cmon Spinelli, you criticize the styling as if they should do what, round it off to look like your German girls? I like that they have a style of their own. I like the sharp lines.
+/DRIVE "bit overstyled" huh? Being flashy and a bit overdone is one of the reasons people buy Cadillac in the first place. You also said "original gangsta" in reference to the original CTS-V. The only Cadillac's that were "original gangstas" were Fleetwood's and Eldorado's.
It always amazes me when people still live in the past and act like German cars are untouchable. Cadillac has been on BMWs ass since the second generation CTS-V. Wake the fuck up people!
+Chris Carranza It would be nice with some competition. Problem is Cadillac has been saying that for 4 decades without delivering. That engine is from Z06 which has a lot of overheating problems not solved yet. That gearbox, be it GM's finest, well, just listen to it shifting. Engine size 6,2L = very high tax in most countries making this car very expensive. Interior and electronics as the case been so far behind Germans. This are luxury performance sedans and cost a lot. As soon as people sit in a German the Cadillac has lost. It's that simple and been the case so far. Hence why Cadillacs are sold with big rebates. But they get closer with every generation.
+Fast Er Read Car and Driver's "Giant Slayer" October 2015. There is also a cap on this years Lightning Lap. Read this and I think you will be delighted at how GM faired. Haters will hate.
+Chris Carranza : Exactly, they were good cars back in the 80s and 90s but since around 2000 they are no longer dependable like they once were. Mostly sitting in the shop for service, but there nice when the work....
+Chris Carranza Agreed....who would have thought 15 or 20 years ago that a very dis-respected General Motors would be able to build BETTER sport sedans than BMW?
ProvenHelper yeah. I just bought a car and it had 113 miles on it. The dealer was like, "Oh... umm... lots of test drives..." I was like... "Mhm". But, what can I do? They were put on before I looked at the car. Anyway, I'm sure it's fine.
buddenbo That's what some people say. But not all. The fact is, the materials do need to properly seat themselves. There will always be variations in the fit and so the parts need to wear in. Tool markings from cnc work, flashing from castings, improperly selected, slightly mismatched pistons (or any other part), there are tons of potential problems that would benefit from a gentler break in period.
***** Right, did I say otherwise? I probably should have specified the video felt corporatey. Most channels don't feel like blatant advertisements, like this one has as of late.
zomgahhh Actually most channels and a bunch of articles you read will say the exact same thing likely have same video or pictures because at these press events they are provided with written articles by the manufacture stock photos and video to use. These press events a journalist is lucky to get 3-5laps. You read enough articles they all say the same exact thing. This is journalism get use to it. It is always and advertisement. Cadillac wouldn't invite a journalist if they aren't going to give them press.
That was only because he was hitting the rev limit before every gear change there, torque management kicks in there and does weird things, just shift before the rev limit and you're fine.
Man, Cadillac has been stomping and trouncing "ze germans" left , right , front and center. At their very own game. Simply Amazing, this CTS-V pushes the enevelope even further. (i'm german btw.)
Quick note...the M5/6 do *not* use electronic power steering, they're all hydraulic. Hence why they don't do the self-parking or active lane guidance/blindspot assist.
How is the interior a bit much? It is clean and simple and if you look at what Benz is doing which looks like the inner coat of a 1970 pimp. Most have already said this car is best in class and for once I agree with that measure. He seems to begrudgingly want to admit it.
Hmmmm, The C class has better looking and quality interiof and they are not evdn rivals, it has varnished wood, aluminum and premium leather. Cadillac has a plastic control panel and leather wrapped dash, even motor trend skipped that part when they compared it cuz it was a freakin joke. Just like every american car, the CTS V is a 80 000$ engine, mercedes is 100 000$ car from tail to front
+ChiTownRuler023 Some people forget just how good the northstar truly was. Twin cams 4 valves per cylinder, they even made a quad cam northstar, they are amazing engines, one of the most under appreciated.
