2017 Cadillac CTS-V vs. 2016 Lexus GS F - Redline: Comparison

Germany may be the more well known players in the super sport sedan class, but America and Japan each want some German blood. The latest CTS-V now sporting a 640 horsepower supercharged monster and a track ready suspension straight off the showroom floor. Lexus brings its first ever GS F sedan with a screaming 5.0L naturally aspirated V8 and least amount of weight in the segment. Watch our full comparison test and see which one we think is the best choice to bring the fight to Europe.

Have a 2013 GS 350 , it has been builit proof. Nothing breaks, low maintenance and a fantastic quality interior. This is my next Lexus for sure! Atomic silver with the red interior is stunning !

i love them both, but the CTS-V simply out classes with more performance, a more luxurious interior, more features, and a slightly more cohesive design, of course anyone who chooses a GSF wont be disappointed with a stellar N/A V8, best in class reliability, and an over all very unique choice in this segment. love them both.

Lets take this moment to acknowledge that Lexus is the ONLY Japanese luxury auto maker to take on the high performance brands and actually make their own high performance division of cars. Good job Lexus. This is also the first generation GSF. I believe that CTS-V is the third generation model. So the Lexus F brand is a upcoming player that started in 2008, not better then the established stars but damn good for a starter up and its that new player you should not sleep on. That being said I love the fact the Caddy has almost 700hp but I have a feeling your gonna see more CTS-V crashed then the GSF. Because of its more usable power the GSF is the more of a drivers car. You cant open up CTS-V like you can the GSF. Love both of these cars tho. I do like the interior of the Lexus more over the caddi interior. The Lexus does give you a better value when it comes to options. Theres almost nothing optional on Lexus F cars. Lexus will no doubt be dependable and fun at the same time your not giving up dependability to go fast. I like the front end of the CTS-V but beside the front end I think the GSF looks better in every other way. Both cars are awesome give me anyone ! My best thing about the both of them? THEY ARENT GERMAN.
@theredline
@theredline 7 лет назад
Glad to hear you can equally appreciate the Cadillac for what it is, the Lexus gave it a hell of a fight though and we weren't kidding when we said we liked many aspects of the GS F over the CTS-V. You honestly can't go wrong with either car, each of them will speak to a certain driver in their own way. The GS F certainly gets us excited for the next generation model, hopefully Lexus will deliver the power in the form of a boosted V8 engine in the upcoming LC F. Cheers to both of these not being German :)

Redline Reviews Lexus should've called this car GS500 F-Sport and put it against Audi S6, BMW 550i M-Sport, Mercedes E43 AMG, and Cadillac CTS-V Sport. It was a mistake calling it GS-F.
@that6thgen_2ss35

That is a perfectly stated analysis there. I agree 100%. That engine just doesn't add up to the other cars in its class that it is trying to compete against.
@Toyota4Life
@Toyota4Life 7 лет назад
Torian Richardson Your missing the point. Lexus didn't make the GSF to be the most powerful and fastest car in its class. Lexus wanted to make a powerful car thats also a drivers car and they accomplished that mission 100%. They are not trying to be the best they just want to offer their take on what a high performance sedan can be. The GSF engine is still awesome the last of its kind. Its still a special car and people who dont only care about numbers will see that.
@that6thgen_2ss35
@that6thgen_2ss35 7 лет назад
Toyota4Life I don't think I am missing the point at all. You just contradicted yourself and you don't even realize it. You said Lexus wasn't trying to be the fastest or most powerful car in the class or even the best. That is exactly my point, what is its appeal. You call it a "drivers" car but the CTS-V outpaces it in ever single aspect including handling, power, acceleration, and driver engagement. The BMW is a MUCH better drivers car even still and the AMG is faster with a way nicer interior. In what tangible way could you sell this car to someone in the market for a performance luxury car in this class who isn't already set on buying a Lexus? Serious question, I would like to hear your sales pitch based on tangible information not just your opinion.

