Just came from the stadium watching this match and can confirm what Roger was saying. Though really when he says heat, yes it was hot, but really it was super super humid. I was sitting watching the match and sweating. I've lived in NYC my whole life and it was definitely one of the most humid days today. As we were watching the match we had no idea how Millman and Roger were playing in those conditions. Pretty classy press conference from Federer either way.

Mike Barnes so its was hotter in day match when Sousa and Djok played
@thisoldman99
@thisoldman99 5 лет назад
Mike Barnes Djokovic played with this humidity in the blistering peak afternoon. Federer for the most part has been handed night session matches. Imagine all the players in the outside courts with no shade in the afternoon ? He made too many errors and choked on his serve - four terrible errors to lose from 40-15 at 5-4 in the second set
@TheBestAMVsOfYEAR
@TheBestAMVsOfYEAR 5 лет назад
Yeah Djokovic handled the heat well. Was definitely hotter in the afternoon. I also think Millman played really well and was more comfortable in the humidity than Sousa (being Millman is from Brisbane). Also the last two matches Federer played were day matches so of his four matches two were in the day and two at night. Djokovic played his last two matches before today in the nighttime so he's also played two matches in the day and two at night.

Although it was a disappointing loss, it can happen to anybody on any given day. So stop spewing your hate, Roger losing this one match doesn't mean that his career is over. He wasn't outplayed, he definitely was the better player on the court game wise, but a few things here and there just didn't go his way and he lost. The only time he got outplayed this year was against Delpo in IW, all his other losses were just him beating himself. Good luck Roger, win or lose I'll still be a true fan.

Jason Lewis sure we know what an unforced error is, it is unforced BY THE OPPONENT. That is, it also includes the errors forced by environmental and body conditions and that is exactly what happened here. I don't know if you have ever experienced the hot and humid conditions described here, but it is miserable. I am impressed that Fed and John both played such intense tennis in that situation and John ultimately pulling it off. That being said, it has nothing to do with Fed's career. A professional player's career can only end in two ways: When their skill degrades to the point that they cannot qualify for professional events or when the player no longer feels the joy in playing (possibly due to losing streak). The results of this game does not affect either as we can see from this interview that Roger is not shaken by this game, and clearly he still has the skills.

That’s why these guys are so great Federer was at his brilliant best at times but something was clearly off particularly the wonderful serve. He won the first set and should have won the second but he would have been fortunate to do so as Millman had numerous chances . Yet Millman still had to play pretty great to beat a slightly off Federer and to me the true sign of greatness is finding a way to win when you’re not at your best , novak , Federer , nadal and Murray have done this numerous times over the years , he just didn’t quite manage it today , when you have the talent Federer does he can make the game look easy and very often does and it’s to brush people aside when you are as good as those four guys at their best. Grand Slams are what 7 matches in under two weeks it’s almost impossible to play your best tennis for seven matches straight , your own form can fluctuate , your opponents can became inspired , and conditions can play a part. people forget in nadal in this dominant run at the French was a set and a break down in damp heavy conditions against Schwartzman who had numerous chances to go up a double break , before nadal and the conditions improved , novak hasn’t looked that great all tournament for me , but he has found a way to get it done and that is how you win multiple grand Slams. Credit to Federer for pushing the guy so hard when struggling , and Millman is example to all the guy just kept going and never gave up It would have been so easy to just fade away he had played well , and was still a set and 5-3 40-15 down but you would never have known that it’s a wonderful attitude to have , novak needs to step it up I feel if he’s to avoid a similar fate. I’m kind of glad they put Federer on at night because if he had played in the day in that heat against this guy 😬

Just briefly he mentioned that the conditions are slower this year. I agree just based on what I've seen in a number of matches and what the statistics suggest. Defensive play has been very effective this year at the US Open. Net rushing can work but must be done very selectively or else you get beaten by passing shots and lobs. Steady baseline play with selective aggression is the way to go this year, even more so for the women.

