2019 BMW K1600GT Review First Ride - Helga had to go for her service recently and Coopers BMW in Tunbridge Wells very kindly gave me a 2019 BMW K1600GT to take for a spin. Never one to turn down the opportunity to try out a new bike, I bit their hand off! Here's my first ride of the 2019 BMW K1600GT captured on my all new GoPro Hero7 motovlogger setup.

Mate, what an entertaining and informative video! Thank you so much! I'm about to pick one tomorrow for a one-day rental and found your video when trying to get to know the bike better. I appreciate it!

Thanks TP1, you’ve sold me on it over the GSA. I was looking for someone who’d commuted through London on it, and you’re the man! Years ago, I had a K1200S, which I loved. One time, it needed its timing chain replaced. It took BMW a month to sort it, and they loaned me a GS1200. I hated it, not because of the dynamics, because they were superb. It was because every Wednesday night, for the whole of November 2007, it would piss down on me, from M1 Jnctn 21, all the way to M1 Jnctn 12. The GS has virtually Zero weather protection as I found out on my weekly trips from Leicester back to Kensington. In fact, on the very last time before I got my K1200S back, I was so wet (on the outside) with my gear so cold, I wanted to give up biking. I ended up doing something I’ve never done on a 100 odd mile trip. I stopped at Toddington Services for a coffee. I was dry inside, but when you put on kit that’s wet on the outside in the winter, it’s horrible. Thanks for the review of this bike, now I’ve just got to get over my spinal surgery and pop over to my BMW dealer. (I can’t wait until November!)

Good man, great to see a realistic ride through a town centre as the size of a bike like this always makes me wonder how effective filtering it would be. You demonstarated that perfectly thanks!

Great review mate. I bought mine in 2011 brand new! It now has just over 134,000 miles and is as good as the day it came out the factory. Word of advice: stay away from BMW servicing as it costs a fortune. Invest in a decent tool set and a GS911 diagnostic tool. The biggest pain in the arse is taking off the tupperware but once you get over this it's easy to work on - invest in a good cordless dril too for the tuperware :-).... I love mine and I use it almost daily. I've travelled all over Europe and as far as Moscow and back on a few occasions. Never missed a beat. The ABS and warning lights you were seeing was probably just a dirty sensor. Had the same thing happen to me coming back from Berlin a few years ago. Pulled in at a services, and a quick wipe of the sensor, sorted. I'll be getting another one soon - and like you said, they are expensive but in my opinion, worth every penny. But it's all about personal preference and riding style. This thing is simply a mile muncher. I did Bristol to Berlin via the Channel Tunnel in 12 hours (with stops!). Secondhand prices have plummeted over the past few years and not unusual to see 2016 models fully kitted out sub 10k mark.
@dalley99

It might be a grand more than the new GSA but by the time you've paid the extra for luggage for the GSA prices are very similar, plus this has a heated seat, electronic screen and stereo built in.

The 2019 has a more relaxed throttle map, so if you think it's fast now, it's a lot perkier and will max out at 170-175 after a remap. Dynamic also makes a huge difference. The K16 has very tall gears so you could stay in 2nd or third for quite a while before being forced to shift. I've stayed in 3rd till red line that's about 120 MPH.

Nice review! No nonsense and straight up. Not acting like a professional reviewer does, just like one of us normal blokes, because you are 😎 How do you have your video setup on your helmet? I am personally waiting for the 2020 Yamaha FJR 1300es to drop, so I can see what changes, if any are made. That will decide if I buy the 2020 or the 2019. The FJR has almost everything the BMW’s have. Hopefully the 2020’s will add some of the new features. Great video again, thanks much from across the pond near Atlanta Georgia. Take care and keep both wheels down my friend.

Good vid. I’ve got the Grand America 1600. Absolute beast, I’ve also had fitted the ShotGun Exust witch gives her a lot of carrictor, she has a amazing growl in the mountains also the pops put a massive smile on me especially thru a tunnel. The power delivery is especially good for having a pillion. And on 14hr ride days she is comfey and stable. And when you get to the twistes she handles like a sports bike, even with a pillion. Yet again good vid.

