You're the best! I have an '18 HRV that's due for this type of maint. (27K). I'm a south Floridian living in NYC-Yonkers. Thank you. Subscribed.

thanks for the videos, nice and simple maintenance. After watching another one, I noticed how clean the underside is, I see you're in FLA, which explains it. Not like the snow and salt roads here in the northeast that corrode everything. looking forward to more

You were able to do this change without jacking the car up? Nice video - I was wondering if I could do my 2011 CRV rear diff without jacking it up.
@StrongDreamsWaitHere
@StrongDreamsWaitHere 3 года назад
It’s important that the vehicle be flat. I drove my back wheels up on ramps to make more room to work, and fluid started pouring out the fill hole, and it would not take a full 1.32 quarts until I lowered it. I think the best way to keep the vehicle flat and still be able to access the fill hole would be to jack up the left rear, remove the left rear wheel, and then lower the jack so the car is approximately level.

Excellent point! I don’t think I ever really mentioned that in the video. I use the fluid pump and it works really well. Thx for the input!

Love the HRV videos. Do you have one on changing the Transfer Case fluid?
@baseballdipper111
@baseballdipper111 Год назад
Is there a transfer case on these? Wouldn’t the awd differential he just serviced be the ‘transfer case’ of sorts? I’m not sure

Do you like the CVT that Harvey is equipped with? Do you think the CVT is a viable transmission to replace conventional transmissions? Great series so far, excited for more!!
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 4 года назад
Thanks Paul! I personally like the CVT but a lot of ppl don't. I think it's a cool concept but it is a totally different experience. Think four wheeler that is an "automatic" or a moped. Same science behind them. The "rubber band" feel is definitely a thing and if you ever drive one you will know automatically what it means. The only reason I would say they are a viable replacement is because they are cheap to manufacture and they last the warranty period. Lol Companies can claim low maintenance costs. Other than that the newer 10 speed automatics do the job better imo.

Thanks, very nice video. Just to emphasize to be extra careful with the drain and refill plugs, these are aluminum and can be rounded VERY easily if you don't snug the ratchet completely in place. Which will be a royal PITA.

Mohammed Hnoosh #truestory. I caught myself not engaging the ratchet good in the CVT fluid change video. Can’t be too careful.

If I did a diff change on my S2000 would it basically be the same? I always think it’s going to take a long time to do. Lol also I couldn’t tell but it would help to put the parking brake on beforehand.
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 4 года назад
It would be a little different I think but close. It would take about the same amount of time. Next time you drive it home we will do it! XD

I tried removing my fill bolt today from 2013 CRV with my 3/8 ratchet and it started to strip out. In Northeast Ohio so the bolts are rusted. I was able to try a different ratchet and was able to get a good bite on the bolt. However when attempting to loosen it, it was so seized up the ratchet bent and actually snapped off inside the bolt fitting. So now I can't get the broken piece of my ratchet out of the seized bolt! Fortunately I hadn't drained the fluid out, so still driveable. now what ...any suggestions???

Use a fluid pump. Or if you are brave you can drill out the bolt. But don’t screw it up.

Real differential only applies to the AWD right? I mean FWD do not have that right??
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 3 года назад
True. Only AWD has a rear differential.

hi could you tell me how often do you change rear differential fluid, my honda hrv 2019 and has 14000 miles on it, and maintenance minder shows 6 which means i have to replace rear differential fluid, and i am worrying is that something wrong the car has only 14000 miles on it, and i was reading that you have to change rear differential fluid between 30000 miles and 50 000 but not definitely 14000 miles does it seem strange to you?
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 3 года назад
I replace mine every 25k along with the CVT fluid. Yes I do replace the washer with it. I not at a place that I can get to my manual to get its suggestions but I’ll check it as soon as I can and get back to you.

Soooooo funny thing happened. I restored my MacBook to give to my fiancé’s daughter. I temporarily have no way to access the files on my external hard drive. If you go on the HRV forum you can definitely find the answers there.

Hi I would like to ask how many litters of rear differential fluid did you use ?
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 3 года назад
Mine took 1.5qrts so you will need to buy 2L also. Super easy though.
@StrongDreamsWaitHere
@StrongDreamsWaitHere 3 года назад
Honda spec is 1.32 quarts.

Hi, I have a few questions: I have a 3/8 ratchet but no breaker bar (which a different video showed as necessary), will the ratchet be enough to unscrew the plugs? I do not have a torque wrench- is it absolutely necessary or can I get by by just tightening the plug as much as I can? 3rd- I can't seem to find anything in the owner's manual regarding the timeline of how often this fluid should be changed, but in every HRV group and forum I've seen everyone say "first 15k then every 30 after that", do you know if that's accurate? My maintenance minder came on with the code for the fluid so I'm gonna change it either way, I'm just a little wary. Sorry for all the questions but this is my first car so I'm trying to learn as much DIY as I can so I don't break the bank for simple maintenance requirements on cars!
@jstinsley
@jstinsley 3 года назад
Hi there! You should be able to get them off with just a ratchet. Definitely take the fill bolt out first though. That way if you can't get the drain bolt out you still have fluid in it. If you change your own oil, the torque for the oil plug is 30 lb/ft. The torque for both diff bolts are 35 lb/ft so I wouldn't tighten it as much at you can. I'd go for a little more than snug before I stood on it. Lol FYI torque wrenches are cheap at Harbor Freight. I can't find anything in the manual I have that sets an interval. It just references the maintenance minder. I do know that the CRV's have had issues with the fluid in the rear diff. I chose 25k miles because it is when I do my CVT fluid change and I tend to do changes early rather than late. Don't sweat the details! When you drain it, you will be able to tell if you waited too long. Hope this helps!
