While the Accord can't match the fuel economy of the modern Toyota Prius, it gets closer than you might think. If that doesn't sound impressive, consider that the modern Accord is nearly the same size as a Toyota Avalon and delivers more comfort, luxury, interior room and, more importantly, 60% more horsepower than the Prius. Color me impressed.

Joe, I saw a Certified 2014 Accord Hybrid at a local dealer with about 25K miles. Since you have that model, should I jump on that, or hold out for a 2017 when some used/certified 2017s hit the market?

Alex, thank you for this review. I was looking at a Prius, and came across this review which completely changed my perspective on what owning a hybrid would be like. I actually bought a Certified 2014 Accord Hybrid Touring, based on this review, and two months later I'm still loving it. It's one of the daily drivers for my commute (50 miles round trip), and the fuel saving for me is extraordinary. As you said, it's all about the value: both of the car, and this review. I really appreciate the work that you do, thank you so much.

Great review Alex. You helped me decide to at least test drive a Hah. THAT cinched it. (I'd been looking at the racier looking Accord coupe). The switching between operating modes feels much like a smooth acting automatic x-mission does when changing gears, and I really like going 625 miles on a tank of gas. Measured at the trip odometer / pump I've averaged 51.1 mpg on the hilly winding 55mph hwy 71 here in Arkansas (My daily commute to work is 42 miles each way). I'm sure I could get another round trip, since my lo-fuel light has only come on once in the 3700 miles so far, and range typically shows another 100 miles or so. Yes, I do generally stay within a couple mph of the speed limit, preferring not to be in a big hurry (Ever hit a deer going 70?) - ie, generally 55 - 60. I'm impressed also with how aggressively I can brake without wasting anything in terms of energy. Takes some pretty hard braking from speed to peg out the lower left charge meter. Btw I like leaving the center powerflow display option up. Really satisfies the geek in me.

I greatly enjoy your review. Best that I have seen so far. Factual and good comparisons and data. The only thing I can think of that you might want to consider in the future is maintenance costs and/or comparative maintenance cost. Is ti expensive to maintain? Do you have to go to the dealer? Are parts excpense? Are the tires so "hybred" that you have to buy a specific brand, size, etc? Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work Ross M. Jamison

Alex - love your reviews, you are now more relevant than Consumer Reports. I would love you to do a comprehensive report on all Lane Keeping systems (or at least the most affordable ones like the Honda Sensing). Assuming Tesla leads the way, how does Honda’s compare? - For example I’ve heard that some systems actually steer the vehicle almost perfectly, keeping you in the middle of the lane, with almost no steering effort on your part, while others only bounce you from one side to the other. I’d really like someone (you?) to test the Honda, Malibu, and other leading current offerings. My perfect semi-autonomous system would steer for me (sensing that I have a light feel of the wheel every 10 seconds or so), at any speed, along with radar cruise that would always be on and completely control my speed including all Start/Stop with only a speed target and follow-distance setting (until I touch the brake of course). Who comes closest to that behavior (Not counting Tesla)? Who offers the most for the least cost? (Honda?). Also of interest is how these systems work. I’ve heard some apply opposite rear brake to slightly correct the path (this seems a terrible idea), who’s got the best way to control Lane Keeping?

Great review, as usual, Alex. I also like your upgraded UI style of reviews' on-screen panels - looks very professional, which perfectly fits the professional-level content and delivery. My only suggestion would be to change the pitch black background to a dark grey or such to avoid too high of a contrast between the background area and foreground text. Hope this helps. I'm curious about some characteristics of this model's battery, such as its expected reliability, longevity and potential cost of replacement. I'm also curious about your opinion on whether it is worth considering upgrading from EX-L to the Touring version of the model just to get those LED headlamps (for comfort and, more importantly, safety). Thank you in advance for your comments/answers.

Another excellent review. You're the best on the internet in my opinion. I have a 2017 Camry Hybrid. I've found the biggest impediment to fuel mileage is outside temperature. Hills don't bother it too much. As long as you make the return trip on the same route it tends to even out. My Camry does best when the outdoor temperature allows a minimal use of heating and air conditioning. AC hurts the mileage but extreme cold really kills it. During the recent cold snap I only averaged 32 mpg on a tank full. In mild weather I get around 38 or so overall. I think it's a combination of use of the blower motor and the fact that the engine burns a much richer mixture of fuel when warming up. And it has to cycle on more often to keep the heater core warm. I love the hybrid transmission in the Camry. I think it works better than manual, CVT, torque converter or dual clutch. The new Camry should compare more favorably to the newer hybrids. Can't wait till the next Rav4 hybrid comes out. Keep up the good work.

Didn't realize this vehicle existed. Definitely the likely car for me to get for my next hybrid. Thought the only ones out there were Prius (slow but sips gas), Volt (ok but not a fan of US cars), and really expensive luxury hybrids that aren't as efficient. Accord Hybrid eases my sadness that Volkswagen will never release the popular-in-Europe Golf GTE Hybrid in the states.

We are considering this car and the upcoming optima hybrid. Trunk space will be one deciding factor. From the numbers Accord and Sonata hybrids have very similar trunk space but I noticed the shape can be very different and the seats does not fold down on the Accord. Not sure if you can talk about the shape of the trunk when you get a chance to review the Optima hybrid. We have wider items like golf bags that we want to put in trunk (ideally without seats folded down) so we are wondering which trunk is more accomadating for wider items. We ruled out the Malibu Hybrid because the way Chevy place their batteries make the trunk too narrow.