I hoping what ever mid engine corvette plans get made into the next xlr. I hear rumors of there being a c8 that's mid but that should be left front and caddy can make a mid to really complete with the rest of mids, not that the corvette doesn't already.
***** funny how people like yourself still don't know the difference between rear and mid. I seriously hope that was a joke. Miatas and S2000s are technically mid for example. Just depends on if it sits over the axle or not.
Will Dawson No they are not mid engine cars, they are front engine their engine is just further back. I have heard some ricer fanbois try to call them mid engine and that is just factually incorrect. I don't think you know what you are talking about. An NSX is mid engine an s2000 is front engine.
The Caddy is impressive, but his intro was misleading because in the first 10 seconds of this video, he speaks of a "200 mph Cadillac". The most interesting comparison with foreign cars with large displacement "V" shaped engines is our sustained use of a single, block mounted camshaft versus overhead cams. In the late 1980's, the Corvette ZR-1 had an aluminum 32 valve, double overhead cam V-8. But it was soon discontinued because the horsepower gains were modest relative to the added weight, higher center of gravity and increased complexity. Even now after more than 25 years, this still remains the case.
+Freddie B! This is WHY there isn't a comparison! They know it will take the German cars in it's class. They are giving them time to upgrade the E63 AMG and M5 BMW! So what will happen is they will test a 2016 CTS-V against their 2017/18 models. I have driven both the ATS-V & CTS-V. Both cars are awesome! I wanted the ATS-V at first but I just drove the CTS-V last week and it's what I am going with! I currently own a 09-Pontiac G8. Can you say, Upgrade!
Just watched Randy drive this around Laguna Seca on the other channel (MotorTrend) & he said the brake pedal started to get really long just after 2 laps.
+potaka79 As did I, but he still managed to beat the M4, F Type, and 4c from last years best drivers car comp. And as far as the Cts-V goes when it comes to daily driving, I'm sure no one is going to be ringing 10/10th out of it on the street like randy was. 1.38.52 is a very very fast time on that track, may very well be the fast sedan around that track ever.
Welcome to the club, America. I'm an Australian. We've been making cars for this kind of market segment since the 1960s. So have the Germans & the Poms.
+Kneedragon1962 Yes! We owe many, many thanks to you guys for all the GM rear-drive stuff. Too bad Ford never did the same and brought the Falcon XR8 over. Cheers.
***** Yeah, actually it has. Look up the Mercedes Grosser. Look up the early Jaguars. Then from Australia, look up the Ford Falcon GTHO. From the late '60s into the early '70s, while America was making 2 door muscle cars, the phase 2 & phase 3 GTHOs were the fastest 4 door car made in the world. Then we had the Muscle Car scare, and it wasn't until some time in the mid '90s that we made another car as potent as the phase 3. In 1973 you could buy a stock phase 3 'Ho, for $5,200 AU, which was about double what a cooking model cost, which was good for about 165 ~ 170 mph. For about 10 times that money, you could buy a Masarati or Ferrari which had more or less the same performance. American cars with about the same performance existed, but you could not buy them here. And none of the fast ones had 4 doors.
***** Not sure, I don't live there. The Yanks are a bit famous for making engines. Mostly those have gone in 2 door cars but some have gone in 4 doors. Straight line performance, that's nothing new. Building one that handles is a bit new. Muscle cars or sports sedans, the old Falcons, yes. A bit of both I think... Like the Brock Commodores in the '80s, they were a fast sedan.
+Kneedragon1962 ... continued... The GTHO Falcons had a slightly warmed 351 Cleveland. The trick bit was the cam. But they also had a chin spoiler and a small rear wing. Not real sure about the wing spoiler, but the little chin spoiler really worked. And they had stiffer spring rates, better dampers, and the built-in understeer that nearly all cars of that era had, wasn't there. They sat quite flat and would point where you told them to. The handling wasn't exactly good, but the basic balance was about right. Most cars of that time understeered like a snow plough. Mind you, to use that performance, you did have to know how to drive. They weren't the hardest car to drive but they weren't the easiest either. Little British cars of that time like the Austin 7, had no performance but they had handling. Escorts from the '70s, even stock standard, were great fun to drive. At least until they broke down... They didn't have any power, but you could toss them sideways like a toy.