Both are beautiful cars in their own ways. I own a white on red 2016 Lexus GS 350 F-Sport that I bought used two years ago with 41k miles for $31k after taxes (original MSRP $58k) now with 62k miles & I love it so much that I'll probably keep it forever. It's been super reliable so far as expected & has a fantastic ride & handling balance. I would've really considered the Cadillac if it had the same long term reliability as a Lexus. It's styling still looks amazing here in 2022 & easily one of the best looking sedans ever IMO & even better looking inside & out than the current CT5.

Great video, Sofyan! You did a great job comparing both vehicles! The Cadillac seems a little more difficult to enjoy as a daily driver as oppose to the Lexus, in my opinion, due to the lower and louder nature of the vehicle. The Cadillac CTS-V's exterior styling personally looks more aggressive and bold as oppose to the GS-F. When it comes to the interior's I like the bright and what seems to be more easy to use environment of the Lexus, but the overall more techy and different look of the interior of the Cadillac. I do have to admit though, the Cadillacs interior seems to have to many motorized and technology based parts, which in the long run can end up costing a lot more in repairs. Both cars also sound amazing, but the Cadillac just sounds a ton better at a stand still. While, when you where driving I actually found myself preferring the acoustics of the Lexus' very crisp sounding shifts and if you will more constant and linear sound! All in all, you cannot go wrong with either of these vehicles, but personally I would have to pick the Cadillac for a weekend fun car and the Lexus for more of an everyday car. I can totally tell you love what you do for a living. From one good car reviewer (me) to one great car reviewer (you), keep up the amazing work! -DriveAndBeDriven "The Quest To Record The Best!"

I love both of them but for some reason the Lexus keeps giving me chills because of that V8. Sounds sooo beautiful! The Cadillac does sound good no doubt but that V8 in that Lexus, I really don't know why. I can literally forget about the power (maybe) because of that sound. Not only that but like what he said, it's easier to rev it up than the Cadillac sadly. If the Cadillac was easier to control while you're trying to rev it up then it would be harder for me to choose.

You also have to consider, the GS F competes more with the 550i, e550, S6 and CTS V Sport in terms of performance. Quite a niche product but it's a smart move by Lexus. Save a nice 15k in the process.

I've no issue with Lexus "better" interior, but the priss-pots who buy Lexus ought not think they "own the road". A Dodge would spank them. The Caddy CTS-V? Now you've got my attention. 🤔

I think Lexus made a mistake calling this the GSF...they should've called it the GS500 since figures are more comparable to the BMW 550, MB E43, Audi S6, and Cadillac CTS V-sport. Save the GSF name for when they release a new performance engine to compete with M, AMG, RS, and V.

A GS500 F-Sport badge may have been more appropriate, we agree with you.
@usernamealreadytaken770
@usernamealreadytaken770 7 лет назад
Exactly my thoughts. The GS-F is horribly overpriced when it is much fairer to compare it to the Mercedes E550 and BMW 550i which are in the $60K range. Lexus really should've just called it the GS500 and given an F badge to a more worthy one. Same with RC-F. But I will say is one huge advantage the GS-F does have over the 550i and E550 is the handling and suspension especially since the GS-F does have torque vectoring differential. The 550i and E550 do not get the AMG/M treatment and the GS-F is definitely better than those. It's a tweener. It's too good to compete with the 550i and E550 but too slow to compete with the M5/E63/CTS-V

@d1sturb3d119 4 года назад
@@usernamealreadytaken770 The E550 makes 429hp so under that of the Lex and the BMW seems like good value until you add features. The Lex offers an option that is a gap in the Merc line up while BMW seems to do a good job giving a ton of options. You are right about it being slower than the competition in objective tests that the reviewers do but in the real world it all events out. If you're out anywhere other than a track, pretty much anything in the F line up will put its power down better and actually have useable performance. Having gone up against these cars, even in a track setting, maintaining consistency is not something that can be done with those cars. They make so much power that they shred their tires in no time. Most people will not continue to beat on the cars for consecutive laps. Overall it comes down to the driver. Personally I would just enjoy the experience and daily drive-ability. But that's just me.

lol funny how you say a freaking toyota to the lexus but you don't say that the caddy is a fucking chevy which is far inferior to toyota in every way possible. You are acting like cadillac is a brand of its own like BMW or Mercedes Benz. Well it is not and its certainly not on par with those german brands. Cadillacs share more parts with chevrolet than Lexus shares with Toyota. Just saying ;)

Very informative review. I have owned Cadillac's and Lexus, both manufacturers make a solid automobile. In my opinion the CTS V is more of a drivers purist car. I would like to see your review of the new Porsche Panamera turbo compared to the CTS V. Porsche has made some bold claims on how much better the newer generation Panamera is over the previous Generation which I currently own.

