We drive the first Alfa Romeo Crossover SUV, the 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio TI Sport.
This is once again another vehicle requested by you, the viewers! But to be fair, this is also a vehicle we've been wanting to drive for quite some time now, but does it live up to our expectation? Our full tour and review of this Italian SUV goes in-depth with the interior and exterior features, including all the options selected on this Sport model.
We also take this vehicle on a comprehensive road test, to talk about how it is to live with on a daily basis, and what to expect if you end up buying one. We talk about the fuel economy and what we ultimately like and dislike about this Alfa, and a bit of the enthusiast community around them.
The 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio TI Sport we feature here comes equipped with HID headlights, a full suite of enhanced safety technology such as adaptive cruise control, emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. You also have parking sensors around the vehicle, and a backup camera.
On the inside we find leather seating, heated front seats with a heated driver's steering wheel, an 8" infotainment system, and a harman/kardon audio system. The rear trunk space is quite decent with a power lift gate, and manual folding rear seats.

At 2:20 That forward collision warninig / ACC sensor in the front bumper should actually have a cover! (Probably some journalists took the thing offroad and lost it. And FCA themselfes haven't noticed yet, their press car is missing something...) If someone already mentioned it: Sorry, I didn't read all the comments.

Not a problem! We did get one other comment about it, and it wasn’t until we looked at other review photos that we realized it. It’s unfortunate that it was missing, we feel bad bringing it up.

I imagine you’re the type of person who’s going to flood my inbox with comments throughout your viewing of this episode, rather than waiting till the end or replying to your first comment. Not my fault if the manufacturer provides a damaged car, but rather than getting all upset about it you could point it out like a normal human being. Looking forward to the rest of your comments.

After testing this vehicle, one thing it does is handle, I took it up Hwy 9 out of the Bay Area and it smokes the curves.

Agreed! We were very impressed with the way it handled, much more like a car than a crossover.

You can get a Stelvio with a leather wrapped dash via the Lusso package. Probably best to know about the various trims/options available if you're going to be doing car reviews.

really not good information, you mention 280 hp but fail to mention the low end 306 lbs of torque. I test drove 4 other base suv's, the Alfa was the best driving experience and the most power.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
I’m glad you enjoyed your drive of it. It disappointed us, and it wasn’t just one thing, it was the entire package for the price. It clearly works for some, as we’ve seen one Stelvio on the road since publishing this, so someone out in our area bought one. A lot of Alfa fans seem to be upset about our video, but we don’t sugarcoat our reviews, and constructive criticism is the only way the brand can grow.
@randyXLT
@randyXLT 6 лет назад
I get it. Much of your review was not wrong. But I felt you could have honed in on the one thing I think and many think it does better then any other SUV and that is the "drive".
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
We just got off our week with the 2018 GMC Terrain Denali, and while it didn't have as much power as the Stelvio, we found the ride of the Terrain to be exceptionally smooth, leaving a lasting positive impression that the Alfa didn't. We're hoping to work with one of the Montreal area dealerships to feature a Giulia Quadrifoglio.
@randyXLT
@randyXLT 6 лет назад
yes, but, the Denali is a completely difference vehicle. The Alfa is not a great ride because it is stiffer suspension made more for a track then a bumpy highway. So I can agree with you on that. The Denali is also a much heavier vehicle and just in a different class. The Ford Explorer is also a much smoother ride then the Alfa and is probably a closer comparison. Although it too is much heavier. Take the Denali or the Explorer around the track with the Alfa and compare the drive. Ultimately I do agree with your assessment except the power / torque information you left out and the comparisons to the heavier vehicles. The Denali is not a compact SUV made for a more high speed environment.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
That's one of the reasons we'd like to get behind the wheel of the Giulia. Back at the start of the year we published an episode on the Jeep Grand Cherokee, and absolutely hated it, but then we took another go at a Chrysler product and loved it, and continued to be surprised by their other vehicles. I suspect the same will be true for Alfa's other North American vehicles for us. The Stelvio's chemistry didn't work for us, but we're excited to have our minds changed with other models!

These Stelvios are a dime a dozen. I see them absolutely everywhere here in Southern California. My uncle just leased a new Alfa Romeo Giulia, after his lease with a 2015 Lexus IS350 ended. I actually like the Lexus better, but the Giulia is really awesome too.

Your comment (AT 10:44) that it is not overly fast!! You need to do your research EH... It is the fastest of all the 4 cylinder luxury midsize SUV's. 0-60 sec in 5.4. It also handles better than my 2016 X3 which I traded in for this Stelvio TI Sport. You cannot compare it to a six cylinder SUV. Every reviewer has reported that it handles better than BMW, Mercedes, Volvo and Audi.