Alex, now that you've had a chance to review some other hybrid models in the class--especially the 2017 Kia Optima EX Hybrid--how do you feel about the Accord Hybrid now compared to that and other hybrids? I like that it's bigger than the Camry Hybrid and almost as big as the Avalon but gets significantly better mileage. (BTW, tonight I had a chance to sit in a Certified 2014 Accord Touring Hybrid and was very impressed, but I'm starting to think about holding off buying until next spring when more 2017 Honda Certified models pop up on various car websites.)

I'm stuck between this and the prius. I currently own two prius 06 and 07 and love them never thought I would own a prius but I really do love it. It seems the prius has more features I may be wrong the prius also has a HUD. How are the safety features on the accord like the adaptive cruise control lane depature etc? Both of these cars can get over 600 to a tank. I don't like that the prius prime you lose seating in the rear but also has a lot more storage than the accord. Sorry to go for so long I'm really trying to decide between these two for a new car.

I wonder how many mpgs the fit would get with a similar hybrid setup? The accord may have similar fuel consumption to a prius, but not if you have to make multiple trips! Of course, the accord hybrid is the obvious answer to people who want top of the line efficiency and reliability but don't wanna sacrifice the driving experience. The biggest benefit of the accord hybrid that NOBODY mentions is its 15.8 gallon tank, compared to the 11.3 of the toyota prius. assuming sticker combined mpg of 52 and 48, that's a 758 mile range compared to the prius' 587 miles! That doesn't sound like a big deal until you realize you would want to refuel long before you run empty, which is typically around 2 gallons reserve, which brings the effective range of prius down to 483 miles and accord hybrid down to 662 miles. This is a luxury, time saving feature that somehow nobody cares to talk about, and one of the biggest annoyances I have with my prius is that I have to fill up every 400 miles. WIth the accord hybrid I would be able to cut fill ups by 1/3rd - to every 600 miles - with full confidence that I won't run out of gas, and if you have a lead foot then the larger tank becomes even more important: imagine driving like crazy but still getting 500 miles per tank, only in an accord hybrid.

Any trip over 250 miles and I'm going to stop anyway. The only advantage to the longer driving range is if I have to fill up half way to my destination gas prices are often higher on the long stretches of highway between major metropolitan areas. Other than that the tank size means very little to me.

"Less trips to the pump" is often a euphemism for saving gas, but making less trips to the pump is in itself a virtue. Nobody needs a 600 mile tank, but its about convenience.

+yan-Deriction I love in my altima I've been averaging around 700 miles per tank but when I had my old nissan versa I would need to fill up every 360-400 miles a tank

yan-Deriction there is a fit hybrid in japan which utilizes a 1.5 litre I-DCD (intelligent dual clutch drive) engine.basically electric motor is connected to a 7 speed dual clutch and it claims to get 70mpg (31.4km/l) because its japan so the actual mpg in Usa will prob be diff.

I test drove this car and nearly pulled the trigger. For me the big pros (besides the obvious fuel economy) were the impressive power from the hybrid engine, and the trunk space, which you barely mentioned. I'm a golfer and I had given up on the thought of getting a hybrid because even if I could fit clubs in other hybrids (barely), I couldn't fit clubs and my push cart and groceries, but with the Accord you can (thanks in part to the large storage area where the spare tire would normally go). in the end, I chose the 2016 Kia Optima SXL for the many safety and convenience features (brake hold, surround view camera, ventilated seats, and an epic stereo system among others) and because the Accord is surprisingly expensive to lease. Honda's legendary reliability does not translate to great residual value, apparently. even though the Accord Hybrid touring stickers for much less than the SXL, the monthly payment on a lease is much more expensive (especially since the Optima has great factory to dealer incentives right now while the Accord, being new and popular, does not). Your videos were an enormous help to me in making my decision, and I will definitely be donating to your GoPro fund so that you can keep helping consumers make informed decisions. I know time is an issue for your videos, but I would love it if you made mention of the general leasing information (money factor, residuals, lease terms) for the cars you review.

The Prius has much more cargo space than the Accord Hybrid. Cargo space is a key factor for me, and one factor that would keep me away from buying the Accord Hybrid. The Accord doesn't even have fold down rear seats.

+John Donaldson perhaps, but the Prius is terribly ugly.

+John Donaldson valid point, except that the Prius is just soooo darned ugly. :-)

So basically the same tech as found in diesel-electric railway locomotives, except that they add in a clutch between the wheels and the engine so part of the time it can have direct access to engine torque, plus a large battery added in as well. Hey, I wonder if GE is now going to think about adding those same features to their locomotives too ?

The Accord may be reaching up to the lofty levels of Prius MPG but they are cars in different classes. I would only consider the Accord Hybrid to be a Prius killer if the prices were much closer than they are. The Accord starts at a price near the top end of the Prius. I certainly wish the Accord was priced so I could afford it. On the other hand it doesn't have a spare tire so it's off my list anyway. I don't agree with reviews that say the trunk space is less due to the battery. The Prius has a traction battery but over 20 Cu Ft of cargo space. So for my money the only thing interesting about the Accord is the larger interior room and comfort. But it falls short in several other ways (price, cargo space, spare tire). Alex your reviews are top notch. Thank you.

forgot 2 mention the accord drives better and is probably more quiet than the prius while being much faster and family spacious

What does it need a battery up front for? Can't it just use the big battery in the trunk?

Hi Alex, you mentioned this is not your favorite care of 2017 model year. Which car is your favorite? What would you buy personally? Honda Accord Hybrid or something with better handling and ride like Audi A4 or A3? Thanks!