I knew he had a good chance of winning his 18th, and when he finally did, I was satisfied. Slam number 19 and 20 was icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Actually, EVERY tournament he wins from now until the end of his tennis career is icing on the cake. Anyway, I believe he's still got a decent chance of winning 1 more Slam before he retires. Now whenever Rogers loses All His haters starting to say he is playing only for money and saying he should retire to avoid more humiliation. How can you blame on him..? 37 years old.. playing well... Reaching 6 finals out of 9 tournaments he played this year( winning 3 of them).. being no.2 on ATP rankings. Guys Is that called humiliation ? Please.. please.. Don't judge Roger.. Let him to play as long as he wants to. All we guys instead of judging him let's appreciate This Great man for doing so much to Tennis even in this age.

It’s kinda normal for Federer to not have as great a year as last year. It’s always two year cycles. One year dominant the next not quite as dominant. But most guys would still want to have the results he’s had this year. If next year he plays better somehow, then retirement is definitely still not yet. As for his describing the conditions, it may be his concerns in general for the future of the tournament. Whether it was the way conditions were managed by the tournament or just simply nature is up for debate. But this summer has been one of the most up and down and definitely very humid compared last year, maybe before. Would have to look it up.

How many 37 year olds on the tour? Especially with 1500 matches in their legs?? Roger lives and trains in dubai...wins australian open and cinci...he is used to hot If he says it was hot and humid then it was. People sho uldnt disrrspect a legend with stupid comments Anyways he said there was no air and humidity...roger is 37...of coarse he cannot cope like 25 year olds. If his 1st serve was at least 50 percent in second set...it would have been an easy 2 hour victory...but it was 31 Not to mention that roger never talks about injuries after the loss...and only once retired during a match...not like some other cry baby champions

Got one of the Uniqlo tennis henley (Djokovic one from Aussie open). It was terrible on a hot day as the fabric doesn't seem to breath well compared to any other tennis shirts I got and kept the sweat in as well. I tried working out in it, same problem, terrible fabric for sports. Uniqlo really need to improve their sportsline of clothes. Out of my dozens of exercise shirts and polos, the Uniqlo one is close the worst when it comes to dissipate heat and sweat (except for some winter oriented training shirts). Best are some of the Nike tennis and Lululemon ones.

Joshua Steinke No, that will be silly. But what Federer said reminded me a lot of the time when I was wearing a Uniqlo shirt doing exercise. Don't believe me? Buy one and try.

One could understand Roger's delight, knowing the trepidation of a Country Hell Bent on turning back the clock. He can now leave the United States knowing however much he may've tried would not be enough to shackle the heat.....!

It was the heat. It was the humidity. Conditions were worse earlier in the week, especially during the day. This match was at night. Face it: Millman was the better player.

Millman played in the same condition and prevailed while Federer fell down and lost. Stop making it seem like he didn't get outplayed and constantly making excuses. Fed had his chances to win and he crumbled. Maybe he didn't want to face Novak to avoid the H2H. But you never know

As some of you here commented, it was too humid this year's US open. Even the audience got sweat, so what would the player be ? It was so nice of Mr.Federer to mention about the condition. I can imagine he didn't want to do any claiming when he lost the game 'cause it is thought to be like some excuse. But he said, so he thought it's something the organizer should improve that point necessarily. This is a Tennis competition, not the game for enduring for heat and humidity. We always look forward to the professional players' super play, and the super play always comes from the good condition of the stadium, with perfect management of the air conditioning and temperature. It's no good if there's any handicap by the heat or humidity (e.g. the player born in the humid place will be stronger..etc) We love to watch and get excited about TENNIS !! And I really want Roger to keep on playing more and many people would think so too ^^

What everyone needs to understand is that these guys are human.. bad days, good days.. I'm sure Fed fans couldn't see this coming.. don't make excuses for him.. he just got outplayed on top of the fact the conditions were hard for him...

Remember a week before the tournament Rog was clear bookies favourite despite Rafa and Nole being the form players. It shows how out of touch the media and the "experts" are. He was about 7th favourite based on form in the real world. He hadn't won @Flushing Meadows for a decade. Favourite, it was craziness.

Seriously people, things like GOAT is only what the fans are talking about. For the players themselves, they are playing because they love playing the sport (not for the titles) and of course people want to play as long as possible so they can enjoy the process for as long as possible. If one day Federer is simply weakened and no longer feels the joy because he keeps on losing, then he will retire. But if he still finds lots of joy even in losing, then he will continue to play, it is simple as that.