On the plus’s you note engine performance , then you diss it for not enough; I’m confused. To get the numbers that the base Stelvio achieves you’d be in a much higher price point with competitors.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 5 лет назад
You're right, compared to something like a 2019 BMW X3 xDrive30i the Stelvio has more power, but BMW then offers the X3 M40i, X3M and X3M Competition, giving buyers plenty of choice for power. Mercedes is similar with the GLC 300, GLC 350e, GLC 43, and GLC 63 S. We were disappointed with this Stelvio, but we've admitted that FCA didn't configure this press car very well. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio is coming on the fleet later this summer and we plan on giving it another go with a fresh perspective.

I've actually seen 3 different ones in the montreal area I know they were different as they were all different colors red blue and white . That's still not many. I Actually like this however for 65k they need to update Nav. make interior more luxurious and have Led lights rather than xenon. Also adding 350 hp engine option as third option between this and full blown quatrofoglio may be a good idea for both stelvio and giulia.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
These are all great ideas, I think Alfa Romeo should seriously consider them if they want this crossover to be successful. We did 'spot' several Stelvios the morning we dropped this off, only to realize we were driving around the dealership along Boulevard des Sources.

Well in America you can see GMC Chevrolet and Chrysler cars, so for ''some'' reason you guys seem to like them. Not seeing Alfas in the US or Canada doesn't mean they are bad cars.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
We didn't say they were bad cars, we just weren't overly impressed with the one that we had considering the competition in this segment is intense with the BMW X3, Mercedes GLC, and Lexus NX.

@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
The proximity of the dealerships certainly helps. We saw a lot of fleet Alfas around the dealer when we went to drop this off, all the salespeople seem to park them around to help with visibility. That's one of the issues we have though, out in our area with the 3 dealers it'll be very difficult to expand outside of the metro Montreal area for Alfa Romeo.
@67claudius
@67claudius 6 лет назад
In the US, Alfa Romeo had a sales growth of 230% on 2017, so it must perhaps be a Canadian peculiarity.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
Our sister Channel PRN_tech grew 7,100% in the past 2 months, but it helps that we went from 1 subscriber to 72. A 230% growth in sales sounds great, but if the 2017 sales figures were already insanely low, it doesn't prove much. Our point with the title of this video, which often seems to sway people to vote via the thumbs down button without actually watching the episode, isn't meant to be an insult towards Alfa Romeo. Out here in Québec we see more new Jaguar F-Paces and even Maserati Levantes on the road than Alfas in general. I don't doubt that in markets like California where the number of Alfa dealerships is extensively larger you'll see more of them, but we produce a show in Québec, so we discuss what we see out here. I apologize that I'm making your comment into the example here, but perhaps by pinning this some viewers will actually read both your comment and our reply and understand where we're coming from with this episode.
@67claudius
@67claudius 6 лет назад
I'm sorry I don't know the Canadian auto market in depth, but I know that the US market is fundamental for Alfa Romeo, Canada, on the contrary, is marginal. Currently Alfa Romeo Stelvio and Gulia sell more in the US than in Italy, already an excellent result, 12,131 cars in the first 6 months when in 2016 in US they sold only 528. If you want to see some Stelvios you will have to go south of the border.

I live in Canada and in my specific city i see alfas everywhere. So this is clearly bias. The Suv alfa is good selling Alfa is doing better than they ever were before.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
So you must be in either Toronto or Vancouver. Count the Alfas, then count the number of BMW, Mercedes, or Audis from 2017-2018 model years on the road. As mentioned in Montreal and surrounding area we’ve seen more new Ferrari Maserati models on the road than Alfas.

Good to know! Still, that only makes 4 dealerships for the whole province, and I believe across the country there are only about a dozen. I certainly can appreciate the difficulty of rolling out a relaunch for a brand, but that's going to be a continued struggle for Alfa Romeo given the extensive network of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and even Jaguar dealerships in comparison.

I like your review because of your straightforward approach. The reason the vehicle feels planted in corners is because the suspension was designed by the Ferrari engineer who designed the F40. Also, Alfa Romeo is a sports brand, not really a luxury brand. Maserati is FCA's luxury brand. This is really a great vehicle and unique. Lastly, the Alfa Romeo Giulia is ranked 3rd in reliability in Europe, check out Whatcar.com. Mercedes C class was 14th. The Stelvio is based on the Giulia ;)

Keeping it specific to the luxury market, we haven't driven enough 2018 models yet. We ended up comparing this Stelvio a lot to our $37,000 Mazda CX-5 off-camera, as we feel the CX-5 is currently the leader for compact crossover SUVs in the consumer segment. Sure it has significantly less power, but we feel you get more for less when compared with this specific trim on the Alfa. As we start to approach the change over for winter fleets, we'll end up getting a lot more crossovers and SUVs, hopefully by this time next year we'll have had the rest of the luxury market to compare with.

The least reliable brand by a long shot in surveys is Tesla yet people keep buying them. Check out whatcar.com, Alfa Giulia is ranked 3rd in its category and the Mercedes C class 14th. Also, Fiat is ranked ahead of VW in terms of reliability according to their surveys. People's perceptions of brands aren't necessarily accurate. Range Rover ranked the lowest for SUV's yet they sell alot. Marketing is a huge factor in terms of influencing purchasing decisions.

