** More about this video **
There are few class b camper vans available anywhere in the world that can seat up to 9 people and still have all the amenities to call them true recreational vehicles - The Airstream Interstate Lounge Ext is among them.
The front lounge features 4 captains chairs with armrests, reclining and swiveling seats and 3-point seat belts. There's windows all around and a pedestal table can be put in place to allow for dining or playing games. An enormous flat screen tv hangs above the cab to allow rear passengers to watch a little TV on long road trips.
In order to make space for that front lounge, the galley and bathroom are both smaller than on the Grand Tour - significantly smaller. The bathroom especially is cramped considering the size and price of this motorhome so buyers better place a premium on touring over bathroom comfort. While smaller, the galley on the Lounge Ext works. There's a small compressor refrigerator under the counter and a pull out drawer microwave. Both take up valuable galley storage. There is a flip up counter extension which helps with counter space. The galley is the same size as on my much shorter 19 foot Ascent but I have more storage because both the microwave and refrigerator are across the aisle.
The rear lounge is open, bright and spacious with a rear sofa and two ottomans which also are seats with lap restraints belts. In total 5 people can sit around the rear lounge with pedestal table. There's a second TV in the rear lounge but it sticks out into the aisle-way quite a bit. The rear bed electrically reclines and can be made into one large king sized bed or two twins. The bed isn't the most comfortable due to the seam between the ottomans and the sofa. You'll likely need a topper for the bed to even it out. There's a ton of storage under and behind the sofa. You won't have problems with storing your clubs back there. With that extra length the bed benefits in length. Taller folks will be able to sleep just fine.
The Interstates come loaded with standard features like electronical MCD shades, all the factory installed safety features from the chassis manufacturer, Mercedes like lane keep assist, blind spot detection, multiple airbags in the cab. Plus there are a ton of options available like the air suspension (which you'll need otherwise the ride in the back is terrible), electric stabilizing jacks and an all-wheel drive option. You also get roadside assistance.
On te down size Airstream only offers a 3 year coach warranty which is really unfortunate considering this van is priced at $170K and is considered a premium brand. Roadtrek offers a 6 year warranty and Pleasure-Way 5 and both their competing vans costs tens of thousands less.
If you love the Airstream brand or really want all those available options then you should consider the Airstream Interstate Lounge Ext. It is perfect as a touring coach or for a family of 3 that wants to glamp in style.

Airstream should have a marketing deal with the "Real Housewive's" show. The perfect van for Miami, Dallas, and any handful of cities that value form over function. They are beautiful and have a few nice features, but the tech is so last year. Thanks for showing us Neil

I own an 2012 Airstream Interstate Lounge with 55K miles on the odometer. The main complaint from viewer comments seems to be the cabinet latches. I've never had anything fall out of them while driving even very rough roads, such as I-40 west of Flagstaff or washboard gravel roads. The airline style cabinets are rock solid. They don't vibrate, come loose, delaminate or break. The bottom edge is contoured so you don't crack your head when leaning forward. Try that on most RV cabinets that use residential style cabinets. Secondly, I've never banged into the rear TV that projects into the isle because you instinctively jog to the right to miss it where the bench seat is on the right. Furthermore, the TV itself has a dual swivel mount that allows you to pivot it at an angle or against the wall out of the way. The refrigerator latch is not a problem. It holds the door tight and the handle has never failed. There are many, many little things you will not notice at the showroom that few other RV's provide that you find out only after months and years of ownership. Such as: 1) motorized recessed side door step extension. 2) Valence lighting overhead that gives it a wonderful cozy feeling at night. 3) Dual electric/propane water heater. 4) Retractable Mascerator hose that makes dumping chores a breeze. 5) TV, 12V, GFI 120V outlets and low pressure propane hookups outside. 6) Hardware, fittings, and materials are all top notch. Best of all, I can say that after 6-years, EVERYTHING still works fine with routine maintenance/repairs.

Airstream Interstate 19' vs. the Chinook Countryside 19'. Similar price, similar Sprinter upgrades. It seems like a great comparison review for the premium buyer in the Sprinter 19 footer market.

You're welcome. For some odd reason they do not include 19' on their website, but have two versions on the downloadable brochure.