What the hell is with all this negativity towards Spinelli? I think he's alright, actually I can relate more what he is about to say as an everyday driver, than race car drivers. I know it is fun to see cars drift but sometimes this was a test drive video not hooliganism.
+t3true It'll still turn like a boat and, like other Dodge Hellcat cars, be a boat. Cadillac has access to the GM Alpha platform and Dodge is years behind on chassis development.
+Joe Gioia Unless that next car is a total revolution, the only thing it'll destroy are its own front tires. It won't see which way the CTS-V went on a track. Should be nice in the snow though, once you change the tires.
The first thing you notice when stepping into a new CTSV is the...... lack of a stick shift. I mean come on, that's what made the old CTSV stand apart so much as an actual performance/sports car Cadillac. You were literally in a stick shift corvette with a Cadillac body on top. What is this damned ridculous move away from stick shift transmissions? It's literally what makes driving a fast car fun.
what a nice car man. Easily one of my top choices if I had 100gs to drop on a car, would have to decide between this and the new Corvettes. both are really amazing
I would like to see these performance Cadillacs in German hands and see what they think of the performance compared to the German competitors. That would be fun to find out.
Every time I think I'm done, a new video pops up showcasing in a enticing way the new CTS-V, though if I were to get a V it'd be the ATS. For the money it can't be beat.
+Obababoy Yes it's more than the previous one. Yes it is still price cutting the competition. The M5 still costs more money, the E63 still costs a LOT more money.
+David Fischer The way you have to look at it , GM is getting how much power out of supercharged 6.2L compare to BMW M5 4.4L turbocharged , Mercedes AMG C63 now making how much HP out of 4.0L turbocharged ? if you thing it again with normally aspirated engines , last generation M5 had 500HP out of 5.0 ( year 2003 ) M3 made more than 100 HP per liter on both E46 and E90, ( we are talking about year 2000 ) then you realize where GM / Ford ( Mustang GT 5.0 with 435 HP year 2015 ) are lagging and why once it turns to perfection and engineering everybody goes to German cars and GM is always has to play catch ups.
missing 2 cams?... you know push rod engines only have 1 camshaft right? So in the eyes of people who prefer DOHC engines that LS motor is missing 3 cams
Although BMW and Mercedes have pedigree, I chose to purchase a 2013 CTS-V sedan. She’s triple black diamond tricoat with matching wheels, recaro seats and red brembo calipers. Looks better than any German comparable. Oil change $80, labor on repairs, $150-180/hr. You can purchase perceived status or you can purchase performance. I prefer performance over status. The shallow status pool, well it’s just shallow.
Is there a reason for using a auto rather than a DTC? Im not technical, but the shifts seems so lazy and the delay from when you push the flappys to the change happens is imo so annoying.
Mostly because of weight and development expenses, with a dct the car would be substantially more expensive and one of the appeals of the American cars over the german competitors is price. ( Your english is fine 😊)
+Tareq Amane This ain't a cheap car. They chose an automatic because they were able to engineer it to shift FASTER than a DCT. On top of that, Automatics are more civil and reliable around town, win, win, win. No need for the DCT
+Karun Chendrimada shift faster than a dct !! did you just watch the same video as the rest of us? a lot of people could shift a manual car faster than the delay in this thing.
+Karun Chendrimada Maybe it shifts faster than some DCTs on full throttle downshifts, but upshifting, where it really counts, is almost always slower with a torque converter. After all, why would the manufacturers of the most expensive and highest performing cars unilaterally use DCTs if a lighter, cheaper torque converter automatic truly shifted faster in real-world settings.
