2017 BMW 540i vs Genesis G80 Sport Luxury Sedan Comparison

The BMW 5 Series has been considered the standard for executive sport sedans for decades. But when something is held in such high regard, it tends to hold a higher price tag. That can leave buyers who want a high-end experience but don’t have a high-end budget feeling left out, but that’s where Genesis steps in. This luxury brand is new on the scene and is looking to take on the established players in the segment by offering high-end luxury without the high-end price.
The products Genesis offers have fared well against premium automakers like Cadillac and Volvo, but it’s about time to see if the Korean luxury brand can stand toe-to-toe with the industry’s gold standard cars. The Genesis G80 Sport lines up almost directly to the BMW 540i, but is significantly cheaper. That’s already a point in favor of the Genesis, but it needs to provide the same drive and luxury experience as the BMW to win over prospective buyers.

Avid Asap. Ridiculous lie. I drove a Genesis 2010 for 5 years, and parked it next to a 2010 Lexus LS. Around the time I traded it in, it still looked like a new car. And the Lexus paint job had aged badly. And I had virtually ZERO problems with it. Now drive a 2016.

It's not cheaper.. It costs less because it has less... As for reliability, where do you see that Hyundai's reliability is that much better or even better than BMW? Hyundai has come a long way in reliability, but they are less equipped and less refined. Show me where a Hyundai has more reliability when comparing apples to apples.. Not comparing a car that doesn't even have power seats to go wrong to a car with power seats.

crabjoe i agree with about the lake of futures compared to BMW but as i said in reliability the g80 win . BMW required Someone who takes care about his car very much . I see many genesis owners who abuse there cars but these things keep running very well . I'm not going to get a dollar if one of these companies succeed as well as you . So we should say the truth no matter if we like one of these cars.

franctoma initial quality and quality over time are totally different. I worked at Hyundai and they are garbage. The Genesis was nice for what it is but do nothing but sit on the lot because no one wants them. They had to basically give them away. But hey guess that means you got a great deal.

mickey oh BMWs pretty much suck in my humble opinion. Hard driving (I liked the way my Prius drove as opposed to my daughter’s BMW). BMW price is way too much. BMW looks are really not that good frankly. PS: I am German - not Korean! I just think Genesis has begun to take over a couple car segments and is on the rise!

Love my Genesis. The deal came down to service for me. A standard oil change or simply brake job on a BMW is huge. The same service on the Genesis is that of a Ford or Chevy.

Luke Hyundai cars, their engines are known to run for a long time. I drove a 15 year old '96 Elantra from 2003-2011 before selling it, it never had to go to the car shop for engine work other than oil change, or brake pads. This is just one example of many who are familiar with Hyundai vehicles know of their reliability, couple that to the car company creating a luxury division i.e. to move away from "plasticky inferior junk" as you put it, just raises the scale of their reliability and want from consumers.

Because American's are known for being all about "brand names & labels" ---- Ford has Lincoln, Toyota has Lexus, Nissan has Infinity, GM has Cadillac, Honda has Acura, etc. etc. By branding is a Genesis, it will be known as a luxury brand....not just a luxury car in a historically lower end brand.

truth be told, beamer price will go down the drain after 3 years. try keeping up with "german maintanence". german cars are only good till the warranty expires. after that its really a hunk of shit (i've owned '07 530i for 5 years) the reliability of hyundai/kia is unbelievably good. i currently own 2016 kia sorento and 1st gen genesis for almost 4-5 years with no maintanence issue. 0 issues.

Great comparison review, Sami! Both of these vehicles definitely have unqiue attributes to offer in the Mid-size Luxury Sports Sedan segment. I actually just recently reviewed the G80 Sport, and I have to say, "The G80 Sport is one heck of a vehicle!". Yes... It doesn't offer all of the ground breaking technology that the 540i boasts, but then again it is priced a whooping $20k below that BMW price. Furthermore, it has no available packages. Meaning you could get a base G80 Sport, and most likely have more features than a base 540i (while still having a lower price tag). Throw in all of the available options, on the BMW, and you will probably suffer from quite a bit of sticker stock when you see the price sky rocket to almost 80k. I am not saying the G80 Sport is magnificent, though. It is more basic technology-wise, and could still use a more up to date interior layout (despite the mid-cycle refresh). I haven't been able to review the BMW 540i just yet, but I am hoping I can review one sooner than later. From one car reviewer to another, keep up the great work, AutoGuide! 👍🏽

Generally speaking older people are your bread and butter with e class, 5 series ect. All the older people I spend time with typically want a simple layout, a larger vehicle, and something they lay their foot down into if they need to. So hats off to the Genesis.

and plastic pump housings where the hose connectors would snap off, and rear upper strut mounts that would wear out so fast you had to buy them in bulk, and rear trailing arm bushings that would wear out and then clunk and wander giving the back end "crazy steer", and rear subframe bushings that if you didn't replace them within moments of failure they'd tear the floor out of the back end of your car, and a knock sensor that requires the flexibility of Reed Richards to replace, and ignition coils that could short and wipe out the ECM on their way out. Still, even with all that, I really loved my BMW. I can't explain why.

Genesis looks better and less generic. The interiors of both don't impress me. Is the 540i better than a new E-Class? I'm not sure about that. I'd prefer an E43. The Merc definitely has a better interior designer. Genesis is a very solid buy, south of $60k, but a non-Hyundai interior would help. A lot.

