few test tracks..the 303, the 202, 101, I-10, oh and fire-bird raceway...where going average speed of 70-80 mph is the norm. Born and raised from northern Illinois.. AZ is perfect long term proving grounds for that super-charged LS under the hood. With the $9k option for ceramic brake option...brakes are suppose to stop not fade, so if the present brake option does that equal or better than ceramic and saves $9k.. is there any more justification required, other than status quo at a Starbucks ? I do think they need to outfit the other Cadillac line-up with an arsenal of power to go and stop as they have with the 2016 CTS-V. And add additional colors for interior...other than beige, grey, or black. A pearl white exterior with Red leather/ alcatera interior with carbon fiber trim is a solid start. Anyone else with me on this??

MotoManTV Oh I'm sure it will sell high, because there were few made...because few people want one. It's like looking for a brown BMW (they do exist). If he loves his car, more power to him. But this mantra of "real drivers want a manual" is not a ubiquitous sentiment at all, especially these days.

@andyb0x
@andyb0x 9 лет назад
McMaXiMaX I work at a Cadillac dearship and we specifically ask why they didn't offer the carbon ceramics. We were given three responses from the engineers: 1. Carbon ceramics offer poor response and braking performance when the brakes are not up to proper temps (driving in stop and go traffic in the cold, etc.) 2. The new CTS-V steel brakes are virtually fade free (not one of the reviews I have seen yet has mentioned any fade from the brakes while on the track). 3. At $9,000 or more to replace a set of carbon ceramic rotors from the dealership, they did not feel that the slight track advantages CC brakes offered were worth the huge price increase over traditional steel brakes that cost $2,000 for rotors.

To answer your questions at the end. I live in MN and while I loved the previous CTS-V and was looking at purchasing one in the past the style of this car is a little off putting and the price is just too high for what I feel is still not quite up to the German counterparts. The V8 is an off the shelf design with a supercharger on it, the transmission is out of the vette, and the design language doesn't feel as unique as it was previously. It just feels like now its trying to be that hip parent that cant quite be cool. Again if it was a lower price and still had the manual (even if not purchased) it would be a much more underdog feel. Now it feels overpriced and boring. Now the ATS-V that is more interesting.

My last 3 brand new Mercedes (all in the past 10 years) went until 90k miles, then I sold it by choice because I wanted a new one. On my last, there was only 1 problem, and that was a suspension issue...and they fixed it ifor free even though it wasn't in the warranty period. On the other hand we've had 10 Cadillac Escalade ESV's in the span of 11 years (2004-2015)...and because we drive a lot, they all had over 50-60k miles. They, even as the top of the range, flagship Cadillac, had issues over 50k, that's why we got a new one every year. And it's not like my Mercedes's were top of the range...they were the ML (and I have a new ML right now with 20k miles, you can check it out on my channel). So, the comment I made was made with first hand experience. Mercedes over 90k are still much prettier than Caddy's over 50k. Point and case.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 9 лет назад
bigb9854 AWD, fine. That's a valid reason if you actually need it for snow. None of the other reasons you gave were valid. The CTS-V is much MUCH more of a beast than the E63. It's not even close any more. The E63 is also not more luxurious, plus the E63 doesn't even have features like PTM, PDR, Magneride, all stuff you can get on the CTS-V, but not the Germans. And I can't even believe you said "reliable". Mercedes has a MISERABLE reliability track record. Cadillac is one of the best in reliability, Cadillac has been in JD Power's top 5 for the last two years running. They're one of the highest reliability brands in the world.
@MohCars_
@MohCars_ 9 лет назад
OK, let's say the CTS-V is more of a beast....still, it is most definitely not more luxurious. E63 does not need all those features to be good. And if you read my previous comment, I have experience with both. I know for a fact that Mercedes is more reliable than Cadillac. American cars will never be as reliable as foreign cars (besides British) down the road.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 9 лет назад
bigb9854 Dismissing those features by saying the Mercedes doesn't need them is disingenuous, and it shows that you're not interested in being objective. I could say most Mercedes have hundreds of features you don't need, but you would say those features are what makes the car more desirable. Right? Same with the CTS-V. And yes, you do want Magneride, it's the best suspension system on the planet, for production cars. There's a reason Ferrari uses it in all their cars. Your "facts" about reliability do not include anything other than subjective and limited personal experience, with a sample size of maybe what, 2 or 3? I'm talking about JD Power that gets its data from hundreds of thousands of samples. I can give you anecdotal evidence about reliability too, but that doesn't mean anything, hence the word "anecdotal". Mercedes is one of the worst offenders, which is why you never buy a Mercedes out of warranty. Cadillac on the other hand, has been consistently in the top 5 for reliability on JD Power year over year, and that's not something Mercedes can claim.
@Sawashi32
@Sawashi32 9 лет назад
Wait...... You've owned ten Cadillac ESV's and had issues with all of them after just 50k miles? Why did you buy ten of them if you knew they were so problematic? Why not stop at two, three at the very most? This story is either pure insanity or I'm missing a major piece of the puzzle. Anyways, I truly do know of someone that just got rid of her Merc ML400 about a month ago because it was plagued with problems since nearly the day she drove it home. She got a fully loaded GMC Sierra pickup truck instead lol.