Not a fan of the design direction Lexus is going these days, which is a shame as they're good at retaining value and being dependable. The looks are far too 'loud'. Lexus had a calm and quiet elegance about them that I appreciated a lot. most of their previous models aged quite well for that very reason. But I fear these designs will age badly as is the case with most style trends.
@RandenMontalvo

@MELLOW design taste is highly subjective, and i hear why you enjoyed their design but to me it was boring and the many at Lexus leadership stated that aswell it was becoming uninspired. The whole reason you have a a F brand is because the leadership felt people attributed Lexus to the senior demographic.

And your profile pic is an S4. You really like slow, underpowered yet horribly overpriced cars, don't you?
@HorrisPMcTitties
@HorrisPMcTitties 7 лет назад
Vernon Price The S4 does 0-60 in 4.4 stock with a 333hp V6. That's not slow, bud. You clearly don't know what the S4 is. It's also under $60k. It's built to a higher standard than a Cadillac, better quality materials, better build-quality and it has solid reliability. Audi dominates on interior quality. You just can't beat the Germans. Cadillac is GM garbage. Literally don't sell and they're cheap as hell on the inside and have very poor reliability. Yet you wanna lecture me? Lmao. Learn about cars a little. The GS isn't as quick, but that's not all that matters. The GS is the better car all around in my opinion. Don't like it? Tough shit.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 7 лет назад
Caleb Chapman And like a typical Audi owner, you don't acknowledge HOW it can do 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. it's called AWD. 0-60 is a measurement of TRACTION, not performance. That's why C&D uses a 5-60 rollout, because they know that stupid people don't understand the difference AWD makes in the 0-60 metric, Zero to 60 mph: 4.6 sec Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 5.1 sec huh, guess it's not that fast when it's not allowed to use an AWD launch. Standing ¼-mile: 13.2 sec @ 107 mph Oh yeah. The S4 is SO FAST. Can't get into the 12s even WITH the help of AWD. "It's also under $60k. It's built to a higher standard than a Cadillac, " It's much less reliable than a Cadillac, son. Audi is notorious for being unreliable. "better quality materials, better build-quality and it has solid reliability. " All bullshit. Especially the materials, were you not aware the CTS-V is made with aluminum, magnesium and carbon fiber? Maybe you should pull your head out of Audi's ass for two seconds and educate yourself. "Audi dominates on interior quality." Too bad magazines don't test for that, huh? "You just can't beat the Germans. Cadillac is GM garbage. " You keep telling yourself that as any V series Cadillac blows your doors off and becomes a small spot in the distance. I had a guy in an S4 try to race me the other day, it was hilarious. I passed him like he was standing still. He was SO MAD. "Literally don't sell " Well now all you're doing is proving you don't know what the word "literally" means. You're literally proving that. Also the CTS-V actually sold completely out, and now there is a 4 month waiting list for it. That seems like the opposite of "literally not selling". "Yet you wanna lecture me? " I like to lecture anybody that exhibits your level of stupidity. You know, Audi fanboys who think Audis are faster than every other car on the planet because they don't understand why or how AWD artificially inflates their 0-60 numbers. You guys are all idiots. "The GS isn't as quick, but that's not all that matters." The GS F is MUCH slower, not just a little bit, and it also handles worse, as proven by the way the CTS-V smacks it around like a bitch on the track. But hey, at least it costs the same amount of money while being so much slower. And nobody cares about your opinion, kid. Your opinion is worthless.
@vernonprice5986
@vernonprice5986 7 лет назад
Caleb Chapman "Obviously you care. You took the time to comment, didn't you?" I care about correcting your stupidity, I don't care about your opinion since it's irrelevant due to your vast ignorance. "I never said Audis are faster than anything out there." I didn't say you said that. What are you, illiterate? Read what I said again, then try again. "They are absolutely built better" They are absolutely not built better. Here's an example. d1arsn5g9mfrlq.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/2015%20VDS%20Slide1_0.jpg Audis are absolutely notorious for having major issues, lemon law buybacks, quality issues and reliability issues. "Cadillac on the other hand... They don't sell." Is this your illiteracy rearing its ugly head again? What part of "The CTS-V sold out and there is a 4 moth waiting list for it now" did you not understand? "The CTS and ATS both have very poor sales numbers " See the part about the CTS-V actually selling completely out of stock again. Try to absorb that information. "Keep telling yourself that Cadillac is a world class luxury brand." I never actually said anything even vaguely close to that, but do Cadillac's V series cars absolutely beat the shit out of everything Audi has to offer in the same class? Absolutely, and usually for VASTLY less money. "All that extra displacement and power and they still have V6's with less power keeping up or smoking them. " That's kind of a vague statement. Does Audi make a V6 that comes anywhere near beating any V series Cadillac? Of course they don't. Of course not. The S4 has a 3 liter V6 that makes 333 HP. LOL? Cadillac's 3.6L V6 makes 464 HP and 445 lb-ft. You should spend more time in reality, son. "There are much better performers out there than some rebadged Chevy junk." Like what? Also, which rebadged Chevy do you think the CTS-V is? "It won't hold its value or last, so enjoy that. " Go ahead and look up used CTS-Vs on autotrader. Get back to me with what you find. And we already know Cadillacs are more trustworthy than Audis. "Lol. Measured by traction??" Actually what I said was a measurement of traction. You really are illiterate, aren't you? And yes, that's exactly what the 0-60 metric is. It is 100% dependent on traction, which gives AWD an automatic advantage. Which is why idiots like you cite 0-60 times. "0-60 times absolutely are a measure of performance" Well no they aren't, as the 0-60 metric is completely subject to traction. Not performance. Traction. Which explains why your slow-ass S4 got anywhere near the mid-4 second range 0-60, because as I already proved, its ACTUAL speed is above 5 seconds as proven by the 5-60 rollout test. The fact that you're still confused about this is only proving that your head is up your ass. "Again, if my opinion doesn't matter" Of course it doesn't matter, your opinion is based on complete bullshit. Everything you say is instant throwaway. " Your little rant made zero sense " Just because you have the IQ of a fence post doesn't mean my "little rant" didn't make sense. Your inability to understand it isn't my problem. It's your problem.