I tried it myself. Poked the dash/trim all by myself in an E-class with my finger, done it many times in our G30 5-series. What a cheap piece of shit the E-class is. I'm glad we stuck to BMW, at least they make quality interior and have the attention to detail. Unlike in an E-class, BMW has genuine exhausts. E-class they're fucking fake in the rear bumper unless you pay for a model with a big engine. What a joke.

I had to pick between both cars and I went with the Genesis, I drive it 4-5 hours a day and I sleep well knowing it’s not going to waste in the garage and my Genesis is hooked up nice so for 30-40k I’m very happy

You did not mention the amazing B58 engine on the Bimmer. For about $1000 of engine upgrades, you can beef up that B58 to almost 420WHP. This is probably one of the most reliable Bimmers in the recent years.

G80 looks way better and to add, Bmw is not all that reliable plus the warranty suck. I have seen new bmw's on the side of the road leaking tons of antifreeze. I'm taking the G80.

The G80 makes the 540I looks like it's struggling to keep up with styling. I like both cars but I'm love with 2011-2016 5series designs... These newer ones look boring. Overall the 540i is a better car except warranty and reliability. But I respect the G80 for stepping to the big boys.

I own a 2009 Genesis with the 4.6 liter V8 engine under the hood and I love the car. This was the first year they came out and it was voted the "2009 car of the year" by automotive reviewers. With 375 horses under the hood and a ton of torque, the car is a rocket when I want to pull ahead of traffic. It is smooth as silk and very comfortable. I bought it to be my summer road trip vehicle and it's a pleasure to drive out on the open road. I've taken it on several trips, including New York to North Carolina, and I have no regrets about my choice of car. My car is a brilliant black and the paint job still sparkles after ten years time. I don't use it as a daily driver----my old Nissan Xterra serves that function----but it is not garaged and still looks great. I highly recommend Genesis to anyone considering an alternative to the expensive European luxury models.

There is actually 4 drive modes. Normal-Eco-Sport-Snow. I own the G80 Ultimate with the 3.8L V6 AWD. It is phenomenal car.

Both of these are excellent choices in the midsized luxury segment! But I guess it all boils down to what you're looking for. The G80 definitely gives you the edge in value, while also offering quite a bit of features and luxury! The Bimmer has the brand cache, above all else, tied to it! Not to mention the latest and greatest technology not yet offered on the Genesis.

The 540i weighs 3847 lbs, whereas the G80 weighs 4488 lbs. 641 lbs extra weight is about two Americans always sitting in your car.

RSR Auto there really isn't a reason why that Hyundai should weigh so much...my 97 LS400 which is probably just as big interior wise only weighs 3700 and has side airbags, a leather clad everything and a 4.0L V8....the engineers focused all their time on styling, which is good, but not enough on efficiency and weight savings

To be fair, the last gen Genesis was closer to 3800lb but it also has nice materials inside, tons of soundsproofing material, 3.8l V6 or 5l V8 (with almost 200 more hp) so it's not like the engine is far off from an old LS in terms of size. It also has arguably nicer materials (much more wood and leather on the doors, for example, acoustic foam and MLV under the seats, around the transmission column), more speakers, more electronics, more lights, etc. I don't think light weight was a concern here. In a world where our lightweight supercars are 3500lb and up, these numbers are not crazy. Even small 2 door cars like the Audi A5, mercedes sl, etc. are around 3800lb. Two-seater cars are sometimes under 3500lb but not always...

Kai Baumgartner Probably the biggest difference in price has something to do with that weight. The BMW likely has way more high grade aluminum and other expensive lighter materials while Hyundai uses cheaper heavier ones.

Value of German cars fall off a cliff once the warranty is done because they are so expensive to repair and to kept maintained.

If I want something that won’t leak Pentosin, CHF11S or Synthetic oil in the driveway and require top offs every two weeks I’d pick the Genesis over the BMW as they’re nothing but problems after the warranty is up. They’re great for leasing but a bad long term investment and can cost tens of thousands in repairs throughout the life of the car, that’s if you want to keep it running properly. Korean cars have gotten to be very reliable over the years and they use a lot of Japanese branded electrical components which is good too.

The reviewer got it right. BMW is tops in the class, with its understated elegance on both the interior and exterior. Mercedes thinks glitzy interiors equal elegant, and the Genesis interior doesn't compare to either. People complain about the BMW styling remaining the same, but gradual change is the order of the day for established brands. If a wannabe brand ever becomes established, you won't see them making radical changes. Genesis is nice, but will ultimately fail just like Cadillac is failing, because luxury brand recognition counts for a whole lot, and the Germans have a lock on luxury.

Obviously subjective and lots of room for disagreement. When I bought my '15 BMW 5 series, I drove the E class and the interior was just way over the top in an attempt to dazzle you with stainless. I know this model is newer, but the philosophy remains the same. In my opinion it's just not appealing. Not to say the Bimmer is perfect either. I'm not a fan of piano black shiny surfaces, because they're dust and fingerprint magnets. I really can't go along with your stating the craftsmanship and materials are better in the Merc.. I've not been in either, but the reviews I've seen directly comparing the two, state just the opposite.

Miko, I can't agree with you more. Competition drives innovation. I really like the Genesis and think it's a real bargain. Historically it's tough to compete with the Germans, but Lexus has done a good job of it. With supporters like yourself, maybe Genesis can pull it off too.