One really good thing about the extra seats, you can get inflatable cab beds from Pleasure-way and sleep 2 more people. But they don't look like they recline. Having positive latching doors is a big thing for me. You'd never want to have a Thompson Chain King James Bible come crashing down on you. OUCH! I would prefer a used 2014 -2015 Leisure Travel Van Free Spirit TE over this. You'd get positive latching doors, the bathroom behind the driver and save $90-100k. They gotta fix the the bed situation. You never can put up with an uncomfortable bed. You'd have to carry a bed topper, not good. Great job again Neil with your videos reviews!

Per conversation with Airstream, they do offer an extension on the warranty to 7 years and they are considering wrapping this into the deal in the future. It’d be the best in the industry and is a no-brained move from my perspective. Thanks for the great video Neil. Those non positive latch cabinets do have very tight and heavy duty hinges fortunately.

Excellent review, thanks Neil. This strikes me as a rich man's touring coach for taking friends to ball game tail gate parties or a day at the beach. Nice use of materials but as you pointed out missing on some key details (maybe this is the Thor "cheapness" showing through???).
@boxster1970

I have an older 2013 Interstate. Two correction to your excellent video. 1) Those are positive latches on the microwave drawer and refrigerator. They are made from solid stainless steel and securely lock both the refrigerator and microwave closed. I have never had either open in over five years and 100,000 miles of use. 2) Those covers over the back corner of the wheel wells are just trim pieces Airstream chose as this is a kick space. The actual wheel wells are covered with heavy sound deadening hush mat. The full wheel well can be seen by lifting the side seats.
@boxster1970
@boxster1970 6 лет назад
One more thing. Neil - I agree with you that Airstream should use positive latches on the overhead cabinets. Direct replacements to the cheaper version Airstream uses are available at $20 each. I know because I bought them and installed on all overhead cabinets. Did it after I had the overheads fly open several times. Airstream should not cheap-out on this important positive latch requirement. Even though I own one I still think Interstates are overpriced and they have the worst solar controllers on the market. I upgraded both the solar and batteries to what Airstream should have offered for the prices they charge.

Thanks Neil another great review. I really think Pleasure Way are better value for money. Airstream really need to look at the small things like positive locking and the rear wheel cover. You are also paying more for the Mercedes upgraded base vehicle.

I would think the steel roof and hard floor adds to cabin noise from both the road and rear a/c - am I correct? We're interested in a "travel limo" - this might be too noisy.
@Ultramobility

umm i don't think it adds too much additional noise. you'll need to test drive one and see for yourself but I wouldn't been too concerned.

Hi Neil. I’ve recently become addicted to your reviews. You get right to the point and cover the important features. I definitely don’t get bored watching your reviews, where others make me just hit fast forward as they prattle on. Anyway, I want to let you know that I think you are mistaken about the shoulder belts in the rear seating area. As far as I can tell, there are only lap belts. However, they do have headrests along with the lap belts. You almost had me sold on the Pleasure-Way with the rear shoulder belts, until I realized that there are no head rests. Having just been in a relatively minor accident with a three point seat belt and a head rest, and still ending up with painful whiplash, I have become “woke” regarding the need for headrests. I can’t imagine what my body would have gone tthrough without headrests. So, the Airstream Grand Tour (and Lounge) has only lap belts at the rear, but does have headrests, while the Pleasure-Way has three point seat belts in the rear, but no head rests. This seems inadequate for both models. I have teens I’d like to put in those rear seats to avoid losing all the space to the two additional captain’s chairs, but I can’t justify either design. What do you think? Do you find the lack of headrests on the rear seats troubling in the Pleasure-Way? Which would you choose - three point belts and no headrest, or lap belts without headrests (like the Airstream Grand Tour)? I did some research and the lack of either looks like a dealbreaker to me. As far as I can tell, no model of any Class B offers both. Reality check needed! Thanks again. Your reviews are professional, complete, and enjoyable and I hope you continue this for a long time. Also, I wholly endorse your move into truck campers. I think there is a lot of information to be mined from this segment. I suggest taking a look at the Lance, which is built in California (it looks like you are in the Bay Area). I have a Lance camper trailer, like it, don’t love it, but I think they are very well respected in the truck camper world. Keep up the good work!
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
ahh that's interesting. I noticed on the interstate 19 that the rear bench has no 3-pt seatbelts. I don't know how I could have missed that the others are missing them as well! thank you for pointing that out.