Made me miss my commutes into London on my RT 1200. Must go back into the smoke to try out my new GS1250. I think I'm with you on the 1600 , it never did it for me on the test ride compared to the RT. PS...What happened to your gloves..did you leave them in that flashy top box?

Gutted you don't like the K, I can't imagine riding anything else now, but I do mostly long distance 2 up riding. I really thought the K16 was peerless and really didn't like the Boxer engine. However the 1250 Boxer is a work of mechanical art and totally changes the character of any bike it's fitted in (only ridden the GS and RT though). Good work my friend, thanks for an entertaining channel, maybe see you out there. Stay safe.

Thanks Dave, You know, I’d actually like to give the K1600 another go but this time maybe take it on a trip and do more varied riding on it. I’ll see what I can arrange with BMW? Totally agree with you on the 1250 Boxer engine, it’s beautiful to ride with isn’t it 👍

Had Pans and RT's but love my K1600GTL, you're right, it's a mile muncher, but god is it fast, you just have to have eyes in the back of your head....... So comfortable though, and it comes alive on the back roads of sunny Yorkshire. Did 3,000m tour through Europe and it never missed a beat, the missus loves her armchair on the back with the armrests and big foot rests. Its so comfy, it's worth getting the Mickey taken out of me by my mates for having an old mans bike like a wing! Everyone I know who has a GS loves them, but never been interested at all in them. Great little video!

Bruce please test ride an RS - although I don’t think the 1250 is coming out until Sep 19. I am a GS rider and think it might be the only bike I would consider swapping to - I have been spoilt by the BMW experience for too long and don’t know if I would risk another manufacturer. Really interested in your thoughts.

The lack of "grab" you were talking about when you are downshifting is due to BMW slipper clutch. I have a 2013 K1600GT. Slipper clutch is a definite plus when having to emergency downshift from high speed without locking up the rear tire or tearing out the transmission guts😂 Edit: your traction control was flashing because you must have manually disengaged the traction control, it goes back on after you turn the bike off, or you go back into the menu and turn it back on.

Great review, I've just bought a mint 62plate k1600gt SE with all the trimmings for a fraction of the price of a brand new one. Needless to say its an astonishing bike. Coming from an FJR the engine feels so smooth, you're bang on about how its just effortless to go licence losing speeds. For me, I cannot stand the looks of the GS, and as silly as it sounds, that's enough for me to choose the K1600, as I think it's gorgeous. I also prefer an electronic adjustable screen. Enjoyed the video as always. Take care.

@Joseph Marton Funny enough, 9 months later, I had a failed coils, coolant leak and had enough. I also hated the drive train lash. So I'm now back on a gen 3 FJR which feels like it's made out of one piece compared to the beemer. Here's a vid: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--i_nplGhJ6c.html

Good looking bike but I'm worried that the smoothness and quiet engine will make me want to nod off especially on long rides. I need a bit of buzzing and engine noise to keep me alert. I'll go with Kawasaki's ZX-14 (ZZR in the U.K) with saddle bags and a set of akrapovic slip ons 😎

I have to agree with your sentiment about UK Bikers not giving the 'Nod'. It used to be the norm to acknowledge each other, sadly becoming a thing of the past. I still give a nod, my other moan is the lack of courtesy from all drivers on the roads. A simple thank you goes a long way. Love the vids Bruce

HI Bruce I tested the 1250 GS the other day and found they've tweaked the hill start software, operation method is exactly the same, but much easier to pull away with it still engaged, there's now no need to give it extra throttle, it will disengage as soon as the bike starts to pull away. I ride a 1200 GSA, so I could feel the difference straight away, also loved the 1250 motor, with all the electronic tweaks and the new motor, I've decided to upgrade earlier than planned, I think most 1200 owners think the same once they've tested the 1250! Ha ha. 👍

I’ve now had 2 K1600 GT’s, only bike for me. I’m sure by now you know the heated grips are in the menu where the suspension setting is. You can press and hold the little diamond on the upper part of the button and save the heated grips as a favourite this a one button press then use the wheel to go up or down. The seat heating is in the same menu. I commute 21 miles to work and it’s perfect. Power, presence and storage for shopping.

