When an automaker says it is electrifying its cars, it doesn’t have to mean a fully electric vehicle. It might be something like the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. Simply put, it’s a plug-in hybrid. Does it have the goods to amp up buyers? Tom Voelk checks it out.

My 2017 Volt gets 55 miles of electric range daily...that's even with the AC on or heat on, heated seats, steering wheel in winter.....when the Voltec generator turns on I get 42 MPG at 70+mph. It's an incredible car, GM deserves more credit for it.

Excellent review. Plug-in hybrids are great. Smaller batteries means less time to charge and suit the average daily commute. I agree

Aside from maybe the Lamborghini, this car has the coolest engine start button on the market. I know BMW is working on an all electric Mini sometimes in 2019, I wonder if this is its debut to market, sort of get the word out/get their feet wet.

I agree with your comment about plug-in hybrid bs BEV, if it’s your only car. If it’s a second car, then go full BEV. I believe once we can buy a variety of 180 mile BEVs for $20k, the end of gas engines is nigh. Thanks for your review, Tom.

Tom, you’re my favorite online car review channel. One request though: EPA figures are generally poor reflections of real world MPG. Especially in a car such as this, please share your own MPG findings rather than than EPA’s or even the onboard computer’s.
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
That's difficult for a one man operation. The EPA is pretty good about realistic numbers these days (for the most part) and typically new cars don't get the same fuel economy as those that are broken in. There are times I get cars with only 300 miles on them. Then there's driving style which can vary widely. I tend to watch the computer pretty carefully through the week. It's the best I can do.

@piquetuk

I actually have one of these & during a very hot summer in the UK I'm getting between 18 - 22 miles on a charge. It's not going to work for everyone because of the range but to put it in perspective the last time the MINI app worked my MPG was 706.8, not a misprint. I love mine & it's quicker than MINI claims, some seeing sub 6 seconds to 60. I picked it up mid June and I'm yet to put petrol in it, still on half a tank.
@morganlingsweiler9813
@morganlingsweiler9813 6 лет назад
You may already know this, but gas can go bad. I'd try to burn through that at some point and refuel with fresh gas.
@piquetuk

Like the BMW i8 the MINI has a pressurised tank to eliminate this possibility plus I have actually filled it up since then.

@piquetuk
@piquetuk 3 года назад
@@luciocancellara4995 Yes still got the Mini, it works for me but I don't do many miles normally even less this year. 90% of my driving is within the electric range so the app says 120mpg over the 8k miles I've driven. I actually wish I'd gone full electric tbh, running the Mini on just electric like I do it feels stupid that I'm carrying an engine & fuel I'm not actually using. My next car will be full electric for sure. While not as cool as a Mini, Kia & Hyundai do similar PHEV cars with 30-40 miles electric range if you're determined to carry an engine with you. If you have the ability to charge at home & your driving is within the range of an EV I would miss out the PHEV stage & go straight to full EV & this is coming from a petrolhead, strange times.

@@piquetuk It's for the wife, school run then work , a round trip of 9 or 10 miles per day, How long does a full charge last if she only does the above? Will it still need to charger every night?

The MINI uses the same powertrain as the BMW i8 and is centered around performance. The car really isnt competing with Prius or Volt. For folks that have a short commute this car makes perfect sense as it is still engaging to drive and has a practical hatch space.

Love the plug *ahem* for plug-ins. I was doing the math for my father on buying the Clarity in MA. Between federal and state tax incentives and the money saved on gas, the numbers are almost eye popping.

Let me break this down for you. There are 300+ million Americans in this country. Last year, ~106,000 cars were sold in America that could qualify for tax credits. Assuming all of them cashed in on the $7,500 tax credit, that's about $26 per American in order to better our world and push our market into the future. Considering *all* the other absolute garbage programs that my tax dollars go to, I can deal parting with approximately 7 pennies a day

Let's not forget the first Prius Plug-In supposedly had a 12 mile range. My neighbor has one. She usually gets 10. Still, she says it's 70 miles a week that she doesn't use gas and she likes that.
@Trades46
@Trades46 6 лет назад
Driven Car Reviews well as a hybrid it still saves a lot of fuel, so it does fulfill that goal. However if that is the case, why not get a Prius?
@morganlingsweiler9813
@morganlingsweiler9813 6 лет назад
Sadly, I wonder if new owners are factoring in maintenance on the more complicated battery systems introduced here when the car reaches higher mileage.
@tuanhuyngo
@tuanhuyngo 5 лет назад
I don't really see this car as a competitor to the Prius. It is more of a performance related hybrid as it is the quickest MINI in production. It's like comparing a BMW i8 to a Prius. Plus, this car has a more practical crossover hatch shape and opening.
@chrisfreemesser5707

Doesn't seem like this car was worth the effort if all of the additional weight, complexity, and cost only results in 10-12 miles of electric range.

