Worlds 2018. Such a sweet reenactment of every previous tournament in the last few month where « We didn’t nerf Red Aggro for some reasons so IT GLORIOUSLY WINS THE EVENT ». Such an effective yet sad way to hype up Guilds of Ravnica a bit more. Still, props to Javier Dominguez for going in the finals two Worlds in a row and winning the second one... and to Gerry Thompson for boycotting it

For televised events, a few pauses to focus on the announcers going over the field, strategies, cards and potential draw combos would make this game a bit more approachable by less experienced players and make it a much easier to follow as an e-sport. Magic is so unapproachable to all but those inside. Heck, they could scrap some of the actual live play and cover some of it in an Arena like app to clearly cover what is going on. The more people who can get into this, the more money going into the game and the greater the value of existing cards.

It drives me nuts how the camera severely limits the play space. When I have been in Swiss rounds, it feels like there is tons of room for all players to have a clearly visible, easy to identify board state. Once in a feature match area? Everyone has to condense their play area into a 12"x12" box, and the board state is a cluttered chaotic mess. And some players are absolutely terrible at simply straightening out their zones.

I really dont watch or play standard but that was an unreal match.

If we were to relate that to the 2013 Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championships with one scripted duel to this, it was also in Las Vegas as well.

I hope the next meta will be more balanced..

Standard has always been my favorite format. It has such a rich history as the featured battlefield of the greatest Magic moments; from the World Championship decks that would release after the event, to the old VHS tapes featuring US Nationals or the Worlds tournament. It has certainly fallen out of favor with the design team, as the newest sets just seem to focus so much on Commander and collectors rather than Standard (or even Modern). I am also aware that Modern has become the most popular of the competitive formats, but Standard has always been my favorite, going back to Ice Age/Alliances and the days of "Type 2". Sadly, this World Championships - while played incredibly by both guys - featured one of the worst eras in Standard history. This Rb deck was literally the only competitive option for almost 2 straight years. While some people (foolishly) prefer a Standard that narrow as it becomes more predictable, I prefer what came from the Guilds of Ravnica and Allegiance Standard where there were 11 tier 1 decks that were all very interactive with each other. No solitaire decks, no one deck that was above everyone else, and there wasn't a ton of card overlap. Today's Standard features a lot of decks - Grixis Midrange, Esper Raffine, MonoW among them - but the same 4 cards are required for any build. You are punished if you don't play Reckoner Bankbuster, Sheoldred, Wandering Emperor, Fable of the Mirror Breaker. If you aren't playing some combination of those 4 cards, you simply can't grind through a tournament going against them every round. The Standard featured in this 2018 Worlds event was even more narrow than that: you COULD play UW Control, or Scarab God UB, but you would lose after 4 rounds of playing against Rb. It was too efficient, too consistent, and every card at every level was simply more powerful. That's boring.

Finally most of these cards have been rotated out. Hopefully we see more deck diversity next year. I hate seeing two of the exact same deck go up against each other like this.

Finals should be modern! Standard is too frequently dominated by one deck and you end up with mirrors. In modern this (almost) ever happens and you get interesting games, always interesting side board games! Modern finals are way better!

They praised the Gregorz guy for casting abrade on phoenix and hoping to top an answer for the egg when he clearly had enough mana to cast abrade the next turn anyway. It's a gutsy move but I wouldn't say it's a good one. I disagreed with 2 moves that Dominguez made in that same game. Not holding back Chandra and not attacking with Phoenix. If he had done both he would have won. Even the announcers knew it was an odd decision.

In game 2, Magma Spray on the Phoenix wouldn't actually have worked. There was a second one already in the graveyard.