This is my choice... it's a family vehicle! Get groceries at Kroger (up North!) in record time... and the car looks great. Carbon fiber pkg that works.. GM /Cadillac finally letting mech engineers -car guys loose. Re the video, I don't think I've seen a driver drool like that... of course, speaking while just driving... was just impressed (over 150 heading into the curve).
ALFA ROMEO GIULIA 4-door saloon, 7.43 Nürburgring What what? American and German? How about Masserati Quatroporte GTS? Looks, sound and style generic-americans and germans will never beat
***** Yeah I like it as well, but realistically this has been a winning formula for the germans for over a decade. The CTSV doesn't surpass the E39 by decades worth of engineering either.
I own a V2 2011 CTS-V. It is awesome, but I am looking forward to a V3. I love the German cars, I own a 2013 Audi S5, but I much prefer the performance from GM. Thanks for the video!
I'm glad that Cadillac has finally built a car that can match the Germans. Now if it only could sell more than just in the US market, and start to be a global hit as BMW, it would be great. Cadillac has said this for over 4 decades but I'm hoping this time it's true. I hope it doesn't have the same overheating problems as Corvette Z06.
Mike, I do like the opening lines as you step in front of the ctsv ready and proud with your driving shoes but, unfortunately you were incorrect because even if a Cadillac were to free fall off a cliff, it would eventually, given enough time, reach terminal velocity which is around 127 mph. So, to correct your statement, the only way to previously have taken a Cadillac 200 mph, one would have had to buy a caddy badge and put it on something else or highly modify the car. Have a great day!
I love this car! The kids will throw up in the back each day you take them to school. Your grandmother's back will need surgery after a ten minute journey on a rough road and it'll gulp fuel like a truck. But no matter! You will have the bragging rights and the option of killing yourself on a back road trying to drive this 2 ton monster like a sports car.
This car is very fast, but the exterior looks a lil bit dated and plain. The a&s design language is getting old. At least they could have used the full led. Would have been much better. I'm sure, the next gen Cadillac will be great in terms of exterior. I love the dash though.
I like it all around the interior is a bit flashy for GM but I think its a nice step forward actually because its a luxury super car and isnt that what a super car is all about flashy looks and brute power?
Has anyone seen a head to head direct track and street comparo between this the M5 and AMG E? I guess no one wants to shame the Germans. This car has been out for two years now.
I was very impressed with my turn at COTA. I have a 2003 M3 and thought the caddy felt similar in the corners. My brain fought that at first. Of course the accel on the CTS-V has left me thinking my M3 is slow. And it is not. Ask any local PO ;-)
justin bouche its the surface area of the radiator. The C7 has a very narrow Rad. Funny how the Cadillac guys fixed the issue yet the vette team didn't.
Thank you,Caddy,Thank you,Drive.I love this car.And yeah,I like the Hellcat too.But it's apples and oranges.Hellcat's raw horsepower. This handles. This car is competitive with BMW.The Hellcat's competitive with Merc.Benz.The CTS-V,Z06 vette, and the Hellcat make's The US an Automotive superpower.Able to compete with the best Germany and Japan has to offer.
Vette_CG93 You must not be aware of the fact there have been 2 Z06s to fail while in the hands of magazines during testing. There have been a few LT4 failures with customers too. Is it wide spread? No, but doesn't mean it isn't happening.
DirtyD i'm aware of that, you are right it is happening... but less then a percent failure rate is acceptable in the end... sucks for the people it fails for, but that's the way it goes
Wow...never thought I would say this about a Caddy much less a GM but great job...car looks tight....hint of meanness with a cool business like stance....even the interior looks decent..can't wait to see one in real life..Great Job GM.
How does this have any thumbs down?!?! Just listen to that sound! Honestly, nothing against Spinelli's commentary, I just wanted to listen to that motor sing.