But all these performance sedans lose value so used isn't a bad way to go if the car was treated properly. Idk what year and milage combination of a used M5 you'd be buying that give you $20k left over after purchase. But to each their own.

500+ HP is ridiculous on the streets. Unless you like going to the track it's pointless! I don't care about bragging rights! IMO I would pick up the Lexus, I like the interior better, and the overall look and feel of the Lexus is better for me. Lexus is also much nicer when you turn up for a meeting. In the UK, most big US saloons (sedans) have a bad rep.They make guys seem like they are overcompensating for a lack of other things... if you catch my drift.

The part left out is that Lexus is significantly more reliable, therefore less costly in the long run. Plus Cadillacs like this are for pimps and gangsters. Lexus every time. Nice growl, doesn't piss off the neighbors, rides better and more quiet, and IT WILL STILL BE ON THE ROAD IN 10 YRS. I'm looking at the Lexus, but they are hard to find. I want to trade in my Porsche Macan, which is cool but VERY EXPENSIVE to maintain. $ 350. for an oil change and $2,200. for brakes also makes you think twice. Car has had $12K in warranty and $8 K in maintainence and repair and it just passed 30K miles. So you can understand why reliability is king.

Buy the Cadillac for "bragging rights" and to enjoy all that performance when you get on a track. But, how many owners of such luxury cars actually take their cars to the track and how many times of the year do they do so? Buy the Lexus for accessible everyday performance and to listen to the Cadillac owner's "bragging rights" while you're giving him a lift to work...because his car broke down.