First, as an owner of a "17 Giulia Quadrifoglio and a '18 Stelvio Ti Sport, neither vehicle has Lane Keep Assist (LKAS) but rather Lane Departure Warning (LDW). The Stelvio is pretty quick as several base Mustangs, Camaros, and 350zs have discovered this. Also, I drove the CX-5 for 2 months and it is nowhere near as powerful or agile. The CX-5 does have one of the best ADAS visuals for the driver; however, people buy the Alfas for their styling and uniqueness.

maan you are often out of point...aah I do not want to even start..This, is the BEST SUV in its class. FACT. Check the infos about the car before you make a review.

Just because you like it, doesn’t mean it’s a fact that it’s the best. How can an opinion about something be constituted a fact? We had high expectations for this crossover, but it fell flat against something like a BMW X3. We hope Alfa improves the Stelvio through constructive criticism like ours, because the fanboys like you aren’t going to help make the vehicle or brand more appealing if it stays the same.

@@PRNTestDrive BMW? Really? I Saw a lot od reviews, comparsions and X3 nowhere near of best SUVs..just check other reviews..cause I think your opinion IS way to conservative with limited info and knowledge
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
Again, you're saying my OPINION is wrong because it isn't the same as your opinion. Let me put it this way, we picked up the 2018 Cadillac XT5 Platinum on Tuesday expecting it to be a boring crossover, but the interior and power is far superior to the Stelvio, which is essentially what we were disappointed with. Plastic interiors don't have a place for a car like a Stelvio, yet they made the interior feel like a cheap Toyota.

Perpetual Radio Networks i do not know as in USA, but in EU there is a trim level with dashboard covered in leather...if this is the only problem...No Im not sayin that my opinion is right...Im sayin that a huge amount of reviews have different opinion..reviews of channels and people, who means something in automotive journalism..
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
If everyone has the same opinion, why bother having more than one journalist out there? Everyone has different tastes, expectations, and experiences that all lead up to their own opinion about a vehicle. Just because a lot of other people love something, doesn't mean everyone has to automatically. I've mentioned it before, we drove a 2017 FCA product and hated it, but we had the chance to drive several 2018 FCA vehicles and found them to have improved on our faults. The same will likely be true for the Stelvio, if changes are made down the road as a facelift there's a good chance we'll enjoy it more.

You can't have leather on dashboard and doors where sun is constantly shining because you would be complaining in a year or two that the leather is cracked.

It's amazing how many choices there are for the ~$50k to $60k Cdn SUV segment. To those seeking a sports-oriented luxury compact SUV, I would likely recommend the Jaguar F-Pace and Porsche Macan rather than the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. I would even suggest the Lexus NX F-Sport, even though it's smaller (I think) and its front end styling is controversial, to put it politely. Based on style alone, I find the BMW X3 to be the most attractive of the group, and the one I would most want to have in my garage if I were prepared to spend so much money on a vehicle.
@PRNTestDrive
@PRNTestDrive 6 лет назад
The competition is fierce, that's for sure. We see a lot of the Macans out here, so they sell well. We're also starting to see more Jag F-Paces, maybe a dozen or so this year. We were so excited to get this Alfa, but it just felt flat to us. There's nothing special aside from the badge, and it just wasn't enough for us this time.

I’d advise getting some elocution lessons and learn to improve your diction if you want to be taken seriously. Your command of the English language is atrocious. Also, you’re talking at 100 mph.

Alfa, VW, and Subaru we’ve found are the three brands that have incredibly vocal fanboys who can’t listen to anything that isn’t a glowing review. The Stelvio was my least favourite car in 2018, but we’re going to give it another go later this year.

I work in the style department of a big motorcycle company, and they claim they want to be polarizing. In my opinion you only make that claim when you acknowledge your self defeat, you should aim at building the best looking vehicle, everybody should love it, not half of your clientele. Alfa in the 50s till the 70s where simply the best, no other car company would be even close in terms of performances but they where also universally considered as top in the styling department. How is the styling now, look at the Giulia, a generic teutonic blend of nothingness, it suffers of a inferiority complex. The Stelvio doesn´t stand proud as it should, I am trying hard to like the styling, because I am in the market for a SUV, but I think I will have to go for a dynamically inferior vehicle like the Volvo XC 60, the Swedes are now leading the design field, not anymore the italians.

I don't think the CX-5 is better, it just is. The Stelvio is one of the worst vehicles I've ever driven, even the Quadrifoglio a couple months back was just a poor attempt at making a fast vehicle. Alfa Romeo really dropped the ball on this one, I guess that's why FCA has to merge yet again.

I believe this Alfa had 17,000 km on it when we dropped it off, haven’t heard of any issues with it. Last year the Montreal fleet had the Giulia Quadrifoglio, apparently they beat the living shit out of it for 13,000km and it had zero issues when it was retired.