Thanks for the info Neil. This is a beautiful rig but EVEN if this was priced the same as your Pleasureway Ascent, I would still choose the Ascent. Interstate looks very tight and claustrophobic missing the great long large open windows running along the passenger side that works so well on the Ascent. No window in bathroom again adds to the claustrophobic feel. Does that TV really not move?! It’s positioned like that permanently sticking out into the aisle?! Not easy to park either

I was in a class b rally couple months ago and the people who complained the most about quality and failures were the airstream people. not sure the quality is there as in the past

Airstream has the “5 Rivet” program and the dealers who have this status are phenomenal! My local dealer is a 5 Rivet Awardee and they are truly outstanding. In fact, they are what drew me away from Roadtrek, who’s nearby dealer was largely abysmal unfortunately.

Let's HOPE the RV industry starts moving DOWN instead of UP in prices for Class B RV's. Roadtrek and Hymer have gone DOWN in price with their lower cost RAM vehicles..yet the features they offer are STILL "high end". How many people (other than multi-multi-millionaires) are going to spend 170K on a vehicle that has little more than a polished aluminum ceiling or felt on the side walls compared to lower cost vehicles?
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
well you're hitting the nail on the head of course. these surface things are just that surface. everyone has to decide what's best for them and what works. it is good to see prices coming down so that the lifestyle becomes more accessible to everyone.

Airstream is Airstream, the're selling alu, name etc, since many years ago quality and components are the same as many competitors, the only thing that makes the difference: $$$$$$$ is it worth it ? I'm not sure.Tks again Neil, for this review.

Is it common for class B's with 4 captain chairs to offer an optional front bed system? The Coachmen Galleria has a similar configuration to this Airstream and I was wondering if you know anything about that brand. Also, this Airstream doesn't appear to have a vent in the bathroom. Maybe I missed that, but I checked the video twice and didn't see one. Thanks for the great, unbiased videos.

It seems like you could get away without the positive latching if the hinge mechanism is strong enough. It would require higher quality hardware than most RVs tend to have though. It would be instructive if you could talk a little about types and brands of hardware and their differences. I don't think I've seen such commentary anywhere on RU-vid. At least not particularly in depth commentary.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
good idea. the problem with what you recommend is that something will always be heavier than the hinge can handle and then it will fall against the door on a turn and it and everything else will spill out. Only a physically latching system will prevent this.

Airstream is so hit and miss. Little things (actually...not so little) like having the television stick out into the already narrow aisle just makes me SMH. And having that unattractive soap dispenser take up space in a cramped bathroom?? I mean....a family of four wouldn't use that much soap, shampoo and condition in a YEAR. Again....what were they thinking?

@ran6110

Well, you hit another one out of the park! I find it worrisome that Airstream takes so many shortcuts with the latching, TV sticking into the walkway and especially the uncovered wheel wells. And I definitely would have expected a better galley from them instead of just copying the exact same equipment Roadtrek uses! You know in my travels I've met very, very few people that had more than 2 people in their rig. Generally, when they do it's generally a couple of kids (and many times it's medium to larger sized dogs) I've never met a larger (4 or more) group of adults traveling in a van. I tend to be private when I travel and allow very few people in my rig so I am definitely not in the market Airstream is focusing this unit on.

I agree as well. We have been researching class B’s for the last month, and Neil, your videos have been incredible and so helpful. We have narrowed it down to the Plateau TS for 2019 but we are waiting for some answers in regards to whether they will be using the 2019 Sprinter chassis and which interior configuration PW will use. Neil, do you have any info on the release of the 2019’s? There is nothing on the PW website and our dealer isn’t sure either. I would like to see them before we place an order otherwise we will be looking used.

$170 for a van!!! There's a dozen European models that offer more and for less than half the price. For $130k I would buy one of the Unity class B models and get a beautiful interior and intuitive layout. 2 or 3 times the useable space and for $40k less.