Well that was one of the best reviews I've seen for the big BM. I used to be a courier for Addison Lee back in the 80's and that brought back many happy memories of getting to the front. I'm thinking of getting one of these. I have a 28" inside leg and the GS is too high, but probably a 2017 as i can't afford brand new but still want reverse gear. The RS is on my list too but I really want as much weather protection as possible and I think this will do a better job. 2 year old 1600 or brand new RS, dilemma. My current bike is a FZS1000 so I'm used to smooth inline 4's rather than a tractor. Thanks again for a great review, especially in town

Wondering how many people, like myself, bought the GoPro 3 and got burned with the fisheye? I used mine three times and it has sat at the bottom of the junk drawer ever since. Even though I’m sure they’ve improved, I’ll never buy GoPro again. Anyway, good review . . . just got distracted by the GoPro thing.

Cheers Walter, yeah I had the Hero, Hero 2 then Hero 3+ and they all let me down on my RTW trip, I lost so much footage because of them. Swore I’d never use them again and went to Drift. But the sessions and this new Hero 7 are fantastic - except battery life and the need to use the ridiculous audio adaptor!

Great review, thanks! But as the forums point out, from 2017 onward the K bikes are dumbed-down due to Euro 4 and need a Bren Tune to restore the "kick in the pants" acceleration. I purchased a 2016 GT earlier this year specifically because I wanted that edgy throttle. There is nothing else like it and I absolutely LOVE it!

I’ve had my GTL since 2014 an$ I have over 100K kms on it. Don’t call me greedy but I’ve just picked up a nice 2012 BMW R1200GS. TPone, you are correct the GS can maneuver throughout a hairpin easier. The GTL will make the sweepers like you you’re sliding down a cloud. And with some miles on the GTL you can keep up with the GS, you just get a bit of an upper body workout. Big thumbs up from Canada.

I've had the R1200RT for 4 years and thinking about moving up to the 1600GT; love the sound, the extra power and the agility of the 1600 but did see the comment about hand protection. I'm in Canada and use the heated grips and heated seat a lot in the spring and fall. It looks like the R1200 has better wind protection than the 1600 which I find strange. I'm sure I could find an after market solution, but BMW should figure this out.

As an XR rider I sort of understand what you mean. That bike's engine is powerful but sterile up to around 7k rpm. But after that, there's some cheeky uncertainty and after 9k rpm character whips out a glove, slaps you across the face and challenges you to a duel. I haven't tested the 1250 yet but have spent enough time on the 1200 to know what you mean. I wouldn't define it as character though, more a different power delivery. Character is owning something Italian and needing the dealer / recovery service on speed dial.

All of these touring bikes need a higher weight carrying capacity, for two up riding with luggage. 206 kg is nowhere near enough, I’m 6.3 and 115 kg with full kit on , add pillion and luggage for a 3 week trip and your way over weight. So far the only bloke i found and own is a triumph explore 238 kg capacity, but it would be nice to have more choice. Keep up the good videos.

I transitioned from a Harley Dsvidson V-rod Muscle to a BMW K1600GT. What do I miss about the loud, wide tired, low profile sexy V-Rod? Absolutely nothing. The K1600GT has incredible power (way beyond V-ROD), excellent braking, handles like a dream. Is extremely comfortable on short and long trips. As a matter of fact short trips OFTEN become long trips as I am not ready for the riding to end. It is a big bike. There was a bit of a learning curve. I added a bit taller screen (I'm 6'-2" and about 190 lbs). New wider Sergant seat, foam grips, added Clearwater lightsn and a radiator screen. 6 valves and 1600 cc = powerful, fast, smooth.

I'm plannig to swap my 1250GSA with a typical K1600GT. Bit weird right, maybe. but even after 17,000km on the GSA i still find it agricultural and vibey compared to this inline 6. Boxer feels faster but the K felt very fast and first class too especially after mid rev range. Those inline six have to be bought just like Hemi's before they go out of production.
@teapotone
@teapotone 4 года назад
Hi Ali, Yep the in-line 6 is an amazing engine isn’t it. The power is absurd, these K1600GT’s are deceptively fast. You’ll be sat in total comfort then realise you are cruising by absolutely everything on the road! Only issue is the servicing costs of them. Every 16,000 miles they need the valve clearances done and this is about £1,500 due to the labour involved. But that aside, it’s an awesome bike 👍👍
