I'll add, for those that might be looking for smoke from their trucks, the blue smoke is definitely oil and I've seen this repair work many times. All of these trucks do smoke white several seconds after startup, like seen in the video, as a normal condition. We had to chase the white smoke for a customer several times before ford responded to us, saying the trucks are programmed to heat the catalytic converters shortly after starting, in order to remove built up condensation. Many people confuse this as an oil or coolant burning issue.
@FordTechMakuloco
@FordTechMakuloco Год назад
Yup you can see it is more of a steam and not a thicker white smoke from coolant or fuel.

My girlfriend is strongly considering a 2.7 with about 50,000 miles on it. Are y’all saying that this blue smoke thing is not a problem? I ask because she has had absolutely horrible luck with cars in the past two years. She got a little over 24,000 miles out of the 2017 1 L turbo Ford focus we got her a year ago and it just seized from engine knock (after getting the oil light on the dash the day before) the other day (91K miles) straight off the oil change rack. Needless to say after all the money I dumped into the car, I am scarred and skeptical about turbo charged gas engines. If she gets the truck, and this is an issue that needs to be addressed, I want to address it asap. Please let me know what y’all think. Thank you!
@hakz1nunke
@hakz1nunke Год назад
@@colinc1633 the 1.0 ecoboost in the focus was a throw away engine. Sorry to hear that happened, but ford does have a TSB stating if it has low oil pressure codes, just put an engine and turbo in it. The focus' in general are nightmare cars and we won't sell them anymore. The 2.7 isn't a horrible engine, and the smoking on startup isn't a catastrophic failure of any kind. The only failures I've seen were 2 different 2.7 motors leaking oil through the valve guides, which ford also has a TSB out for(17-2077), but that's only for trucks built between April 1st, 2016-January 1st 2017. Turbos aren't much of a concern on newer models, as long as you're changing oil and doing other maintenance regularly, and like many cars you might expect to do phasers at some point, and an oil pan reseal. Either way, just get a decent service contract and they'll usually cover that stuff. I don't think you'll have as many issue as you did with a 1.0 focus.

wow, I can't believe that works! I noticed my 18 is doing the smoke at startup after I let it sit for a few days. I wonder if that redesigned pipe is keeping oil from dripping out of the head and through that tube (and thus the turbo) when the engine is off and oil is slowly draining back? the change eliminating an 0 ring and changing the shape of that inlet makes me think they are doing something to try and solve drain back.... would be nice to know how that oil passage in the head works.

I recently replaced both of my turbos, and as such, both of these oil feed lines on each side. Before I decided to replace the lines, I flushed them with brake cleaner. Upon doing this, I realized that I had a free flow of brake cleaner through the passenger side line. The driver side would not flow any brake cleaner through the first I thought “there is my restrictions, and probably the reason why my driver’s side turbo failed”. But upon closer inspection, there is a ball or check valve underneath the filter on the driver side passenger side line does not have. I can only assume that check valve is what what was updated, and as what, keeps oil from draining down into the turbo housing and being burned. Love your videos 💪

When I was with BMW we had the same thing on our N20 and N26 engines. When parked overnight the engine oil pressure will equalize and leak past the turbine seal. Our new feed line had a check valve in the engine side. I’m sure that one does too internally. Prevents oil pressure equalizing. Those engines were only single turbo though, wonder why Ford only wants the driver side line replaced?

Appears that the second lower O-Ring was letting some oil by-pass and building up high pressure that the blue O-Ring couldn't block then leaking into the turbo. One would think it would be happening all the time, thus burning oil. What was the condition of the oil level consumption over 3k miles?

I would have thought that was total baloney but it makes sense: while the engine is running the oil is pumped under pressure and when the vehicle is off you would want it to drain back into the head. Only thing I worry about is leaks down the road due to elimination of the first o-ring but at least you'll make a video about that now, if it happens. Lol.

Will it harm the turbo not fixing it or should you schedule service if this dkes happen?

What is your opinion on the build and durability of tge 2 7 turbo? Which generation engine is best?

Great video. I'm curious on why the coolant line has to be removed on the 2015-2017's to change the oil feed tube? I can see having to remove the turbo flange bolt/stud is required to access the oil tube mounting bolt.

Do the 2015-17 2.7s use the same oil feed line? My 2016 has a cloud of white/faint blue smoke on the morning start up.

Good afternoon sir good morning good morning I hope you’re doing well. I have a 2002 Ford F150 5.4 with 2 valve. My problem is occasionally my odometer starts flashing erratically is it trying to tell me something and occasionally I get like a misfire and then it goes away, please help if you can Also sometimes the misfire happens on his own without the odometer numbers going crazy. I hope this makes sense. I know everybody’s gonna say the odometer flashing is giving you a code that your truck is missing firing

I just bought a 2017 with 120k miles and it does this. Is it something to be concerned of, as in any damage from leaving it?

Does this apply to the 2015-2017 models? I’ve got the same issue with my 2016 2.7 ecoboost.

I'm having this issue with a 21 5.0. When I purchased the truck from out of state, it arrived with no oil reading on the dipstick. When I drained it, I got about 2 quarts out. It's not making any sounds, just blue smoke on cold starts.
@digger105337
@digger105337 Год назад
Mabey they added a restrictor orifice inside the new tube so it delivers less oil. That way it doesn't overfill the turbo housing, so drain back can happen quicker when you shut it off. Over delivery of oil in the low friction environment could also cause it to consume oil while running, but was undetectable because the engine is up to temp.
@hochhaul
@hochhaul Год назад
That would increase the risk of sludge deposits blocking flow at the orifice.
@digger105337
@digger105337 Год назад
@@hochhaul If the oil is to spec and it's maintained to any extent "sludge" shouldn't be circulating in the pressurized oil galley of any engine. Restrictors or Orifices are part of many lube systems. Piston coolers being an example, never heard of one clogging ????
@markk3652
@markk3652 Год назад
I was thinking they added a check ball that shuts down oil pressure to the turbo when the engine is turned off.

I'm assuming (I know bad Idea) they "fixed" this for the 2022, and 2023 models? Looking to get the 2.7L EcoBoost F150 XLT. Thanks!