@SSS-mp8th 6 лет назад
12miles, why bother? Minimum should be 30-40 miles.
@dunphyjp
@dunphyjp 3 года назад
Most people wouldn’t even get the full usage out of it. BMW’s regen is impressive as is, and if you use the PHEVs the way BMW suggests, you’ll get more than the stated EV only range. The point of PHEVs is you use the electric only when in a city, or short drives, and the gas on the highway (where the gas is more efficient than BEV). So what you do is put max E drive for your round town jaunts, battery save on the motorway, and if you’re doing a combo or need the AWD for bad weather or something put it in auto e drive. A nice feature that’s not talked about is when you’re in auto e drive and use the build in nav, the car is smart enough to know when to use gas only, electric only and even combos to get the most efficiency out of a drive.

3.5 hours to charge 12 miles on 240 volt? Thats really bad.
@dunphyjp
@dunphyjp 3 года назад
What isn’t talked about is the amperage limit of the battery pack for charging. Lower amp load means slower charge even with higher voltage. Also keep in mind, they’re only allowing 60% of the battery to be used for range. The remaining 40% is kept on reserve or eboost and AWD capabilities. That perimeter was changed to 25% reserve for 2019-2020 giving the car the 18-22 mile Ev only range with no change in kWh capacity.
@bruintoo
@bruintoo 6 лет назад
It sucks. It's not even eligible for HOV stickers because the gas engine is dirtier than most. Total range including gas and electric is 270 miles! You'll spend more time at a gas station than a normal ICE car. It's much better to get the Audi A3 e-tron.
@swanblake

So a larger mini, a heavier mini, a worse handling mini, a less effective awd system mini, a more expensive mini, a more complicated mini, and a less reliable mini. Nailed it!
@yru435
@yru435 6 лет назад
You forgot ~same mileage as the non-electric version. In the retro spirit of the Mini brand, this takes us back to the advent of modern "hybrid" cars where most of them were "mild hybrids" that made us think: why bother with the hybrid at all, it is more expensive and doesn't seem to have much benefit.

Tom, You need to change your identifying logo on YT. I was watching videos on an iPad, realized I had not seen one of yours recently (so must have missed one on this trip), and looked for your logo under subscriptions. Could not find you. Photo of you bent over an engine with an upraised hood does not work well on mobile devices. Just change it to your yellow D, like on your tee shirts (I'm wearing one as I write this), and your followers will find you much more quickly. BTW, 45 degrees in summer?
@DrivenCarReviews
@DrivenCarReviews 6 лет назад
Thanks for the suggestion Peter. Glad you're wearing the shirt! Promotion is something I'm not skilled at but I was told by smart people to brand my channel with me, not logos. Confusing! Oh, and I shot this in spring.
@BlakelyPete
@BlakelyPete 6 лет назад
The problem with branding your channel with you is that on a mobile device (where most viewers are located) your image is too tiny to discern your presence. It sort of looks like a black dot. Your yellow D is distinctive and easily recognized. As you probably cannot use two thumbnails or icons for your channel, one for mobile and one for desktop or tv (Roku, etc), I'd go with the D. If you can use both, then change the mobile one IMHO. Meanwhile, keep up the good work.

Right Lane Hog No. It is a tax credit, meaning it is deducted from what someone owes on their taxes. If someone gets a 4k tax credit, then they owe that much less when the IRS comes knocking. It also cannot count towards a tax refund, so it just means less money goes to the government.

BMW Mini's to me are all a stupid take on what the original was. They are not really mini nor especially affordable, so nothing like the amazing thing the original was. Instead they are over priced, cartoonist life style accessories just like the New Beetle which is also a stupid car. I say get a BMW instead.
